I sample launches from luxury fragrance houses months before launch and test the best luxury fragrances all year round—trust me: I've done the boots-on-the-ground (or perfume-on-the-blotter) journalism.

Picking the very best luxury perfumes of 2026, however, wasn't an easy task. But after rummaging through my perfume shelves, spritzing this year's launches, studying perfume trends and charting the number of compliments each one elicited, I've compiled my list of the best luxury fragrances that are truly worth the investment. When it comes to skincare, we're always looking for brands that combine efficacy with cutting-edge innovation. For us, that brand is SkinCeuticals, and P-Tiox Cream is a stellar example. This powerhouse moisturiser contains a patent-pending formula packed with peptides, niacinamide and lipo-hydroxy acid, and works to plump, smooth and hydrate the skin. No wonder our judges couldn't get enough.

"I was blown away by just how much difference this made to my skin," said Eleanor Hartley, medical director at Hart Medical. "[I saw] impressively visible improvements in skin quality, texture, pores and visible lines after only a week of use. Fragrance is subjective; what smells good to one person might not smell good to another. But if there's one thing our expert judges agreed on, it was that Parfums de Marly Athénaïs smells amazing. It's no surprise, really, with a blend of bergamot, orange flower, jasmine sambac, vanilla and amber.

"Exfoliation can be tricky for sensitive skin, but this gentle formulation means that anyone can use it," says Who What Wear UK beauty contributor Perdita Nouril. First up, let's talk about the best new fragrance. There have been some incredible perfume launches this year, but according to our judges, Parfums de Marly Athénaïs stole the show.

Here at Who What Wear UK, we champion innovation, and our expert judges were so impressed by Amouage's Sequence. We love it when brands get creative with their scents. Case in point: Chloé Atelier Des Fleurs Sous Les Pins. I was lucky enough to judge this one, and I fell in love with the captivating scent.

It smells like walking through a forest on your way to a hidden five-star retreat, with notes of pine needle absolute, bergamot and eucalyptus. It's unlike anything else I've come across, and I know I will wear it for years to come.

Best Classic Perfume

Sometimes, all you want is a classic perfume that you know you can rely on all year round. According to our judges, that's exactly what Givenchy L'Interdit delivers.

"I am infatuated with the constant reinvention of L'Interdit and how it has evolved over the years, but the explosion of white florals that is the original eau de parfum is still one of the most magnetising perfumes around, even in 2026," says Shannon.

Best Fragrance Reinvention

Speaking of scents that reinvent themselves, we have to mention Tom Ford's Soleil Neige. Reformulated in 2025, this perfume is not to be missed.

"I've fallen for this fragrance," says Eleanor. "It really captures that feeling of brisk, snowy mountain air contrasted with the warmth and cosiness of a luxurious chalet—it's very Tom-Ford-winter-coded. It has made its way into my permanent rotation of fragrances, which says a lot. It's unlike anything else I've smelled, and I adore the warming dry-down that has me repetitively sniffing my wrists throughout the day. It also has incredible lasting power; I can still smell it on my skin even eight hours later. I know I'll be repurchasing this when I inevitably use up my bottle."

Best Fragrance Development

A similarly striking scent, our judges couldn't get enough of Angels' Share on the Rocks by Kilian Paris.

"I absolutely adore this scent, and it has become one of my most-worn perfumes of the summer," says Shannon. "It smells bright and cooling, drenched in summer sun, but also warm, spicy and deep with the core cognac DNA. It is sweet and has an addictively moreish quality that has to be smelled to be believed."

Best Niche Fragrance

These days, no one wants to smell like everyone else, which is why we're always on the lookout for the best niche fragrances. This year, our judges were blown away by The Merchant of Venice Rococò 26.

A blend of saffron, clove, caramel accord and jasmine, the fragrance feels as lavish as the bottle itself. Who What Wear UK editor-in-chief Jane McFarland was particularly impressed by how long-lasting it is.

Body sprays have come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days of spritzing myself with sickly sweet body mists at school; now there's a range of sophisticated options available. Our top choice? Space NK's Paros Tides Hair & Body Mist.

"This is more expensive than other body mists I've tried, but in my opinion, it's so much nicer," says Who What Wear UK branded content editor Rebecca Rhys-Evans. "The crisp, refreshing scent is subtle, but it lasts so well."

A hair perfume is my trick to smelling good all day long. In fact, it's often the thing that earns me the most compliments. When testing, our judges loved the Balenciaga 100% Hair Mist, praising its luxurious, floral-focused scent.

"This mist is long-lasting and feels lightweight on my hair," says Who What Wear UK junior writer Brittany Davy. "In true Balenciaga fashion, it smells extremely expensive."

You didn't think we'd leave out home fragrance, did you? You probably know by now that we're huge fans of Diptyque's candles, but it's the Rhubarbe scent that received top marks from our expert judges.

"This is a mouthwatering aroma of rich berries with a hint of peppercorns, and it feels perfectly autumnal," says Jane.

I truly believe anyone can wear whatever perfume they want, but there's no denying that there are some incredibly good men's scents on the market, and I thought it was about time we talked about them. In my opinion, men's fragrances are some of the most captivating. Alongside cult classics like Dior Sauvage and Chanel's Bleu de Chanel, under-the-radar and niche scents deserve just as much attention for their unique olfactory creations.

1. YSL Myslf

My favourite men's fragrance of all time is Myslf by YSL. It only launched in 2023, but in my opinion, it's one of the best scents on the market. It has that signature fresh, woody opening you'll find in lots of cult men's fragrances; however, once it dries down on the skin, the warm, rich ambrofix will have you totally hooked. It's fresh and bold yet smooth and sensual, and I'm yet to meet anyone who hasn't fallen in love on the first spritz. Oh, and have I mentioned that Austin Butler is the global ambassador? That's definitely a selling point, if you ask me.

2. Dior Sauvage

When it comes to men's fragrances, nothing's more iconic than Dior Sauvage. But here's the thing: it's an icon for a reason. The fresh, sexy, woody scent is a total head-turner, and for an eau de toilette, it's surprisingly punchy. However, if you want to smell a little bit different from everyone else, we recommend Dior Sauvage Elixir (£149). It has a similar vibe, but the olfactory composition is a little more complex, and the scent lasts so long.

3. Giorgio Armani I Will

Whilst there are lots of classic choices out there, I'm always keeping my eye on new perfume launches, and Armani's latest creation definitely gets top marks from me. I'd call this fragrance quietly confident. It blends fresh bergamot with soft lavender for an inviting olfactory experience with hidden depth. Allow it to unfurl on the skin, and it'll soon reveal notes of woody leather and vanilla absolute. It feels like an incredibly stylish choice for any modern fragrance lover.

4. Carolina Herrera Bad Boy Cobalt Absolute

If you're after a long-lasting scent, you need to know about Bad Boy Cobalt Absolute by Carolina Herrera. An intoxicating blend of lavender, white truffle, oakwood and vanilla, it's a woody, smokey, earthy delight. I encourage my boyfriend to wear it every time we go out for dinner. It's that good.

5. Massimo Dutti Red Evening

I was out shopping with my boyfriend when I discovered this work of art. He was trying on clothes at Massimo Dutti, so I decided to browse the men's fragrances whilst I waited, and I bought this for him straight away when I smelled it. It's unlike any other men's fragrance I've come across. Think warm, rich and sensual, with a blend of rose, oud and amber. It's perfect for this time of year, and it smells so much more expensive than its £40 price tag.

6. Parfums de Marly Layton

When it comes to luxury fragrances, it doesn't get much better than Parfums de Marly. If you're after a men's scent from the brand, I highly recommend Layton. What I love about this scent is that it doesn't follow the typical mould of a men's fragrance. Instead, it blends fresh, fruity notes with a floral composition, finishing with spicy pepper and earthy patchouli. It's the kind of scent I could see myself stealing all the time thanks to its elegant appeal.

7. Prada Paradigme

This has definitely been one of my favourite men's fragrances as of late. It feels like a new take on a typically "masculine" aroma, with geranium adding a fresh, green, floral element. It's woody and airy, with delicate undertones that keep you coming back for more. With Tom Holland as its global ambassador, I can see this reaching cult status very soon.

8. Creed Absolu Aventus

Creed Aventus is a popular men's fragrance, but in my opinion, it's Absolu Aventus that stands out as the most sophisticated option. Every time I smell it, I discover a brand-new note to fall in love with. It opens with a fruity blend of bergamot, blackcurrant and grapefruit, but the sensual, spicy heart soon reveals itself on the skin. Trust me: it's the kind of scent you save for special occasions.

9. Chanel Bleu de Chanel

This Chanel fragrance is so timeless that I don't doubt it will be in this edit for many years to come. It's fresh, woody, warm... basically everything you want, housed in a sleek blue bottle to keep proudly on display. If it's good enough for Jacob Elordi, then it's good enough for me...

Certain perfumes just scream a season. There are florals for spring (original, I know), airy ozones and zesty citruses for summer; and of course, smoky perfumes for winter. Now that we're well and truly in the throes of autumn, I can't help but be drawn to this rather complex and vast category of scents.

Some quite literally bottle the enveloping, heady aroma of bonfire smoke, while others add a smoulder to florals, gourmands and fruits. Blended in the right dosage, smoke adds texture, depth and a certain sensuality that feels unisex. At one end of the spectrum, these scents conjure the platonic ideal of a ’50s-era speakeasy: dimly lit, filled with curls of smoke, cracked-leather armchairs and wood-panelled walls. But it can be as subtle as you like, too, lending a softer, more understated warmth.

"For me, the best smoky fragrances create a sense of intimacy and intrigue," agrees Almira Armstrong, founder of perfume brand, Lumira. "Smoke is especially evocative: it can suggest a fire after dark, incense in a quiet room or the warmth of a place you remember. I think that emotional quality is what makes smoky perfumes so appealing in autumn. They feel like something you can step into."

Of course, it can be hard to get this category right. Per Armstrong, the best smoky perfumes consider proportion and contrast. "A small amount of a smoky note can add depth; too much can dominate everything around it. I love giving smoke room to breathe with something bright at the top, such as citrus, then adding softness through rose, musk or vanilla."

1. Le Labo Thé Noir 29

If I want something subtly smoky and sexy that I can wear year-round, I inevitably reach for Le Labo’s Thé Noir 29. It’s an icon for a reason. Peppery and woody, with a hint of spice, its black tea note rounds everything out beautifully, keeping it from ever feeling too intense. I think of it as a smoky skin scent, albeit one with excellent projection and staying power, thanks to its tobacco notes.

2. Celine Nightclubbing

Smoky perfumes can have a reputation for being overbearing and stuffy, but not Celine’s Nightclubbing. It has all the classic elements of the fragrance family, rendered in a much lighter, more wearable way. Spritzing it makes me feel as though I’m wrapped in a gigantic fur coat, on my way to some starry, candlelit evening. There’s warmth and depth from the galbanum and patchouli, offset by an airy effervescence from the nicotine accord and a creamy softness from vanilla. I like to think of it as a grown-up perfume for those of us who still feel like we’re cosplaying at adulthood (myself included).

3. Maison Margiela By The Fireplace

Few things smell more like autumn than a bonfire. If you love the scent of your clothes after an evening spent warming your hands by the flames, Maison Margiela’s By the Fireplace captures it almost literally. It opens with smoky, burning woods, softened by creamy, cosy guaiac wood, cashmeran and clove oil. Notes of chestnut and red berries evoke roasting chestnuts and s’mores, while sumptuous vanilla emerges as the fragrance wears, settling beautifully into the skin.

4. Abel Coat Check

As Armstrong says, the best smoky perfumes are all about balance, and few notes complement them better than saccharine gourmands. Case in point: Abel’s Coatcheck, which has all the sensuality of the fragrance family but becomes a veritable confection thanks to an enveloping, dessert-like cacao note. It’s rich, creamy and seductive, yet remains fresh on the palate thanks to herbaceous blackcurrant and invigorating coffee. This is a smoky scent for people who think they don’t like smoky fragrances.

5. Diptyque's Orpheon

The Who What Wear team has often waxed lyrical about Diptyque’s bestselling Orphéon, but I think it deserves even more praise for being a surprisingly understated take on smoky fragrance. Bottling the buzz of Paris’s Saint-Germain-des-Prés, it pays homage to the legendary Orphéon bar, where creatives gathered over liqueur and curls of pipe smoke. Soft, powdery jasmine meets warm tobacco, leaving behind a nostalgic, musky trail that captures the neighbourhood’s bohemian spirit. It’s a true day-to-night smoky scent, too, equally at home in the office as it is at date-night dinner.

6. Rituals Aeonian Everlasting Oudh

Rituals has always been a staple in my bodycare routine, but I was blown away this year when the brand released Aeonian—a collection of eight unisex fine fragrances, blended by master perfumers. Out of the collection, I immediately fell in love with Everlasting Oudh; an intense smoky concoction that completely belies its £88 price point. Dark Oudh is tempered by coffee and herby raspberry, and it just lasts on the skin all day long; in fact, I’ve often been able to smell this on my clothes days after I’ve initially sprayed it. It’s incredible value.

7. LBTY. Fragrance 1875

If you like smoky fragrances for the atmosphere they evoke, it doesn't get better than LBTY. Fragrances 1875. Created to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the iconic London department store, this smoky floral scent evokes its hallowed wood-panelled walls and the esteemed visitors it has welcomed over the past century and a half. Rich tobacco smoke and syrupy tuberose flowers conjure up peals of laughter and animated debate, before spicy notes and tobacco add a soft grounding energy. It's a real crowdpleaser, despite being one of the more unique smoky scents in my collection.

8. Réservation Parfums Feu de Rose

Smoky notes pair beautifully with gourmand profiles, of course, but they’re also surprisingly good with soft florals like rose, toughening them up a tad. Réservation Parfums’ Feu de Rose is a masterclass in this, evoking a rose garden at dusk. There’s a gorgeous contrast between honeyed cistus absolute and the spice of nutmeg and clove. It’s a genuinely distinctive scent, and one that always gets people asking when I wear it.

9. Chanel Le Lion

Over the past two months, I have been lucky enough to trial New Wave. It has been concealed in a small, unlabelled vial in my handbag, and whenever someone has asked me about my fragrance (which has happened a lot), I couldn't tell them the details. But now, I can.

What Does Merit New Wave Smell Like?

Before we get into the new scent, I feel inclined to lay out something very clearly: New Wave is notably different from Retrospect. If you are expecting something overtly feminine and floral in its profile, you will not find it here. Even I, as a perfume expert, struggle to fully explain the complexity of New Wave—and I've been wearing it almost every day for two months. So, to help me out, I enlisted the help of perfumers Dominique Ropion and Meabh Mc Curtin.

My struggle to define New Wave is, as it turns out, by design. New Wave possesses a complex list of notes, which is rare in the modern day. "We started with Ambre 83, one of the great classical amber structures in perfumery, which provided a rich and complex foundation. A structure like this creates depth, texture and evolution," says Ropion. "Rather than expressing itself in a single direction, the fragrance continually reveals different facets over time. Our role was to preserve that complexity whilst making it feel more luminous and contemporary."

To put it plainly, on first impression, New Wave feels intense: it's deep, it's ambery and it's entirely unique. But don't be fooled: New Wave is not overpowering or headache-inducing. "Amber is such an iconic structure in perfumery that it naturally feels familiar, but our approach was very contemporary. We introduced more brightness, transparency and movement whilst preserving the warmth and depth people associate with amber," says Mc Curtin.

"We wanted an amber that felt alive and forward-thinking, which is why we reimagined the architecture through brighter ingredients and a more contemporary construction. We call it a Neo Golden Amber—a fragrance that balances power, optimism and sensuality for today’s wearer."

And this makes sense as soon as you smell it. The heavy notes (like amber) that exist in New Wave never feel overly powerful or intense. They maintain a cool lightness that sparks intrigue. Take, for example, the leathery note of labdanum that runs throughout. "Labdanum is one of the key materials in a classical amber structure and naturally contributes warmth, richness and depth. The challenge was to preserve those qualities without allowing the fragrance to become too dense, smokey or leathery. That's where balance becomes important," says Ropion.

"The lift from pink pepper and angelica, the radiance of ambroxan and the transparency introduced throughout the composition help create a more luminous effect. The labdanum remains an important part of the architecture, but it is expressed in a way that feels lighter, more fluid and more contemporary."

"The key characteristic is confidence. [The wearer] has a strong sense of self and personal style. She's looking for a fragrance with presence and character, but not something that overwhelms. There's an ease to her confidence. New Wave feels like an extension of who she already is rather than a transformation into someone else," says Mc Curtin.

And that really sums it up: New Wave is a bottle of confidence. It is intense, deep and mysterious, but it's also interest-piquing, approachable and wearable. It is soft enough to comfort and hard enough to straighten you out. It is, in short, the very definition of a 2026 power scent.

Let me start by saying that if you have yet to ever experience a Diptyque candle, it's very important you know that they are, without question, the very best variety of home fragrance. I'm a beauty editor of over a decade; I specialise in all things fragrance; I burn hundreds of candles every year, and I've smelled every single Diptyque candle and Diptyque perfume that exists, so I'd like to think you can take my word for it.

And whilst the design changes were subtle, Diptyque was leading up to a bigger moment, a moment that is now here. This month, we sat down with Emma Corrin. The 30-year-old actor is the face of Miu Miu's latest fragrance, Miutine Intense, a heightened version of the original scent. "It definitely becomes your armour," Emma shared when asked how the new perfume makes them feel. "You put it on before you go out, and people are going to notice when you walk into the room. There’s a real sexiness to it; there’s a rebelliousness to it. It’s really bold; it’s there to be noticed, which is what you want."

Below, Emma talks about go-to makeup products, their best beauty advice and how they use fragrance to channel the characters they play.

1. Which beauty product gives you the biggest mood boost?
Definitely fragrance. I use fragrances multiple times a day to bring me back to life. I think Miutine does that so beautifully; [the brand's] scents are really bold. They last a long time as well, which I feel like is actually quite unusual.

2. You only have one product to use for the rest of your life—what is it? Apart from Miutine, probably retinol. It’s rejuvenation. Shed the skin and start again!

3. What’s the best piece of beauty advice you have ever received?
In the evening, when you’re putting your cream on or whatever you use, don't do it in the bathroom—not under good light. Do it in the dark or under a softer light, because otherwise I feel like I scrutinise everything going on with my skin. There is some terrible hotel lighting out there!

4. Strong lip or a strong eye?
Strong eye!

5. What's your beauty philosophy in a sentence?
Less is more. Don’t overcomplicate it. Your skin is always happier with less.

6. What's your signature fragrance?
On a day-to-day basis, well, it was the original Miutine, which I think is such a good daytime fragrance. It’s got such light, uplifting notes, like strawberry and gardenia. Miutine Intense has a very similar base family of notes: gardenia, brown sugar and vanilla, but it uses blackberry, which is really rich and sensual, and I feel like that moves it a bit day to night. Also, you could do it the other way round. There are no rules here!

7. What's your favourite lipstick colour?
I was always an Elizabeth Arden person—the Eight Hour Cream—but then Laneige came along, and I do love that. Recently, someone used the chocolate [lip balm on me]. … It’s absolutely insane.

8. Candles, reed diffusers or nothing at all?
Candles, so many candles. I use them all the time. I recently went to Japan, and they have beautiful scents there. They have these incense cones, and I bought loads back; I’m burning them everywhere, but they don’t last as long [as candles].

9. Name one beauty product that is always in your handbag.
Miutine! Miutine Intense.

10. Are you team dewy or matte?
Dewy. Matte is coming back, but I am holding onto dewy with my life.

11. Makeup primer: love it or hate it?
I’ve never really used it that much, but ... I watch where people use it; I really get why. I think I use it when I get my makeup done; it just helps it stay.

12. What beauty rule do you always break?
I always leave the house with wet hair. I have this thing in my head that I think air-drying my hair makes it better.

13. Which era of beauty inspires you most?
I like minimalist beauty, which I feel like is very much the era of now. I think there are so many products out there that help you enhance that. You can wear makeup and have the joy of doing makeup and getting yourself ready, but it’s quite minimalist and sort of "no makeup" makeup.

But I was looking back, and I feel like the era of Françoise Hardy, where she did a very light, defined eye and then the skin was really like sun-kissed, a simple lip; I feel like that era—'60s, '70s? There was a lot of stuff going on in the '70s which was quite bold and punk, like a lot of colour, so I feel like in every era maybe there is bolder and more minimalist, and it’s whatever side of that you fall.

14. What do you do in your downtime to relax and reset?
I’ve been watching a lot of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. It’s my guilty pleasure. Walking my dog, seeing my friends, cooking… I like cooking.

15. Do you ever use fragrance to help get into the character you’re playing?
Yes. Not for every character, but some. It really helps because I feel like scent is so tied to memory, and it helps you lock in. Actually, I was doing a lot of stuff for Miutine whilst I was filming Pride and Prejudice, and it occurred to me that Elizabeth Bennet is the original Miu Miu girl. Miu Miu and Miutine always champion the individual and want you to celebrate being yourself, and I feel like Elizabeth Bennet was the original heroine who stood for that.

This is exactly the kind of perfume that I will be generously dousing myself in from now until next spring. A mouthwateringly delicious floral gourmand, Prada Paradoxe is a real sweet treat of a fragrance thanks to that syrupy blackcurrant opening note. The magic lies in the way that it’s quickly balanced out by a supporting cast of florals, though—both orange blossom, which adds an almost honeyed luminosity and a creamy neroli that folds that berry sweetness into something more comforting. The combination lends what could otherwise be quite a saccharine scent to something altogether more polished, grown-up and totally luxurious.

2. Miu Miu Miutine Intense

I have long considered Miu Miu’s original Miutine to be something of a modern power perfume, and pondered including it in this list due to its addictive tart wild strawberry note. However, its new ramped-up iteration feels far more suited to this collection of firmly autumnal forest fruit fragrances due to the almost liqueur-like blackberry note at its heart. This is a power perfume on steroids—bold, decadent, rich, and a beautiful perfume to wear if you like your gourmands and florals with an unexpected edge. Before it all gets a little intense, though, there’s softness from gardenia and vanilla here too, which keeps the whole thing feeling elevated rather than overly dark.

If I close my eyes and imagine a forest fruit perfume, this cottagecore delight from Laura Ashley is what my imagination would conjure. Fully committing to the theme, from the blackberry-printed bow to the juice inside, this perfume has a real outdoorsy quality rather than just smelling fruity. Yes, there are freshly-picked blackberries, raspberries and even the sharpness of gooseberries, but there’s a green earthiness too that’s reminiscent of damp leaves, brambles and morning dew. Think a walk through the woods in a woollen jumper rather than a sanitised punnet of berries from the supermarket.

Admittedly, this isn’t an obvious forest fruit choice, but for me it’s the perfect option for this in-between season that we’re in. Yes, technically, autumn is here, but the balmy temperatures and blue skies outside in the UK mean I’m not entirely ready to dust off my cold weather wardrobe just yet. Sun Soaked has a slightly warming, solar element to it, but the notes themselves read like a walk through an English country garden rather than a trip to Greece. There’s a sweetness from strawberries and blackcurrants, alongside a delicate bouquet of honeysuckle, peonies and roses, so it feels fresh rather than syrupy. I’ll be continuing to wear this while I’m not quite ready to let go of summer.

Cherry had a huge moment last year, but of all the trending scents, it’s this one from Phlur that has remained a staple in my own fragrance collection—particularly as a bit of a date night event. If you find most cherry perfumes a little too sweet, then Cherry Stem is the one I’d put in front of you. Black cherry and orange brandy give it a grown-up, boozy opening, while its intense florals and caramel bring the sweetness. I’m particularly into the contrast here: you get that juicy, almost edible hit of cherry, but then the warm woods and soft leather come through to give it a slightly rebellious edge. Imagine yourself sipping a cherry-spiked whiskey cocktail in a dark bar, and you’re on your way to capturing the spirit of this scent.

Fans of the original Glossier You will know and love it as a classic skin scent, and Rêve contains all of that familiar warm muskiness but with a gourmand twist. There is still an edible element, though, with buttercream adding a vanilla sweetness and toasted almond layering on an edible warmth. 1. Zara Ebony Wood Eau de Parfum

This woody, spicy scent was created by none other than Jo Malone, founder of British fragrance brand Jo Loves. It's no wonder, then, that it's blended so masterfully. In fact, this is a compliment magnet, which completely belies the fact that it's under £40. For me, woods are very autumnal, and this instantly evokes long evenings spent outside a cabin in the forest, while a fire crackles and smoulders. It opens with bright grapefruit, pink pepper and cypress, before coffee adds a smooth, warm depth. Finally, there's a woody trail of earthy vetiver and patchouli, which grounds it beautifully and lingers for hours on end.

2. Zara Rich Warm Addictive Eau de Toilette

While this is part of the brand's tobacco collection, it's more of a smoky gourmand, with a heavy punctuation of boozy rum, which it opens with, and bourbon vanilla, which grounds it. Rich Warm Addictive is actually a great name, because it's exactly that; there's a sweetness thanks to notes of golden honey, coconut and white peony, but it remains intense on the skin. It's seriously cosy, too, conjuring leather armchairs, dimly lit bars and oakwood. I liken it to a grown-up vanilla scent, with a sultry, seductive kick thanks to all the alcohol notes.

3. Zara Sand Desert At Sunset Intense Eau de Parfum

I mentioned that Zara often taps renowned perfumers, and Sand Desert at Sunset Intense is one of the best examples. Master perfumer Benoist Lapouza collaborated with the brand to create a slew of oriental florals, and this is the bestseller. Often compared to Kilian Angel's Share (but at a fraction of the price), it's a warm, spicy amber scent that opens with zesty orange and smoky incense, before moving into a gourmand heart of moreish cinnamon, cocoa and tonka. It then dries down clean, powdery and woody, thanks to iris and cedarwood. It's complex, and again, a real bargain.

4. Zara Amber Affogato Parfum

Affogato was the dessert of the summer, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't make for a gorgeous autumnal scent. This rich, creamy fragrance, created by Spanish perfumer Jordi Fernández, perfectly captures the juxtaposition of bitter coffee beans and vanilla gelato with a kick of dark-roast espresso and a deep, resinous base of amber, which is sensual and enveloping on the skin. I love the trail of coffee beans it leaves behind; it's actually rather revitalising for such a cosy scent, making it surprisingly complex.

5. Zara Dolce Nostalgia Vanilla & Incense Parfum

One of the more unique Zara fragrances I've discovered, Dolce Nostalgia Vanilla & Incense, was also blended by Jo Malone, and no wonder it smells so expensive. It opens on the unconventional note of plum liquor, adding a cloying sweetness that makes it very different from the rest of my autumnal rotation. Then there's a sophisticated yet rugged edge of "cracked leather", which stops the plum from becoming overbearing, before it settles into a creamy, cocooning amber that has lovely projection.

6. Zara Fields at Nightfall Intense Parfum

Despite its "intense" label, this is a far lighter autumnal scent than the others on this list, and that's no bad thing. Especially for daytime, I prefer something more subtle, and the milky, woody notes of jasmine sambac and velvety sandalwood lend this a skin-scent edge that is perfect as we phase into winter. But despite the freshness of coconut water, it retains an overtly cosy profile, thanks to a base note of bourbon vanilla, which rounds it out beautifully. I can never stop sniffing my wrists when I wear this.

7. Zara Hypnotic Vanilla Eau de Parfum

This is not for the faint of heart; if you don't like vanilla, steer clear—but if you even "like" it, you'll adore this. Super sweet, with hints of delectable dulce de leche, this confection is made autumnal thanks to deep, bourbon-infused vanilla and moss. It's my favourite kind of transitional scent, as it's softened considerably with the addition of apricot blossom and jasmine, meaning it's perfect for late September, when there's still a hint of warmth in the air. As with any vanilla-based scent, it's incredibly long-wearing; I can still smell it on my skin long after I first sprayed it.

As a beauty editor and perfume lover, I see many perfume trends come and go. And as the autumn perfume trends begin to emerge amongst the new perfume launches and on my social feeds, an unexpected theme has emerged in the forecast: rain perfumes.

"As Brits, we have a rather particular relationship with rain. We’re used to it shaping so much of the year; we talk about it, plan around it, dress for it, complain about it and, secretly, I think, rather love it," says Sarah Reason, founder of Soliflore. "It’s part of our landscape and, in a way, part of us. Rain is woven into so many of our memories: muddy walks, wet pavements, the sound of rain against the window, coming home and putting the kettle on. It’s familiar, comforting and uniquely British."

Curiously, Google searches for rain perfumes are up 5,000% this week. And after a long summer of heatwaves, it could well be why we're gravitating towards the scent as we welcome in a new season. However, the notes associated with downpours may be speaking to us on a deeper level, allowing us to connect with nature and all its elements. In many ways, rain perfumes allow us to touch grass in a quick spritz.

"Nature has always offered us a sense of escape from the noise of everyday life, and scent is one of the quickest ways to get there; few smells are quite as evocative as rain. The heady smell of rain on earth just after a downpour, the smell of wet leaves and moss in the woods, rain hitting a warm pavement, or that cool, almost metallic freshness in the air just before a storm," says Reason. "Perhaps that’s why rain has become such an interesting theme in fragrance. We’re not necessarily looking for a perfume that smells like standing in a downpour. We’re looking for that feeling, the sense of being surrounded by nature, of taking a deep breath of cool, fresh air, of the world being briefly quiet and washed clean," she says.

What Is the Scent of Rain?

"Rain, or petrichor, isn't actually one smell, but a combination of tiny molecules being released into the air when raindrops hit the ground, akin to a cocktail of whatever’s happening in the air and on the ground around you," explains Reason.

"One of these is geosmin, a compound made by microbes in the soil, responsible for the unmistakable earthy scent we associate with rain. Plants, leaves and fungi add to the mix, which is why rain in a forest can smell woody, green and slightly mushroomy, whereas rain hitting a warm pavement can pick up all sorts of dust, oils and other compounds that have been sitting there, giving it a sharper, more mineral-like smell," she says. "And if you’ve ever noticed that fresh, almost metallic scent before a thunderstorm, that can be down to ozone, which is produced during electrical activity in the atmosphere."

Fragrance is incredibly personal. In fact, out of all the beauty categories, I'd argue that it's the most subjective of them all. Working as a beauty editor for over a decade, I spend a lot of my time testing and talking about perfumes with other fragrance lovers, and there are certain ones that just have that universal appeal. No matter whether you like gourmand perfumes or clean-smelling scents, there are certain popular perfumes that are just total crowd-pleasers no matter your taste in scent.

1. Escentric Molecules Molecule 01

The very first perfume that springs to mind when I think of blind-buy safe perfumes is Escentric Molecules Molecule 01. It features just one fragrance note, which makes it incredibly wearable. But there's something special about Iso E Super. It has a subtle, airy and woody quality akin to fresh laundry, musk or pencil shavings. But what is most special about it is that it creates an aura of scent that I've never experienced with other perfumes, and garners compliments unlike any other. It's a skin scent that is fleeting—you might not actually be able to smell it on yourself all the time—but after a couple of hours, it will become noticeable to your nose again. I love wearing it on its own, but it also makes for a great fragrance primer should you want to layer it with other perfumes. It amplifies other scents beautifully, turning up the volume but in the most minimalistic of ways. There's a reason why fashion and beauty editors consider this their signature perfume. For that reason, I consider it a total foolproof blind-buy perfume.

2. Merit Beauty Retrospect

On days when I don't know what fragrance I want to wear, I will usually reach for this elegant perfume. To me, Merit Retrospect is the perfume equivalent of a gold pair of earrings. It goes with any outfit or occasion, and has a sparkling quality that I cannot get enough of. It opens with a burst of glimmering pear and bergamot before it mellows into a smooth, skin-like scent on your wrists. The mossy base gives this chypre fragrance a golden quality that makes it exude sophistication, and the extrait potency means it lasts for hours on end on the skin.

3. Glossier You

There's a common theme amongst many of these blind-buy safe fragrances. Rather than the perfume smothering the wearer, they instead enhance, making you smell like the very best version of you. And Glossier You fits that bill exactly (Glossier's tagline is that it needs "you" to complete it). This is a creamy, skin-like scent that has incredible projection and lasting power. I often smell this on a colleague in our office and compliment the scent, only for her to tell me she'd sprayed it six hours earlier that day. Its lasting power is notable, and it's a total compliment magnet.

4. Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu

I'd consider nearly all of Chanel's perfumes blind-buy safe, but its newest addition, Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu, absolutely requires your attention. Fronted by Gracie Abrams, this new perfume takes everything that's adored about the original Coco Mademoiselle perfume, but with an amber and lychee twist that I'm just desperate to wear to a bar to drink cocktails. It's sparkling and zesty on the opening, then lingers with a smooth vanilla and earthy patchouli base that I cannot get enough of. If you're gifting a fragrance lover, there will be no buyer's remorse here.

When it comes to classic perfumes, few are more iconic than Miss Dior. This is the fragrance I'd point you in the direction of if you love a floral perfume. The iconic fragrance has recently been reformulated, and I'd say it's even more crowd-pleasing than before. Creamy vanilla and roasted almond sit on a bed of velvety florals, which make it undeniably pretty and easy to wear, drying down into an addictive woody base. In fact, I'd say that many of Dior's perfumes are blind-buy safe, but Miss Dior will always be appreciated by your recipient (even if that's yourself!). It's one of the most-loved and nostalgic perfumes around.

7. Byredo Blanche

Now, I'd usually advise against blind-buying luxury fragrances, especially as it's a bigger risk to invest in a bottle of perfume that you may not like. But if I had to choose one, it would be Byredo Blanche. It's a clean-smelling scent that is unfussy, uncomplicated and unproblematic. And with it being Byredo, it's effortless and luxurious all at once. This is the type of fragrance that lends itself just as well to wear to the office as to Sunday brunch. It's the type of perfume you can spritz on and go, like throwing on a white shirt or T-shirt that just goes with anything in your wardrobe.

8. M&S Apothecary Warmth

Marks & Spencer perfumes are so impressive at the moment. But one I'd consider the safest blind-buy is Apothecary Warmth. This went viral when it first launched for smelling very similar to a certain luxury sandalwood scent, and it was almost impossible to find in stock anywhere. If you like woody scents, then you'll appreciate the simplicity of this perfume, which puts sandalwood front and centre to create a creamy, smooth woody scent with a touch of spiciness. At £12 a bottle, don't expect the most long-lasting perfume, but for the price you won't mind needing to top-up every now and then.

9. Zara Energetically New York

Zara's perfumes are a safe bet for blind-buying. They typically range between £15-£36, so they won't make your bank account cry. But if I were pick one, I'd go for this. Energetically New York is part of Zara's collection created with legendary perfumer, Jo Malone CBE—and each one is as stunning as the next. This one feels like the first day of spring in New York, looking up at the glassy skyscrapers against a bright blue sky. It's fresh and airy, but impossibly cool and easy to wear.

The launch marks a fresh chapter for Tommy Hilfiger fragrance, and we asked the star to share more about her exciting new venture.

1. Which beauty product gives you the biggest mood boost?
I will say fragrance. Before I go to a big event, [I wear] Tommy Hilfiger Freedom. I don’t really wear perfume, so if I’m going out, it makes me feel like, "oooh, this is special."

2. If you could steal someone else’s makeup bag, whose would it be?
I think I’m going to say Dua Lipa!

3. You’ve got a spot. Are you team pop it or team leave it alone?
If it’s yellow, pop it!

4. You only have one product to use for the rest of your life—what is it?
Probably conditioner. I’m really into the Amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask right now.

5. What’s the best piece of beauty advice that you have ever received?
Drink water. It makes such a big difference to everything, which is so annoying because I hate having to go to the bathroom.

6. What's your signature fragrance?
Tommy Hilfiger Freedom, for sure. I love vanilla, so I love that about it. It’s fresh, and it’s not too intense!

7. Strong lip or a strong eye?
A strong eye. I’m definitely a strong-eye girl. I like a smoky eye, but I honestly do it less and less. I’m into a more natural bronzy brown.

8. You’re having your nails done. What’s your go-to colour?
I do a nude with chrome on top.

9. What's your favourite lipstick colour?
I like the Mary Phillips lip liner. I like anything close to my natural lip colour. I love a lip tint. I love the Sacheu one.

10. Candles, reed diffusers or nothing at all?
Candles. I like the Diptyque ones.

11. Name one beauty product that is always in your handbag
Probably a lip liner and the Gisou lip oil. I like to have a little bit of a gloss or an oil.

12. Are you team dewy or matte?
Dewy all the way.

13. The greatest drugstore product for under £10?
Cheap mascara! It's better sometimes.

14. Describe your brows in one word
Healing. The more I don’t do anything to them, the more they’re actually growing. I had spots that weren’t growing. I’m not touching them, and they’re growing in the places they weren’t! I like a more unkempt brow to brush up; I think it gives a youthful, wild look that I like.

15. What beauty rule do you always break?
I’ve realised that trends that look good on other people don’t [always] look good on me, and I think it’s good to be aware of that. I don’t know if that’s a beauty rule that I break, but it’s something that I’ve realised. Just do what works for your face!

16. Which celebrity’s hair would you love to steal?
I would steal Rosalía’s hair because, to my knowledge, she is someone who has gorgeous hair and doesn’t have any extensions, and that’s really rare in our industry.

17. Best beauty hack?
Patrick Ta is a really great friend of mine; I love him so much. I’ve learned a lot from him; I’ve learned about how important it is to really moisturise your face right before you do your makeup.

I'm a beauty editor who has a particular infatuation with candles. With over a decade of experience burning the most expensive luxury candles all the way through to more affordable vessels for my job, I can confidently say that, generally speaking, you do get what you pay for with candles. From the new perfume launches that have arrived on my desk, to the fragrances I've been smelling on my beauty colleagues and the trending fragrance notes that I haven't been able to ignore, one thing is for sure. Autumn Perfume Trends 2026

1. Blackcurrant

It seems that almost every recent new perfume launch features blackcurrant this year, and as we head into autumn, I'm seeing more and more of this fragrance note popping up. It's fruitness makes it a great note to wear as we transition from summer into autumn, and it brings a tart burst of sweetness with a woody and almost creamy facet. Think of a French crème de cassis cocktail, or an autumnal walk through the British countryside.

One of my favourite new autumn perfumes is Byredo Future Memories, which has a juicy blackcurrant accord wrapped in velvety orris butter and creamy vanilla that radiates with a warm, golden and subtly fruity aura. I've been complimented on it every time I wear it. Additionally, I was one of the first to smell this new perfume from Matiere Premiere in Grasse, where perfumer Aurélien Guichard told me he was inspired by the nostalgia of the fruit for Black Currant. Combined with oud, this feels elevated, sophisticated and smouldering on the skin, with earthy patchouli and leather.

2. Touching Grass Scents

After observing the newest fragrance launches, it's hard to ignore how many have drawn inspiration from the elements, and it feels like a welcome invitation to not only head into the great outdoors but also bring that grounding sense of calm to our day-to-day, too—it's time to touch grass.

Take Aesop's new Unforseen Aer, which captures the bracing air that whips atop a mountain with a mineral, fresh yet spicy scent. Like bottled mountain air, this herbaceous scent clears your mind and grounds you with every spritz. Or Jo Malone London's Sea Salt & Bergamot, which quite literally feels like you're at the seaside, with sparkling and invigorating bergamot and salt that are both uplifting and calming at once. This instantly brings to mind crashing waves, sparkling waters and the rhythmic pull of the tide that makes a trip to the coast so calming for the soul and your senses.

3. Iris

Florals? For autumn? Kind of. The scent of the iris flower actually comes from its roots, as opposed to the flower itself, but it's been cropping up in a flurry of new perfumes for autumn. Iris is renowned for being one of the most expensive materials in perfumery, and the powdery scent makes for an elegant autumn fragrance that will undoubtedly make you smell luxurious.

One of the best iris perfume launches of late is Guerlain L’Heure Bleue. Inspired by the shade of blue that fills the sky just as the sun sets and before nightfall arrives, it captures the calmness of a vast sky at blue hour with iris and an ozonic accord that feels like a breath of fresh air. Meanwhile, Creed's new Iris Debonair is a devastatingly elegant scent that combines powdery iris with lavender and smooth, creamy sandalwood.

4. Vanilla 2.0

Whilst vanilla can be divisive if you're not traditionally a fan of gourmand perfumes, this autumn might be the time it changes your mind. Rather than being syrupy sweet and cloying, autumn 2026's take on vanilla is smooth, smouldering and distinctively grown-up.

Bottega Veneta's Ricordami is inspired by Italian gelato and has a vanilla creaminess that is tempered with smouldering rum that makes it less saccharine and more sophisticated. Then we have Phlur's Vanilla Canyon, which takes the smoothness of vanilla and grounds it in oak wood, velvety plum and earthy patchouli that feels like throwing on your favourite brown suede jacket. If you don't already have one, prepare to develop a real sweet tooth for these autumn perfumes.

5. Rain Scents

After months of heatwaves over the summer, I'm not surprised that Google searches for rain perfumes are up over 5,000% right now—it seems almost everyone is craving a refreshing scent to see them into autumn. And right on cue, petrichor-inspired perfumes are on the forecast, with brands launching scents that capture the refreshing, air-cleansing scent that fills the air after a downpour. Uni's new Rain fragrance smells like the scent of a forest after rainfall, with citrus and grounding vetiver, and Loewe's Smoky Rain captures the calmness after the storm with a smoky twist of incense and radiant amber.

Look, I get it. Smelling "rich" is entirely subjective. Some people swear there's nothing fancier than a whiff of jasmine in a perfume, whilst others reach for a smoky cognac-infused bottle when they want to smell sophisticated. It all boils down to your olfactory memories, or the link between a scent and its lavish past. It's the leathery smell of a luxury handbag or the powdery musk of your mother's signature red lipstick. For me? Iris smells wildly expensive. I associate it with a well-loved cashmere sweater, one you'd find draped over the shoulders of a woman who somehow always looks put-together—classic, soft and painfully chic.

When I saw that Guerlain's newest scent (its first women's fragrance launch in almost 10 years, by the way) put the pretty note in the forefront, I knew I'd consider it a rich-smelling staple. Five weeks later, I firmly stand by the assessment. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the fragrance makes you smell like an effortlessly chic French lady. After all, this is Guerlain we're talking about! If you're on the hunt for a new signature scent this season, I'd highly suggest scrolling ahead.

Guerlain L'Heure Bleue, Reviewed

As I mentioned, the perfume calls upon two special types of iris—a butter and a tincture, to be exact. These unique forms express differently on the skin, according to master perfumer Delphine Jelk, Guerlain's director of perfume creation. The proprietary tincture, which took Jelk three years to create, is "more airy, more diffusive, more immediate," she says. "It is a top note. It brings freshness, lightness, and an additional soul that envelops the entire fragrance, whereas iris butter is denser and sits more at the heart of the composition." Both types give the fragrance its noticeably soft, creamy, suede-like aroma without overpowering the senses. "Like an Impressionist painting, the fragrance has a strong presence but never overwhelms," Jelk adds.

While the first spritz may remind you of the petal-soft cheeks of your grandmother, it won't make you smell like powdery makeup. That's because Jelk included a contemporary blend of vanilla and Ambroxan in the composition, which cuts through the tenderness of the iris, marshmallow, and orange blossom. "Their combination is delicious," she notes. "Ambroxan brings a skin-like sensuality, almost salty, which tempers the sweetness of vanilla. Together, they create the effect of warm, sun-kissed skin."

She then spiked it with an ozonic accord powered by a synthetic aquatic molecule called Cascalone, which evokes fresh air. "I wanted to express a contrast between warmth and freshness, between the sensuality of fragrance on skin and the cool air that creates a shiver," she shares. This contrast gives it a touch of mystery that you can't quite put your finger on, which makes it even more alluring. In fact, the very first day I wore it home from the office, my husband immediately asked me if I tried a new fragrance. When I asked him to describe what he liked about it (a beauty editor's version of a pop quiz), he replied, "I can't explain it, but it smells really nice."

Essentially, the result is meant to transport you to a breezy twilight evening, when your skin clings to the day's warmth yet the air around you feels unmistakably crisp. Jelk describes it as "that precise moment when day is gone and night has not yet arrived—a moment of transition." This time of the year is a collective moment of transition. Summer hasn't totally disappeared from the rearview, yet the earthy colour palettes and sumptuous fabrics of autumn have already dominated the zeitgeist. L'Heure Bleue is the perfect scent to mark that shift, as it's not overwhelmingly summery (read: bright) or densely autumn-coded. "It is this contrast—between warmth and freshness, between intimacy and air—that makes it so right for that moment at the end of summer, when one season gently slips into another," Jelk agrees.
