There's nothing quite like the first Monday in May, when the most prominent names in fashion, sports, Hollywood, and more come together for one night only to support the arts, and more specifically, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's fashion's biggest night, and this year's Met Gala cohosts and buzzy guests—Nicole Kidman! Venus Williams! Zoë Kravitz!—outdid themselves debuting jaw-dropping ensembles with art in mind. The dress code for 2026's ball is Fashion Is Art, which ties back to the Costume Institute's corresponding exhibition, Costume Art, and allows for plenty of varying interpretations. As a result, everyone joined the hosts and got creative, debuting masterpiece after masterpiece as they arrived at the base of the museum's carpeted steps.

Gigi Hadid is one such attendee, arriving on the Van Gogh–inspired carpet for her 11th Met Gala wearing a completely sheer, rhinestone-crusted gown by Miu Miu featuring flame and floral embroidery in gold, black, and silver. According to an interview with Vogue, she referenced two Miu Miu collections from the past—spring 1998 and spring 2011—taking the sheer base from the former and the embroidery from the latter. She paired the dress with a smattering of diamond jewelry by Jessica McCormack. I'm talking over 33 carats worth.

Given the translucent nature of her dress, you can easily spot the panties she chose to wear underneath it: a pair of cream cheeky underwear. Around this time of year I usually have a good scroll through Gigi Hadid's Instagram page and street style pap shots to assess some of the new trends she's gravitating towards. As the owner of a knitwear brand and true fashion insider, the oldest Hadid sister is ofter a treasure trove for autumn styling inspiration.

Stepping out in New York this week the model affirmed that she's still the best source of new-in inspiration. Subbing out the casual trainers that she normally reaches for, instead Hadid jumped on board the chic boots trend that I've started to spot at some of my favourite high street brands this month.

Styling brown knee-high boots with a glossy mock-croc finish, the model's shoe choice imparted a sleek and autumnal silhouette whilst playing with proportions and adding interest to her look.

Cropping up across the high street, including at Reformation and H&M, knee-high brown boots are firmly set to be a major footwear trend this autumn. Just as polished as their black counterparts, but perhaps even more versatile owing to the fact they work with the lighter colours black can often feel too harsh against, this elegant boot adds a warm-looking finish an autumn outfit, without overwhelming the look.

Although denim shorts are a summer staple, not all styles are as easy to work with as others. The trend every fashion person seems to be wearing this summer—long denim shorts—is a prime example of this, but Gigi Hadid just displayed the perfect way to do so. While walking in NYC yesterday, Hadid wore a pair of distressed black denim shorts that came to her knees. She paired them with a cropped white tee, fun accessories, and a pair of trendy trainers that captured the 2024 outfit vibe in a nutshell.

When we last saw Gigi Hadid, it was on the Met Gala red carpet, wearing Thom Browne (one of the best looks of the night, in my opinion). The next day she was photographed looking equally chic, albeit far more casual, for an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. I’ll get to the casual look, but my eyes immediately went to her fancy footwear.

The mesh shoe trend (and sheer shoes, in general) is still going strong, which Hadid flawlessly proved. These particular mesh shoes are metallic slingback heels adorned with jewels and a bow. Her stylist Mimi Cuttrell posted a close-up of them to her Instagram story and you'll see what I mean by pretty. Hadid paired the shoes with a shirtdress from her brand Guest in Residence and a pair of light-wash baggy jeans (also still going strong) that served as the perfect counterpoint to the fancy shoes.

Miu Miu has new cult shoe on the rise, stealing the hearts of influencers and celebrities in its wake. The brand seems incapable of producing a product that doesn't rise to It status; its latest collection has proven to be rife with charming designs. Most recently we've been captivated by a certain pointed-toe, buckle-strap slingback that has quietly sneaked itself into the wardrobes of the some of the best dressed.

Gigi Hadid's Paris Fashion Week wardrobe was one for the books, per usual. She'll probably be the poster child of model-off-duty style for the 2020s when we look back. She's always effortlessly cool and trendy (but not overly so) and expertly mixes high and low items regularly. But let's discuss one outfit, in particular, that she wore between shows earlier this week in Paris.

Hadid's perfect autumn look consisted of many trends, including a maxi skirt, ballet flats, crop top, baseball cap, and Prada's Arqué Bag. But the thing that tied all the subtly trendy items together was her worn leather jacket that could've easily passed for vintage—alas, it was Mango. Welcome to the 2020s capri pants era. Okay, that distinction remains to be seen, but one very directional celebrity is embracing the returning trend. Gigi Hadid attended a friend's birthday party last night in New York City wearing a pair of denim capri pants with the slim fit of skinny jeans. 

In case the return of capri pants is new information to you, I should mention that the capri pants that fashion people and celebrities are all wearing are slim-fit, just as they were when they were a trend in the late 1950s and 1990s. The thing is, there are only so many things you can do with pants, so it's inevitable that every pant trend that ever was will eventually come back around—and probably multiple times. So capri pants were due for a comeback, like it or not.

Of all the hair trends to try, colour is arguably the most fun to experiment with. And 2023 is already no exception. From two-toned "Gemini hair” to Jenner-approved copper red, there are plenty of options to choose from if you’re looking to change up your hair colour this year. Expect to see new takes on classic blonde and the return of the grey, and if nostalgia is your thing, there’s something for you too, with Barbie-inspired blonde back in the spotlight.

"All shades of red will be popular in 2023, ranging from fiery reds and deep burgundy to warm auburn, " says Petty. "In particular, copper will be the standout colour. It can act as a midpoint for blondes and brunettes who are not ready to go fully dark or light, and it’s a great colour to brighten up your locks.”

Kendall Jenner unofficially kicked the copper-red trend off last summer, and we've seen a slew of celebrities, including Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski, follow suit.

2. Candlelit Brunette

If you’re after a subtler hair transformation, Petty says that every hair colour and texture can easily embrace this trend. "Candlelit hair uses low-contrast and mid-tone highlights to give the hair a warm and reflective feel as if it were glistening in firelight or candlelight,” she explains. "It’s also a perfect way to add dimension and brightness to flat and one-toned hair.”

3. Barbie Blonde

With Greta Gerwig’s Barbie set to hit screens in July, Barbie-inspired blonde will no doubt be a huge hair colour trend for summer 2023. This particular shade of blonde isn’t actually as icy as most people think it is, so be wary of blonde dye that leans a little too cool-toned or platinum. Instead, a warmer, golden blonde will be perfect for nailing this trend.

They key to embracing this trend? Maintain the same depth of bright blonde throughout the roots, lengths, and ends of your hair. Anya Taylor-Joy's 'do is textbook Barbie-blonde.

4. Gemini Hair

Petty predicts that we’ll see more of people mixing their natural hair colours with bright shades. "Gemini hair is a fun two-tone style,” she says. "Inspired by its astrological namesake, this will make you stand out from the crowd and allow you to express your personality.” For dark hair, Petty recommends using pinks, purples, greens, and blues, and for light hair she suggests blues, greens, reds, yellows, and black. "If you are concerned about your hair coping with a colour treatment, opt for more natural colour choices that will cause less damage and are easier to maintain,” she advises. "To maintain the colour, try to wash your hair less frequently, use a heat protectant when styling, and use plenty of hair masks to moisturise and nourish your hair.”

If you're after a low-maintenance approach to this trend, avoid adding colour at your roots (where regular top-ups will be needed), and keep it to the lengths and ends instead.

5. Glossy Brunette

Proving that brown hair doesn’t have to be boring, this particular colour trend is all about finish. For a glossy, shiny effect, you’ll need to focus on hydrating your hair via masks, serums, and oils. And if you’re not a natural brunette, consider using a cool-toned brown dye, which will lend hair the desired bright, glassy finish.

6. Peachy Rose

"Whilst ash and platinum blonde hair have been more popular in recent years, 2023 will see the rise of peachy rose blonde,” predicts Petty. "This is a perfect shade for those looking to make a fun and colourful change and is a great way to transition from winter to brighter spring and summer. While this trend is best for blonde hair, as pink takes more easily to light hair, it is still possible to achieve this look in darker hair colours. "To maintain the colour, dye your hair slightly brighter than the goal colour, as the hue will inevitably fade and tone down after a few washes,” says Petty. "Additionally, aim to use shampoo and conditioner targeted towards damaged hair to nourish it as much as possible.”

Adding deeper colour lower in the lengths of your hair helps to add dimension when experimenting with lighter colours.

7. Expensive Blonde

Expensive blonde is all about soft contrast and golden tones, and while the overall effect is incredibly natural, it can require a time-consuming and costly process involving both highlights and lowlights to really nail this trend. Essentially, you’ll need to ask for more than one shade of blonde—and expect to spend several hours in the salon chair.

8. Natural Grey 

Unlike the icy grey of the 2010s, this return to grey hair has a slight natural yet slightly futuristic vibe. In order to lean into your very best pro-ageing hue, you’ll need to opt for a more complex grey that works with your natural root colour. Note that a multi-dimensional colour requires upkeep (unless you've been blessed with natural silvery locks), so try to alternate between a high gloss and tonal shampoo with root touchups that follow the natural growth gradient of your 'grey'.

Thin hair may be low maintenance in some aspects (it requires little time to blow-dry and your salon appointments will be kept short), but it’s notoriously one of the most difficult hair types to style. Your main goal is probably all about adding lift, volume, and movement in order to create the illusion of thicker hair, but it takes more than a little effort to maintain shape and prevent roots from falling flat.

Of course, as with any hair type, getting the right haircut for thin hair sets the best foundation for finding a foolproof hairstyle. So what kinds of cuts should thin hair types request from the hairdresser? "Shorter styles adding textured layers for lots of movement can help the hair to look thicker and give body,” advises hairstylist and content creator Holly Carr. "And mid-length styles with soft face shaping are great for adding soft waves and still being able to put up. If you have long hair then Carr recommends keeping the weight in the ends. "Blunt cuts can help to keep the ends looking thicker and healthier for longer.”

When it comes to styling, Carr recommends creating waves or curls to add fullness. "You can curl the hair underneath or bring just a couple of pieces around the ears forwards toward the face,” she says. "This creates the illusion of thicker hair around the neck and face.” And for those who prefer up-dos? "Textured hair ups are also great,” she adds. "Try lifting the hair at the crown for volume and at the sides for width while any loose pieces add detail.”

An angled cut with longer strands towards the front adds movement and creates the illusion of more hair. Style with loose curls, like Keira Knightley, to add additional oomph.

Not only does a ribbon distract from thin hair by adding additional movement to the lengths of your ponytail, but it's also incredibly on trend.

14. Sleek Low Bun

Even though last fall feels like forever ago, I haven't forgotten that chunky loafers were the trend of the season. Every brand from high to low was making them, and they were selling out left and right. When a trend is that big, there's always the possibility of it tapering off after its peak, but that's not been the case with the aforementioned lug-sole loafers, which Gigi Hadid just confirmed for us in Paris.

I don't know about you, but I love the start of a new season, particularly the start of autumn/winter. As the leaves turn to fiery orange, and we swap our summer footwear for winter boots, I can't help but get swept up in that back-to-school feeling, pulling out my trusted knitwear and adding some new A/W trends to my wardrobe. Same for you? If so, it's only natural that we're also keen to update our hair as the seasons shift. While in summer, we might opt for lighter, golden hair colour such as balayage, in autumn and winter, it can be fun to embrace those warmer auburn and brunette shades. 1. Luxurious Copper

As soon as we saw Zendaya step out with this bouncy blowout and beautiful copper-brunette hair colour, we immediately pinned it down as one of the top autumn/winter 2022 hair trends to watch. "Colour-wise, I think we are going to see more auburn colours, as most people want a warmer effect to match the season, toning down their blonde or balayage pieces to more red tones, such as caramel brown warm, to match the mood of the season," says Max Andreas, hairstylist and expert at Claxton Hair. To keep that expensive-looking shine that you get with a new hair colour, be sure to use a regular hair mask to lock in the gloss.

2.'70s Shapes

Seventies haircuts and hairstyles are still a strong hair trend for autumn/winter 2022. "The '70s-blowout look is becoming a popular style and haircut in the salon," says Rebecca Watkins, hairstylist at Tweedie & Marshall Hairdressing. "Many of our clients are loving the chunky bangs and blow-dries with loads of volume and a big bouncy curl to finish it off."

"The '70s are still so influential for A/W 22," says Barry Maddocks, UK creative director of Haringtons. "The effortless half-up, half-down vibe is a strong vibe, and I’m totally here for it; think Brigitte Bardot, undone and effortless. This look is totally chic and is day-and-night appropriate." 

Here, Symphani Soto gives Bridgette Bardot's classic hairstyle a modern update. "To get the look, first I would create some movement throughout the hair using a GHD tong. Then, taking a Kent Brush large quill paddle brush, brush out by pulling some of the sides up and pinning in place," says Maddocks.

3. Undone Bun

Not just for working from home, a messy bun is a timeless classic, and a welcome antidote to the sleek buns we've been seeing of late. And hairstylists are seeing the return of the trend, too. "I think we will also see the return of the messy bun," notes Rhys Chiwara, hairstylist at November Collective salon.

4. Bottleneck Bangs

A nod to the '70s hair trends that we're seeing, fringes are big news for A/W 22, with bottleneck bangs making a great option. "Fringes and soft bottleneck bangs will reign supreme, giving us more of the much-loved '70s vibes," says Chiwara.

5. Natural Texture

More of a cultural shift than a trend, textured hair will continue to be embraced in its natural form. "For those with naturally textured hair, we will be seeing people embrace those stunning curls," says Maddocks. "Keeping the natural texture is super beautiful. Simone Rocha celebrated curls on the runway by teaming natural texture with hair accessories."

"Rather than working against your natural texture, work with it," says Paul Percival, the founder of Percy & Reed and a BaByliss global ambassador. "The shag haircut is a nice way to enhance a curl, and there is a type of shag cut to suit everyone, whether that's a soft fringe, square around the face or longer at the back. Whatever curl you have, there is a version to suit you. It all comes down to the layering," he adds.

6. '90s Bob

"Anything with a '90s vibe is still huge for 2022. Therefore, centre partings and boy bobs will still be in demand," predicts Percival. "When talking to your stylist about getting this look, make sure there is no graduation to the style. You want the bob to be completely square and straight, not higher at the back. It's all about sharp, sharp lines," he says.

"If the hair is heavy, you can soften the outline by texturizing through the ends," says Percival. "A great product to style this look is Percy & Reed Hold It Right There! Define & Hold Finish Cream. This is a perfect finisher for this style, as it is lightweight and can be applied to wet or dry hair for definition and hold. 7. Liquid Hair

Whether it be wet-look or super-glossy lengths, shine will be taken to new lengths in A/W 22. "This trend is stunning, and we saw models at the Fendi show sporting wet hair," says Maddocks. But if the wet look has you feeling fearful, you can still tap into the trend in a subtler way. "At home, I would blow-dry sleek and use a shine spray to give that stunning high-gloss finish," suggests Maddocks.

8. Bronzed Wood

"Shades of brown dominated A/W 22 fashion week, [with] designers such as Chloé, Chanel and ACNE Studios displaying the versatility and richness of this hue," says Wella Professionals digital craft expert Jordanna Cobella. "Bronzed Wood is a mixture of subtle caramel hues with darker neutral tones running throughout the hair. Think muted, multidimensional hues that add depth and movement to the hair," she says. What really makes the Bronzed Wood shade is the luxurious shine, making the colour look rich and luxurious.

9. Tweed Blonde

Much like the intertwining colours found in tweed, Tweed Blonde sees multiple shades of blonde weaved through the lengths of the hair for a multidimensional feel. "After periods of uncertainty, people tend to embrace warmer, richer tones that are nourishing and optimistic. We're seeing this trend transfer across to hair, with clients embracing warm golden honeycomb tones post-pandemic," says Cobella. "The beige-blonde trend has embraced a warmer palette with highs and lows of nude, beige and sandy tones. These warmer tones tend to reflect light more than ashier hues so will help the appearance of shine on the hair." 

"Wella Professionals' new in-salon Shinefinity service is perfect for achieving this look. The glaze can be woven throughout the hair to create a tweed effect, and because [it's] zero-damage, [it adds] a healthy-looking shine to the hair," says Cobella.

Ask your hair colourist to place different pieces of blonde into the hair for a three-dimensional look, which instantly makes hair look thicker, too.

"You don't have to be serving looks on a trip," Gigi Hadid told me during our chat. As I'm the girl who consistently has an overweight suitcase, you can imagine the wheels turning in my head during this moment. I've personally reached the point where I have the negotiation process of getting through the airport with a 60-pound suitcase down to a science. After hearing from the most stylish frequent flyer I've ever spoken to, I'm starting to consider changing my ways.

Hadid knows how to holiday, so it only makes sense that she would be the host of H&M's latest launch, Hôtel Hennes. The fictional destination boasts a cast of characters who make the idea of going on a getaway even more alluring. After watching the campaign video, all I can think about (and shop for) are vacation essentials. Every look you'll see screams "high-fashion luxury getaway," yet they all come from H&M at a totally accessible price point. You have to see the video for yourself to know what I mean.

The opening scene had been living in my mind rent-free ever since I first laid eyes on it, so I called Hadid up myself to get the scoop. We chatted about her holiday and work travel memories, but as a fashion person, I had to ask, How does someone who travels so often pack? She gave me tips that I think might actually change the consistently overpacked girl that I am. Read on to change your travel life forever.

What is one of your favorite vacation memories? 

Wakeboarding in Tahiti is the best. [The water] is literally a bath—so warm and beautiful—so even if you fall, it doesn't matter. I loved that.

What do you wear when wakeboarding?

When I'm doing water sports, I'm not going to go there with the outfit. I would rather be comfortable while wakeboarding. Usually a one-piece or a rashguard or at least bottoms that don't tie. 

I'm sure you have packing down to a science with how often you travel for work. Do you have any tips for the less experienced traveler?

Oh, I'm known for it. I always show up for a four- or five-day job with a carry-on, and everyone's like, "How did you do that?" My tips are to know your basics. You don't have to be serving looks on a work trip especially, but even on a vacation, know your basics. Have your favorite bikini shape in a few colours. Bring a lot of accessories so you can wear your favourite bikini for a few days with something thin like a throw-on. Make it more about mixing the pieces you have into a few different outfits. Then, you're just going to have a more pleasant time.

Are there any packing mishaps you've had that have taught you lessons?

My equation works if I remember all the pieces, but when you get there and you don't have the cashmere sweats and that was one of the staple pants that you were going to bring, it can get tough. If you're going to have an equation for the minimal packing, you have to have all of it. You can't forget.

How has motherhood impacted your experience when packing and traveling?

I am a super organizer/list-maker, so when I'm traveling with Khai, it's all about packing and double-checking the lists. Now when I travel alone, I feel like I'm forgetting something because I forget how easy it is to just pack for yourself. I don't know if it's made me different. It just brought out more of my organization because I'd rather forget something for myself than for her. I already was list obsessed and organized. It just made me more of a control freak probably.

If you had to choose one color scheme to revolve your vacation wardrobe around, what would it be?

My favorite colour is yellow. I would say yellow. White is pretty on vacation or a tan, some sort of neutral, and then maybe pink or lavender. Something girly.

Now, tell us your travel capsule wardrobe.

For work, it's trousers, a white tee, a black tee, a cashmere sweater, sneakers, boots, and maybe a scarf—things that are versatile. And then, maybe something fun is thrown in there, whatever that season you're loving. If it's something super fun that season, then bring one fun thing and the rest like basics and stuff that you can style a bunch of different ways. There's no reason you can't wear the same pairs of pants with two different T-shirts to the airport.

If you had to build a capsule wardrobe for a trip to, say, Hôtel Hennes and could only pack five things, what would you bring?

I would bring a few bikinis. I would bring a pool dress that can also be styled for dinner, whether that means opening it during the day and then you close it at night and belt it. I always need sweatpants, even if I'm going to a warm place. I feel like once you get inside from the sun and it's nighttime, you're going to feel cold anyway. So cozy sweats and a hoodie or short sweats and a hoodie, some sort of denim—either shorts or ripped jeans—and then your favorite tees and one shoe that's fancier and one that's a flip-flop that you can wear around all day.

What is your go-to uniform right now for a typical spring day? 

I'm really into business or workwear pants that are more low waist and baggier and then keeping the top a tighter crop T-shirt and then super-fun jewellery and sneakers.

We're so close to summer! Do you have any favorite trends you're excited to break out as soon as the temperatures rise?

I mean, I guess I'm excited to have fun with hats. I'm having fun with hats all season, but besides that, what other trends are happening? Maybe I'm having a lot of fun with mixing prints and bright colours. Sometimes, that's a bit awkward in the winter, so maybe I'll have more fun with that as it gets warmer.

If you were doing a closet clean-out right now, what trends would you say are feeling outdated to you?

The standard bucket hat. The bucket hats that I'm keeping are the ones that are a little bit out-there or bigger shaped or like a beanie. I'm just not falling in between, but maybe this summer I'll do a cowboy hat or one of those dad fisher hats. It's almost as if we're going to go into the dad-sneaker hat but the soccer-dad sun hat that you can buy at Walmart.

On the topic of accessories, are there any that you think are super important for summer since it's part of your packing list? 

I am not a bracelet person. I like a ring sometimes, but not really on vacation. I'm like a necklace person. I can do a fun earring, but if you're on vacation, go for the really cool, young designers that do beaded stuff. I think to have more fun with it—not necessary that the jewellery has to be luxurious.

Alexa Chung is just one of the celebrities who have worn a specific Mango coat of late. 

Few things make the Who What Wear team speechless, but when we spotted not one, not two, not three, but four stylish celebrities wearing the same Mango coat, we were legitimately lost for words. This was back at the start of 2022, but as the chillier months have returned, the high-street retailer has just reissued this A-list-approved coat. That's right; the best seller is back! Of course, celebrities wearing high-street isn’t a one-off phenomenon—those whose looks we’re going to break down today have certainly worn their fair share of affordable buys in their time. But seldom do we see several celebs all opt for the same piece that comes in at an affordable price. And even more seldom is it that it makes a comeback after all but disappearing in a shopping furore.

Mango’s coats have been incredibly strong this season, with many of us still refreshing in hopes of bagging that shearling jacket. But never before have they been given so much attention from the A-list. Katie Holmes was the first celebrity I noticed wearing Mango outerwear—a green peacoat she wore to run errands in New York City in early January. Unsurprisingly, it sold out, and life resumed as normal. Then, whilst catching up on any celebrity outfits I’d missed, Gigi Hadid’s look featuring a beige double-breasted coat with a perfectly exaggerated silhouette was so chic it immediately commanded my attention. For some reason, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d seen this coat somewhere before. Then it dawned on me: I had just scrolled past it on Mango’s website.

Like an alarm bell going off in my mind, I suddenly realised that Hadid wasn’t the only celebrity to have worn this woollen Mango coat. Alexa Chung, Katie Holmes and Sienna Miller had snapped it up and worn it. My Mango contact confirmed my theory that all four women had indeed worn it—the one you now see before you. After something of a frenzy, the coat sold out, leaving those who missed it disappointed in the process. Today, however, I have good news—the very same Mango coat has just been restocked with a few updates—there's an additional button, for one—and is currently available in all sizes. Though, I don’t expect this to be the case for long.

A testament to the coat's versatility, Hadid, Miller, Chung and Holmes styled their Mango coats completely differently to one another. Hadid opted for brown check blazer and split-hem leggings, while Chung layered hers over a cream ruffle-hem midi dress, which she finished with black patent Mary Jane shoes and cute grey socks. Taking a more casual approach, Miller styled hers with straight-leg jeans and trending cropped Uggs. Holmes? She stuck to a neutral and creamy colour palette for her ensemble. Though these looks first appeared earlier this year, the fact that they still feel incredibly modern proves the timeless nature of this coat.

Don't get us wrong. No one gets all dressed up quite like Gigi Hadid. For proof, count the runway appearances. Is Gigi Hadid an ardent Who What Wear follower? I ask because it was only the other day that we were extolling the fashion virtues of Mango's many brilliant crochet pieces, highlighting that they are some of the strongest on the high street for this top-line summer trend. It's safe to say that we're all looking forward to transitioning our wardrobes into spring. New mom Gigi Hadid seems to be prioritizing comfort these days, but then again who isn't? This is why leggings have experienced somewhat of a resurgence as of late. Denim and sweatpants may have stolen their thunder, but it was only temporary, as fashion people, celebrities, and tons of cool girls on Instagram are once again embracing them. For months now, the freshest legging trend you can buy has been slit-hem leggings (see the proof in this story and this one from earlier this year). And now Hadid is pushing the trend forward.

While out in NYC over the weekend, Hadid stepped out in a cropped puffer, slit leggings, and neon Nike sneakers. Next up, the biggest Spring/Summer 2021 trends you need to know. 

I go on about this a lot, but nothing gets me down more than the fact that my hair is lifeless and lacking texture. I can spend up to two hours tonging it and misting it with several different sprays and still not manage to achieve the effortlessly tousled look I so crave. At the end of the whole ordeal, I’m left with one of two hair looks: matted, flat and greasy as a result of the excess product in there or a Dolly Parton–esque bouffant. 

If you ask me, achieving beachy lengths that look effortless is one of my hardest beauty feats. And while I’m still eagerly anticipating my post-lockdown haircut, it’s safe to say that I am looking for all of the tips to style out my rather ridiculously long hair right now. Luckily for me, I recently got the chance to sit down with Laura Polko, T3 ambassador and hairstylist to the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kate Bosworth, Lea Michele, Lucy Hale and Martha Hunt, to discover exactly how to achieve effortlessly tousled hair. This is what she had to say…

Dry Shampoo Makes All the Difference

It turns out a huge problem that so many of us face is that we’re repeatedly opting for the wrong styling products. "I see so many people using too much spray. When you use too much texture spray, it can make the hair look matted,” she warns. The answer? Steer clear of sticky texturising sprays and instead opt for targeted dry shampoo application. "Just take a small amount of dry shampoo to the crown. Spray it, and then shake it all out. It’s the best way to get that undone look.”

Invest in Your Tools

A key point that Polko is keen to drill home is that relying on product to style your hair just isn’t enough and usually won’t work. "It’s all in the tool,” she says. It would seem that there are lots of things many of us don’t consider when shopping for hair tools that can totally make or break the end result. "A hair tool that reheats itself often will make things a lot easier. It means that you don’t have to go back over things or end up with one half that looks dramatically different from the other.”

The other thing to keep an eye on? The lengths of the plates. "So many people struggle to curl their hair with straighteners, but the key is finding a pair that uses longer plates so that the hair doesn’t fall out,” she says. But if you still can’t nail it, there are other things you can try. The ultimate undone, natural-looking style, according to Polko, is flat-iron waves. "It’s not a look that comes across as overly styled. The key is, though, to always open up the face. Always bend up first. Otherwise, you get unnatural volume where you really don’t want it.”

Face Framing Is a Thing

Speaking of opening up the face, Polko suggests that this isn’t something that needs to take time or be a laborious task. In fact, it can be super quick and easy. "It’s called face framing. You don’t have to do anything with the hair except for one really subtle wave just where the eye is. This is where your hair would naturally tuck beside your ear,” she advises. If this seems weird at first, just try it and see the difference it makes. "The minute you add that, it makes everything look really natural. It’s subtle, but it really opens up the whole face.”

Never Forget the Ends

Here’s one that I can definitely take note of. When styling your own hair, it can be tempting to put all of your effort and attention into the middle section, where the eye is naturally drawn to. However, Polko warns that neglecting the ends can totally make or break your ’do. "You have got to pay attention to the ends. It’s the key to natural-looking tousled hair,” she says.

With the ends being the most fragile part of our strands, it makes sense that we are often reluctant to inflict heat upon them. However, making sure you use a hardworking heat protector first should do the job at protecting them. "If your hair is long, the key is to make sure the ends all go in different directions. If it’s short, curl them under a little bit. Naturally, the ends would all be doing a different thing,” says Polko.
