It's been nine years since my now-husband proposed to me, and in the face of even my own scepticism, I still adore my engagement ring. For someone whose fashion aesthetic has changed in a pretty drastic way in the same space of time, my engagement ring has been a mainstay. An antique style featuring a cluster of rose-cut diamonds encapsulated in an Art Deco setting, on paper, it now wouldn't match my mainly minimal wardrobe. However, it feels so intrinsic to me that it could be a part of my anatomy; ornate but not flashy, statement without being garish, it's still easily my most prized possession. It wasn't expensive either (we were 23 when we got engaged, 24 when we got married), and our budget was next-to-nothing; Still, I can honestly say I wouldn't change for the world. You mightn't be there when your partner makes the decision, which is why I advise all my friends to make the sort of engagement ring they'd like very clear (just maybe not on the third date). 

Over the years, the engagement ring market has broken many of its own rules and now offers an incredible array of rings to suit any wearer. The one downside to this, however, is knowing where to start your search. From cuts to carats, colours to clusters, there are more engagement ring styles out there than ever. So, I thought it would be a good idea to speak to an esteemed panel of experts to find our which engagement ring trends for 2023 they're backing.

"Trends" is perhaps the wrong word—jewellery has a significantly longer lifespan than clothes or other accessories; the turnover isn't as rapid. So, rest assured if the engagement ring style you love or already have on your finger isn't listed here, do not be disheartened. These are merely the engagement ring trends that those in the know have highlighted as talking-points. And you can never be too informed when it comes to such a monumental purchase.

1. Constellations of Stones

"Our clients who are still opting for white diamonds are tending to seek multiple stone options, often in the form of Art Deco styles. The rings are often juxtaposed and created by mixing different cuts of white diamonds,” says Laura Kay, creative director of Tomfoolery London. 

2. Kaleidoscope Colours

"Many of our clients are opting for colour for their engagement rings, which great to see, with some going for completely untraditional looks. We are finding customers are mixing and matching, seeking alternative options; choosing a mix of coloured gemstones and different cuts that work together in harmony within one ring which, perhaps, wouldn’t initially be your first thought for an engagement ring,” says Laura Kay, creative director of Tomfoolery London.

"More than ever, clients are searching for something different to traditional engagement rings, with the brief being for a piece that will stand out from the crowd. Coloured stones do this perfectly. I have found that the main request from my clients is for vibrant coloured stones rather than diamonds," enlightens Lucy Crowther, founder of Minka Jewels.

"Engagement rings will become bolder and more colourful in 2023. This includes coloured diamonds and bold and vibrant-coloured gemstones such as sapphires, rubies and emeralds. Eye-catching and unique, these qualities make the wearer’s personality stand out,” affirms Angie Marei, owner and designer of Marei New York.

3. Two Become One

"Toi-et-moi rings—a ring that coils around the finger with two complementary gemstones—are also becoming a firm favourite. I'd recommend these sorts of designs if you are looking for something a bit more daring: they are great canvases for combining different types of gemstones, shapes, and colours, as well as for incorporating graphic bands and settings,” says Rachel Boston, founder of Rachel Boston. 

"The Toi-et-moi trend will continue, but perhaps we will see slightly more unique interpretations. For example more unusual stone shapes or colours being used," affirms Michelle Oh, owner and designer of Michelle Oh Jewellery. 

4. Solitaires With a Twist

"Solitaires will ever go out of fashion because, as a design, the simplicity of a single-stone ring will always be a timeless option. Still, I think there will be a pivot towards small details that make a single-stone ring look more unusual. For example, perhaps a unique setting style, the unique placement or alignment of the stone itself, or maybe it will be the shape of the ring band. It's all in the details,” says Michelle Oh, owner and designer of Michelle Oh Jewellery. 

5. Spotlight On: Lab-Grown

"I think we will start to see more and more people moving to lab-grown diamonds. They have been around for a long time now but we have recently added them to our offering because we found a 100% climate-neutral and sustainably rated option. Just because they are grown in a laboratory, does not make them ethical, so it was important for us to find the best option here. These are great for people who really want to know exactly where their jewellery is from. And because they are much more affordable than mined diamonds, you can get a much bigger diamond for your budget," says Claire Hammon, co-founder of Meadowlark.

"The one trend that is coming through stronger and stronger is sustainability (although this shouldn’t really be a trend, more of a way of life!). Our clients are becoming more aware of the environmental crisis and are therefore looking to invest in an engagement ring that will both stand the test of time but also minimise its impact on the environment. We are seeing huge demand for lab-grown and antique diamonds, which are by far the most eco-friendly options, and also much more affordable than a newly mined diamond,” agrees Eliza Walter, founder of Lylies.

6. Bumper Bands

"Our clients are investing in metal heavy, bold-band styles that help them express themselves and take up real estate! Following a similar vein, men's rings, once as afterthought, are now taking centre stage, whether they are the ones being proposed to or they too want an engagement ring at the same time as their partner. Our clients are looking for signet/class ring styles, diamond solitaire rings and more design-forward bands, and often mirror their partner’s," says Shahla Karimi, owner and designer of Shahla Karimi. 

"I am noticing a general move away from any engagement ring that is considered traditional. People want something cool and modern that doesn’t have such a conventional connotation attached to it. My most requested style is a single diamond ring in a heavy gold bombe or sculptural ring. People are still channelling their budget into a single diamond, but they are increasingly looking to the design to set the stone more interestingly. They want a unique design, a chunkier ring and often an unusual form to add interest,” affirms Jessie Thomas founder of Jessie Thomas Jewellery. 

7. Endearing Ovals

"We have seen huge interest in oval cut diamonds this year—either set in a solitaire, halo or three stone design—and I predict that this cut will continue to be a popular choice for 2023. My clients are becoming much more adventurous when it comes to combining different cuts of diamonds—baguettes with rounds, for example,” says Emma Clarkson Webb, founder of Emma Clarkson Webb Bespoke Jewellery.

I'm a triple earth sign with a Virgo moon, I have three color-coordinated agendas, and I send my friends calendar invites when we're meeting for a 30-minute coffee—weeks in advance, of course. When buying an engagement ring, the first step is to define your personal style. The process can feel daunting, especially when considering a piece that will symbolize your love and be worn for a lifetime.

The first step in buying an engagement ring is to define your personal style, advises Brooklyn-based bridal designer Steph Mazuera. After launching her business during the COVID-19 lockdown, Mazuera has become known for creating timeless, heirloom-quality pieces with a focus on ethical and sustainable production. Mazuera is one of the fresh, exciting voices within the bridal space in an age when Gen Z is looking at getting hitched and values responsibility and aesthetics over all else. Her TikTok is a fun bonus—and, admittedly, how we connected.

Rather than chasing fleeting trends or opting for a conservative, uninspired design, choose a cut, diamond color, or silhouette that resonates with you personally. Mazuera recommends starting with resources like Pinterest to explore designs that align with your authentic personal style but advises against overwhelming yourself with too many options. Instead, trust your instincts and go with what feels right.

"There's a lot of weirdness around people feeling like certain diamond shapes are 'out' or too trendy or too tied to a celebrity," Mazuera says. She has a point—in 10 years, no one's going to look at your engagement ring and think, Is that a Hailey Bieber oval? "When we talk about choosing your diamond, it's so important to just go with your gut. It helps not to listen to the online chatter and instead find something you're going to love because no one else is gonna wear it."

"Vibe Check" Your Jeweler

When I first started shopping for an engagement ring, I was intimidated by the overwhelming world of diamonds and precious metals. It can feel like a maze of information, but working with the right jeweler can completely transform the experience. One of the key steps is meeting with a jeweler, ideally in person or over Zoom, to collaborate on your vision. I initially consulted several jewelers, including those from luxury design houses, but none seemed to align with my personal style. I knew I wanted something eclectic and out-of-the-box, so I sought out skilled, thoughtful craftspeople who could truly understand and bring my vision to life.

Enter Mazuera, who guided my partner and I through hours of educational lessons, hand-drawn sketches, and behind-the-scenes videos of making my dream ring come to life. "I feel like I serve as sort of a market of people who want something that is very unique to them and something that doesn't feel like everyone else has it," Mazuera explained, nodding to her clientele—often young, hip, and sartorially inclined.

As a result, Mazuera works hand in hand with her bespoke clients in-person over the course of several months. Most of them, she admits, become IRL friends and long-term, repeat customers—a testament to the growing market for personalized, bespoke pieces Mazuera specializes in.

"I feel like we're all very tired of direct-to-consumer, venture-capital-backed corporations where pick your diamond from a spinning image, add a setting, and add it to your cart," she admits. "For other things, it's a great way to buy jewelry, but your engagement ring is something that you really want to sit down and talk to someone about."

Your jeweler making your engagement ring should be someone who is not only knowledgable but also takes the time to know you and your spouse-to-be's love story, Mazuera adds. "The best feeling ever is when I knock it out of the park and I know that I made something that speaks to that person's individual taste."

Do Your Research

Once you chose your jeweler, the best thing to do is to dive into the research process. For most people, their jeweler will encourage them to sit down and go through the crafted makeup of an engagement ring. Technical details like buying a lab-created or Earth-mined diamond, shank and basket details, CAD—or computer aided design—molds, and whether or not you want a hand-fabricated ring are all topics you should keep top of mind. Prepare to come with questions and answers about crucial topics like budgets and timeline so your jeweler can adequately provide reasonable expectation.

After an initial consultation, jewelers may require a small fee to begin sourcing diamonds based on your preferences or rough sketches. It’s helpful to have a clear idea of the stone cut and size you want so your jeweler can present options in person. Mazuera works first by having a client narrow down their diamond selections and then sketches a complete ring designed around a stone's characteristics. "At the end of the day, I always tell people to pick the stone that you put on your hand and love immediately," she says. Mazuera prefers not to discuss the four Cs until after clients have selected their favorites, emphasizing that the first impression of a diamond’s character should guide the choice, rather than its perceived value.

Once an ideal stone, shank, and basket are in place, jewelers typically design a lifelike 3D rendering—a CAD—which can then be printed and cast in wax or silver for Mazuera and a couple to see in the flesh.

You can also go the hand-fabricated route, Mazuera says, especially if you're looking at a larger stone. In short, hand fabrication is the "traditional" way of creating bespoke pieces where a jeweler will heat up raw material and work it into a desired shape via forging. It's a technique Mazuera often blends into her work, hand-fabricating prongs or baskets to ensure increased durability for stones over four carats or diamonds on thin bands.

Determine How Involved You Want to Be in the Process

Nowadays, it's more common than not for people who are receiving an engagement ring to be involved in the process. Whether it's seeing the full design, from stone selection to delivery, or stepping out somewhere in the middle, it's important to determine how surprised you want to be when seeing your engagement ring.

If you're hoping to maintain a slight element of secrecy, Mazuera encourages the person who is receiving the ring to step out of the process prior to seeing a detailed sketch or 3D rendering of the ring. (That's what I did!) There's no set time to step away, though—Mazuera says there's some couples who work with her throughout the entire process, and it doesn't take away from the proposal or the ring at all.

If you want to completely be surprised, Mazuera suggests sending your person to one of your favorite jewelers with a few guidelines like stone shape or metal type. "If there's a designer that you think every single piece is amazing, and you'd be happy to own any piece from this designer, that's a great way to be 100% floored," she says. "If you feel that strongly about their work, you're probably going to be fine with whatever comes out of the end process."

But still, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that engagement-ring preferences tend to ebb and flow. You never know; you might find something that feels more intrinsically "you" than, say, a classic solitaire. So, what are the top engagement-ring trends for 2022, I hear you ask? Let's get into it.

I got engaged way back in 2013, so suffice to say, I've fallen a little out of the loop regarding engagement-ring trends. So I turned to the experts. I spoke to four jewellery designers who create some of the most stunning engagement rings I've ever laid eyes on. With more bespoke engagement-ring requests being made than ever before, these professionals have first-hand insight into the most in-demand engagement-ring trends for 2022. 1. GYPSY ENGAGEMENT RINGS

"Gypsy Rings [rings where gemstone is set flush into the band, and actually have a pretty fascinating history leading back to the Victorian age] have been making a real comeback recently and we are thrilled about this as big and bold is what we do best,” says Lucy Crowther, founder of Minka Jewels. Are two stones better than one? That’s totally down to your personal preference and opinion, but what you can’t deny is that two-stone engagement rings are having a moment right now. Cropping up in the collections of designers big and small, ready-to-wear and bespoke, and I have a feeling this is an engagement-ring "trend” that’ll be sticking around for a long while.

"Mixed metals are having a real moment—my clients are combining yellow and white gold and rose and white gold which gives a really modern, impactful look,” says Emma Clarkson Webb, founder of Emma Clarkson Webb Bespoke. "Traditionally it was an absolute no to mix metals, so I love that it’s back in fashion; it makes for such a versatile look and means that you aren’t limited in terms of your other jewellery. My clients are also becoming much more adventurous when it comes to combining different cuts of diamonds—baguettes with rounds, for example. I love that there are no rules when it comes to designing an engagement ring; in 2022, anything goes!"

"The biggest trend I'm seeing is still sculptural rings,” affirms Jessie Thomas, founder of Jessie Thomas Jewellery. "People are looking for a more interesting version of a solitaire—something that’s a bit chunkier and cooler. A ring that is more individual and unique to them. There is a real move away from dainty, claw set diamonds and it's often more in line with certain peoples style to have something heavier, asymmetrical and unusual."

"At the moment we are seeing people gravitate towards classic styles, but with a twist,” advises Rachel Boston, founder of Rachel Boston Jewellery. "This is very visible in the type of trilogy rings we are making at the moment. While the trilogy, or three-stone ring, is a classic design for an engagement ring (with the three stones romantically symbolising past, present, and future), we are seeing clients veer away from classic combinations, and towards more unusually shaped side-stones. We have been using half-moon side diamonds for a modern take on a softer, vintage style, as well as more graphic epaulette, trapeze, and bullet cut diamonds for the stylish deco-inspired geometry they lend a more traditionally-shaped centre stone. The combinations are endless, so even though it is instantly recognisable as an engagement ring, there is a lot of scope for the wearer's taste and personality to come through."

I'm going to say something that might surprise you, but engagement ring trends shouldn't really be a thing. Ultimately, you should just find the ring that you love the most. However, I would say that everyone needs some inspiration, which is why looking at the most popular ring trends is so useful. There could be styles, cuts, gems, and metals you might not have considered before. You might realise that classic princess-cut diamond ring isn't actually in line with your usual style.

I had the chance to ask nine jewellers about the biggest engagement ring trends coming up for 2021, and there were five key styles that I think you'll find interesting. Whether you're aiming for a collection like VB (we can all dream) or are just after some inspiration, I suggest you keep scrolling for everything you need to know. 

1. COLOURED STONES

Out of the nine jewellers who I spoke to, over half told me that coloured stones and gems are going to be big business in 2021. Emma Clarkson Webb says she's seeing a "real movement towards coloured gemstones—from salt and pepper diamonds to tsavorites and tourmalines."

Similarly, Lucy Crowther, the founder of Minka Jewels, says she's seen a rise in the popularity of coloured pieces. "I love chunky gold rings with a flash of colour, and this coming year, I think we will be seeing a lot more of them," she says.

Phoebe Coleman also said that she expects to see an increase in people being more adventurous with their stone choices, "opting for grey sapphires rather than royal blue for example," she tells me. 

2. CHUNKY

According to jeweller Jessie Thomas, there's an increase in the popularity of chunky rings. "While people's styles seem to be remaining very minimal, this is well complemented by a cool, modern chunky ring," she says. Crowther also said that she'd seen a trend towards clients after chunkier, bolder pieces. 

3. MODERN

There's definitely been a big move away from traditional designs, according to nearly everyone I spoke to. Designer Liv Luttrell is seeing interesting and unusual abstract styles coming up more frequently and said that she's seen "a growing interest in creating more design-led engagement rings over the past few years." 

Angie Marei of Diaboli Kill also reinforced the idea of clients hunting down more unique jewels. "I am seeing more people requesting non-traditional engagement rings and custom-designed settings. This makes me think that there's possibly a decline in the traditional round solitaire-setting designs," the designer tells me. 

And to really cement this as a key engagement ring trend of 2021, Meadowlark Jewellery also says similar: "Strong and bold settings with fluid form have been increasingly popular for us. They are not only really comfortable and practical to wear, but they protect the stone and allow for an understated bridal look."

4. Sapphires

Nope, the Kate Middleton effect hasn't worn off yet, but it's definitely changing. The team at Meadowlark Jewellery told me that sapphires are still going strong and that they "don't see this changing any time soon." Michelle Oh reported a slightly different take on the trend. While the sapphire ring isn't declining, those done in the style of the Duchess of Cambridge's are. Oh told me that she's seeing requests for "more unusual designs that combine sapphire as well as diamonds in the ring. Teal sapphires are hugely in demand right now, as well as hexagonal or more geometric shapes of sapphires."

5. Multi-Stone

According to designer Shahla Karimi one trend that is set to rise in 2021 is the two-stone ring. "We saw this a bit last year, but I think it will become more prevalent in the engagement world this year. Since the trend did so well as just fashion pieces, I can see a more elevated version coming into play in 2021. However, bigger isn't always better in regard to this style. My advice for shopping two-stone rings is to pay attention to stone size. If the stones are too big, it can take away from the design and doesn't allow for much appreciation of each individual stone," she says.

Not to say I told you so, but were we not just discussing how many celebrity engagements are happening this season? Well, now we have another one to buzz about because none other than Emma Stone has just announced her engagement to Dave McCary. The Saturday Night Live director and writer shared the sweetest photo of the two on Instagram that showed Stone revealing her beautiful antique-style engagement ring.

Stone's ring is stunning no doubt, and it also happens to be one of the most popular engagement ring styles experts are predicting for 2020. According to Olivia Landau, who's a fourth-generation gemologist and founder and CEO of The Clear Cut, "Antique diamonds like old mine cuts and old European cuts have become extremely popular. They are distinct for their chunkier facets, steep crown angle, small table and the presence of a culet. What people love about antique diamonds is that no two are the same and they have a very charming faceting pattern and sparkle." While we can't confirm if Stone's ring is actually antique or not, it definitely has the signature sparkle and charm that Landau mentions.

According to Pinterest, we’re well into the time of year that searches for engagement rings increase by an average of 40%. June to January is officially engagement season, says the inspiration site, with Christmas being one of the most popular times to propose. So whether you’re waiting on that big question or far from it, what’s the harm in having an ogle at some of the most popular styles for the upcoming year? If you are in that place, it’s definitely acceptable to leave this article open on your laptop at home or subtly forward on to one of your partner's confidants. 

Although classic cuts and colours reign in the engagement ring world, there are always some trends that could make your choice stand out from everyone else's and help guide your partner into picking your perfect style. For 2020, the influence of the royals is still going strong with trilogy and multi-stone rings similar to Meghan Markle’s being ever popular. Similarly, colourful stones are becoming more and more of a classic choice thanks to Kate Middleton’s iconic sapphire number. Halo engagement rings saw a huge surge in popularity in 2019, with Pinterest noting a 565% rise in searches, but for next year, the simple solitaire is due to make a notable comeback.

Unsurprisingly, there’s also a conscious move toward more sustainable options. Alison Skeates, co-founder and CEO of London jewellery boutique EC One, says, "We've definitely seen an increase in people asking for sustainable engagement rings. In fact, customers have sought us out to create bespoke rings using recycled metals, gemstones and Fairtrade Gold, as well as rings set with lab-grown diamonds." That's one trend we're sure will last far beyond 2020.

1. Sustainable

According to Laura Chavez, founder of sustainable jewellery brand Lark & Berry, "Around 70% of millennials are saying they're considering cultured (also called cultivated or lab-grown) diamonds for their rings. … We are seeing an upward trend given the benefits over mined diamonds: 100% conflict-free, no land or wildlife displacement and no groundwater pollution." The brand also plants five trees for every item of jewellery purchased from it, including engagement rings. 

2. Multi-Stone

Chavez also says the brand has been asked this season "for classic pieces with a twist, such as multi-stone rings, a modernised version of the traditional three-stone that started with the 'Meghan Markle effect.'" Why have one diamond when you could have six, right?

3. Coloured Stones

Skeates says of coloured stones, "Our customers are increasingly asking for 'alternative engagement ring' styles with peach-coloured or champagne sapphires and diamonds in yellow gold for a warmer hue." Choosing a colour that's special to you is certainly a way of making your ring unique, and it can often give a vintage twist if that's your style. Pinterest also noted a 208% rise in searches for turquoise rings, so be prepared to see plenty on your Instagram feeds over Christmas. 

4. Emerald Cut

Designers are also noting a rise in fancy-cut diamonds—that's the official name for anything other than round. The emerald cut is a classically different option that has an antique vibe but with a sophisticated silhouette. Jennifer Lopez recently flashed her new (rather large) emerald-cut engagement ring from Alex Rodriguez, and we're big fans. 

5. Pavé Bands

Make like Markle (along with many other recent brides) and up the sparkle with a pavé band to complement your main stone. The Duchess of Sussex was clearly very keen to incorporate this into her engagement ring, as she notably broke tradition and updated her original gold band after the recent birth of her son, Archie.

6. Solitaire

Gemma Clark, a Boodles sales associate and engagement ring expert, says of this iconic style, "People tend to be either in the vintage camp, or they go for a totally classic design and choose a solitaire ring whereby the central stone does all the talking." These rings certainly shout timeless to us.

Mismatched Diamond Colours

"Diamonds are graded on four criteria: cut, colour, carat, and clarity. You can get by with all sorts of combinations of the above, but I like to avoid diamonds that have a super-low colour grade. Diamonds that are K, L, and M tend to really show a yellow hint—not quite look like that bright, white diamond you've always thought of." — Octavia Zamagias, Octavia Elizabeth Jewelry

"You might be able to go up in carat weight, but rather than getting a larger stone in this colour range, I suggest sizing down for a whiter diamond that will really look more expensive overall." — Zamagias

Prongs That Aren't Balanced

"Prongs that are too wide or heavy can distract from a gorgeous center diamond, and cheapen the look of an engagement ring." — Ashley Zhang, Ashley Zhang Jewelry

"Whether you're working with a quarter of a carat or five carats, be sure your stone is set by an expert. Imperfect settings that look like an arts-and-crafts project are not what you want in a long-term investment like an engagement ring." — Zamagias

Clumsy Metalwork

"There's nothing that screams cheap more than bad metalwork." — Corina Madilian, Single Stone

Unmatched Diamond Halo and Center Stone Color

"If you're considering a diamond halo to complement your center stone, be sure the small stones, or melee, are relatively a match in color. Having a huge contrast in the color qualities will be a notable difference that confuses the eye—and not in a good way!" — Zamagias

"Matching your center stone to the diamond melee in the halo will actually make the center stone appear larger, which is usually the goal of a diamond halo in the first place." — Zamagias

Diamonds That Are Set Too High

"Diamonds that are set too high can make an engagement ring look cheap. Many times, this is due to going to a jeweler who is using a mass-produced setting that is made to fit a variety of diamond sizes. There will be too much space under the culet (the pointy part of the diamond)." — Zhang

"We always make our settings from scratch based on the measurements of the diamond. This ensures a setting that is lower to the finger and more comfortable for everyday wear." — Zhang

Compromising on Your Personal Style

"Choose a style that works with you and your lifestyle. It doesn't make sense to have the It ring if it doesn't work for YOU." — Madilian

How to avoid the above:

"Choose an engagement ring that reflects your style as a couple and your shared aesthetic. Don't be afraid of picking the 'wrong' ring or get caught up in a specific trend. It's best to stick to a classic if you don't know what else to choose. You can always personalize your ring with bands to create something special, just for you." — Madilian

It Doesn't Quite Fit Your Finger

"This one may come as a surprise, but maybe you've got your dream ring, and it's just slightly too big or too small. Don't skimp on the resizing fee. Also don't go to a place that isn't professional. What you often end up with is a shank that's obviously cut and manipulated. Sure, it looks okay top-down, but flip that ring around and you see a solder line or mismatched seam. It's not pretty and instantly cheapens the ring." — Zamagias

"If you need your ring resized, take it or ship it to the jeweler who made the ring. It might be more expensive and take a few weeks, but you've come this far! The seam should be undetectable." — Zamagias

Congratulations are in order: Cressida Bonas just got engaged to Harry Wentworth-Stanley while in Nantucket. The groom-to-be shared the news on Instagram with a sweet selfie and a simple caption: "We getting married." They look cute and all, but we immediately zeroed in on Bonas's unique engagement ring. How stunning is the piece of jewellery? With gold and ruby accents encircling the center diamond, it's far from your average diamond solitaire ring. According to British Vogue, the style is known as a "target ring" and comes from the art deco era.

However, jewellery maintenance goes way beyond not wearing it in the shower or spraying perfume directly upon it. As such, we asked two industry experts for their at-home cleaning tips.

To create the ultimate how-to guide, we enlisted the help Susan Caplan, founder of Susan Caplan Vintage Jewellery, and a representative from Links of London. With their shared expertise in the jewellery industry, we were able to pinpoint specific care instructions for different types of materials and stones. From diamonds and pearls to sterling silver and gold, keep scrolling for our complete guide on how to clean jewellery at home.

DIAMONDS

"The best way to clean diamonds is with a mild detergent," reveals Links of London's rep. "You can purchase diamond specific formulas but gentle detergents such as baby shampoo also work wonders. Using it with a soft brush and warm water to gently loosen any dirt—the sparkle will speak for itself. I also recommend avoiding exposing your diamonds to extreme temperatures and activities, so as to help better protect your jewellery."

BRASS

"Brass can tarnish easily," warns Caplan. "That said, tarnished items can also be cleaned quite effectively by using a jewellery silver-dip solution. We've found it to be extremely effective in cleaning tarnished items on most of our costume jewellery, so do so at your own risk. If you leave it in the solution too long, it can have adverse effects."

COLOURED GEMSTONES

"Stones may loosen naturally over time, so it's best to have the settings checked every now and again," suggests Links of London's representative. "Many gemstones can be cleaned in the same manner as diamonds. Others, however, require different care. For example, opals should only be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth."

CRYSTALS

"Sometimes can sometimes succumb to green verdigris," explains Caplan. "This can be extremely tricky to remove in items like crystal pieces, which have lots of small settings. As surprising as it sounds, ketchup is brilliant at removing verdigris and manages to get into hard-to-reach places. Gently brush with an used toothbrush, and then finish by delicately rinsing in room-temperature water. Extra care should be taken if crystals are present, as the crystals can loosen or fall out."

GOLD

"To keep your gold jewellery looking as good as gold can, I suggest regular cleaning with a dedicated gold-polishing cloth," says Links of London's rep. "Infused with cleaners and anti-tarnishing agents, avoid washing it to ensure it's as effective as possible. You can buy them Links of London stores and online."

PEARLS

"Whatever you do, don't use any solutions on pearls," stresses Caplan. "They're incredibly absorbent, and it doesn't take much to damage them beyond repair." Instead, after every wear, wipe your pearls with a soft cloth. "This will help prevent buildup of oils or other substances that may have come in contact with your jewellery throughout the day."

SILVER

"It definitely pays to invest in premium silver pieces. At Links of London, our sterling-silver jewellery is coated with an anti-tarnish solution, but it may still tarnish naturally over time. To recapture its original brilliance, clean with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth."

WATCHES

Watches are one of the pieces many of us wear daily, but how often do you clean yours? With unavoidable sweat buildup, we advise taking a couple of minutes every evening to clean it properly. With a soft, clean cloth, wipe the inside of the band, and wipe gently around the case back—this will remove excess moisture and lotion buildup. Caplan also recommends storing your watches separately, as the glass can be easily scratched. "In addition, make sure all lay flat otherwise the joints can get twisted and break," she reveals.

Getting engaged is a truly lovely thing; there's no doubt about that. But when my now-husband asked me that very significant question six years ago and I overcame the initial shock as he proceeded to place a vintage diamond ring on my finger, I had a sudden pang of dread. I'm clumsy by nature, and in a flash, I was given the most precious object I'll likely ever own. To wear all day, every day, and not break. Or throw out with the recycling. Or somehow set on fire. It was—and still is—a lot of pressure for the person who, at last count, has misplaced her bank card on seven separate occasions, to take on. I realised I had no idea how to care for an engagement ring—which, unless you happen to be in the business of diamonds, is common for most who find themselves recently engaged. 

Which is why I decided to speak to someone who knows what she's talking about when it comes to fine ring upkeep: Irish jewellery designer Chupi Sweetman. Having founded her namesake brand Chupi in 2013, she has since gone on to win countless industry awards for her nature-inspired creations and has made many a dream come true with her beautiful settings and unique stone selection. 

Throughout her career, she's made thousands of engagement rings, so it's little wonder that she's discovered some pretty excellent tips and tricks for keeping them looking their best. So make like Shirley Bassey and ensure your diamonds really do last forever with Chupi's expert guide on how to care for an engagement ring.

Pro service: 

“I suggest to all my customers that they should have their ring professionally cleaned once a year. It’ll keep it looking it’s best, and they’ll likely check the setting while they’re at it, which is paramount for preventing any stone loss.”

Do it yourself: 

“In between professional cleanings, use baby soap and an old toothbrush to spruce up my jewels. It sounds so odd, but it really works! Baby soaps are super gentle, and as old toothbrushes tend to have soft bristles, the combination will make your jewellery sparkly again without using harsh products.”

Look for clouding: 

“If your stone ever looks hazy or cloudy, it’s likely something is stuck underneath it and it will require a deep clean. You should do this as soon as possible as what’s lurking behind it could be damaging the stone’s surface.”

Avoid open drains at all costs: 

“It sounds obvious, but so many engagement rings are lost as they’re being cleaned over a sink where the drain hasn’t been plugged. Even if you think the holes are too small for it to fit through, it’s not worth the risk.”

Taking a dip in the pool? I don’t think so: 

“Harsh chemicals can gravely affect the quality of your diamond—even a mildly chlorinated pool can cause irreversible issues. Chemicals are also capable of eroding metal and dulling its shine, so I recommend even plain wedding bands sit a pool session out. The same goes for any cleaning sessions—chemicals found in most household polishes and bleaches can ruin fine jewellery. Marigolds at the ready…”

The beach? Not much better: 

“Aside from the fact it could be easily lost—the term needle in a haystack is an understatement—sand has a tendency to get into even the smallest gaps in settings and can be a real endeavour to get out. Plus the beach often equals sunscreen, which can cloud your diamond.”

If in doubt, insure: 

“As it is so precious and holds so much sentimental value, insure your ring. You'll need to provide a description of the ring—its cut, carat weight, and metal—written up by a jeweller. Take photographs from every angle, too; they’ll be invaluable should the worst come to worst, and a talented designer could even re-create the ring now gone.”

Beware the chill: 

“Being out in the cold causes your fingers to shrink, which may cause your ring to loosen slightly. If you feel it moving around too much, put it somewhere safe if you can. Take particular care when taking gloves off, too, as loose rings can get caught in the material.”

Hitting the gym:

“As a rule, I say it’s best to take off any jewellery when you’re working out, particularly if your regimen involves heavy lifting. Any intense pressure applied to the band can cause it to bend. Pavé band owners should be particularly wary of this as the diamonds could simply fall out if the band is compromised in any way.”

Dish it out: 

“Keep ring dishes around the house, so if you do need to take them off, you know where to find them. There are so many cute ones out there, so you can make a real focal point of them around your home.”

Effortlessly elegant and timeless, Pinterest has also seen a spike in pearl ring repins. Pearl jewellery has had a resurgence of late, so it's no surprise engagement rings with freshwater focal points are also on the up.

THICK BANDS

"Many of our bespoke customers are opting for robust, thick bands in place of delicate rings," says Rowland. It seems the trend has also been picked up by some jewellery powerhouses, too.

Considering the Four Cs

“Because there is a combination of the four Cs of quality, there will be infinite ranges within every range of cut and weight. The ranges I used with the four Cs for price range comparison of each round-cut carat size are as follows:

Color: G color or better

Cut: Good or better

Clarity: VS2 or better

Carat Weight: Within .05 +/- the round carat. For example, the carat weight range was .95 to 1.05 for one carat, 1.95 to 2.05 for a two carat, etc.

“To give you a good idea for pricing out when it comes to diamonds, imagine asking your realtor to evaluate the price of a two-bedroom house. It would depend on a lot of different things—location and neighborhood, square footage, condition, and style of home, etc. Like with anything of significant value, pricing depends on the relative scarcity of the diamond and customer demand.”

Christmas day is often known as one of, if not the most, popular date in the year to propose, so it's no surprise that we've got engagement rings on the mind. But do you know exactly how to find the right one? Whether you're buying it for a partner or just want to find one for yourself (which is totally okay by the way), there are a few tips and tricks you need to know.

Now, because we're not diamond experts (we wish), we're unable to advise you, however, we spoke to Sarah-Jane Tidy from Queensmith Master Jewellers in Hatton Garden about what you need to look for and how to avoid any potential pitfalls when selecting a perfect piece of jewellery. #1: Do your research

"Research designs you think your partner might like. What's in their jewellery box at the moment, are they more classic or do they like things a little bit different? Some like to get their partner's best friends involved for advice, but personally, I'd recommend going it alone. Once you've popped the question, you can make your announcement and show off the bling to everyone as a couple and witness your friends' and families' reactions together. Find a jeweller with a full money-back or remake guarantee just in case they don't like it and you're guaranteed the brownie points with the safety net of a backup plan."

#2: Don't worry about the ring size

"Don't worry too much about the ring size, as there are a lot of other more important factors to worry over. No, but seriously, there is a direct correlation between a ladies dress size, height and ring size. I always like to over-egg it to make sure it goes over the knuckle. Resizing is quick and simple to do, and any good jeweller will include it as part of your aftercare package. Queensmith typically resize engagement rings in around three days and free of charge."

#3: Make sure your diamond has a certificate

"Always buy a diamond certified by the GIA–the world's most-renowned grading laboratory, and enlist the services of a bespoke manufacturing jeweller. The great thing about GIA-certified diamonds is that there is a laser inscription of its own unique certification number on the actual diamond itself. It's so minuscule that you'll never in a million years be able to see it with the unaided eye. All reputable jewellers will have microscopes for you to check the GIA number for yourself and confirm its authenticity. However, the setting is just as important as the diamond. A high-quality setting is not only going to showcase your diamond to its full potential, but it's going to keep it safe on your partner's finger for decades to come."

#4: Get the most for your money

"For the optimum amount of sparkle and the biggest bang for your buck, the best choice is a halo ring. This style is essentially a row of delicately set diamonds surrounding the main centre diamond. The execution of a halo can either make or break the design, and I've seen some shocking examples. To get the best results, all small diamonds must be perfectly calibrated for cut, colour, clarity and size. It's crucial they all match the quality of your main centre diamond. Next up the metal work: Keep it delicate and refined and make sure it's what we would describe as wedding band–friendly, meaning that when it comes to wedding time, they'll be able to fit a wedding band perfectly flush against their engagement ring."

#5: Get a care package

"When deciding where you should purchase your engagement ring, there are lots of factors to consider more than just the diamond itself. Any jeweller worth their salt will offer an attractive aftercare package, including a lifetime manufacturers warranty, lifetime of polishing and ring resizing. On top of that, look for places that will give you a full money-back guarantee or the offer of remaking the ring for free, if it turns out you got the 'yes' but the ring didn't."

Engagement season is pretty much from now until February, so if you're dropping hints, buying your own, or just want to send some ideas to your soon-to-be betrothed, then you might want to consider one engagement ring trend: rose gold. If you're already hunting down bands on Pinterest, it'll probably come as no surprise that this engagement ring is one of the biggest trends of this year and 2018.

Speaking to Brides, jeweller Selin Kent also revealed that while the colour isn't going anywhere, she recommends that you opt for a "setting that holds the centre stone to be in platinum or white gold, even if the rest of the ring is in a colored metal. Diamonds can take on the colour of the metal they’re set in, so mixing metals within the ring will show a diamond in its best light."

I also spoke to Rosalyn Mulrooney, who is the manager at Hatton Jewels, about whether or not the store has seen an increase in demand for this particular type of ring. "We've definitely seen a rise in rose gold. While the stone is still diamonds, people specifically ask for a rose gold band," she said.

"The Russians used to have it in the Victorian times, and now it's coming back," she revealed. "Although it used to be much more popular as a metal for charm bracelets, it's now engagement rings that everyone wants."

Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle over a roast chicken dinner this year, with a ring that he designed himself with court jewellers Cleave & Company. He sourced the central stone in Botswana, and the two surrounding stones were from Princess Diana's personal jewellery collection.

Princess Margaret's middle name is Rose, so it seems apt that her husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones, designed an engagement ring for her that resembled a rosebud with a ruby set by a cluster of diamonds.

The Duke of Windsor proposed to Wallis Simpson with an unconventional 19.76-carat emerald ring by Cartier engraved with the message "We Are Ours Now 27 x 36." The "We" represents Wallis and Edward, and the numbers are said to stand for 27 October 1936, the date of her divorce from her second husband.

Prince William proposed to the Duchess of Cambridge in Kenya with the 12-karat sapphire-and-diamond ring that belonged to his mother, Princess Diana, explaining it was a way that she could be there for the special too. Following the engagement, Prince William told ITV, "It's my mother's engagement ring, and it's very special to me, as Kate is very special to me now as well. It was only right the two were put together. It was my way of making sure mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement and the fact that we're going to spend the rest of our lives together."

Queen Elizabeth II's engagement ring is equally sentimental, as the diamond was from one of Prince Phillip's mother's tiaras. Fun fact: Jewellery brand Clogau has been creating wedding rings for some members of the royal family since 1923 using rare Welsh gold.

Princess Charlene of Monaco's engagement ring is a three-carat, pear-shaped diamond ring created by Maison Repossi.

Queen Letizia's engagement ring is a band by jeweller Suárez and features 16 diamonds in a white-gold setting. Letizia is now rarely seen wearing her ring.

Prince Rainier III first proposed to Grace Kelly with a diamond-and-ruby eternity band by Cartier. However, he upgraded this to a spectacular 10.48-carat emerald-cut diamond surrounded by two diamonds also by Cartier. Most of these gems in question have been spotted on celebs and trendsetters—in other words, they're massive by our standards. But what constitutes a "big" ring in the real world? Well, to get a sense of what you and I would consider a large rock, Who What Wear tapped five diamond experts to spill on the size they think average girls would consider big. Then we pooled their answers to find the average carat number.

"The average engagement ring in the U.S. has a centre diamond of about one carat and a total carat weight of approximately one and a half carats. An engagement ring around two carats or above would be considered 'big' for the average girl's standards, and anything three carats or above would likely elicit some serious jaw-dropping. Besides carat weight, several other factors, like the shape and cut of a diamond, can affect how large it appears. The cut of a diamond determines its sparkle and brilliance, and it can also affect its visual size. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear to be different sizes depending on the depth or shape of their cut. If a diamond is cut very shallow, it has more surface area and so may appear larger, but it would lack depth and sparkle, and it would receive a poor cut grade. Only round diamonds with a cut grade of 'very good' or 'excellent,' and fancy diamonds that meet our criteria for beauty are eligible to become a Forevermark diamond, the authority on diamonds for over 125 years." — Kristen Trustey, Forevermark

Whether you’re in the market for a modest engagement ring or a larger sparkler, it’s a good idea to visualise how those carats will look against your hand. The folks at Erstwhile Jewellery note that while a setting can affect how large a diamond looks, the stone will naturally look different across various hand sizes.

Women with smaller hands tend to gravitate toward smaller rocks, but the Instagram video shared by the brand shows how a woman with a size 4.5 finger can easily pull off a 1.5- and 2.5-carat ring without it looking too bulky. And if your ring size is on the bigger side, you can always add a halo or clusters on either side to create the illusion of a bigger stone. Whichever way you go, it’s always a good idea to try before you buy.

KENZA SADOUN-EL GLAOUI: I don't feel concerned at all with marriage, because for me the most beautiful contract in love is to create a family, above all. Nevertheless, I love the tradition that involves the engagement ring. Of course, the size of the ring doesn't really matter, and I think it will only be tacky if you wear it this way.

WWW: Coloured stones are a big trend in the U.S. and the UK. Are you on board?

Glaoui: Paradoxically, I'm very modern in my conception of marriage because it doesn't matter more than through my eyes, but if I'm supposed to marry a man, I would love to wear a white diamond.

WWW: Do French girls ever hint to their significant other about what type of ring they'd want, or even go ring shopping together?

Glaoui: Most of my friends have made allusions to their husbands about what they want.

WWW: Do most French girls prefer a traditional engagement ring or a simple, understated band? Glaoui: I think it's very personal. Some will prefer a new ring, but many will want to wear the ring of their grandmother for example.

WWW: What type of metal do you favour? (Gold, rose gold, platinum, white gold.)

Glaoui: I wear only gold! So I will opt for that, I think.

ADELINE RAPON: Depends on the ring, but to me, a huge diamond on a solitary is a no-no. I much prefer big rings with a big sapphire and diamonds.

Rapon: As a jeweller, I can tell that sapphires are people's favourites, followed by rubies and emeralds. But engagement rings are mostly diamond or sapphire.

Rapon: It really depends. I've done engagement rings for friends and their girlfriend didn't know at all what was going on. But I also see many couples coming and choosing the ring together, the woman (or man!) knowing the price or not.

WWW: Do most French girls prefer a traditional engagement ring or a simple, understated band? Rapon: I think people mostly have a solitary for engagement; it's a classic. But where I'm working, there are a lot of huge or original rings, and even vintage ones!

WWW: What type of metal do you favour? (Gold, rose gold, platinum, white gold.)

Rapon: I love rose gold and gold, they're warmer.

But what we do question is how much should you really spend on one. You've probably heard a month's or two months' salary before.

Well, the concept of "how much" actually dates back to the 1930s, after De Beers launched a marketing campaign to strengthen the tradition of the ring (you know the jeweller's still-used-today slogan, "A Diamond Is Forever") and convince people to buy diamonds (which haven't been classified as a rare stone since the 1870s) in a bad economy. An ad in the late 1930s suggested spending a month's salary on an engagement ring, and then in the 1980s, that switched to two months' salary (check out the ad below), because "Isn't two months' salary a small price to pay for something that lasts forever?" So there you have it. That's where this tradition of spending a fortune on a ring came from—a marketing ploy.

Next up, the rules on how much to spend on an engagement ring.

The thing about celebrity engagement rings is that the longer you read about them, the more skewed your perception of "expensive" becomes. A ring that racked up a £150,000 receipt is no longer considered to be worth a second glance when you compare it to one that cost a cool £7 million. In reality, though, nearly every celebrity engagement ring is absurdly beautiful, large and therefore, pricey. What's more, the stories and proposals behind them make every ring that little bit more interesting.

From Victoria Beckham's incredible engagement ring from David Beckham (apparently she has 14 others in the collection, as you do) to Jennifer Lopez's pink jewel from Ben Affleck, there are so many we know you'll be keen to ogle. Recently proposed to by beau Channing Tatum, Zoë Kravitz received a elongated cushion-cut diamond ring in a bezel setting.

Kravitz's personal style is timeless and feminine, and this cushion-cut diamond ring is set to compliment's her taste perfectly. 

What’s better than one engagement ring? The answer is two engagement rings, and that’s precisely what musician Machine Gun Kelly proposed to actor Megan Fox with in January of 2022. 

The engagement ring was custom-designed by Machine Gun Kelly and holds a special meaning for the couple. "I know tradition is one ring, but I designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: The emerald (her birthstone) and the diamond (my birthstone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love," he said in his Instagram caption. The ring is estimated to be worth £249,000 ($340,000). 

Italian property tycoon, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, opted for a very classic-looking round-cut diamond flanked by baguettes—an elegant and sensible move considering Beatrice's personal style revolves around sophisticated floral dresses, delicate heels, pretty colours and timeless accessories. 

Created through a bespoke service offered by famed British jeweller Shaun Leane, this ring has features both Art Deco and Victorian references, hence it's familiar vintage feel but sparkling-new effect. According to the brand's press release, it was crafted and set by hand from the designer's Mayfair atelier and the diamonds are of the highest clarity and colour, ethically sourced and GIA certified. "Being able to incorporate both Edoardo and Princess Beatrice's characters into the design has resulted in a unique ring that represents their love and lives intertwining," says Leane. 

Take one of our favourite recent whoppers of a diamond: Emily Ratajkowski was married back in February of 2018 (you may recall her rather awesome yellow Zara trouser suit chosen instead of a traditional dress), but until now she had been wearing a gold band instead of this two-diamond beauty. Revealed alongside a chunky gold band there is one pear-shaped stone alongside a square, creating a truly unique engagement ring idea we hadn't seen before.

A close-up on Emily's new engagement and wedding rings shows just how unique a combination has been created. Experts speculate that this ring cost somewhere between £40,000 and £73,000.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement on 27 November 2017. The pair revealed their news in the morning via a press release and followed it up with an appearance at Kensington Palace, where Markle showed off the ring.

The ring was designed by Prince Harry with the jewellers Cleave and Company. It has three stones—two are from Princess Diana's collection and the centre diamond was sourced from Botswana.

Lindsay Lohan said "yes” to her boyfriend, Bader Shammas, who proposed to the actor in November 2021. While the details behind the ring haven’t been disclosed, it is thought to be created by A-list diamond favourite, Harry Winston, and is estimated to weigh between 4 and 6 carats. 

In October 2021, former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker got down on one knee on a rose-covered beach in California, proposing to Kourtney Kardashian with an epic oval-cut diamond engagement ring. The ring, which is estimated to have a worth of around £735,000 ($1,000,000). 

Priyanka Chopra and Joe Jonas recently announced their engagement via the medium celebrities tend to favour these days: Instagram. The square-cut diamond was "accidentally" revealed when Priyanka was photographed alongside a friend in a selfie—the newly-engaged couple then followed up with some more official snaps in Mumbai and shared on social.

In case you missed the headlines, singer Ariana Grande has confirmed her engagement to SNL comedian Pete Davidson. It's reported the couple started dating just one month before Davidson popped the question, with the diamond ring said to be over three carats and costs around £70,000.

Happily there are two royal weddings to look forward to this year, thanks to Princess Eugenie getting engaged to her boyfriend of seven years, Jack Brooksbank, a British wine merchant. The ring is a padparadscha sapphire surrounded by 10 white diamonds on a gold band. 

Actress Lea Michele confirmed her engagement to boyfriend Zandy Reich in April with this coy selfie featuring her ring designed with jeweller to the A-list, Leor Yerushalmi. 

Michelle Williams is reportedly engaged to financier Andrew Youmans. She was wearing a heart-shaped diamond ring at the Golden Globes this year but hasn't officially revealed the engagement. 

Heiress and former reality TV star Paris Hilton got engaged in fabulous fashion on the slopes of Aspen to actor Chris Zylka. The ring is worth a reported £1.5 million ($2 million).

Über-blogger Chiara Ferragni was proposed to by her musician boyfriend (now fiancé) Federico Leonardo Lucia (known as Fedez). The ring was classic round diamond with a simple band.

At the Met Gala, Anna Wintour's daughter, Bee Shaffer, debuted her engagement ring from fiancé Francesco Carrozzini, the son of Franca Sozzani, the late Vogue Italia editor in chief. Oh, to be a fly on the wall at that super-chic wedding.

Beckham might just be the reigning queen of celebrity engagement rings. Recent reports suggest she has as many as 13 different rings husband David Beckham has bestowed upon her throughout their marriage. The total estimated worth? About £5 million. The first, however, was a three-carat diamond ring worth about £65,000 and was designed by Boodle & Dunthorpe. The one pictured here is an emerald-cut yellow diamond set in yellow gold worth £10,000.

Palermo's cushion-cut yellow diamond from husband Johannes Huebl is estimated to be around three carats, and it is surrounded on the sides by two white diamonds. Huebl proposed to Palermo on New Year's Day in 2014.

The Duchess of Cambridge famously accepted Princess Diana's blue sapphire engagement ring when Prince William proposed to her. The ring boasts a 12-carat central sapphire stone with 14 solitaire diamonds in a halo around it, and it has soared in value from £28,000 to £300,000.

As if being funny and gorgeous wasn't enough, Blake Lively's now-husband Ryan Reynolds proposed to her with an incredible pink oval-shaped 12-carat ring that cost £1.9 million.

Victoria's Secret model, Kate Grigorieva, gave us all a lesson in engagement ring selfies with this beautiful shot of her yellow stone set between two diamond baguettes. The model said yes to footballer boyfriend Anton Shunin this April.

Angelina Jolie's 16-carat engagement ring from Brad Pitt is worth about £200,000, and it took Pitt a year to create it with jeweller Robert Procop. Pitt proposed to Jolie in 2012, and the couple tied the knot in 2014.

Aniston's oval-shaped diamond from Justin Theroux is thought to be at least 10 carats in weight, and it's likely to have cost Theroux a pretty penny: at least £800,000.

Jay-Z gave Beyoncé a gorgeous octagon-cut engagement ring from Lorraine Schwartz back in 2007, and it's now worth around £4 million.

For marriage to rapper Kanye West, Kardashian accepted a more than 15-carat diamond ring valued at a mega £1.1 million.

Prince Rainier III of Monaco gave actress Grace Kelly a stunning 10.5-carat ring from Cartier that was worth £3.1 million.

Ciara got engaged to rapper Future in 2013, but the couple broke up in 2014. Her ring was 15 carats, and it was worth £1.1 million.

How could we forget about TomKat? The couple got engaged in 2005, with Cruise giving Holmes a 5-carat ring that cost £1.1 million.

Ah, Bennifer, the couple that arguably started the super-couple portmanteau trend. For this engagement, Affleck gave J.Lo a gorgeous £2 million, 6.1-carat pink diamond ring from Harry Winston.

When Michael Douglas proposed to Catherine Zeta-Jones in 1999, he gave her a gorgeous 1920s antique by Fred Leighton featuring a 10-carat jewel. It's reported to have cost £800,000.

Nick Cannon gave Mariah Caray a gorgeous diamond ring worth nearly £2 million.

While this was—and still is—the most famous of Jackie Kennedy's jewels (and she had quite the collection), apparently she only wore this piece twice before storing it in a safe. Given to her by Aristotle Onassis, the ring, called the Lesotho III diamond, is worth £2 million.

When J.Lo got engaged to Marc Anthony, she was given an 8-carat ring that cost £3.2 million.

Kim Kardashian married basketball player Kris Humphries back in 2011 after accepting a £1.5 million 16.2-carat ring from Lorraine Schwartz.

Co-designed by husband Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel's engagement ring took inspiration from vintage rings and cost over £100,000. 

Nicole Kidman's engagement ring from country star Keith Urban is unique in that it is not one solitaire stone but rather a Cartier ring of diamonds surrounding her finger. Its estimated value is around £39,000.
