At Bajaj, stacks were kept simple in the form of cascading silver hoops, whilst over at Germanier, the wow-factor was on full display with chunky sky-blue studs finished with padlock pendants. Expect this mix-and-match approach to be one of the biggest trends of the year, and as your style evolves, this is a look that changes with you.

Style Notes: In keeping with fashion’s maximalist mood, sculptural earrings have been gaining traction. Since returning from the whirlwind that was Copenhagen Fashion Week, I've been ruminating on all the wonderful things I saw, not only on the runways, but on the streets, too. The city has become a real hotbed for emerging trends and cutting-edge designers (hello, Anne Sofie Madsen, Nicklas Skovgaard and OpéraSport!), and being in the thick of it all was not only exciting but exceedingly eye-opening.

Sitting in the front row at the shows gives me unrivalled access to the runway trends in real time, but stepping outside and racing to the next event is also a real visual treat. Copenhagen is full of style mavericks, people pushing fashion boundaries and many an early adopter. And with those same people attending the shows, it's like art imitating life.

As an eagle-eyed stylist and savvy shopper, I've come away with a real hit list of hacks, styling ideas and clever ways to wear clothes and accessories now, which I'm banking on using for my own looks. And because I don't gatekeep, I thought it best to share them with you, too, dear reader. From doubling down on simple accessories to combining delicate and tough fabrics, monochromatic dressing and playing up pop colours, I've gathered seven genius styling hacks I spotted on both the runways and streets of Copenhagen.

The 7 Styling Hacks To Know From Copenhagen Fashion Week

1. Combine Leather and Lace

Style Notes: This pretty trend is set to dominate this spring, and the chicest dressers in Copenhagen have already caught on. Lace is the fabric and finish in question, but more interestingly, I saw it combined with glossy leather for a look equal parts soft and tough. Models walking for The Garment show wore classic tailored trousers, leather bomber jackets and sweet lace foulards tied around their shoulders, whilst at OpéraSport, I spotted a look consisting of a chocolate leather blazer, a white, lace-trimmed dress and bow-embellished pumps—just the kind of look I want to emulate this spring.

On the chilly streets, the best dressers mixed classic black leather outerwear, such as funnel-neck jackets and nipped-in blazers, with hints of bright white lace peeking out from underneath, or delicate stoles wrapped around their shoulders. This charming trend is easy to master: a trusty leather jacket combined with a delicately trimmed skirt, dress or scolloped scarf is the way to do it for spring.

2. Double Your Belts

Style Notes: I thought I was seeing double, and, as it turns out, I was. I couldn't help noticing this styling hack on both the runways and the bitter streets of the city, and not only is it elegant, but it's pretty practical too. Belts worn in pairs cinch knitwear, trousers, miniskirts and flowing gowns, giving a waisted fit and feel.

At Anne Sofie Madsen, two chunky brown leather belts nipped in a black, flowing, sleeveless gown, finished with a cosy fringe scarf and shearling Ugg boots. Over at Paolina Russo, school-uniform-like attire was subverted with low-slung waist belts in contrasting fabrics and colours, for a pop-punk look once pioneered by Avril Lavigne. Street-style stars took things up a notch, threading their double belts through winter-white denim and over the top of colour-pop cardis. Opt for belts in similar hues and cross them over or even double-tuck the ends, or, if you're feeling spicy, choose contrasting colours or textures.

3. Wear All Your White at Once

Style Notes: If you're a coffee drinker, scroll on now, as this vibe won't bode well for you. Copenhagen was giving serious blizzard at the start of the fashion week proceedings, and designers and street-style stars alike took note of the snowy hue that cascaded over the city. I spotted head-to-toe white looks outside every show, with fashion people matching their pillbox hats, capes, fur coats, trousers, skirts, tights, handbags and shoes in the tone Pantone is calling Cloud Dancer for 2026.

On the runways, Holzweiler and The Garment also provided palette cleansers, with frothy and ethereal layered looks all in similarly fresh and chalky hues. This styling technique is simple to imitate: pick all your items in the same colourless hue. Not only does it look extremely opulent, but it takes the mental gymnastics out of getting dressed in the morning.

4. Top It Off With a Chic Hat

Style Notes: I, for one, am already head over heels for this fashion hack, as it just adds a knowingly stylish finish to any look, and my love affair with a certain leopard-print number is already well documented. Trust me: topping your look with a chic hat, may that be a pillbox style, a shearling fisherman shape or a beret, will take your ensemble from zero to 100 in a heartbeat.

The streets of CPH were inundated with both minimalist and maximalist dressers alike, donning weird and wonderful headwear, significantly influenced by the sub-zero temperatures and the bitter winds that take over the Danish capital this time of year. Inside, away from the treacherous weather, designers such as OpéraSport, Rave Review, The Garment and Henrik Vibskov topped runway looks with artful felted hats, shearling designs, nylon beanies, aviator hats and fuzzy trappers, suitably equipped for the autumn/winter 2026 season. However, you can pinch this look now for the very present cold snap.

5. Clash Your Gloves

Style Notes: We've seen an uptick in all things hats, scarves and hosiery for several months, and so the next It item to undergo a style revival is the humble glove. The spring/summer 2026 shows were awash with them in bright colours, satin styles and elongated shapes, and this trend continues to ring true for autumn/winter on the streets and in the designer collections of Copenhagen. To level things up, however, the showgoers in CPH weren't going about their gauntlets gracefully. Instead, they opted for eye-popping colours and clashed them with other accessories to stunning effect.

Nicklas Skovgaard's paper-doll-like models wore pairs in kalidoscopic hues, with each model donning pop-colour, ruched leather gloves that were purposefully at odds with the pastel-toned, satin Hoff trainers. The Garment used cobalt-toned, long leather gloves in an ensemble which also featured zebra-print heeled pumps, for a striking evening look. On the cobbled streets, the sharpest of dressers picked opposing tones on the colour wheel for their gloves and corresponding accessories, favouring cool blues, teals, vibrant violets and royal purples to mix and match their accoutrements. The more clashing, the better!

6. Finish It All With a Statement Earring

Style Notes: Jewellery is always a fabulous finishing touch to a look, and can add a decadent shine to even the simplest of outfits. Good job, then, that I spotted an assortment of great earrings in Copenhagen, a city full of fine jewellery connoisseurs. Predominantly, I noticed silver as the hardware of choice, which gave an elegant, grown-up finish to both runway and street-style looks, possessing a minimalist mood. I spotted attendees adorned in tassel-drop earrings, as well as vintage-feeling square shapes, pairing exquisitely with pillbox hats and statement outerwear.

The designer collections also delivered the goods, tapping jewellery specialists to collaborate on adorning the models for their runways. Most notably, MKDT Studio worked with local jewellers Kinraden to create wearable works of art, such as molten drop earrings, single hoops and dome-like pendants, which swung singularly on the ear.

Herskind collaborated with New York-based jewellery brand Agmes on organic-shaped earrings, mariner link pieces, oversized singular hoop structures and petal-like forms, worn with silver cuffs and pendant necklaces. Take note: silver is the precious metal du jour, but keep it pared-back, simple and chic so as to not overpower it.

7. Toss Your Scarf Backwards

Style Notes: Sometimes, the most effortless of styling hacks is using something totally innocuous and wearing it in an entirely fresh way. Take the scarf. I have seen a steep rise in oversized styles, which are being thrown over shoulders backwards to resemble capes, adding serious drama points to a look.

Both on the icy streets and in the hallowed halls of showspaces, models and influencers alike wore XXL scarves over floor-skimming outerwear and jackets, not only protecting them from the elements, but adding serious swish factor. Plaid checks, fringed football scarves, shearling stoles and even sultry lengths of glossy leather were the fabrics of choice for the autumn/winter 2026 season, and what’s more, the styling options are limitless. Truthfully, I’m not much of a sales shopper. I usually let the frenzied discount season pass me by and stick to a slower, more considered approach throughout the year. When it comes to jewellery, I tend to lean towards the classics—and if I'm honest I rarely stray from my daily go-tos, which consist of a few gold chains, a couple of rings and a pair of small hoops, if I remember. But when summer rolls around, I find I'm more inspired to shake things up. Here at Who What Wear UK, we obviously like to keep tabs on the biggest trends of the season. But we're also keen to analyse and pick apart the trend cycle to decipher which styles have the potential to really go the distance.

Statement metal earrings have long been an easy (and democratic) way of adding instant polish to an outfit. I'm sure we all have that favourite pair of earrings to throw on when we've missed the scheduled hair wash and need to look a little put-together for the office, a date or drinks with the girls. If there's one thing that this fashion editor loves, it's a standout accessory moment. My style is largely simple—I wear a palette comprised of neutrals and the fussiest fabric you'll find me in is white cotton with broderie anglaise. I like to think of my penchant for such pieces as being classic and anti-trend, but even I crave a playful interjection every once in a while. When I feel this need, statement accessories are the first thing I reach for, with jewellery being my favourite to experiment with. So, you can bet that this season's jumbo earrings were immediately on my radar.

First spotted on last year's runways (which I chronicled in detail back in March last year), there was one thing I was certain of: 2025 was going to be the year of big earring energy, and my prophecy has been proven right. From Bottega Veneta to Saint Laurent, larger than life earrings have populated the designer collections. However, though I may report on the luxury goings on in the industry, rather devastatingly, my budget just doesn't allow me to drop £800+ on a pair of earrings. So I decided to be patient. Then, a few weeks ago, when I was on Amazon indulging in my Marvis toothpaste and coffee-table book obsession, I happened upon the perfect oversized teardrop earrings.

Yes, these look like Bottega Veneta, and whilst I'd always advocate for buying the original, as we've established, I simply don't have the budget to do so in this instance. So, I decided to throw caution to the wind and order myself a pair. I choose the gold colourway (these earrings come in many, many colours). At £11, or £9 in the sale, I didn't expect much but, as soon as they arrived, I knew I'd found something special.

Lightweight and with the post perfectly positioned so the teardrop sits higher up on your ear, these look so much more expensive than their price tag. They don't pull on the lobe, making them incredibly comfortable to wear and, although shiny, they aren't garishly so. In fact, their gleam makes them look all the more expensive, in my opinion.

Jewellery is one of the most sentimental things that we can receive as gifts and even buy for ourselves. There's something about a token that lies against our skin, barely parting from us whether we're jumping in the shower or out of bed. (Although, jewellers would advise against washing with particular pieces and sleeping in delicate chains.) As we are teased with better weather, more skin on show often means a focus on the accessories we wear.

So with that in mind, I'm going to share the five main things to look out for and show you how to shop for quality demi-fine jewellery, whatever your price range. Plus, shop my favourite pieces that pass my test.

1. Consider the Difference Between Gold Plated, Vermeil and Gold Filled

Demi-fine jewellery is a broad category, which means that the piece has an element of precious metals. Common brand examples of this would be Monica Vinader, Missoma, some of Pandora's collections, Aligheri and Mejuri. It's important to note here that each piece of demi-fine jewellery is not made the same, and it's wise to pay attention to the terminology. 

Gold plated refers to a thin layer of gold equal to or larger than 0.25 microns on top of a base metal. These are often inexpensive, and the most common example would be copper or brass. They're quite similar to costume jewellery in the sense that they often don't hold a lot of value and are fairly inexpensive compared to gold filled, but of course, you may experience large markups on price. What you're mainly paying for with gold-plated jewellery are the design and the brand name. 

Vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is gold layered on sterling silver, so it's a combo of two precious metals. Therefore, there is more value here. With anything gold, you'll have to replate it every so often, as gold naturally wears away. This can be anywhere around the 12-month mark and above, depending on whether it's a ring compared to earrings (a ring will experience more friction) and the thickness of the gold coating. I have an assortment of gold-plated and vermeil jewellery, and to the naked eye, it's impossible to tell the difference between them. However, you might notice that your gold-plated pieces will lose their lustre faster if it's got a thinner coating.

Gold filled is perhaps the most "valuable" of all three, with solid gold at the very top. This ensures a minimum thickness of the precious metal at 5% of the item's weight. The base metal can vary. You may have noticed that we're discussing gold layers but not the purity of the metals, which leads me to my next tip!

2. Think About the Purity of the Gold

Contrary to Bruno Mars's song about pinky rings being "24-karat magic in the air," it would actually be undesirable to wear something of this purity on your little finger. It's definitely not something to flex about. That's because pure gold means that it's very soft and can bend and wear down easily. Confused? I was too. 

Caratage is the measurement used when talking about how much gold is really in a piece of jewellery. Often, the lowest karat goes from 10 karats to 14 karats, 18 karats, 22 karats and 24 karats. At the bottom end, the amount of gold you're getting is under half of the total metal content. The sweet spot is generally around 18 karats, which is 75% gold. It's hard enough that you can wear it every day and not stress about it too much.

3. Weigh Up If the Piece Is Worth It for You

This is one of the questions we ask ourselves after we find out the price of an item, and a lot of the time, we struggle to rationalise because jewellery is a very opaque industry. If the jewellery is branded, undoubtedly an element of what you're paying for is the brand name, especially if it's an iconic design like Cartier's assortment of It pieces. The markup of jewellery is pretty much in line with fashion, which is around two to three times the cost price for a wholesale figure, then another two to three times for the recommended retail price (RRP). However, the margins can sometimes be even wider than this. It can be a hard pill to swallow because the thing with jewellery, perhaps more so than fashion items, is that a lot of its value is in the materials that it's made of.

4. Look at the Ethical Certifications

Anyone who claims that a jewellery brand is sustainable without substantiation is feeding coins to the greenwashing machine. Even with its benefits, lab-grown gems aren't truly sustainable due to the immense amount of energy it takes to mimic the Earth's core to create a one-carat diamond. But generally, most can agree that it's a less destructive alternative than digging an enormous hole in the ground. Oh, and don't fall for the recycled-metals argument. Very few pieces of jewellery come from metal that is taken directly from a mine, so it's a pretty common practice in general. 

This is why it's important to familiarise yourself with certifications so you're equipped if you're looking to shop jewellery that doesn't just make you look good but also makes you feel good. Fair-mined or certified fair-trade gold is a great place to start. These are separate entities, but both focus on small mines or "artisanal mines" instead of huge operations that use a lot of chemicals like mercury and heavy machinery that's destructive to the surrounding ecosystems. This is not to say that small-scale operations aren't damaging at all. It's just on a lesser scale and often run by cooperatives or families, where individuals are paid fairly. Brands that use gold that's certified this way have to pay a premium, which is invested back into communities. It's a means to give back to the regions whose resources are being extracted. 

Many jewellery companies also have the Responsible Jewellery Council accreditation, which looks at ethical, social and environmental implications across the supply chain for precious metals and gems. Even with this assurance, it's still best to look at the bracelet that you really want in the wider context of gold content, how it's made and complexity of design.

5. Consider What the Jewellery Is For

I touched on this earlier, but the reason you're buying that stunning piece of jewellery matters. Not every design or material is suited for constant wear, especially when it comes to rings. Its hardness (among other things) plays a significant role. The measurement of this is known as Mohs. Most magpies already know that diamond is the hardest stone at level 10, so if affordability isn't an issue, this gem suits most applications.  

But there are others that are suitable for everyday use, and these include sapphire (9), ruby (9) and emerald (8). More budget-friendly stones are topaz, quartz, tiger's eye and onyx for wearability. 

Common gems on the lower end would be pearl (2.5). Materials that are this delicate are better suited for accessories that are less likely to be exposed to surfaces where they may be scratched over time. Things like necklaces or earrings are better suited to softer stones. Another famous example of a high-maintenance stone is that gorgeous green you've seen on Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra designs. It is malachite, and it's very soft.

Earlier this year fashion editors waited with bated breath for Matthieu Blazy's debut collection for Bottega Veneta. Everything You Need to Know About a Helix Piercing

Where Is a Helix Piercing Located?

First things first, where is a helix piercing actually located on the ear? If you didn't know, there are about ten different types of cartilage piercings available, but I decided to go for the helix as it's the most popular choice. "This particular piercing is located at the upper part of the ear and placed in the outer rim of the cartilage,” explains Charlotte Collins, Astrid & Miyu’s piercing mentor and expert. The positioning of the helix allows you to wear a variety of different earrings, such as intricate studs and hoops.

Does a Helix Piercing Hurt?

,"Everybody experiences pain differently so while this may vary from person to person, helix piercings are typically low on the pain scale, with many clients being pleasantly surprised by how quick and easy the procedure is,” says Collins. "Like most piercings, the anticipation is usually worse than the piercing itself.” As somebody who has a pretty low pain threshold, I would rate it as a slightly uncomfortable three out of ten.

How Long Do Helix Piercings Take to Heal?

My piercer explained that the initial healing time for a helix piercing is two to four months, but for it to be fully healed, it can take as long as six to nine months. Healing timelines will vary based on your specific piercing and your body.

How to Look After Your Helix Piercing

"With any piercing, it's best to leave it alone as much as possible,” explains Collins. "This means no touching, twisting or removing the jewellery while it's healing. In terms of applying anything, we recommend spraying it twice a day with a sterile, medical-grade saline (making sure to gently pat the area dry after cleaning or showering with a single-use and non-fibrous paper towel). It's also important to make sure you're not sleeping on any healing piercings and you're returning to your piercer in appropriate timing to downsize the post once the initial swelling has subsided.”

What to Look for in a Practitioner

"Definitely do your research before getting any piercing and ask as many questions as needed,” says Collins. "A reputable piercer will be happy and willing to answer any queries you have. It's important that your piercer is fully licensed and uses implant-grade materials. I'd avoid anywhere that uses a gun as these aren't hygienic and cause a lot of complications–a recipe for disaster."

Is a Helix Piercing Better With a Hoop Or a Stud?

Collins notes it's best to be pierced with 14k solid gold or titanium as these are hypoallergenic and don't contain any nickel. A good piercer will also tell you that you can’t get pierced with a hoop, as they are a lot more susceptible to infection. I went for a tiny 14k solid gold stud, as although it’s slightly more expensive, the jewellery itself won’t degrade over time, even when exposed to sweat, moisture and water.

If there's one thing I've learned in all my years working in fashion, it's that the smallest things can often make the biggest difference. This season, designer fashion seems to fall into two distinct categories. They are either quiet and understated in their appeal—think the likes of Totême, Jil Sander and The Row, which create low-key luxury pieces. Today, the trend is just as standout, with the likes of Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa casually donning impressively large designer-logo earrings for, well, just about every outing. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez keeps things refreshingly on-brand, opting instead for hoop earrings featuring brand names.

The beauty of this trend lies in the fact that, yes, while you can certainly invest in new designer earrings from a plethora of premium brands—think Miu Miu, Prada and JW Anderson—but that there are lots of preloved and vintage designer-logo earrings to consider, too.

While the rise in popularity of joggers and leggings isn't surprising over the past year, the increase in sales of jewellery was a little more interesting. On the face of it, it might seem strange that more are investing in items that are expensive but on closer inspection, it's no wonder. In times when we're being more mindful of how we're spending, shopping becomes a more considered affair. Classic items that fit right into your wardrobe and will last years are worth investing in, rather than flash-in-the-pan trends.

The second reasoning is a little more obvious. As our clothes don't do much showing off right now, where better to focus our personal style that via our jewellery choices? Both Net-a-Porter and Matchesfashion reported a big growth in sales across jewellery last year, and with our working from homes continuing (at least for the near future), it seems unlikely that this consumer behaviour will be slowing down. Jeweller Monica Vindar told me that "earrings were our highest performing category this last year and it was all about statement pieces." Perhaps not so surprising considering you can see earrings (and necklaces) the easiest over Zoom.

While jewellery, in general, is less about trends and more about what works with your wardrobe, there are some new and exciting pieces that are more prevalent than others this coming season. I spoke to a few people about 2021's earrings trends and which pieces to invest in coming up over the next few months. Keep scrolling for more. 

HOOPS

While hoops, in general, are consistently popular, jewellery expert and band and communications consultant Lucy Delius tells me that she can "see the huggy hoop trend moving on to the next level, with riffs and twists on much loved classics, such as a braided or rope hoop or a more chunky first hole earring to complement."

STACKS

Delius also tells me that stacking earrings and full ear styling "creating texture and a real statement" is another way to make your jewellery look very 2021. 

SCULPTURAL 

A more surprising change in spending on jewellery is that "now people are more comfortable with investing in independent designers or a bold, sculptural piece," Delius tells me. 

PLASTIC

Don't be put off by the name, plastic doesn't mean kitsch rubbish. It's rather the overall effect—bold, bright and fun colours or patterns in a lucite or resin.

Gold hoops are one of those items–like straight jeans and a white T-shirt–which in theory should be very easy to find, however in practice it can be difficult to find the perfect one. Fashion influencer Lucy Williams has been collaborating with jewellery brand Missoma for over seven years, and the gold hoops especially from each drop are always a firm favourite with the fashion crowd. The likes of Alexa Chung, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Bella Hadid have all worn these hoops, along with almost every fashion influencer in London. With different styles, and varying sizes and finishes, from every day subtle hoops to larger styles which are more impactful, there's a pair for everyone to wear on repeat.

One of the main goals we have for our wardrobes is to assemble the perfect jewellery capsule. While trends come and go, there's something to be said for classic pieces that'll last you a lifetime. Their life span, however, is completely dependent on how well you look after them. If you're in the position of owning some fine (or even demi-fine) jewellery, it certainly pays to know how to take care of it. However, jewellery maintenance goes way beyond not wearing it in the shower or spraying perfume directly upon it. As such, we asked two industry experts for their at-home cleaning tips.

To create the ultimate how-to guide, we enlisted the help Susan Caplan, founder of Susan Caplan Vintage Jewellery, and a representative from Links of London. With their shared expertise in the jewellery industry, we were able to pinpoint specific care instructions for different types of materials and stones. DIAMONDS

"The best way to clean diamonds is with a mild detergent," reveals Links of London's rep. "You can purchase diamond specific formulas but gentle detergents such as baby shampoo also work wonders. Using it with a soft brush and warm water to gently loosen any dirt—the sparkle will speak for itself. I also recommend avoiding exposing your diamonds to extreme temperatures and activities, so as to help better protect your jewellery."

BRASS

"Brass can tarnish easily," warns Caplan. "That said, tarnished items can also be cleaned quite effectively by using a jewellery silver-dip solution. We've found it to be extremely effective in cleaning tarnished items on most of our costume jewellery, so do so at your own risk. If you leave it in the solution too long, it can have adverse effects."

COLOURED GEMSTONES

"Stones may loosen naturally over time, so it's best to have the settings checked every now and again," suggests Links of London's representative. "Many gemstones can be cleaned in the same manner as diamonds. Others, however, require different care. For example, opals should only be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth."

CRYSTALS

"Sometimes can sometimes succumb to green verdigris," explains Caplan. "This can be extremely tricky to remove in items like crystal pieces, which have lots of small settings. As surprising as it sounds, ketchup is brilliant at removing verdigris and manages to get into hard-to-reach places. Gently brush with an used toothbrush, and then finish by delicately rinsing in room-temperature water. Extra care should be taken if crystals are present, as the crystals can loosen or fall out."

GOLD

"To keep your gold jewellery looking as good as gold can, I suggest regular cleaning with a dedicated gold-polishing cloth," says Links of London's rep. "Infused with cleaners and anti-tarnishing agents, avoid washing it to ensure it's as effective as possible. You can buy them Links of London stores and online."

PEARLS

"Whatever you do, don't use any solutions on pearls," stresses Caplan. "They're incredibly absorbent, and it doesn't take much to damage them beyond repair." Instead, after every wear, wipe your pearls with a soft cloth. "This will help prevent buildup of oils or other substances that may have come in contact with your jewellery throughout the day."

SILVER

"It definitely pays to invest in premium silver pieces. At Links of London, our sterling-silver jewellery is coated with an anti-tarnish solution, but it may still tarnish naturally over time. To recapture its original brilliance, clean with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth."

WATCHES

Watches are one of the pieces many of us wear daily, but how often do you clean yours? With unavoidable sweat buildup, we advise taking a couple of minutes every evening to clean it properly. With a soft, clean cloth, wipe the inside of the band, and wipe gently around the case back—this will remove excess moisture and lotion buildup. Caplan also recommends storing your watches separately, as the glass can be easily scratched. "In addition, make sure all lay flat otherwise the joints can get twisted and break," she reveals.

When VB took to Instagram yesterday to share a behind-the-scenes snap of her on set, there was one thing in particular that stole the show. Or should I say five things? No, it wasn't those under-eye patches that she was using to prep her skin (although, more on those later) but the dainty ear piercings adorning her right ear—five in total. Having never been privy to such a close-up look at the inside of Victoria's ears (obviously) I'm not sure if these piercings are new additions to Beckham's collection or if she's had them for a while. Either way, I'm totally obsessed—and so was everybody else in the comments.

Although Beckham's Instagram post was actually intended to tease the upcoming launch of Victoria Beckham Beauty (rumoured to be landing later this year as part of her A/W 19 collection), it was VB's ear piercings that caught everyone's attention. From "obsessed with your piercings" to "ear inspo," there were hundreds of comments singing the praises of Beckham's ear jewellery. But what exactly are the piercings that VB has?

Luckily, Maria Tash—the celebrity ear piercer of choice—took to the Instagram comments to spill the beans. "The upper left is in the helix, upper right is the forward helix (or 'earhead'), and the one in the middle of the ear is a conch piercing," explained Tash.

Beckham has two lobe piercings in her right ear and took to Instagram Stories last December to reveal three lobe piercings in her left ear, which she decorated with studs from Lizzie Mandler too.

As for those eye patches Beckham was wearing in her Instagram post? Well, there's a chance that they might be the 111Skin Celestial Black Diamond Eye Mask—after all, celebrities like Rosie HW and Priyanka Chopra swear by the brand's sheet masks for prepping skin before big events. Or could it be a sneak peek at what's to come from Victoria Beckham Beauty? We'll have to wait for autumn to find out.

Next up, nine cool nail designs I’m actually going to try this summer.

Call me a fashion-editor cliché, but I'll always make an exception for Chanel. I tend to avoid the more obvious designer logos, but when it comes to the fashion house's unmistakable interlocking C earrings, I say the bigger, the better.

Turns out that I'm not the only one with a love of the brand's ostentatious jewellery. I spoke to two of the biggest online sellers of vintage and preowned clothing, and it revealed an increase in the sale of Chanel earrings by almost double proportions since this time last year. That's a lot of love for something that's been continuously pretty popular since Coco first introduced her strings of pearls in the mid-'30s and Karl Lagerfeld introduced loud gold pieces in the '80s.

Vestiare Collective found that in March, sales for the earrings were up by 40% on the year before. Open for Vintage, a site that Kim Kardashian West uses, has also seen a similar trend. In the last six months, Chanel jewellery sales have made up just over 50% of all of the site's jewellery sales. But it's the Chanel earrings that have made up 15% of all jewellery sales across all categories and brands, with people searching "Chanel CC logo" in particular.

Honestly, I'm not totally surprised that gaudy '80s jewellery is back in. Look at the biggest S/S 19 trends and you'll see that Chanel is fully embracing the decade by sending its iconic chain jewellery back down the runway, along with shoulder pads and bold logos. But that's not the only reason there's been an increase in demand.

I also spoke to Susan Caplan, the UK's market leader for vintage jewellery, about the trend. "Thanks in part to the growing profile of vintage jewellery and conscious purchasing habits, I've noticed demand for these has been steadily increasing over the last 10 years, but we're also in the midst of a particular spike right now," she says.

The combination of wanting to invest in items that last, opting for vintage over new, as well as tapping into a current trend is a winner. If like me, you're thinking about purchasing some classic Chanel earrings, there's one piece of advice Susan told me: Check the weight.

"Of course, a manufacturer's stamp is another indicator," advises Susan. "But not all authentic Chanel pieces carry a stamp, so actually, the first thing I look at is the weight [ed. note—it should feel heavy in your hand], together with craftsmanship."

It's not uncommon to see someone with an ear full of piercings these days. What was once a trend has become the norm, especially among fashion girls, but that doesn't really mean that you should fill your ear with holes with no rhyme or reason. There's undoubtedly an art to piercing, and few people understand it as well as Brian Keith Thompson, the owner and piercer of the wildly popular Body Electric. I visited the Melrose Avenue shop on a recent trip to Los Angeles for a third piercing in my ear, and based on the crowd gathered in the waiting area that afternoon, it's very apparent that Thompson has quite the following. 

Since Thompson has been in the piercing business for decades and sets so many piercing trends, who better to get the scoop on the piercing mistakes he sees most frequently? Piercing is clearly a permanent thing, and it's best to be well informed going into it, so consider this required reading if you're in the market for a new one.

Mistake #1: Sporadic piercing placement

"A lot of people think piercing is just cause and effect. You go see your piercer, and that's it. But piercing is dynamic. There are two sides to piercing: one is the physical act of getting a piercing; it's the needle going through the body. The most important part—well, both are equally important, actually—but the other side is the actual decoration. Most of the time, I cringe when I see someone come in and they've spent a buttload of money and their ear is just not decorated. It's just like someone didn’t really give them time, didn't really care, and just placed the piercing sporadically like they were just shooting at a barn in the dark with a shotgun. Just no rhyme or reason. Now, I'm all for the constellation piercings. But even though they're sporadic, there is a reason I put things in certain places... it's not just the act of decorating; it's putting jewellery in certain locations. Not all jewellery should go in certain areas. And a lot of times when clients come in … I'll actually have them take out misplaced piercings and then I'll redo them."

Mistake #2: Using rubbing alcohol

"I've been seeing a lot of kids coming in [after] getting pierced [and they're] telling them to clean their new piercings every day with alcohol. I don't understand that. Because if you grab your bottle of alcohol—rubbing alcohol—and you read the warnings, the first warning is, 'Not for prolonged use.' It’s for single applications. The body cannot heal if you're using alcohol every day. The only thing you need is soap and water. Mild soap, not even an antibacterial soap. My soap of choice is Dr. Bronner's—Baby Bronner's (£20). But Cetaphil (£9) is great too."

Mistake #3: Not cleaning your jewellery

"My third would be seeing people come in and their ears [are] just extremely dirty. And that's from body oils, products that we use on our body, hair products, lotions, soaps. All this stuff starts building up, and it just looks like gunk on the jewellery itself. So what I'll do is—I did with this client the other day: I took a piece of jewellery out of her conch. I didn't pierce it; it had been pierced for a couple of years, and you couldn't even see the gemstones any more. Anyhow, I ultra-soniced it, tuned it up, cleaned it up, put it back in for her. I showed her a mirror and you should have seen her, she just lit up like a Christmas tree. She was so surprised she just couldn’t believe it. It's not just visually bad, but it's also not sanitary. So clean your jewellery please."

Mistake #4: Wearing dated jewellery

"Another one is, I'm seeing a lot of clients around my age, 40-something, and they're still wearing a lot of these old captive bead rings from the '90s. Especially the stainless steel ones: 16-gauge, 14-gauge stainless-steel captive bead rings. No, thank you. Now there are people out there who love them. Hey, you do you—go do your thing. But that's not my style, that old-school stuff. I'm trying to help my clients. I'm trying to show them another way and close that door forever. That big, bulky, stainless steel jewellery just isn't doing it anymore."

Full disclosure: I write this piece on the different types of ear piercings as someone who only has their ear lobes pierced. Sure, I have three on each ear, and yes, my first of three ear piercings was done at Claire's Accessories when I was 10. Okay, I also had my last piercing done there. (Yes, it was recently—I'm there for the nostalgic Y2K beauty vibes, OK?)

While I love experimenting with earring trends, especially multiple lobe piercing combinations—I adore a classic stud, huggie earring and larger chunky hoop earring combination—I'm tempted to get other areas of my ears pierced. But beyond the lobes, I'm somewhat clueless about what an ear piercing entails, the pain levels, prices, or even what kind of jewellery suits which area. While I love keeping up with celebrity beauty advice, I've never followed in the footsteps of piercing aficionados like Scarlett Johansson or Victoria Beckham, who both have multiple ear piercings, and experimented elsewhere.

So when this article was assigned to me to write, I felt it was the perfect time to step up my knowledge on all the different types of ear piercings out there and learn my tragus piercings from my helix piercings.

Beyond the most popular styles, I've learned that there are many types of ear piercings available. Among them, they have different piercing placements, different levels of pain (more on that below) and certain tips for aftercare too. To find out more, I reached out to three very knowledgeable ear piercers to give us the lowdown on all the different types of ear piercings. But first, there are a few pointers you should know about before considering an ear piercing.

How Painful Is an Ear Piercing?

"When it comes to piercings, pain is relative," says Yasmin Jabbar, ear piercer for Matilde. "Everyone has different pain thresholds and clients rarely have the exact same experience for most piercings," she adds.

"In the grand scheme of things, the actual piercing itself takes a second or two, so it's absolutely manageable and worth it! I would describe it more as a hot sensation rather than pain, but if you are feeling nervous or worried about the pain, let your piercer know so that they can support you and explain the process to you to put you at ease."

How Should You Prepare for an Ear Piercing?

"In case you're uncertain about the earring design or type of piercing you'd like, feel free to book a consultation before your appointment or ask any questions on the day itself," says Svetlana Hristova, head of piercing at Lark & Berry. "A brief conversation with your piercer before the procedure can work wonders, particularly if you're feeling nervous."

It's also the ideal time to assess your ear anatomy, and what piercings you might want to consider in the future too.

"The next step is to go to a reputable piercer and ask them whether the piercings you want will work with your ear anatomy. Let them know what future piercings you're planning so that they can pierce with that in mind," says Laura Bond, founder of Laura Bond.

"If you've only got your lobes pierced, then starting with a second or third lobe can be a good way to ease into the curated ear trend. Flat piercings and tragus piercings are also very cute and can take less time to heal than the helix or conch," she says.

As for the day itself, there are things you can do to make the experience as seamless and pain-free as possible. "Taking pain relief can help alleviate discomfort to a certain extent, but be aware that some painkillers may thin the blood and cause bleeding during the piercing process," says Hristova, and ensure you disclose any medications or health conditions on the consent form before your piercing.

"It's essential not to get pierced on an empty stomach or after consuming alcohol," she says. "Fill out the consent form attentively, providing accurate and thoughtful responses to all questions."

To prevent infections or irritations, she also recommends avoiding getting pierced before embarking on a long journey by train or aeroplane. "Keep in mind that being in good health when getting pierced is crucial for a swift and problem-free healing process," she says.

"Refrain from getting a piercing if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have recently undergone other procedures such as surgery or getting a tattoo in the same area."

What Aftercare Advice Should You Follow After Getting an Ear Piercing?

You will want to diligently follow your practitioner's aftercare advice on the day to help your piercing heal well and avoid any issues, regardless of the type of ear piercing you get. "The healing phase is just as crucial for achieving optimal results as the piercing procedure itself," says Hristova.

"Begin using the aftercare lotion on the same day as your appointment, and we recommend doing so twice daily (morning and evening) for at least four weeks. Lobe piercings tend to heal more quickly than cartilage piercings, but there's no such thing as over-cleaning."

As well as keeping the area clean, you'll want to avoid touching your new piercing unnecessarily. "It's important to note that excessive touching or cleaning the piercing with unwashed hands can sometimes cause issues. To ensure a smooth recovery, avoid swimming pools for two weeks, although sea water is acceptable," says Hristova. You'll also want to avoid saunas and steam rooms for around four weeks.

And don't forget, you should avoid changing the jewellery in your piercing until it has fully healed. "This can compromise the health of your piercing and can lead to an infection," says Jabbar. By following these steps, you'll be on your way to a successful healing process.

The piercing technique: As for the piercing technique, a needle is the best way to go. "Using a needle rather than a gun is important when piercing ears because it is much safer and more precise," says Bond. "Needles are designed specifically for piercing and provide more accuracy, less trauma to the tissue, and a better healing environment due to their sharpness and small size. Guns, on the other hand, can cause trauma to the tissue and increase the risk of infection."

2. Floating Lobe Piercing

"If you wear earplugs or in-ear headphones, this might not be the piercing for you unless you don't mind taking a break whilst your piercing heals," says Jabbar. "The tragus is an anatomy-dependent piercing, so you will need to consult with your piercer to make sure you can have this piercing."

There is a misconception that a tragus piercing may be painful due to its thickness, says Hristova. "In reality, since there are no nerve endings present, you will experience a sensation of pressure from the needle rather than actual pain," she says. "Some mild swelling and soreness may follow, but this typically subsides within a few days."

4. Flat/Scapha Piercing

Name of piercing: Flat (it also goes by the name of a flat helix or scapha)

Where on the ear: The flat surface at the top of the ear

Healing time: 6-12 months on average

Pain scale: 6/10

5. Forward Helix Piercing

Name of piercing: Forward Helix

Where on the ear: At the front of the top of the ear, right where your baby hairs sit

6. Helix Piercing

Name of piercing: Helix

Where on the ear: On the outer edge of the top part of the ear

Healing time: 6-12 months on average

Pain scale: 5/10

Piercing technique: This piercing is done with a needle. " If you wear a cycling or motorcycling helmet, this might not be the right piercing for you unless you don't mind taking a break for a while. Ski-ing would also be a no-no for at least a few months," says Jabbar.

"Be cautious not to change the earring or downsize the bar prematurely, as the cartilage inside may appear healed but can still be damaged," says Hristova. "Patience is essential to avoid infections from improper cleaning routines or excessive touching and movement of the earring. It's important to never leave your helix piercing without an earring, even for short periods, as the healing process will begin immediately and the hole may close up overnight," she says.

7. Industrial Piercing

Name of piercing: Industrial piercing

Where on the ear: An industrial piercing is essentially a forward helix and standard helix piercing joined together

Healing time: 6-12 months on average

Pain scale: 5/10

Piercing technique: This area is pierced with a needle. "The industrial piercing is an anatomy-dependent piercing. I prefer piercing the forward helix and standard helix separately with labrets to allow them to heal a lot easier, fitting the bar or chain at a later date," says Jabbar.

8. Auricle Piercing

Name of piercing: Auricle (or Lower Helix)

Where on the ear: On the outer edge of the middle part of the ear

Healing time: 6-12 months on average

10. Daith Piercing

Where on the ear: Quite far inside of the ear, the daith small part of cartilage above the ear canal, between the rook and tragus.

Healing time: 9-12 months on average

Pain scale: 8/10

Piercing technique: This area is pierced with a needle. "The daith is an anatomy-dependent piercing. From experience, I would say on average only 50% of people wanting a daith piercing actually have the optimal anatomy," says Jabbar. "If you wear earplugs or in-ear headphones, this might not be the piercing for you unless you don't mind taking a break whilst your piercing heals."

11. Conch Piercing

Name of piercing: Conch (outer conch is just a varied placement)

Where on the ear: Inside the centre of the ear

Healing time: 4-6 months on average

Pain scale: 4/10

Piercing technique: This area is pierced by a needle. "The conch piercing is one of the easiest cartilage piercings to heal, but if you're not quite sure that you want to commit just yet, no problem! Test it out with an ear cuff," says Jabbar.

12. Orbital Piercing

Name of piercing: Orbital

Where on the ear: An orbital piercing can be in a variety of placements. An orbital piercing is when you have two separate but parallel piercings that are connected with a ring. It is very similar to the industrial piercing except it’s with a ring and not a barbell.

Name of piercing: Anti-Tragus

Where on the ear: Below the tragus, parallel to where your first lobe would sit

In our weekly Monday morning meeting, I noticed that over half of the Who What Wear team was wearing statement pearl earrings, and all of them were from the high street. These aren't neat Stepford-style strings of pearls, but big chunks of (faux) freshwater pearl with uneven surfaces that make each one feel more unique.
