This is the OG of sheer foundations, and for good reason. The lightweight formula feels undetectable on the skin, and whilst a small amount offers a sheer, naturally radiant finish, the coverage is buildable, so you can create a slightly heavier base if desired. I love wearing this when I want to smooth and even out my skin, without feeling like I'm actually wearing a lot of makeup. My only complaint? I wish the bottle came with a pump, as I find it can be quite messy to apply.

2. Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops With TFC8

I know, I know, this Victoria Beckham Beauty foundation is so expensive. But I wouldn't recommend it if it wasn't one of the best lightweight, sheer formulas on the market. It takes a skincare-first approach, powered by Augustinus Bader’s TFC8, but it's the finish that I can't get enough of. The product glides on like butter, creating this "your skin but better" effect that has everyone asking me what my current makeup routine is. I will say, a little goes a surprisingly long way, and if I apply too much, it can sometimes settle into dry skin or fine lines, so start with a small amount for the best results.

3. No7 Pro Artist Weightless Silk Sheer Foundation

I was really impressed when testing this No7 foundation. It has a lightweight, almost serum-like texture that melts into the skin, creating a beautiful, natural, second-skin finish. It definitely helps even out your skin tone; however, if you have any blemishes that you want to cover, you might want to go in with a concealer, too. It's packed with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and vitamin E, so there are lots of added skincare benefits, but for me, the best thing about it is how quick and easy it is to apply. If you like a "no makeup" makeup look, you will love this.

4. Merit The Minimalist

If you prefer a foundation stick, this one from Merit is one of the best natural-looking options I've tried. It somehow seamlessly blends a lightweight, sheer finish with impressive coverage, essentially replacing both foundation and concealer in your makeup bag. You can either apply it to areas where you want more coverage, or all over for a blurring effect. My complexion can't get enough, but if you do have very dry skin, you might want to prep with a hydrating moisturiser or primer.

5. Chanel Les Beiges Water-Fresh Complexion Touch

I really, really love this complexion product from Chanel. So much so that I've worn it every single day since getting my hands on it. The unique, gel-like formula is actually made up of around 60% water, which means it hydrates the skin whilst creating the most gorgeous, glowy finish. Micro-droplet pigments burst onto the skin for impressive coverage, whilst remaining incredibly lightweight. Similar to the Victoria Beckham Beauty foundation, a little goes a long way. In fact, just one or two pumps gives an even, illuminated finish that has everyone commenting on how good my skin looks.

6. Dior Forever Skin Glow

I know it seems a bit counterintuitive to say that a sheer foundation has good coverage, but what I love about this formula is that a light layer gives a gorgeously glowy, sheer finish, but when you build it up, you can achieve a little more coverage if desired. It's a great middle ground packed with skin-loving ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides. Fair play, Dior, fair play.

7. Estée Lauder Double Wear Sheer Long-Wear Foundation

It seems strange to have the words "Estée Lauder Double Wear" and "sheer" in the same sentence, but here we are. Whilst the original Double Wear formula is incredibly high coverage, this sheer iteration is ideal if you prefer a lightweight, second-skin base. It's so sheer that when I wear it, I feel like I'm wearing nothing at all. It doesn't cover blemishes, but it does even out your skin tone and add a natural radiance to your complexion, which both get big ticks from me.

8. Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint

I know this is technically a skin tint, but it's so impressive that it felt wrong not to include it in this roundup. Lightweight? Yes. Skin-loving ingredients? Yes. A blurring effect? Yes. Lisa Eldridge MBE is one of the world's top makeup artists who has worked with just about every famous face you could name, so I never doubted that this formula wouldn't be anything short of exceptional. Eldridge is renowned for her natural-looking approach to the complexion, preferring to place foundation and complexion products only in the places they're really needed rather than masking the skin. And she has totally bottled this ethos in this skin tint.

Inside the pebble-shaped bottle is a tint with a water-like consistency, which immediately sinks into the skin, offering a sheer, lightweight finish that's akin to a second skin and does so without highlighting enlarged pores or fine lines.

The formula contains hydrating ingredients such as squalane, glycerin and prickly pear and sunflower seed oils. As someone with oily-leaning skin, I was initially worried it would be too heavy on my skin, but it sits beautifully. I love a naturally radiant finish, and this skin tint delivers just that. It's neither too dewy nor too matte, but just looks like skin that has a healthy glow. This would be perfect for those with dry or combination skin, but is still matte enough for those with oilier skin who favour a more glowy finish.

The Finish

What I love about this skin tint is that it offers the perfect amount of coverage without feeling like you're wearing anything at all. It blurs redness and pigmentation, yet it still lets my freckles peek through. Of course, the sheer finish won't offer enough coverage to hide inflamed acne or redness, but it's perfect for day-to-day makeup when you want to even your skin, and it makes a great base to then apply a little concealer in just the places that require it. It's the ultimate "no makeup" makeup skin tint.

It wears so well throughout the day, whether worn alone on top of SPF, or finished with concealer and powder. The finish isn't so dewy that it disappears, yet not too matte that it clings to any dryness. I'm prone to oiliness around my nose and chin, yet this holds up throughout the day and never turns oily or cakey—a little powder on top sets it perfectly.

The shade range is expansive, covering a range of undertones across different shades so that you can find a good match for your skin tone. I'm writing this review in the height of summer, where I have a bit more of a tan at the moment, and shade T7 has been a great match for my complexion, which has neutral undertones. In short, I'll never be without a bottle of this skin tint in my makeup bag.

What Should You Look for in a Buildable Foundation?

The key to finding a truly buildable foundation comes down to the formula. A good buildable base should allow you to gradually increase coverage where you need it, without becoming heavy, cakey or obvious on the skin. Celebrity makeup artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis explains that it's “the right formula, texture and amount that allows the makeup to be layered and build up coverage while still looking like skin”. She adds that it should contain “long-lasting ingredients that don’t separate but can stay in its true form” even after multiple layers are applied.

For this reason, lightweight textures tend to work best. Nguyen-Grealis recommends “thin, serum or satin and lightweight formulations” because “they melt instead of sitting on the skin.” These types of foundations are much easier to customise depending on your needs that day, whether you want a sheer wash of coverage or something more perfected for a special occasion.

Buildable foundations are particularly useful if your skin isn’t completely uniform, but you don’t want a full-coverage finish across your entire face. As Nguyen-Grealis explains, they’re ideal for skin that “needs variation of extra coverage especially for acne or pigmentation,” as they allow you to add more product only where it’s needed. What Is the Best Way to Build Foundation?

When it comes to building foundation, the application technique is just as important as the formula itself. Nguyen-Grealis recommends starting with properly prepped skin, explaining: “I like to ensure skin is prepped fully with a well-cleaned, moisturised base, primed for a smooth base before application.” This creates a smoother canvas and helps the foundation sit evenly throughout the day.

She suggests thinking of your first layer “as a tinted moisturiser first,” using a foundation or stippling brush to apply a light, even finish across the skin. From there, you can assess where you need more coverage and go back in with a firmer foundation brush to build up specific areas. “Stipple or dab using blenders also helps with building more control,” she adds, as pressing the product into the skin rather than sweeping it around helps maintain that natural, skin-like finish.

The foundation itself also makes a difference. We all love a multitasking beauty product, don't we? Whether it's a lip-and-cheek stain, a colour-correcting moisturiser or a hardworking multi-stick, products that streamline your routine while saving time and money are always welcome. But what about foundation with sunscreen? Can one product really do the job of both?

I put the question to my go-to dermatologist, Dr Anjali Mahto, founder of Self London, who delivered a reality check. "Foundation with added UV filters absolutely does not replace your dedicated, broad-spectrum sunscreen," she explains, adding that the reason is simple: people rarely apply makeup thickly or evenly enough to achieve the level of protection stated on the bottle.

The good news? Dr Mahto reveals that the added sun protection in foundation does still offer meaningful benefits, particularly for ageing skin. "The iron oxides often found in tinted makeup help block the visible light that can exacerbate stubborn pigmentation." Just remember that foundation with SPF should be viewed as a useful secondary layer of defence rather than your primary shield.

That said, today's formulas are more sophisticated than ever. Alongside broad-spectrum UV protection, many new-gen foundations now contain hydrating ingredients, antioxidants and skin-perfecting pigments that help create a smoother, healthier-looking complexion.

Alternatively, you can use a translucent sunscreen powder or gently dab a lightweight sunscreen fluid over your skin, being careful to press rather than drag."

How I Tested

Part skincare, part makeup, this is infused with raspberry leaf extract and prebiotics to deliver lasting hydration, while black grape pomace helps blur the appearance of uneven texture and white rose extract nourishes the skin. The lightweight, flexible formula sits beautifully on the skin, and I loved how it resisted the tendency to settle into fine lines. It really helped to give my skin a healthy glow.

7. Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Huez Tinted Moisturiser Broad Spectrum Mineral SPF 30 Sunscreen

This was brilliant at dialling up my glow. The pigment blend helps to tone down dullness and redness while still letting your natural radiance shine through. The shade range is strong, with a thoughtful focus on undertones. The coverage is lightweight and more sheer than buildable, but it really delivers when it comes to luminosity and a healthy-looking finish.

Will Using SPF in Foundation Increase My Overall Protection? 

While it might sound logical, Dr Mahto says you cannot mathematically stack UV filters. "Wearing a factor 30 foundation over a factor 30 sunscreen will only ever provide a maximum of factor 30 protection." However, she adds that layering them is still highly recommended. "The makeup helps catch any areas you may have missed and somewhat compensates for the common habit of under-applying primary sunscreen," she adds.

Can You Wear Sunscreen and Foundation Together? 

"Absolutely," says Dr Mahto. Simply apply your sunscreen as the final step of your skincare routine, allow it a minute or two to fully absorb and form a film, and then apply your foundation smoothly over the top.

Is SPF in Foundation Good for Ageing Skin? 

The added sun protection in foundation is certainly beneficial for ageing skin, Dr Mahto reveals. "The iron oxides often found in tinted makeup help block the visible light that can exacerbate stubborn pigmentation. However, it should only ever be viewed as a helpful secondary layer of defence, rather than your primary anti-ageing shield," she reveals.

1. Dcypher My Custom Drops

If there’s one formula I found myself coming back to again and again throughout the testing process, it’s this one. I don’t always want full coverage, but when I want more impact without sacrificing that dewy, skin-first finish, this is what I use. I first wore this on a long day where I needed my makeup to last through until an evening event, and it held up impressively whilst still looking fresh. What I like most is that I can build it up in specific areas without it ever looking thick or cakey overall.

5. Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops

This is my go-to when I want just a subtle evening out of the skin. It feels almost like skincare on application, which makes it incredibly easy to apply in the morning without overthinking it. On me, these Westman Atelier drops give a really healthy, hydrated finish that still lets freckles and natural texture come through. I often wear this on days when I want to look like I’m wearing nothing at all.

6. Sweed Glass Skin Foundation

This is pure glow in a bottle. Every time I wear it I find myself noticing that my skin looked almost lit from within, but in a way that doesn't look forced. This is such a fun, easy product to use, especially when I want that dewy finish without thinking too much about it. It's incredibly minimal coverage, so I typically apply it on no-makeup-makeup days, and it just gives a quick hit of glow and evenness. It feels accessible and unfussy, but still delivers a really pretty skin finish that punches above its price point.

I love that this feels like it’s doing something for my skin while I wear it. On days when my complexion is feeling a bit tired or uneven, I reach for this knowing it won’t just sit on top but actually blend in. I find it gives a really smooth, hydrated finish that makes my complexion look more rested overall.

Fenty Beauty really set the standard here, and this has been one of my favourite base products for years. It’s a product I recommend constantly because it removes so much of the usual guesswork when it comes to picking a shade (there are so many options!). The finish is soft, blurred and wearable, making it a reliable everyday base that just works.

How to Apply Foundation Drops

When it comes to applying foundation drops, the beauty really lies in their flexibility. There’s no rigid rulebook or overly technical technique required, which is part of what makes them so appealing for everyday use. As White Turle explains, "You can apply these however you feel most comfortable, really. I do like a buffing brush, which gives a nice sheer finish, but they work just as well using your fingertips."

A brush will typically give you that soft-focus, lightly blurred effect, whilst fingertips tend to melt the product into the skin for a more lived-in, natural look. Either way, the result remains beautifully sheer and believable. White Turle also recommends a simple, intuitive placement technique. "Start in the middle of your face and work outwards, building up where you need more coverage." This approach allows you to keep the centre of the face slightly more perfected whilst maintaining transparency around the edges, ensuring the overall finish never feels heavy or overdone.

How We Tested

To compile this edit, I tested each formula over several days. I applied products using both fingers and buffing brushes to assess finish, blendability and versatility, with particular attention to how they layered and wore throughout the day. I evaluated coverage build, glow factor, texture on the skin, and whether each formula maintained that "second-skin" effect over time without separating or settling. Last year, I wrote a review of the Jones Road Just Enough Tinted Moisturiser. If you've read it, then you'll know that I'm a big fan of this product. In fact, I ditched foundation altogether in favour of this "skin filter in a bottle". So, when an email landed in my inbox a few weeks ago, telling me that Jones Road had a new base product coming out in the form of a lightweight foundation stick, I made it my mission to get my hands on a sample straight away. The Formula

Does anyone else find foundation sticks quite drying? As much as I love the format, whenever I've tested them in the past, they've always clung to dry patches of skin. So, when I tested this foundation on the back of my hand, I practically squealed with excitement. It's hard to put into words how creamy it feels, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

The formula is infused with ceramides, squalane, sodium hyaluronate and shea butter, so you can already imagine how hydrating it is. As a beauty editor, I love a skincare makeup hybrid. That being said, as someone with combination skin, I was a little skeptical about how oily it could get throughout the day, or whether these hydrating ingredients could actually feel quite heavy, but this formula is surprisingly lightweight. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that it feels like wearing nothing at all.

The Application

Thanks to its velvety formula, this foundation glides on like butter (not that I've ever applied butter to my skin, but you get the gist). One swipe, and suddenly, blemishes, redness and pores take on a blurred effect, creating an even, radiant base that makes me feel like my most confident self. Whether you prefer a foundation brush or your fingers, swipe the stick onto the skin and blend as you go.

My Verdict

Is it obvious yet that I've fallen in love with another Jones Road base product? This little stick has quickly replaced all of my tinted moisturisers, skin tints and foundations, and I can't see myself reaching for anything else this season. The creamy formula, the ease of application, the naturally radiant finish, the wide range of shades and undertones (I wear shade Beige, btw)...I have no notes. As someone who is here, there and everywhere this summer, this launch couldn't have come at a more perfect time. I recommend adding this foundation stick to your makeup bag ASAP.

Let's be honest, it's never easy to find a good foundation match, especially if you're buying it online. And even if you're able to swatch in store on the beauty counter, it's not always easy to find an exact match from the shades available to you.

So, when I discovered Dcypher, a brand that provides custom-mixed foundations not too long ago, my interest was immediately piqued. Whilst I already have foundation, skin tint and BB cream formulas that I adore, the shades can often lean too warm, too cool or just not work for my complexion in the change of seasons.

So, having a custom-matched formula mixed for both my skin tone, skin type and the coverage plus the finish I require? It sounded too good to be true, and, to be honest, I was dubious that I would like the formula (I'm incredibly fussy, and like a natural-looking foundation, or a glowy foundation formula). Dcypher Custom Mixed Foundation

How it Works

You start your custom match by selecting your coverage, and you can choose between sheer, medium and full coverage finishes depending on how much you like. Then, you can choose the finish from matte, natural or radiant, and choose your skin type so that Dcypher can blend the perfect formula for your complexion.

Next is where Dcypher analyses your skin tone. Using your phone or laptop camera, it will take a snapshot of your complexion to measure your skin's depth, vibrancy and undertone. These will all shape the pigments mixed into the custom shade, and you'll be given a unique shade ID code, so that you can reorder the exact shade again if you wish. Then, your custom-blended foundation will be sent to you. Dcypher also offers a concealer, foundation drops and a glowy skin booster, all of which can be made in your shade too.

The Formula

For my foundation, I went for a sheer coverage paired with a radiant finish. I have combination skin, but I like my complexion products to be lightweight and subtly radiant. Upon trying the foundation for the first time, I was blown away by the colour match. It basically disappeared into my skin. The liquid texture isn't heavy whatsoever, and it melts in like a second skin with a subtly radiant finish.

Even with choosing the sheer finish, I was surprised at the amount of coverage it still gave me, so keep that in mind if you prefer something very light, such as a skin tint (the Dcypher Custom Glow Booster might be more up your street if you favour a lighter and glowier finish).

No matter what formula you have, each foundation has the same core ingredients to hydrate, including hyaluronic acid and glycerin, as well as caesalpinia spinosa fruit and kappaphycus alvarezii extracts.

The Application

As you can see, my foundation blends seamlessly into my skin. I've found that having an exact shade match means I often use less (one pump of foundation is plenty for my entire face), meaning it sits better on my skin, and there's no need to worry about blending it down your neck. It sinks in totally seamlessly.

A word of warning, however. I find the pump on my bottle too powerful. It needs quite a bit of force to push down, which, the first time I used it, fired it all over my carpet. So take caution! Packaging malfunctions aside, I really can't fault the foundation. Plus, if you need to switch up your shades for summer or winter, you can rescan your skin again and have another match to see you through seasonal complexion changes.

My Verdict

I'm so impressed with the shade match. After years of never finding one that was quite right, there is something very reassuring knowing that this foundation is completely bespoke to my skin. I love the formula so much more than I thought I would. It's lightweight, and even the sheer finish offers generous coverage over my rosacea and acne scarring. The radiant finish is beautiful, a satiny finish that's not too dewy, but just lends my skin a healthy glow.

Sure, it might not be as cheap as drugstore foundations, but it's not quite as expensive as the luxury foundations out there, and for the custom-blended formula, I think the price point is very fair for what you're getting. And given how little of the product you actually need to cover your skin, I can imagine a bottle of this foundation lasting a long time. I now reach for this foundation almost every day, that's how much I love it. I will never be without a bottle in my makeup bag.

Not only that, but brands such as Armani and Estée Lauder have reimagined some of their most popular foundation formulas, making them even better than before. I've been busy testing these new-gen foundations and have rounded up my favourites below, from glowy foundations to matte options, too.

What Are New-Gen Foundations?

As mentioned, new-gen foundations feature advanced formulas that contain added skincare benefits alongside natural-looking finishes and wider shade ranges. Although new launches are constantly coming out, some brands are reformulating iconic foundation formulas, such as Amarni Luminous Silk.

1. Clarins Double Serum Foundation

I have to start with the new Clarins Double Serum Foundation. The iconic Double Serum has been a mainstay in my skincare routine for as long as I can remember, but when I heard that the brand was launching a foundation version, I was a little confused. I immediately imagined a greasy, oily finish that would slip and slide all day, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

This serum formulation glides onto the skin effortlessly, offering a naturally luminous finish that makes my complexion look so healthy and glowy. Although my skin is dry, I can get quite oily throughout the day, but I found I only had to reapply powder once or twice when wearing this, which is no more than usual. As you can see from the bottle, the unique technology dispenses the perfect amount of both foundation and serum onto the back of your hand, and thanks to the medium-to-full coverage, a little goes a long way. I love that I'm getting both hydrating skincare ingredients (hello, hyaluronic acid and peptides) and a luminous foundation in one, and the next-generation formula has made getting ready so much quicker, as I don't feel the need to apply hundreds of different hydrating serums before applying my foundation in the morning.

2. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

If you've read my review of the original Luminous Silk Foundation, you'll know it's one of my favourite products for a slightly more full-coverage finish that still looks natural and radiant. I honestly didn't think it could get much better, but then I tried the brand-new formula and was blown away by the results.

As explained to me by the brand, the new foundation contains skincare ingredients such as glycerin and niacinamide to improve your complexion over time and add more luminosity. Not only that, but the shade range has been extended, and there are now 44 shades on offer. In my opinion, this new formulation feels incredibly lightweight and hydrating, and gives my skin a fresh, glowy look that, while subtle, has been earning me so many compliments.

3. Dior Forever Skin Glow

Dior has launched not one, but two next-generation foundations that are giving my skincare products a run for their money. Forever Skin Glow and Forever Skin Wear are the ultimate makeup and skincare hybrids. While Forever Skin Wear offers a natural matte finish, Forever Skin Glow is my personal favourite thanks to the luminous finish.

Infused with a "triple action complex" of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides, this foundation has all the ingredients I would look for in a top-of-the-range facial serum, combined with medium coverage and a radiant effect. I would personally say the coverage is light but buildable, but I love the second-skin finish it gives. It's the ultimate "your skin but better" product for spring and summer.

4. Estée Lauder Double Wear

If I'm being really honest, I've never been a huge fan of the original Double Wear foundation. Don't get me wrong, the coverage is amazing, but it always felt a little heavy on my skin. However, this new formula has won me over.

A buildable, breathable iteration of the popular foundation, with 60 shades now available, I can't see anyone not liking this. It feels so much more lightweight compared to the original but still delivers medium to full coverage for those days when you want a more seamless makeup look. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid hydrate the complexion, so although it still has a natural matte finish, it doesn't feel drying whatsoever. The only thing I could possibly fault is that the bottle doesn't come with a pump, but apart from that, it's perfect.

5. Hermès Plein Air Luminous Matte Skincare Foundation

I know this foundation is eye-wateringly expensive, but I wouldn't be including it in this roundup if I didn't think it truly deserved to be here. While the words "matte foundation" aren't usually words I gravitate towards (we all know I love a glowy finish by now), matte formulas have come a long, long way in recent months, and this Hermès foundation is a prime example.

I wouldn't say it's a true matte finish, but more of a natural, soft matte effect that still lets some luminosity through. Packed with active skincare ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and white mulberry, it feels incredibly hydrating on the skin and wears comfortably throughout the day. When I first used it, I was surprised by how watery the formula was. Finding a foundation for fair skin has never been straightforward for me. As someone with naturally pale skin and a distinctly yellow undertone, many of my formative years were spent navigating formulas that skew too pink, too chalky or missed the mark entirely. Truly, landing on the best foundation or skin tint for me felt like it was going to evade me for life.

That said, the beauty landscape has changed dramatically since my younger self was struggling. In recent years, brands have spent a lot of time and money on expanding their shade ranges across the board—from foundations for dark skin (although there is still a lot of work to be done here) to the very lightest tones—bringing nuance and undertone accuracy to categories that once felt limited. The result? There are now some genuinely excellent foundation options for pale skin that deliver on finish, longevity and tone.

How to Find a Foundation for Pale Skin

Much like finding your perfect pair of jeans, there tends to be a lot of trial and error when it comes to finding a great foundation—but it is possible. "The biggest mistake I see is people choosing a shade that is either too dark or too warm because they are trying to avoid looking washed out," says makeup artist Katie Daisy. And whilst the shade itself is undeniably important, Daisy also points out that very pale skin can show texture more easily, so the formula that you choose is just as crucial. "Foundations that are too matte or heavy can look flat or cakey rather than skin-like," she continues.

Thankfully, there are some brands that the pros consider go-tos if you’re in a shopping rush. "In my kit, I always gravitate towards brands that genuinely cater to fair skin rather than offering one token light shade," explains Daisy. She rates Shiseido, Nars, Armani and Dior as offering some of the best foundations for pale skin on the market, so they make great starting points.

How to Choose the Best Shade

Daisy recommends working out your undertone to really help you select the best foundation for your skin tone, but explains that undertones can be incredibly subtle with paler complexions. "It’s not always as simple as warm versus cool; you need to look at a few indicators together," she says. "If you burn easily in the sun and rarely tan, then you’re often cool or neutral, whereas if you burn but eventually get a slight tan, you might lean neutral or move olive."

There is truth in the jewellery trick too—if you suit silver, then you might be more cool or pink-toned, whereas if you suit gold, then you might be more warm or yellow. "For very pale clients, I often find neutral or softly pink undertones are more common than people realise, though, and going too yellow can make the complexion look dull," Daisy explains.

"I've always found it tricky to find a good foundation match, particularly in the winter months when my skin is at its palest with cool undertones, and the foundations I'd call upon in the summer are far too warm for me to use," says Who What Wear UK beauty editor, Eleanor Vousden. "I recently tried Dcypher's Foundation, which is custom-mixed to match your skin tone exactly, and I was so impressed. You just have to take a couple of photos, and your exact shade will be mixed into a bespoke foundation. From there, you can tailor the coverage and finish to suit your skin type. "I have pale skin with warm undertones, so it can sometimes be hard to find a very fair foundation that doesn’t either lean too pink-toned or turn orange. For day to day, I tend to stick to BB creams, but when I want more coverage, I reach for the Haus Labs foundation," says freelance beauty editor and aesthetician Grace Day.

There are so many brilliant go-to brands for complexion products that I recommend for fellow pale people: Haus Labs, Bobbi Brown, Danessa Myricks, E.l.f... the list goes on, but for a big event when I want heavier-duty and longer-lasting coverage, Sculpted by Aimee Satin Silk has been a favourite for years," she says.

"I always rate Fenty for their shade range (there are 50 tones to choose from), but although it does totally nail the match for my fair, yellow-undertoned complexion, it's the finish that keeps me continually reaching for this foundation. "I have been wearing this iconic foundation for well over 10 years, and it was one of the very first formulas that I felt really matched my fair skin tone on the high street. I remain consistently impressed at how well this foundation delivers at its price point, and its reformulation a couple of years ago to include hyaluronic acid means that drier skin types will particularly love this," says Ricketts.

"It has a smooth, dewy finish that makes my complexion look hydrated rather than washed out, and it can be worn sheer or built up to an almost full coverage. Plus, the shade range and mix of undertones really do rival some of its more expensive counterparts—in fact, it sometimes surpasses them."

When people find out I'm a beauty editor, they automatically assume I style my hair and wear a full face of makeup every day. In reality, that couldn't be further from the truth. I'm constantly surrounded by new beauty products (I mean that quite literally—you should see my work setup!), and I have to test hundreds of them per year. Here it is—Makeup by Mario's SurrealSkin Foundation. It feels weightless on the skin, offers medium coverage and sets to a natural-looking finish. When I say "natural," I mean it. This foundation has a second-skin effect. It doesn't look too matte or too dewy. It's the perfect in-between.

It's moisturising and oil-controlling, so it keeps the skin smooth, even, and balanced all day. It's also sweat- and humidity-resistant, so you don't have to worry about it slipping, smudging or sliding off your skin at any point. The best part, though, is its softening, blurring effect. Pores? I can't find them. Fine lines? Not here. It's all thanks to micro-powders, which are suspended in the formula and self-set on the skin.

How to Choose Natural-Looking Makeup Products:

Choosing natural-looking makeup starts with understanding your own skin and letting that guide every decision. Coverage should be flexible, not fixed—look for sheer-to-light formulas that can be built only where you need them, rather than products that mask the entire face. Anything described as “skin-like,” “second skin,” or “blurring” is usually a good place to start, especially if it comes in cream or tint form.

Shade selection matters more than you might think. With blusher, bronzer, and highlighter, opt for tones that already exist in your face—whether that be soft pinks, muted peaches, or gentle browns—and choose subtle sheen finishes rather than full-on sparkle.

Texture is just as important as colour. Natural makeup should melt, blend, and move with your skin. If a product dries too quickly, feels tight, or sits on top of pores, it will always look like makeup. Creams, liquids, and finely milled powders tend to be the most forgiving, especially when applied with fingers or a soft brush.

As a beauty editor who loves "no makeup" makeup, I have a bone to pick with some skin tints and tinted SPFs. While I favour the lightweight and sheer coverage compared to foundation, I've noticed that it's often incredibly hard to find a good colour match. Some brands appear to shirk responsibility by claiming that their shades are "stretchable" due to their sheerness. And while I agree with them to a point, I can name the number of products that actually accurately match my skin tone seamlessly on one hand.

I've previously tried a couple of Dcypher's makeup products, where the brand creates a custom-mixed foundation or concealer to perfectly match your skin tone. So when the Custom Glow Drops (£29) launched recently, I was instantly intrigued to see how well they'd match my skin tone and how well the formula would perform. After trying them out for the past month, I've included my honest thoughts below.

The Shade Match

If you're not already acquainted with Dcypher, then you'll be pleased to know the shade-matching process is so easy. On Dcypher's website, you'll be invited to take a makeup-free selfie in natural light. It takes quite literally seconds, during which it will scan your complexion and tell you your exact custom shade. This Skin Tone ID can then be used across Dcypher's products, should you want to try anything else, or re-order a top-up.

Because I had already tried the foundation and the concealer, I already had a Skin Tone ID, which was used to order the Custom Glow Booster. I was really impressed with the shade-match again, and it really blended into my skin to an almost undetectable effect. It looks like my skin, but with a better, dewy glow.

The Formula

The formula itself is lightweight, offering sheer coverage with a radiant, dewy finish. Because it's very sheer, it delivers a hint of coverage to even out the skin tone on its own. However, for blemishes or areas of redness, it might not be enough on its own to fully conceal them (you might want to try the Dcypher concealer for more targeted coverage). This month, my rosacea flared, and I had a smattering of hormonal breakouts, but it did a good job of evening my skin tone, while still letting my freckles on my nose peak through. It's perfect for those days when you don't want to wear a lot of makeup, but it can also be mixed in with your foundation for a more glowy finish, making it really versatile.

The Verdict

Having now used this over the past month, I'm really impressed with it. Because it matches my skin tone so well, it looks almost invisible on the skin, and the lightweight texture makes you feel like you're not wearing anything either. Of course, this might not be for you if you want more coverage like a traditional foundation, or favour a matte finish (this has a pearly glow), but for days when you want a perfecting veil, then I couldn't recommend it enough.

My t-zone is excessively oily (by the time it gets to 2 P.M., blotting paper becomes my new best friend), and my cheeks can be excessively dry, especially in winter. When I was asked to test the Burberry Beyond Wear Perfecting Matte Foundation for this year's Next in Beauty awards, my hopes were rather low. But, trust me when I say that I was pleasantly surprised. A silky, satin consistency, this formula glides onto the face with ease, creating a buttery smooth skin-like finish. Its medium to full buildable coverage allows you to have a more everyday or more glam look based on your preference. And, crazily, it seems to smooth out to an even base over every section of my skin, with the oily parts not breaking out, and the dry sections still feeling hydrated after a full day of wear."

Editorial assistant, Brittany Davy says, "An SPF is my non-negotiable in my everyday routine, and although I’d never swap out my factor 50+ formula with a foundation, it’s never a bad idea to double up and get even more coverage in a foundation with SPF to protect my skin. Gucci’s Éternité De Beauté Foundation contains factor 15 sun protection and a full-coverage finish. As someone with dry skin, seeing a foundation described as “luminous-matte” would usually get an automatic no from me. But this formula provides my skin with a satin finish without causing patchiness and flakiness. If you have dry skin like me, my recommendation would be to make sure your skin is moisturised to make sure it lasts all day. I love how extensive the shade range is, as well as how many different undertones are catered to. The only thing I’d be wary of is that a little goes a long 3ay. If you add too much product, ot can become difficult to blend out and create an even base."

SEO writer, Ava Gilchrist says, "Despite paying a pretty penny for what's technically considered a skin tint", the Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion is hands down the only base product she'll ever use. "I was a die-hard Kosås Tinted Face Oil girl, but when the product became defunct, I was recommended the Westman Atelier one as a worthy alternative. Boy, how I have never looked back," she adds.

"The product itself is high coverage and blends into your skin beautifully, evening out tone and enhancing your skin's natural glow with only a few drops. You can really make very little product stretch quite a long way, as I'm someone who really doesn't enjoy wearing layers of makeup on my skin for prolonged periods of time. Beauty editor, Eleanor Vousden, says, "I've never been a fan of foundation sticks. Past versions have always been thick, heavy and matte. On the contrary, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful bases are those that still allow our natural skin to show through—these can even be tinted moisturisers. No matter your preference for type or finish, however, what a great base should offer is a little added polish, camouflaging imperfections, evening out your skin tone and making every day look (and feel) like a great skin day.

So, when I saw a new wave of foundations hitting the shelves, foundations which promised all of the above and came in a range of finishes to suit all foundation tastes, you better believe my beauty editor senses started tingling. Dubbed blurring foundations, these formulas promise not only to camouflage and conceal with a natural-looking, second-skin finish but also to leave the skin looking like it's in soft focus, too.

Of course, I ran out and got my hands on one at the first opportunity (Laura Mercier's Real Flawless Foundation, in case you were wondering), to put it to the test. The results? My usual dewy skin tints have been dismissed, and I now find myself reaching for some variation of a blurring foundation every day.

So, what exactly are blurring foundations, and what makes them so elite when it comes to finish and formulas? To find that out, I turned to an expert, international education and events manager at Laura Mercier, Karl Díaz-Hellín Hodson.

“Blurring foundations and tinted moisturisers create a natural, radiant complexion that looks effortlessly refined,” he told me. “With soft, buildable coverage, they don’t mask your skin; they enhance it. The result is a breathable, comfortably smooth and subtly luminous finish that looks like your skin, only better.”

I’m sure you’re beginning to see why blurring foundations have since become my go-to base of choice; however, if you need more convincing, I asked Díaz-Hellín Hodson to dive a little deeper…

What Is a Blurring Foundation?

“Blurring foundations are designed to soften the appearance of fine lines, pores and uneven texture by diffusing light across the face,” explains Díaz-Hellín Hodson.

So, what’s the difference between a blurring foundation and a matte foundation? “Both blurring and matte foundations are designed to perfect the complexion, but they achieve this in different ways,” he tells me. “Blurring foundations and tinted moisturisers create a luminous, skin-like finish by softly reflecting light. Matte foundations, on the other hand, are formulated to absorb excess oil and control shine, leaving a velvety finish that’s especially suited to oily or combination skin.”

Who Is a Blurring Foundation Best Suited For?

“Blurring foundations and tinted moisturisers are suitable for a wide range of skin types and concerns,” Díaz-Hellín Hodson told me. “They’re especially good foundations for mature skin, as their soft-focus effect helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without settling into them. For those with textured or uneven skin, these formulas work to minimise the look of pores and smooth rough patches, creating a softly blurred, more even complexion. Plus, thanks to hydrating properties, blurring foundations are also ideal for normal to dry skin types, delivering a radiant glow with lightweight, comfortable coverage that lasts throughout the day.” The takeaway? Few won’t benefit from switching their traditional foundation for a blurring finish instead.

How to Apply a Blurring Foundation

“For the best results, start by prepping your skin with a hydrating primer,” Díaz-Hellín Hodson advises. “This enhances the smoothing effect. When it comes to application, the tool you choose makes a difference. For a softer, sheer finish, use a fluffy foundation brush or don’t be afraid to use your fingertips to apply. For more coverage and control, opt for a dense brush and apply in thin, buildable layers, focusing on areas that need extra blurring, like around the nose or cheeks. Lastly, to set the look without diminishing its glow, set your makeup with a translucent loose setting powder where needed, such as the T-zone.”

1. Kylie Cosmetics Skin Tint Blurring Elixir

One of the first lightweight blurring foundations that I got my hands on, Kylie Cosmetics Blurring Elixir, is still one of my favourites. The finish is light yet buildable, something that I look for in a foundation, and it doesn’t feel heavy or thick on the skin. Alongside the natural-looking pigment, the formula also contains hyaluronic acid, which works to hydrate as it covers. This not only makes this skin tint feel incredibly comfortable to wear but also ensures it applies smoothly and easily without clinging to any dry patches or leaving unwanted streaks. The finish is matte yet not masking—think skin that looks softly diffused and radiant.

2. Chanel Ultra Le Teint Velvet

Chanel’s blurring foundation may be at the more expensive end of the spectrum, but wow, it’s worth every penny. While many foundations claim a velvet-like finish, this is one of the only formulas I’ve tried that truly delivers on that claim. Smooth to apply and transforming into a blurred soft-matte finish on the skin, this is blurring foundation at its best. Blemishes appear less prominent, fine lines are camouflaged and skin looks calmed and even. My only wish is that there were more shades available, especially at the darker end of the spectrum, for even more accessibility.

3. Nars Soft Matte Complete Foundation

Now, I know I said blurring and matte foundations had different properties, but in my opinion, Nar’s Soft Matte foundation bridges the gap between the two. For that reason, it’s a great choice for oily skin types or those who want a full-matte finish while also wanting to achieve an airbrushed effect. As well as leaving skin shine-free for up to 16 hours (something I can vouch for, as I often wear this during long days in the office), it also softly blurs and camouflages as it covers. While the finish is described as full coverage, I’d actually describe this as medium to full, as it can be sheered out or built up, as you desire. Personally, I love this foundation layered over an illuminating primer for a little added radiance.

4. Laura Mercier Real Flawless Foundation

If you spend any time online or on social media, especially in the beauty sphere, I can guarantee you’ll have heard of Laura Mercier’s Real Flawless Foundation. The blurring formula went viral in early 2024, famed for its ability to leave skin with a filter-like finish in real life. In action, it does just that, blending and concealing seamlessly for a seriously seamless look. My only word of warning: build up light layers rather than going in heavy on first swipe to keep things looking natural.

5. Iconic London Super Smoother Blurring Skin Tint

Another lightweight option, Iconic’s Blurring Skin Tint offers a little more coverage than Kylie Cosmetics' base, yet still sits firmly in the skin tint family. For me, this is the perfect everyday foundation: lightweight, natural-looking, yet offering a "my skin, but better" finish. Once again, the shade range sadly needs some increasing; however, on all other fronts, this is a winner.

6. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation

Blending skincare and makeup in one, Charlotte Tilbury’s newly reformulated airbrush foundation is a full coverage, blurring foundation perfected. The formula is infused with powder particles, which blur and prevent shine, while Charlotte’s phyto youth technology also works to target visible signs of ageing. It’s also designed to move with your skin, so it won’t go cakey throughout the day or settle into any fine lines that may become more prominent. And the finish? Airbrushed doesn’t even begin to describe it.

7. Rimmel London Kind & Free Mattifying Skin Tint

Priced at under £10, Rimmel’s blurring foundation is one of the best affordable options available if you’re looking for an entry point into blurring formulas. Available in 20 shades, which span from porcelain to espresso, the lightweight skin tint softly evens out skin texture and tone with a natural-looking matte finish. Plus, it’s also infused with vitamin E to hydrate and soothing botanicals to calm and soothe, so you can rest assured this isn’t just camouflaging your skin but working to improve it, too.

8. Benefit The Porefessional Smoothing + Blurring Matte Foundation

If you’ve ever shopped for a pore-minimising primer, you’ll have most likely come across Benefit’s Porefessional. The velvet-smooth primer became the go-to for oily-skinned girls like myself in the 00s, leaving skin blurred and prepped to perfection, ready for any makeup that followed. This year, the brand created the perfect second step in that routine, the Porefessional foundation, a smoothing and blurring formula which draws upon the properties of their primer alongside a medium, buildable pigment. On the skin, it blends easily, working to camouflage but not cover, while niacinamide works below the surface to further smooth skin over time. Will your pores disappear instantly? No, but will they look smoother and less prominent after use? Most definitely.

9. Anastasia Beverly Hills Impeccable Blurring Second Skin Matte Foundation

Lastly, we have Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Blurring Second Skin Foundation. A great option for oily skin types, it’s a medium-to-full coverage, which blurs pores and imperfections while also minimising shine. Throughout the day, it wears beautifully on my skin, becoming slightly more radiant with minimal slipping or sliding. In comparison, however, I have heard that on dry skin, it can settle a little into fine lines that arise throughout the day, so keep this in mind to ensure it’ll work for you.

In preparation for writing this article, it was important to me to ensure I’d put every foundation included well and truly through its paces. Whether it was a formula I’d used and loved for years, or a new launch I’d recently added to my makeup collection, I revisited them all, comparing each one to ensure it could be named one of the best blurring foundations. I sometimes feel like working as a beauty editor is like slipping on an alter ego post-school run. The truth is, with two young children, the luxury of sitting down to apply a full face of makeup, uninterrupted, is long gone. And I know I’m not alone in that. Almost everyone I know in every walk of life has been embracing a more simplistic approach to beauty in recent years. Yet here’s the truth of it for me: while an easier easier makeup routine has been inspired by necessity, I can’t say that I ever feel truly polished when I step out the door with natural skin. You see, as someone who deals consistently with acne breakouts, when my skin is really acting up, I crave the finish that a full foundation once gave me. But there is a solution. What Is a Foundcealer?

“Whether you are strapped for time or just want to simplify your routine, finding a concealer that doubles as a base can be a game changer,” explains celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier. Simply put, a foundcealer is effectively a multitasking concealer that can be used for selected coverage exactly where you need it, rather than covering every inch of your face with foundation. For me, that’s on blemishes and dark circles, while for you, it might be areas of redness or hyperpigmentation.

And even better, it’s still incredibly fast to apply and actually cuts down the contents of your makeup bag by meaning you can ditch your foundation entirely.

I personally put all of the foundcealers on this list to the test, judging them on their coverage (in my case, concealing a pretty hefty stress-related breakout and dark circles from a run of broken sleep), how comfortable they are on the skin, their versatility on different areas of the face and their range of skin tones. How To Use a Foundcealer

As someone who has very little skill in the makeup application department, I was slightly concerned that a foundcealer may require too much precision for me. However, they are delightfully easy to use. “In most cases, you’ll want to just apply a little to the under eye area, plus a dot on the cheeks, chin and forehead,” explains Grier. “You can then spread it out quickly using your fingers or a soft concealer brush.” If you do have areas like spots or rosacea then Grier suggests taking a moment to “spot check” the skin. “Just apply a small amount to blemishes, redness or pigmentation to create the same effect as a foundation would, but with a quicker turnaround as you’re using less product.”

What to Look for In a Foundcealer

The most important thing when choosing a foundcealer is getting the right shade, as you’ll need a tone that works on various areas of the skin and many of us naturally have fluctuations in tone and colour on our face. “Test the colour by applying it to the under eyes to see how it fares on dark circles before blending it out into the cheeks,” advises Grier. “It should complement the skin like a sheer foundation would.”

Next, it’s the texture to consider. “It needs to blend well and not feel dry,” says Grier. It’s also important to note that if you are used to wearing a more classic medium to full base then you will want to seek out a foundcealer with a little more pigment to make sure that you get that coverage. “Especially if you have rosacea, acne or sun damage, you’ll want something that genuinely conceals,” explains Grier.

The Formula

Powered by Augustinus Bader’s TFC8® technology, this foundation focuses on rejuvenating the skin and supporting the complexion's natural renewal process. In fact, it's the first all-over complexion product that features TFC8®, so it really is a skincare-first formulation.

It has an incredibly lightweight, serum-like feel that melts into the skin like butter, and is easily buildable depending on your desired finish. Adding a hit of hydration and natural luminosity to the complexion, the pigments work to diffuse imperfections while allowing your natural skin texture to shine through. This is probably the best product I have ever tried for that "your skin, but better" effect. As described by Beckham herself, it's a foundation that feels like nothing, yet somehow does everything.

The Shades

There are currently 19 flexible shades on offer. While it's not the biggest shade range on the market, the product does cater to a wide range of skin tones and undertones, and has been designed to complement the brand's concealer. That being said, more shades in the future would definitely be a plus.

I personally opted for shade 5, a lighter hue with neutral warm undertones. I found that this worked perfectly with my skin tone and gave me that second-skin finish I was after.

The Packaging

I wouldn't normally comment on a foundation's packaging, but I felt that this product deserved a special shoutout. Housed in a chic black bottle with Augustinus Bader's signature blue shade adorning the lid, this is definitely the most fashionable foundation I have tried.

Plus, the streamlined dispenser allows you to apply the foundation drops onto the back of your hand or straight onto the skin for a mess-free finish.

The Results

I'm sure it's obvious by now, but I am a huge fan of this foundation. I have combination skin and often struggle to find a formula that is hydrating enough without being overly shiny. In my opinion, this product strikes the perfect balance between natural luminosity and a nourishing finish.

Another element that really stood out to me when testing this product is how it managed to create a subtle blurring effect while making it feel as if I was wearing nothing on my skin. Usually, when I try skincare makeup hybrids, I find that they either lean too much into the skincare category and don't offer much coverage, or they lean too much into the makeup category and don't actually feel as if they are benefiting my complexion. Once again, this foundation found that perfect middle ground, making my skin look and feel good all at the same time.

While I personally couldn't find any faults with this foundation, one thing I do have to mention is the price. At £104 for 30ml, this product is not cheap. You could argue that the high price point is to be expected due to the luxury names behind the formulation, but it's certainly not the sort of product I would buy on a whim. There are more affordable foundations on the market, but if you're looking for a high-end addition to your makeup bag that truly delivers on all of its promises, I recommend adding this to the top of your wishlist.

When Bella Hadid shares a sneak peek inside her makeup bag, you best believe I'm trying out every product she recommends, especially when it comes to foundation. One look at the star's Instagram and you'll see that her skin is practically glowing. I've been dying to know what she uses to achieve this radiant finish. As it turns out, it's not a foundation at all. It's actually a tinted moisturiser from none other than Clinique.

In a recent TikTok video, Bella filmed herself getting ready in the car and could be seen using the Clinique Moisture Surge Sheertint Hydrator. "What I just found recently, which I love, is this from Clinique. It's a really good tinted moisturiser," she says in the clip. After applying the product with her hands, she says, "I don't even wear foundation over this. We look like we just went to the beach!"

Like any good beauty editor, I decided to try out the product myself to see if it would live up to the hype. As it turns out, it's just as good as Bella claims. Check out my full review below...

The Formula

Clinique is known and loved for its skincare products, so it's no surprise that this tinted moisturiser has a whole heap of skincare benefits. Designed with both dry and oily skin types in mind, the oil-free formula is packed with hyaluronic acid and activated aloe water, helping to keep the skin looking plump and naturally dewy for up to 12 hours of wear. Thanks to the formula, I also think this product would be an ideal tinted moisturiser for mature skin.

It's a great option for summer as it's both sweat and humidity-resistant. Plus, the natural-looking finish is the perfect mix between matte and glowy, adding a sheer hint of colour to enhance your complexion.

The Shades

I would love to give this product a 10/10, as the formula itself is so impressive, but sadly, the shades do let it down slightly. There are five shades on offer, ranging from Very Light to Medium Deep, and each option contains Mimetic-Shade™ technology to blend flawlessly with a range of skin tones. While the shade Very Light worked well for my skin tone, it would be great to see a wider range of shades in the future, and it would also be great to see a larger selection of shades for deep skin tones.

The Application

Although Bella applies the product with her hands, I decided to use a foundation brush to apply the tinted moisturiser to my skin. While some skin tints can look slightly cakey on me, this blended in like an absolute dream. In fact, I would say that this feels more like a luxurious moisturiser with a very slight hint of colour, compared to other base products I have tried, where the skincare elements can feel like an afterthought.

I have to say, I am impressed with this product. I thought it would be like all other tinted moisturisers I have tried, but straight after applying it, I could tell that this formula had been designed with skincare in mind. Not only that, but it's one of the only tinted moisturisers I have tried that gives a more naturally dewy-looking finish. As someone with both dry and oily skin, I often have to opt for hydrating base products that can leave me looking a little more radiant than I would like, but this gives me that healthy-looking, lit-from-within glow that makes it look as if my diet consists of lemon water and green juice (when in reality it's more like diet coke and coffee). Bella, if you're reading, I owe you big time for this recommendation. And Clinique, if you're also reading, please diversify the shade offering.

How to Prep Textured Skin for Foundation

Even for those who don't have visibly textured skin, it's crucial to take care of your skin before you apply any makeup. National makeup artist at Sephora UK, Athina Ioannidou, agrees. "Prepping the skin provides maximum benefits for makeup application and affects the performance of the makeup. It helps makeup settle and glide evenly onto the skin and prolongs its longevity." Ioannidou recommends starting with a cleanser to remove impurities as well as the top layer of dead skin cells before going in with a toner to "retain the moisture and help soften and refine the skin's texture before the makeup application", finishing off with moisturiser to prevent dry patches.

Makeup artist and founder of Sculpted by Aimee, Aimee Connolly places a similar emphasis on the importance of prepping the skin. "As a makeup artist, I can't stress the importance of skin prep enough! Think of your skin as a canvas; you need a smooth, hydrated base before you begin," she says. "The goal is to create a smooth, hydrated base for your foundation to seamlessly blend into. Hydration is absolutely non-negotiable. If your skin is on the drier side, layering a hyaluronic acid serum underneath your moisturiser can make a world of difference. A well-hydrated complexion will not only look better under makeup, but it will also prevent your foundation from clinging to dry patches or accentuating any texture."

How to Apply Foundation on Textured Skin

Application also plays an important role in getting a smooth, satin-like finish from your foundation. Ioannidou says, "Apply foundation in tiny layers, building up coverage only where necessary to prevent giving off a cakey appearance. Use patting motions on the product as opposed to rubbing or buffing. For the best application, I'd use an almost flat, dense brush, however, sponges can be a good option too, so long as you make sure that you thoroughly deep-clean them."

I'm not a big fan of foundation. Before you ask, yes, I've already tried some of the best formulas out there. Okay, first things first, let's talk formulas. I don't know what Armani has put in this bottle, but this formula is magic. It feels incredibly lightweight on the skin (I forget that I'm wearing makeup every time I use it), yet it offers buildable coverage and a blurring effect on the skin thanks to exclusive Micro-fil™ technology.

What I love about it is that the formula is great for all skin types. As someone with combination skin (I have a very oily T-zone but also dry patches on my cheeks and chin), I wasn't sure if this would work for me, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The hydrating foundation is infused with glycerin so it glides onto dry areas, but the fact that it's oil-free means that it doesn't feel greasy or turn shiny throughout the day (making it a great wedding-day makeup product, by the way).

The Application

As the name suggests, this foundation glides onto the skin like silk. I find I don't even need to use a primer, as this makes everything look so smooth.

There are lots of different ways to apply your foundation, but I like using a brush to apply this particular one. As mentioned above, it has buildable coverage, so I go in with a light layer at first and then focus on the areas that need a little bit more help, like my chin or forehead.

How It Wears

Those of you with oily and dry skin will know how hard it is to find a foundation that wears well throughout the day. I'm that person who always has powder and a concealer to hand to help top up my base makeup, especially if I'm going out after work. However, this foundation boasts impressive lasting powers that make evenings spent in the office toilet, topping up my makeup, a thing of the past.

If there is one person I pay a great deal of attention to when it comes to their beauty routine, it's Hailey Bieber. Aside from her effortless "no makeup" makeup, her glossy hair and her brilliant beauty brand Rhode, Hailey really knows a great beauty product when she sees one. So, when I spotted her mixing her Rhode Glazing Milk (£32) with a mystery foundation on TikTok, I knew I had to track down what it was and try out this duo for myself. Because if it's in Hailey Bieber's makeup routine, I need to be in on it too.

The secret? Dior's Forever Skin Perfect Foundation Stick (£48). After applying her skincare, Hailey swipes this foundation onto the back of her hand before applying a couple of drops of her Glazing Milk to sheer out the foundation and add a dewy glow. She then mixes them with a large fluffy brush before buffing the combo into her skin. The result? Dewy, buttery skin that I want to imitate. The Formula

Dior's foundation comes in a buttery, creamy stick formula that just melts into the skin. It contains iris extract—a signature ingredient in much of Dior's makeup—that aids with hydration, alongside candelilla and sunflower seed waxes that make the foundation so creamy and melty.

The stick can be used as a foundation all over the skin, or as a concealer to spot-treat certain areas if you want something more targeted. I'd describe it as a medium-coverage foundation that can be built up to full coverage where it's needed.

As for the finish, it has a blurring effect that glides over fine lines and pores, leaving skin looking naturally matte with just a hint of dewiness. For reference, I chose the shade 2N, a light shade with neutral undertones, which matched my skin tone well.

The Application

When it comes to applying this foundation, it's as every bit as luxurious as you'd expect. This foundation stick just melts into the skin. You can apply the stick directly onto the skin and blend for more coverage, but, like Hailey, I personally favour applying a little to the back of my hand first and using a fluffy foundation brush to pick up some of the product. This way, you can gradually build coverage in light layers if you want a more natural-looking foundation result.

Inspired by Hailey, I tried mixing it with a couple of drops of the Rhode Glazing Milk with the foundation too, and was amazed by the glow it left me. It sheers out the foundation slightly and adds a dewy finish, so it's a great way to change up the look of the Dior foundation on days when you want more radiance.

What's great about this foundation is that it works just as well blended with the warmth of your fingertips with a fluffy makeup brush. It blends out so effortlessly and really becomes one with your skin.

How It Wears

As someone with an oily T-zone who still likes a dewy glow to my skin, I appreciate that this foundation stick delivers a naturally matte finish that doesn't look flat or chalky on the skin. It has just a hint of dewiness that makes my skin look glowing, not greasy. All I needed was a touch of powder. It held up well throughout the day, but I did notice it looking slightly cakey around the oily areas of my skin. That being said, it was easy enough to remedy by buffing a little product onto the area with my foundation brush, and it looked freshly applied again.

I will say that if you have dry skin, then you'll want to ensure you've thoroughly exfoliated and used a hydrating moisturiser, as I found it can cling to dry patches slightly. But if you have normal, combination or oily skin, then I think you'll really like this foundation stick.

On the days I wear it, I find I need a small top-up in the afternoon around my nose and areas of redness, but this is easy enough to do with the stick formula, which is so convenient to just throw in your bag without the risk of it causing a foundation explosion. The oval shape of this foundation stick makes it easy to swipe on and blend, and you can use the rounded edges of the stick for more precision if you want to conceal smaller areas.

The Verdict

This really is unlike most foundation sticks I've tried. While many get a bad rap for being heavy, full coverage and drying, Dior's proves that a foundation stick can offer natural coverage while bestowing skin with a subtle glow. In fact, it might be one of the best foundations I've tried lately. My skin has never looked so buttery soft.

I like that you can tailor the coverage for a subtle veil of colour or build up for a more flawless finish. I'm totally sold on Hailey's technique of pairing the foundation stick with the glazing milk, which truly took the glow to the next level. While expensive, a little goes a long way, so I think the price is justified for such a great formula. I see why Hailey Bieber has given it her stamp of approval.

I think the following statement goes for most of us on the Who What Wear UK team, but I really don't like wearing foundation. The thing is, I find most foundations are too heavy and just don't sit well on my combination skin. It separates on the oily areas in my T-zone and then clings to the dryness and creases elsewhere. Instead, I much prefer a skin tint that gives a sheer hint of coverage that then allows me to go in with a concealer on targeted areas for a more natural-looking finish.

However, after seeing Korean brand TirTir all over my TikTok For You Page with its Mask Fit Red Cushion Foundation (£25), I'm letting my no-foundation rule slip (just this once) to see if it's truly worthy of its virality. After all, Korean makeup formulas are considered elite, so I had high expectations. Scroll ahead for my honest review of the TirTir cushion foundation below.

The Formula

Cushion foundations tend to have a more lightweight consistency than traditional foundation formulas. They're a great choice if you're a bit of a foundation-phobe like me and don't like anything that feels too heavy on the skin. This formula has a serum-like consistency that feels virtually weightless. The product is nestled in a sponge base, which you can apply by pressing in the puff applicator and tapping it onto your skin. It's also infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid and brightening niacinamide.

Typically, cushion foundations have very limited shade ranges—but not this stuff. There are 40 shades to choose from, which is quite a large number for a Korean skincare brand, which tend to generally cater more so to lighter skin tones rather than dark complexions. Although 40 is impressive, I would still like to see more shades on the deeper side of the brand's shade spectrum. Speaking of shades, I found it a little tricky to choose one for my skin tone, so I took the brand's online test and was matched with 23N Sand. I'll admit, it's a little too warm-toned for me right now as we head into spring, but during the summer months it will be more of an exact match, I'm sure.

The Finish

As for the finish, this strikes the perfect balance between radiant and matte—I'm obsessed with it. It leaves my skin with a healthy glow, but it doesn't feel greasy. The semi-matte finish makes it long-wearing on the oily areas of my skin, but, it's not so matte that it exacerbates dryness or settles into fine lines either. I find that a lot of foundations highlight my enlarged pores and acne scarring, but, my some magic this one glides over my skin, making it look buttery smooth—so much so, friends and colleagues even noticed. I also favour a glowing foundation finish but want something that doesn't slip and slide around my T-zone, and this ticks both boxes simultaneously. All I need is a light touch of powder on my forehead, nose and chin, and I'm good to go.

The formula is very adaptable depending if you're wanting a sheer finish or more of a full-coverage look. The foundation is so lightweight yet very pigmented, so you only need a light touch to get a flawless-looking result. The first time I used it I actually used way too much because I wasn't prepared for how much it would deliver. So, go easy and start with a light hand and less product on the applicator to start with.

The Verdict

Having now used the TirTir cushion foundation for over a month, I've really put this foundation through its paces. I've put it on at 6am and it still looked freshly applied by 9pm. It claims to last 72 hours, and while I would never wear foundation for that long anyway, I can still attest to it's long-wearing formula. It makes my skin look fresh and radiant—but never greasy—all day long.

It was also originally designed to be transfer-proof when worn underneath a mask. I was sceptical, but I can vouch for its budge-proof qualities too. You'll always get some transfer with whatever foundation your have on your skin (especially, if like me, you're prone to touching your face a lot throughout the day) but the transfer is really minimal when I wear a sheer veil of this. I'm naturally more oily in my T-zone, but this stands up well throughout the day if I apply some powder on top.

Not only has the formula impressed me, but I've also received a lot of compliments on how "glowy" my skin looks. Not my makeup, but my skin specifically. I rarely get compliments on my skin but somehow TirTir is fooling friends and colleagues into thinking I have buttery smooth skin. I also love the compact (which includes a space for your applicator, as well as a mirror) which is useful to carry on me in case I do want to a touch-up throughout the day.

My only niggle would be the shade ranges. While there is lots of choice for fair, light and medium skin tones, it would be great to see some more variations in the deep shades so more people can enjoy this foundation. Consider me officially converted thanks to TirTir.

I haven't touched setting powder in months and it's been years since I even considered applying a matte foundation. I don't think it's just me—it's a sign of the times. Whether you have dry skin or oily skin (or something in-between), a glowing finish has been every beauty enthusiast’s goal for a while now. From K-beauty-inspired "glass skin" to its latest iteration "butter skin", our fascination with the pursuit for a radiant complexion shows no sign of disappearing any time soon.

As someone with a typically oily skin type and acne-prone complexion, true 'glass skin' can sometimes feel a bit jarring. After all, I spent most of my teens attempting to remove any hint of shine from my face—which is why the slightly dialled-down 'butter skin' trend appeals to me. "Unlike the ultra-dewy glass skin trend, butter skin has a more natural, satin-like finish - hydrated and glowing but never overly shiny," says Anna Payne, Chanel makeup artist. “The butter skin makeup trend is all about achieving a smooth, creamy, and radiant complexion that looks as soft and even as butter."

For me, 'butter skin' starts with the hard work of my skincare routine, my toner, serum, and moisturiser. But sometimes I need that extra help to amp up the glow and ensure it lasts all day long, which is where hydrating makeup products come into play—products that deliver pigment but with a healthy dose of dew and sheen. Glow is no longer an optional add-on, delivered via the quick swipe of a highlighter stick, it's the expectation—and everything from your foundation and blusher to your bronzer and lipstick will provide it.

What's more, hydrating makeup products will actually deliver benefits to your skin. "Hydrating makeup products boost moisture, leaving skin smooth, plump, and naturally radiant. They provide a dewy finish and prevent dryness," explains Payne. "They're excellent for dry, dehydrated, and mature skin as they provide moisture, prevent flakiness, and create a smooth, plump dewy appearance, but they also work well for normal and combination skin, especially in colder months or when a dewy finish is desired."

To make hydrating makeup last all day while keeping skin glowing, Payne recommends starting with a lightweight moisturiser. "Apply makeup in thin layers using a makeup sponge for a seamless finish," she adds. As for powder, she advises using a light translucent one only where needed in order to prevent excess shine while still maintaining radiance.

What ingredients should you look out for in hydrating makeup products?

You're probably already aware of the names of ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and squalane, which you'll have spotted on the packaging of your favourite hydrating serums and moisturisers. Alongside other key hydrating ingredients like ceramides, polyglutamic acid, and vitamin E, you'll find the same ones included with the formula of hydrating makeup products. This means your makeup is working overtime to hydrate and nourish your skin throughout the day.

Base Makeup:

If you've ever noticed your makeup looking flaky or peeling throughout the day, this is a sign that your skin is on the dry side or may be dehydrated. Essentially, your skin is attempting to absorb the moisture from your makeup. How to Reduce the Look of Pores

Step 1: Skin Prep

Both makeup artists say skin prep is essential when trying to disguise enlarged pores. "The best way to disguise enlarged pores, in my opinion, is to focus on proper skin prep by cleansing, exfoliating, moisturising, using a pore-minimising primer, and considering mattifying products," Seropian says.

Guerra agrees, saying each skin-prep step you do will get you closer to a smooth, seamless base. "Start by thoroughly cleansing the face to remove any dirt, oil, and makeup," Guerra says. "Choose a gentle cleanser based on your skin type. Look for products that are non-comedogenic. Some are made with ingredients specifically formulated for pore refinement." From there, he recommends exfoliating since "regular exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and improve the overall texture of the skin."

A pore-minimising toner can help too. "After cleansing and exfoliating, using a toner can also refine your pores," Guerra says. "Toners can help balance the skin's pH, remove any remaining impurities, and tighten the pores. Look for toners with ingredients like witch hazel or tea tree oil, [which are] known for their astringent properties."

SPF is the last step. "Sun damage can worsen the appearance of enlarged pores, so it's crucial to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 or higher," Guerra says. "Sunscreen helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays and prevents premature aging, which can contribute to pore enlargement."

Step 2: Primer

"For clients with large pores, scars, or other indented skin textures, I use primers that create a smoothing effect," Guerra says. "Since primers are designed to create a smooth and even surface for makeup application, they can help fill in fine lines and pores—giving the skin a more refined texture. A pore-minimising primer can help blur the appearance of pores and create a smoother makeup application."

Guerra says to avoid any primers that provide a sheen to the skin (and definitely avoid any that contain shimmer or sparkle), as these can actually make pores more visible. "I choose primers that contain ingredients like silica, which help mattify and blur texture on the skin," he says. "It helps to absorb excess oil, minimise shine, and create a soft-focus effect that instantly reduces the visibility of pores. It really (temporarily) creates an optical illusion of blurred, pore-less skin!"

You also need to know how to apply primer. "To make pores 'disappear' on the skin, the technique is just as important as the products used," Guerra says. "Using a dense, synthetic-fiber foundation brush, apply the primer in a circular motion—gently buffing the product onto the skin and into the pores."

Step 3: Makeup Applicaton

A common mistake is applying too much foundation in the hopes of concealing pores better. Guerra says this can backfire, so you should use a light touch instead. "Less is more when concealing large pores. Powder foundations can mix with sebum on the skin's surface and lead to oily creasing or separation, which makes the look of large pores much worse. Liquid foundations with too much coverage can also enhance the visibility of larger pores. I can't be the only on who finds that their skin is a little lacklustre in January. Not only do we have the chilly elements to contend with while making our skincare swaps for winter, but, coupled with the aftermath of the festive season (the only five a day I got was from a cheeseboard) my skin is sure showing it.

So, when I heard that Hourglass was launching the Illusion Luminous Glow Foundation (£58), I couldn't wait to try it. And since wearing it, I've been inundated with "you look so glowy" compliments both from friends in real life and colleagues on Zoom calls. It's safe to say it's helping me fool everyone into thinking I've just had a facial (or been on a secret holiday) and it stays true to it's illusion namesake. Want to find out more? Hourglass Illusion Luminous Glow Foundation

The Formula

Having religiously used the Hourglass Veil Hydrating Skin Tint (£49) (it's my go-to everyday skin tint) I would say that the new Illusion Luminous Glow Foundation (£58) offers more coverage and has a more cushiony consistency on the skin. In comparison, the Veil Hydrating Skin Tint is lighter and sheerer, but this one offers medium coverage with the option of building to a fuller—yet still undetectable—finish.

It's really hydrating thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid, making it a good option if you find your skin getting particularly dry or dehydrated during the winter months too. It glides over dryness and gives my skin a plumped appearance, helping to blur fine lines in the process. The addition of SPF 30 is a bonus. I'd still recommend using a dedicated SPF underneath for sufficient protection, however, it's a nice bonus as another line of defence against UV damage.

It's silky soft on the skin, and although radiant it's not sticky and doesn't transfer or crease like some dewier foundations can. As someone with combination skin I found it still sits well on my slightly slicker T-zone with a touch of powder.

My Verdict

For reference, I was matched to shade 6, a light shade with neutral undertones. It is the same shade I wear in the Veil Hydrating Skin Tint and the shades are consistent across both. There are 26 shades in the range, from very deep to very fair, offering cool, warm and neutral undertones throughout.

I love the medium coverage, which gives a luminous result while still letting the freckles on my nose peek through. However, I like that it can also achieve more coverage on the days I need a little more.

I'm someone who likes a radiant finish, and this delivers on its luminous promise. However, it's not overly dewy and sits well on my sometimes oily skin—I just apply a touch of the Airbrush Pressed Powder (£57) on my nose, chin and forehead to fix it into place. If you have very oily skin, or just prefer a matte finish, this might not be for you.

Like all of Hourglass's products, the finish is beautiful and you can tell this is a high quality foundation. Except this doesn't feel like a foundation, but rather a second skin. It effortlessly buffs into the skin (I like to use the Ambient Soft Glow Foundation Brush (£51) to blend it into the skin) and doesn't settle into fine lines or highlight dryness. In short, it's become my go-to to give my lacklustre skin an effortless glow this month—and it's easily one of Hourglass's best products.

My mum and I share many things—amongst them a love for cosy knitwear, Chanel fragrances, and expensive handbags. But one thing we've never really been in sync with (until recently) is our approach to skincare.

I grew up with acne, so my skin has always been something I've been conscious of and focussed on—an interest which became a passion and eventually led me into a career in beauty. My mum, on the other hand, has had flawless skin for her whole life, never experiencing as much as a breakout or dry patch. Despite having a beauty editor for a daughter—and therefore access to a never-ending supply of brilliant skincare products, she's never really been interested in doing anything more than the necessities, cleansing and moisturising. And to be honest, she hasn't needed to.

Earlier this year however, I noticed her looking through my shelf of serums. She's never really been bothered by signs of mature skin, but has recently begun to notice a few sun spots appearing on her cheeks and some fine lines around her eyes had started to bother her. Naturally, I relished the opportunity to shop my stash and build my mum a skincare routine, incorporating everything from exfoliation and hydration to skin brightening serums—oh, and I also passed on a few makeup products, too.

Now I by no means believe that "anti-ageing" products are a necessity—to be honest, I'm not even a fan of using that phrase. However, as someone who has lived most of their live dealing with acne and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, I totally understand the desire for skin to look and feel its healthiest. And actually, many of the tips and products that make breakout-prone skin also help to make older skin look flawless, too.

1. Exfoliate Regularly

As we age, many of our skin's processes begin to slow down, among them desquamation—the natural shedding of dead cells from the outermost layer of skin. When dead skin cells aren't removed, skin can appear dull and flat and will often feel rough and textured.

To aid this process, it's important to exfoliate regularly, especially as we get older. Using a physical exfoliant (like a scrub) or a chemical exfoliant (such as a glycolic acid-based toner or cleanser) is an effective way to help remove dead skin in order to brighten and smooth your complexion.

Just be wary of exfoliating too frequently, as this can increase skin's sensitivity—both my mum and I prefer to use a gentle exfoliating cleanser a few times a week instead of an abrasive scrub.

2. Use Brightening Ingredients

Vitamin C was one of the first active ingredients I introduced into my mum's skincare routine. It helps to reduce excess melanin production, which means it's helped to fade the dark spots she was noticing, and has stopped new ones from appearing.

Right now, she uses a vitamin C serum in the morning, and a retinoid in the evening. Retinoids also help to reduce excess melanin production, but are mostly known for their ability to increase collagen production (something else that declines as we age). Collagen gives skin strength and structure, so helps to reduce and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Hydration is key to healthy skin at any and every age, but as most of us will find that our skin gets drier as we get older, it's an important step in a skincare routine for mature skin. I always recommend layering hydration to ensure skin is hydrated deep within its layers, rather than just on the surface.

My mum uses a hydrating face mist to dampen her skin, a hyaluronic acid-based serum to deliver deep moisture, and then a day cream or night cream to seal it all in.

4. Wear SPF Daily

SPF is without a doubt the most important step in any skincare routine. It's essentially the only product that can actually slow down the appearance of the key signs of skin ageing—such as loose skin, pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles, which are caused by UV exposure. That's right, sunscreen is more than just a product you only apply on sunny days or while you're at the beach. When I told my mum that UV impacts our skin even on grey, cloudy days and that it can penetrate glass, she was truly shocked.

Like me, she's now a dedicated SPF 50 wearer on a daily basis and I truly think this has been the most beneficial step in terms of helping to fade and prevent sun spots.

5. Opt for Light Coverage Base Makeup

When it comes to wearing g makeup, the biggest mistake I notice people with mature skin doing is reaching for thick, cakey, high coverage foundations. While these may provide the coverage to conceal redness and pigmentation, their thick textures will settle into line and wrinkles, and will only serve to exaggerate their appearance.

To make older skin look flawless with makeup, choose light coverage foundations, skin tints, and tinted moisturisers, which will help to even out your skin tone without drawing attention to signs of skin ageing.

6. Use Cream Formulas

Likewise, powder formulas will also sit in lines and wrinkles and make them seem deeper and more noticeable. When wearing blusher or bronzer, opt for cream or liquid formulas instead of loose and pressed powders. These will also serve to give your skin a glowy, radiant appearance, so it will appear bright and healthy, too.

Until now, foundation has always been a staple in my makeup bag. Growing up with acne meant that my relationship with makeup was initially centred around a need for coverage and concealment—so foundation was a true staple. I used to spend (what felt like) hours layering my foundation over colour-correcting primers and concealers. Oh, and I never worn anything less than a full coverage foundation. Of course, this approach certainly worked in helping to hide my breakouts and tone down redness, but I wore it solely for practicality, not because I particularly wanted to or enjoyed doing so.

Over the years, my relationship with foundation has taken a complete 180—mostly as I've become more confident and comfortable with embracing my natural skin. 1. Concealer

Back in the day, I used concealer to cover each individual breakout, and I layered it on both under and on top of my foundation. Now, I've learned to use concealer in a whole new way—as an alternative, rather than an accessory to, foundation.

For days when I don't want a full coverage base but maybe still need a little stealth concealing, a concealer does just the trick. I apply it to the areas where it's most needed, and then blend and buff it out, so it appears totally undetectable.
