There's so much to love about awards season style: the new-season designs, daring silhouettes and over-the-top embellishments make for endlessly entertaining red carpet coverage. Yet, more often than not, I walk away from a post-show deep dive without feeling inspired to translate anything into my own wardrobe. I’m rarely tempted by the naked dress trend that has dominated the style set season after season, nor am I inclined toward puffball dresses layered in sequins and tulle. While I can admire these bold choices in others, they certainly never feel like me.

This year's Golden Globes, however, was quite the opposite. Gone were the sheer metallics and novelty details. Instead, the evening’s best-dressed celebrities were largely swathed in enduringly elegant black

A conveyor belt of elegant black dresses, some stars leaned towards gothic silhouettes à la Miley Cyrus in her sparkle-adorned Saint Laurent gown or Jenna Ortega's Dilara Findikoglu's ensemble. Whilst others evoked classic Hollywood glamour through draping and texture.

What really struck me was how ranging and personality-packed the looks remained, despite their pared-back hue. And as someone who loves minimalist dressing and investing in pieces I know I’ll wear for years, this felt like a little red carpet gift to my inspiration board.

Let’s be real: experimenting with colour is fun, but if you want a move that always looks chic, black wins every time. Transcends trends—what looks chic today will still feel relevant in ten years—there's a reason LBDs remain such a hero buy.

The 83rd annual Golden Globes are kicking off this evening. The show is being presented tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, and Nikki Glaser will host an audience of A-listers who are set to attend. Among them are nominees Timothée Chalamet, Jacob Elordi, Hailee Steinfeld, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, and Ayo Edebiri. Award season is officially in full swing after the Critics Choice Awards kicked things off last weekend, and tonight, Hollywood is gathering again for one of the most-anticipated red carpets of the whole year—the Golden Globes. Held at the Beverly Hilton and hosted by Nikki Glaser, the 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards will honor the best and brightest in the film and television worlds. As I watched celebrities step onto the Oscars 2025 red carpet on Sunday night, one thing stood out: the near-absence of the sheer, barely-there dresses that have long dominated Hollywood’s biggest night.

For years, the Oscars has served as a stage for boundary-pushing, skin-baring fashion, with celebrities embracing diaphanous gowns that left little to the imagination. But this year, something shifted. Instead of sheer panels and transparent fabrics, the red carpets (both for the main event and the official Vanity Fair afterparty) were filled with a new kind of risqué dressing—one that leaned into structure and sensuality. Enter the "underwear dress" trend.

The nearly-naked trend isn’t gone; it has simply evolved. Where sheer dresses once ruled, the focus has now shifted to lingerie-inspired details—think corsetry, exposed bras and bodices that borrow from the world of boudoir. This shift marks a departure from overt exposure towards a more sophisticated take on sensuality.

Case in point: Monica Barbaro’s breathtaking Dior gown. Opting for a pink-and-silver dress with a high empire waistline, the A Complete Unknown star showcased a voluminous silhouette with thick box-pleat detailing and pocket cut-outs. Whilst the lower half of the dress provided full coverage, the upper portion featured a bra-inspired cut. The effect? A look that felt both daring and undeniably red-carpet worthy.

Meanwhile, Lupita Nyong’o interpreted the trend with refinement and poise. Her Chanel gown featured a chainmail bodice that cinched at the waist, whilst a pearl-embellished bust peeked through, creating a balance between opulence and playfulness that nodded to the underwear dress trend in a subtle and wearable way.

Spanning generations, this emerging trend was also picked up by young actor Josephine Reitman, who opted for a black gown featuring a sheer corset bodice—a contemporary take on the structured silhouettes of the past. The sheer detailing was present but controlled, reinforcing the idea that fashion is moving away from total transparency in favour of strategic reveals.

Whilst corset detailing and exposed bras have long played a role in red-carpet fashion, their presence hasn’t felt this dominant in years. Rather than relying on sheer fabrics alone, this trend adds a sense of intrigue through clever design choices, making it both more wearable and infinitely more interesting.

When you think of spring colours, your mind probably jumps to soft yellows, breezy blues, and blush pinks—the usual cheery, optimistic suspects.

The perfect transitional tone, this deep-red hue feels dark enough to resonate during the final weeks of winter, but fresh enough to be exciting for spring. One of the best things about the awards season is that there's always sure to be something that takes you by surprise—e.g., one project could secure every single award or drama that ensues backstage (or sometimes onstage). But for Who What Wear editors, what always keeps us on our toes comes back to the moment when celebrities step onto the red carpet. We never know what people will wear, what trends will emerge, or what red carpet-looks will go viral. Sadly, though, in recent years, we've been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to awards show style that, well, surprises. 

Don't get us wrong, we will always love a pretty red carpet look, but there's something to be said about those willing to take risks, especially when you're dressing up for an event as formal as the Golden Globes. It seems that so many celebrities are worried about whether they'll land on the "best dressed" list that they forget to enjoy the getting dressed-up part. However, that wasn't the case with one star this year: Kylie Jenner. While one might argue she wasn't necessarily "fully dressed" (wait until you see her ultra-sheer lace gown), nonetheless, her presence was a welcome shift from the sea of cliché gowns. 

Many did not know Jenner would be in the audience at the Golden Globes since she did not walk the red carpet. However, she was there during the ceremony to support her beau, Timothée Chalamet, which quickly captured the attention of the internet. Although most of the buzz did surround the on-screen kiss they shared, we were more enthralled with their looks for the evening. Frankly, you won't blame us once you see them for yourselves! Before we get to Miss. Jenner's look for the evening, we must at least acknowledge the man of the evening: Chalamet. Garnering his third Golden Globe nomination, the actor was up for the category "Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture" for the film Wonka. Chalamet chose to celebrate the occasion by wearing head-to-toe Celine Homme by Hedi Slimane. He might not have won the globe this evening, but this look was a winner in our books. Plus, he got to snuggle up with Jenner for the evening, which who wouldn't want to after seeing her look? 

Jenner might have skipped the Golden Globes red carpet, but make no mistake, she still served a look. Donning a vintage piece by Hanae Mori, the sheer lace floor-length gown featured long sleeves and a ruffled low-back. Jenner kept the rest of the look minimal with neutral-hued nails, a nude lip, and very little jewellery, allowing the dress to be the focal point of the evening—boy was it just that. 

Despite Jenner's attendance being a surprise to the world, it further cemented the couple's status. They successfully honoured their own style through each of their Golden Globes looks while complimenting each other sublimely. As with most celebrity couples, there comes a point where we think we've seen it all, but these two continue to surprise and delight us.

It's official...we're in the midst of award season! Love it or hate it, one can't deny that awards ceremonies are a central part of the culture. After all, what other events in life allow us to celebrate fashion, films, and fabulous people all in one place? As the first of the major award shows of the season, tonight's Golden Globes are nothing if not something to celebrate the arrival of. It's a good thing that Hollywood's A-list actors, directors, songwriters, and more are so skilled at dressing for celebratory occasions—them and their talented stylists, of course. As comfortable as they are in the director's chair, in front of the camera, and, in nominee Taylor Swift's case, onstage in front of hundreds of thousands of fans, they're just as natural and at ease on the red carpet, draped in straight-off-the-runway Chanel and custom Valentino.

We know the true purpose of award season is to celebrate the best in film and TV, but as beauty editors, we can't help but think it serves another purpose—that is, providing enough hair and makeup inspiration to last us an entire year. While we've already witnessed some stunning looks from the Emmys and the American Music Awards, we consider the Golden Globes to be the real kickoff to award season. After all, it's the first show of the New Year and, in a sense, the one that dictates the hair and makeup trends for all others that follow. 

This year's Golden Globes are a sight to behold since some of the buzziest movies and TV shows are nominated—think The White Lotus, The Crown, Wednesday, Babylon, Elvis, and Top Gun: Maverick… I could go on. That means the equally buzzy (and stylish) celebs that star in them are walking the red carpet. So without further ado, keep scrolling to see the 18 most jaw-dropping beauty looks from the 2023 Golden Globes. 

Jenna Ortega debuted a new auburn hair colour, a cool shag haircut, and (if you look closely) double-winged liner. It's like she used the Golden Globes red carpet to give us a master class in trendy Gen Z beauty, and we're taking notes.

We couldn't stop staring at Daisy Edgar-Jones's hair, which was pulled up into a bun at the nape of her neck with lots of volume at the crown and soft, feathery bangs at the front. It's basically the 2023 version of a classic '60s bouffant. 

Anya Taylor-Joy sported the same waist-grazing platinum-blonde hair that she debuted on the Golden Globes red carpet last year. Only this time, it was styled slick-straight and pinned back on one side. It's perfection.

Monica Barbaro of Top Gun: Maverick chose a simple and classic look for the Golden Globes red carpet. She paired an elegant half-up hairstyle with crimson lipstick. 

Kaley Cuoco debuted her baby bump on the red carpet along with feathery, French-girl bangs and radiant pink blush. The combination is a winning one. 

Yet another '60s reference (are we sensing a theme here?), Elizabeth Debicki's heavy black eyeliner, middle part, and effortless hair texture were the perfect combination.

Quinta Brunson's slicked-back ponytail and pink gradient smoky eye are so on point. 

Jenny Slate's perfect curl pattern is complemented by a rosy lip color. 

If the Golden Globes are any indication, 2023 is the year of low-key hairstyles paired with glowing makeup. Michelle Williams's matching pink cheek and lip colour is a prime example. 

There are two things we love about Selena Gomez's look. The first is her high pony, which was styled in soft, bending waves. The second was her eye makeup, which was ever-so-slightly smoky. 

Margot Robbie paired her Barbie-esque pink gown with a dark red lip colour and matching blush. It seems like monochromatic makeup is yet another trend at the Golden Globes. 

Here's another simple yet elegant look. Ana de Armas paired thick, winged liner with a terra-cotta red lip. It's a look that will never go out of style. 

There's only one word for Letitia Wright's red carpet look, and that's glowing. 

Lily James opted for classic Old Hollywood glamour with subtle makeup and a side-parted lob.

Speaking of Old Hollywood glamour, leave it to Jennifer Coolidge to arrive with voluminous, tousled barrel curls. We think her character in The White Lotus would approve. 

Jessica Chastain looked like an actual Golden Globe award. She looked bronze and sculpted thanks to what looked like expertly blended blush and bronzer. 

When she's not playing Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, Milly Alcock is giving us some serious Gen Z–approved beauty inspiration. We love the way she paired metallic eye shadow with slick-shine hair. 

Li Jun Li, who stars in Babylon, walked the Golden Globes red carpet with a dewy complexion and full, fluttery lashes.
