Next Up: The Autumn/Winter 2023 Fashion Trends That Really Matter

Off the back of Copenhagen Fashion Week, our attention has pivoted to all things Scandi. Ingrained with an appreciation for exquisite tailoring, the Scandi set know a thing or two about getting dressed. Whilst we saw a sea of elevated neutrals up and down the streets of Copenhagen, brands took a bolder approach on the runways. Ganni's collection saw wearable items in deep, rich tones peppered throughout. Playing with a multitude of materials, the show drew inspiration from the rapid AI developments and their yet-uncertain impact on the world.

Owing to this, the collection contained a collaboration with AI artist Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm, amongst others. Another notable collaboration seen on the runway, which is due for release on Wednesday, was the Ganni x New Balance collab. Three pairs of trainers will be released as part of the highly anticipated collaboration, and the chunky yellow pair is already at the top of my wish list.

Whilst we anticipate the arrival of the S/S 24 collection in-store, Ganni's current offerings remain as tempting as ever. 

Ganni has long offered excellent knitwear options. Unafraid to experiment with colour and texture, boldness has always paid off for the brand. A favourite in the Who What Wear UK office, we can't get enough of Ganni's perfect sweater vests. At the start of each new season, denim always pops up in one form or another, making it a key driver in sales for many designers and a growing way for customers to buy into luxury brands at a slightly more entry-level price point. But for spring/summer 2023, there is another level of newness about it. Now, don't panic—your classic straight-leg jeans aren't going anywhere, but there's no denying that they are by now considered a firm wardrobe staple and instead there are some new denim styles worth having on your radar for 2023.

For the past couple of years, stonewash jeans have been the focus, but this season sees way more flexibility in washes and fits, and the return of Y2K trends sees design elements such as cut-off waistbands, flared split ankles and twisted seam skirts take centre stage, too.

Style Notes: A denim trench is an easy new-season buy and a great transitional alternative to classic colourways such as beige and khaki.

Style Notes: When this dress first appeared on the Zara website I signed up immediately for notifications of when it would be going live. This strapless bandeau can be layered with a cardi and knee-high boots right now or worn with strappy sandals in the evening.

Style Notes: Meet the Jozeys, Ganni's must-have wide-leg jeans. Now, I needed a larger size so they would be longer in the leg and a tad slouchier, however, they were unavailable. I tried on my normal size instead to give you the gist! I styled them with Ganni's signature sculpted blazer to juxtapose the casual wash. Simply add on a pair of heels and you have an easy day-to-night denim look.

Style Notes: This will most definitely be a marmite look, but if nothing else I felt a little nostalgic in this mesh, denim-printed top with the fluted hem skirt. I once owned these exact items, and much to my joy, I can buy them again thanks to Miaou, a go-to for Y2K fashion.

They say that within the first seven seconds of meeting someone your first impressions are drawn. So, for at least six months of the year (and that is a modest calculation), the outerwear you wear is arguably one of the first things someone will see on you, making what jacket you choose a pretty important investment, don’t you think?

Weddings can be hard to dress for. Maybe it's being held in a different country or climate, maybe you won’t know many people there and are feeling nervous about being judged, or maybe you need to find a dress that can take you comfortably from a church ceremony to a late night (and early morning) on the dance floor. There’s often a lot of pressure placed on this outfit choice too. That may be the fanciest outing you have planned that year, so you’ll want to make the most of it. If it’s been the topic of conversation amongst friends for months already, that outfit will likely appear in many photos for years, if not decades, to come.

With all of this in mind, my key thought when finding a wedding guest outfit is always, Will I be comfortable in this all day? For example, if I know it’s going to be a hot day, I would look for a dress made from natural fibres, 100% organic cotton or silk. I don’t want to be sweating in polyester. I would also look for something I can wear with comfortable underwear. There have been too many times that I’ve worn a dress that required a strapless bra, only to find I want to viciously rip off the metal-filled torture devise only two hours into a 12-hour event—never again! I’m actually a big fan of certain shapewear, as I love the feeling of being secure, and I feel like it helps my posture and eases back pain. But I would suggest wearing the shapewear before the event as a little test run. Sometimes, you might not notice areas that niggle without wearing it for a few hours, so it’s best to know beforehand. I go for shapewear shorts to prevent thigh chafing and will sometimes wear a shapewear slip dress on top of these and my bra for a smoother invisible-underwear look under tighter dresses.

You also want to feel comfortable mentally. For me, this is usually making sure I feel comfortable with how low-cut my top is, as I feel happier in an outfit that covers my chest. I’m all for pushing your boundaries when it comes to fashion. However, I believe that a day-long event like a wedding might be a better place to push your boundaries with something like colour or print, rather than shape or silhouette. Basically, you don’t want to be pulling up or tugging down areas of your outfit all day because you don’t feel sufficiently covered.

When choosing your outfit, you need to remember to look on your invite to see if the couple have given a dress code. But I always go by the rule that it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve likely seen that I enjoy a colourful or printed outfit. I very much enjoy a bold look. I also really enjoy the conversations these looks start. I find an outfit with a little story to tell is a brilliant way to meet people, and it’s especially helpful if you don’t know many people at the event.

I would take this opportunity to look to smaller brands that might have more unusual made-to-order or pre-sale pieces, such as Mary Benson, Loud Bodies and Olivia Rubin, as you usually have plenty of time to plan. I would also check out rental sites like Hurr or By Rotation. Hurr has dresses from brands such as Ganni, Selkie and my own brand, Dolly Rocket. Then as a starting point on By Rotation, I would search for the profiles "lucy_earnshaw,” "Jbird” and "abimarvel,” as they have lots of plus-size options you can rent. Next, I would look at ASOS Edition and Never Fully Dressed, which always have lots of beautiful dress options. One recent exciting addition to the plus-size world has been Sister Jane (available on ASOS). Although its plus-size pieces only go up to a size 22, I am always here for progress! Marks and Spencer’s has some gorgeous dresses in at the moment which are available up to a size 24 and, in some cases, are even available in longer lengths if you’re taller. I would also have a look on Simply Be, and although I find that some of their event dresses aren’t my style, there are a few gorgeous pieces by the brands Anaya With Love, Hope & Ivy and Jo By Joanna Hope. Don’t forget that Anthropologie, Warehouse and Karen Millen also have plus-size options now. Finally, if you have a higher budget, it’s worth looking at Marina Rinaldi, Coyan, Dima Ayad and 11 Honoré.

What’s the beauty of a maxi dress I hear you ask? Where to begin. Firstly, a maxi dress is possibly the easiest wardrobe staple to wear and style. If you spent the downtime over Christmas break like I did (catching up with Instagram while binging Netflix, obviously), then you will probably have spotted one jumper cropping up again and again. Ganni’s scarf-neckline cable-knit jumper is a thing of beauty, and it is a piece we would definitely consider to be a modern classic here at Who What Wear. Next up, The Biggest Spring/Summer 2021 Trends You Need to Know

Over the last few years, Copenhagen Fashion Week has become one of the most anticipated events on the fashion calendar. From Ganni to Cecilie Bahnsen and Baum und Pferdgarten, the city is home to some of the most coveted up-and-coming cult labels and is renowned for its adventurous and enviable street style.

I have never really been into logo or slogan T-shirts as an adult, but perhaps it's because I wore so many terrible ones as a teenager that I've been semi-scarred for the last 15 years. Anyone remember those "Boys Are Stupid Throw Rocks at Them" T-shirts from the brand David & Goliath? So dubious. Or the slightly less offensive craze for the Paul Frank monkey? Those were the days. I have pretty much steered clear of them ever since—that is until Ganni had its say.

Of course, it would be Ganni, the cult Scandi brand beloved by fashion girls everywhere, that would lure me back into the logo tee's loving arms. Last year the brand dropped a collection of logo T-shirts, that included whimsical motifs such as clover leaves, smiley faces (very '90s), crystal balls and even dolphins. You'd be forgiven for thinking that some of these tees look like something you'd buy on a beach holiday at the age of 6, but I kinda love how Ganni has embraced the kitsch vibe of the slogan tee. And of course, it always helps that the designer slogan at hand is more of an 'in-the-know' brand than you Guccis and Burberrys. 

Coming with an oversized, slouchy fit, I opted for the cloverleaf design as it felt a little less novelty that the other designs. I've been wearing mine tucked into wide-leg trousers and layered over roll necks while WFH, but I can just tell I'm going to live in it this spring with everything from jeans to midi skirts. I love the comfy finish of Zeena's check-trousers–and–logo-tee pairing. She's wearing with fluffy slippers now (very lockdown), but it would also look amazing with chunky sandals. 

This is my reference point for styling the T-shirt this spring and summer. Camille manages to make the sporty look seem to chic.

Whenever I invest in a seasonal trend, I do my best to ensure it aligns with my personal style. But sometimes, I don't think twice before I find myself wearing some things obviously influenced by scrolling Instagram. It happens, and most of the time I feel great (I'm still as in love with my pearl Shrimps bag as the day I bought it). But sometimes I buy into a trend and I am unsure how to keep it feeling as fresh and exciting as it felt on the day one. That is a skill I have acquired over time.

It's my favourite way to shake a up a look, especially in the colder months. This year, I'm looking for floral lace stockings (I'm thinking in white) to add to my wardrobe.

But the way we approach sale shopping is the same way we approach regular shopping. We never advise spending needlessly or without a strategy. While there are rare sale-shopping unicorns out there—pieces so amazing that you can justify buying them on a whim—we’ve found that if the item (be it a bag, coat, or pair of shoes) didn’t pique our interest when it was full-price, then we probably shouldn’t buy it just because it’s been reduced.

I've never met a Ganni dress I didn't like. Despite having launched in 2009, it wasn't until 2016 that Ganni became ubiquitous among the fashion crowd thanks to Creative Director Ditte Reffstrup's ability to showcase a new, more modern Scandi style. For years now, fashion girls have been hooked on the pieces that are directional but not too out there, the Who What Wear team included. Initially, when the label caught the eye of the industry, you couldn't move for the Cherry Bomb and Space Cowboy tees seen on every other street styler. Then came the ballon-sleeve jumpers in bright colours that remain popular today.

Style Notes: Ganni florals are never frumpy and are always cool. 

But I truly believe the item that has real lasting power is a Ganni dress. The beauty about these pieces is that they could have been created five years ago and still appear on-trend today. I have a few theories about why this is the case. Firstly, the contemporary brand has stuck to the stuff it knows best. While it dips its toes into newer styles or prints here and there, on the whole, you can rely on it to give you similar style pieces over and over, with a few tweaks for the season. Second, it's tapped into what women really want—clothes that are comfortable but look cool. All of this has led the brand to create cult sellout dress after cult sellout dress. 

Early fans of the brand's dresses will remember it started offering prairie-style frocks way before cottage-core became a thing. There have also been sheer embellished party dresses and easy shirt dresses. Satin dresses with ruffles have been another cornerstone of its frock repertoire. And perhaps the most recognisable Ganni dresses are those that come in florals or leopard print. 

Style Notes: Ganni might be very good at doing day dresses, but here's proof that the brand does a great evening look, too, with this zebra-print body-con frock.

For 2023, it's clear the brand's now-global influence isn't slowing down, and their dresses continue to appear in the most stylish wardrobes the world over (albeit most commonly on the streets of Scandinavia and London). The most recent Ganni show at Copenhagen Fashion Week was only a couple of weeks ago, and it's still one of the hottest tickets in town. While the designs felt altogether more refined for the year ahead—the butterfly-themed show also featured sequins and colour, so will undoubtedly still feed those anti-minimalists (and probably a lot of Gen Z) who crave more personality and fun in their wardrobes.

Earlier this year, we saw the rise of a trend called cottagecore, an aesthetic that romanticised the simplicity of country life, with Instagrammers carrying wicker baskets filled with flowers and baking home-cooked meals amongst idyllic remote settings. 

In conjunction with a global pandemic, this yearning for simpler days and a return to basics arrived at precisely the right time. This summer, however, it seems brands have taken this concept one step farther, replacing prairie dresses with landscape motifs that depict cloud-filled skies, roaming horses or sunrises over the horizon. It's no longer about dressing like you belong in the countryside. Now it's about dressing to emulate it.

We first noticed this niche when House of Sunny released its Daybreak cardigan, which featured a knitted sunrise print and made quite the impact on Instagram, as seen on influencers everywhere including Claire Most, Renia Jaz, Amy Julliette Lefévre and more. Since then, we've also spotted Lirika Matoshi's cloud jumper, which emulates a peaceful day in the park, and Ganni's whimsical galloping-horse print, which feels as if it were taken directly from a storybook.

Over the last few months, many of our lives have changed immeasurably. From a complete adjustment in work routines to drastically altered social lives, relatively nothing is the same as it was back in February. While we all are processing these changes differently, adjusting to a life in which many choices are beyond our control, one factor that has remained within our control is the way we choose to get dressed in the morning.

It doesn't happen too regularly, but every so often, an item is released that is so good practically everyone on our editorial team has it on their wish list. We've all heard the phrase "all dressed up and nowhere to go," but this year the term has been given entirely new meaning. With restrictions on social gatherings and forced closures of pubs, bars and restaurants, we all literally have nowhere to go, though that certainly hasn't stopped our favourite influencers and It girls from continuing to dress up. Between shimmering minidresses and floral embellished midis, influencers worldwide are persisting with putting on their finest even if it is simply to bake a cake, work from home or lounge on the couch.

A few weeks back, Who What Wear UK introduced Dress-Up Fridays, an initiative which encourages us all to put on something extra special to celebrate the conclusion of the week (and ensure we're getting out of our activewear at least once every seven days). And with influencers constantly sharing images of themselves at home in bright, beautiful dresses, it couldn't be easier to find inspiration to put on you Friday best.

From Gucci's Marmont crossbody bag to Bottega Veneta's enviably cool pouch clutch or Jacquemus's Le Chiquito, certain items develop a cult-like status amongst fashion enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. Though, cult status aside, you might be asking yourself which brands actually hold their value? Or which brands are the most in-demand when it comes to resale? 

Well, thanks to Vestiaire Collective, we just might have the answers, as the designer resale site has compiled some statistics to let us know which brands are the most popular and which ones are on the rise. 

According to Vestiaire Collective, Gucci continues to be the golden child of the resale market, as the brand came out on top as the best-selling on Vestiaire for 2019. What's more is the brand actually grew an impressive 39% year on year in terms of sales volume. Open for Vintage, another vintage luxury resale site, also saw an increase in demand for Gucci. As the brand explained, at the beginning of the year, Gucci accounted for 1.4% of overall sales on the site. However, it ended the year making up around 13% of total sales.

Aside from Alessandro Michele's obvious success with Gucci, according to Vestiaire, Dior also saw a 40% year-on-year growth in sales volume, while Prada's sales also increased by 39% year on year.

In terms of emerging brands, Ralph Lauren had the highest growth rate with a staggering 234% sales increase year on year on Vestiaire, while influencer-favourite Ganni followed closely behind with a 189% year-on-year sales increase.

So whether you're choosing to purchase from the resale market or plan to buy your items new with the thought of reselling in the future, according to Vestiaire, the four brands below are definitely a good investment.
