However, it really comes down to the brand and the quality of the makeup that's the biggest difference in what a professional MUA has versus an everyday beauty lover. 

Kate Lee, a Chanel makeup artist, has been working alongside the brand for over 17 years. Over that time, she's worked on the faces of some of the biggest names in Hollywood such as Anne Hathaway, Kaitlyn Dever, Emma Chamberlain, Charli D'Amelio, and other beloved celebrities to create jaw-dropping looks for award shows, television appearances, and red carpets.

I can recall a time, around 2008 I think it was, when black skinny jeans were life. They were one of the coolest things to wear, perfect with the influx of bold-shouldered Balmain rip-off blazers and spiked platform shoes fashion editors favoured, cool with a Breton and ankle boots to get that French-girl look, and great on a night out with a nice top. Like many other basic denim styles, they have become a relied-upon but oft-forgotten part of our wardrobe. It's been a long time since I felt excited about wearing a pair of black jeans, and I'm pretty sure the ones I did own (a nice little cropped flare from Frame) are languishing somewhere in the back of my closet. No more shall you be overlooked, my inky jeans! Because in the past few days, a flurry of celebrity arbiters of taste have decreed the darkest of denim washes back in fashion. Lily Allen has been wearing her black skinnies on multiple nights out with multiple cute tops. Kendall Jenner has both a baggy-fit, straight-leg pair and a flared corduroy style, and they are her trusted partner for crop tops. Bella Hadid has opted in for a super-low-rise, skater-girl vibe, while Emma Roberts has stayed true to the '00s with some ankle-grazing skinnies.

All of the A-listers in this gallery have styled their chosen black jeans very differently and are wearing them in different cities and on different continents. What this variety does showcase is that it's less about a cut and more about the fact that black is back for autumn 2021. So will you take their lead and swap in some jet-coloured jeans this season? With award season drawing to a close, I've taken a minute to stop watching that Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performance at the Oscars to reflect on what exactly it is that means celebrities always look so damn good. Not just on the red carpet but in everyday life too. What precisely is it that sets them apart from us everyday folk and gives them that otherworldly glow? Could it be… money? Yes, sure, absolutely. But besides the kind of inner radiance that can only be acquired with the security of a bank account that never veers toward the red, there's something else—their skin.

Pick a celeb, any celeb, and I can guarantee that whatever beauty look they might be wearing—a green smokey eye, the best hair accessories in the business or a bold coral lip—it's their perfectly prepped skin and seamless base that take their look to the next level.

So in my quest to get some of that A-list skin for myself, I went on the hunt to find out what products celebrities always use to prep, prime and even out their complexions. There were three products that came up time and time again. Keep scrolling to find out what they are.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

After cleansing, a good moisturiser is key for getting the kind of expensive-looking skin—and, unfortunately, sometimes you have to pay for the best results. Coming in at just shy of £50 for a 30ml pot, Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Cream isn't the pricest moisturiser out there, but it's definitely one of the best. Originally created to combat tired-looking skin backstage at fashion week, this glow-boosting cream has since gone on to become something of a cult skincare item.

Emma Roberts, Amy Adams and Shanina Shaik all relied on this moisturiser as the first step in their makeup routines during award season this year while Amal Clooney and Zendaya are also longtime fans. Tilbury believes that the secret to a glowing complexion starts with the skin, which is why this magic pot contains hyaluronic acid, shea butter and rosehip oil—providing skin with long-lasting moisture and a dewy finish.

Lancôme Prep & Matte Primer

If I'm totally honest, a primer is one of those makeup steps that I often forgo in favour of staying in bed for a couple of minutes longer—or taking yet another quick scroll through Instagram in the morning. However, on days that I really want my makeup to last or on evenings out, I'll be sure to apply one. Why? Well, primers really do work.

Both Lupita Nyong'o and Julia Roberts swear by the Lancôme Prep & Matte Primer. For Nyong'o's beautiful Academy Awards makeup look, it was applied just to her T-zone to keep oil at bay on her forehead and nose while letting her natural radiance shine through on her cheeks. Roberts applied it all over her face for a velvety-matte finish that would keep the rest of her makeup in place all night.

Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation

Ah, foundation. As someone who's constantly trying to disguise a breakout or 10, foundation is the one product type that I'm always testing and trialling. Too dewy and I'll be left looking like an oil slick by lunchtime. Too dry and even the highest of coverages will cling to dry blemishes—undoing the hard work to disguise them. I was recently sent the new Hourglass Vanish Liquid Foundation to try and I can safely say that it was love at first application. High coverage, long-wearing and with a natural-looking satin finish.

It would appear that I'm in good company too. Jessica Alba is known to be a fan of Hourglass while Holly Willoughby has been known to regularly use the classic stick formula for her TV appearances. With Kate Moss and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley also on board, I think it's safe to say that this is good skin in a bottle.

Knowing what to wear when you're short takes a lifetime of testing and learning—I would know being 5'1". So I always applaud the pint-size actress Emma Roberts for managing to get the proportions of her outfits—and the shoes to go with them—right every time. Another case in point cropped up on the photo agencies this morning, with the newly blonde star taking to the streets of L.A. looking all kinds of sweet in a striped set of co-ords.

Stripes, like blocks of colour, are often best worn uniformly to look most flattering. So Emma has taken the right tack here to opt for a matching miniskirt and crop top. The short hemlines and thin lines of these striped, retro-looking pieces also help keep your small frame in the frame, rather than being swamped in print. Pint-size actress Emma Roberts is one of our ultimate sources of style inspo for petite fashion girls. The latest sartorial lesson the 5'1" star taught us is how to tackle the statement sock–and-heels trend—one you might assume should be left to the Karlie Klosses of this world. Ankle-length socks can run the risk of making legs look shorter, cutting off the ankle at an unflattering point, but Roberts shows that the secret to making it work is to balance this out with shorts or a skirt falling mid-thigh. Bow down to the king of killer TV, because he’s done it again. Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy returns to FOX this fall with Scream Queens, a new horror-comedy series about twisted sorority sisters, "the Chanels" (Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Ariana Grande, Billie Lourd), and misfit pledges (Lea Michele, Keke Palmer) whose campus is terrorised by a string of spooky murders at the hands of a devil-faced killer. Costume designer Lou Eyrich, a longtime collaborator of Murphy’s, gives you a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the killer fashion closets of this all-star cast of coeds. PS: Nick Jonas plays a frat boy.

Scream Queens is a candy-coated slasher satire set on the fictional campus of Wallace University. The show's creator, Ryan Murphy, even called it a "Heathers meets Friday the 13th" horror comedy. What drew you to the material? “Ryan Murphy pitched the idea to me last fall, and it sounded like a fun, creative project. And the cast lineup was amazing. It was a no-brainer decision!”

You're styling the sorority girls of Kappa Kappa Tau. Did you pull inspiration from the wardrobes of your own pledge past? “I knew nothing about sororities when I began the research process! But then, this is no normal sorority. Ryan wanted all pastels, so that certainly set the tone. I started this project on the heels of AHS: Freak Show, which was 1940s/’50s and faded and bloody. So SQ was so much fun to jump into.”

With an all-star cast leading the series, from Emma Roberts and Lea Michele to Nick Jonas and Jamie Lee Curtis (all hail), how does the Scream Queens cast set itself apart from the ensembles on Glee and American Horror Story? “Glee is the most similar project to SQ, in terms of a young cast. But SQ has a heightened sense of style, both for the Chanels and for the pledges. SQ is unique costume-wise as the costumes are meant to stick out, sometimes in a comical way, rather than simply define a character without pulling focus.”

There's a fair amount of killer (pun intended) dialogue on the show. How do you get each character's style to stand out? “The costumes are not based on reality, clearly, but help to separate the in crowd from the out crowd.”

Judging by their wardrobe, the Chanels subscribe to a very specific uniform of pastels, pearls, and power. What brings it all together? “I would say the colour palette (macarons were my inspiration). We tried to have the Chanels match whenever in a group, to make it really pop and be even more absurd. I would add that the accessories were the signature pieces—always dripping in pearls or rhinestones or earmuffs.”

On to the Kappa Kappa Tau closet: You pretty much brought the mall to a sorority house. What made you think of it, and what trends are hanging on the racks? “Clueless was a big one. Old ads from Juicy Couture. I looked at the trends for Fall 15 and Spring 16.”

Were you able to tell Chanels #1, #2, #3, and #5 apart at first? (Find out what happened to #4 on Tuesday, Septemeber 22!) “There’s a fine line here. It took a while to define it!"

Emma Roberts plays Chanel Oberlin, the deceptively chic (and sometimes scary) president of the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority. How does her wardrobe rule the squad? “Chanel #1 is the queen, so we used feathers, fur, pearls, and big heels—always a notch above, costume-wise.”

Abigail Breslin plays Chanel #5, the calculating, "most likely to be a Stepford" sorority sister. What does she love to wear? “Chanel #5 is more refined, in a pastel sort of way: a touch of class, pencil skirts, form-fitting ensembles with pearls.”

Pop star Ariana Grande returns to the small screen as Chanel #2, the lesser of the four "evil" sorority sisters. She loyally serves her fellow Chanels with a bubblegum sweetness. How does her wardrobe counter her character's personality? “Chanel #2 showed a lot of skin, midriff, short skirts. She’s sassy.”

Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) is the acting consigliere to Roberts’s Chanel #1. Even though she’s wearing earmuffs in almost every scene, something tells us she’s always listening. Describe her look. “Chanel #3 was willing to go a bit goofy—mixing it up with earmuffs, loads of jewels, always overdressed.”

Lea Michele’s character, Hester, has a neck up on the other girls (so to speak). What did you love about her character? “Lea was so game to take Hester to an unrecognizable level of strangeness. We had so much fun playing with this look. It was tricky, as we had both ‘created’ the look for Rachel on Glee and wanted to make sure Hester was unique.”

Was it difficult styling with a neck brace? “The neck brace actually enhanced the look and made it easier to define the character’s costumes.”

Keke Palmer’s character, Zayday, is the brain of the pledge crew. But is she fashion-conscious the way the other girls are? “Ryan wanted Zayday to have style—street style like you see on The Sartorialist. She’s smart, sassy, cool, and could run for school president. Keke wears clothes beautifully, so we had a lot of fun playing with mixing vintage with Topshop and adding a quirky shoe that didn’t match but looked killer on her!”

But short of getting everything tailored, are there any styling tricks out there to help fashion girls on the petite side?
