Maybe it’s the true crime podcasts I listen to while cooking dinner or the CIA-level sleuthing skills women seem to be born with, but I am particularly skilled at ID’ing the beauty products celebrities secretly use. But some stars don’t care—or maybe they’re just real—and post the occasional unpaid, non-sponsored product pic that reminds us that stars are just like us. I've been lucky enough to get my makeup done by professional makeup artists a few times in my life. Whenever they ask if I have an ideal lash look, I practically shout, "Kendall Jenner!" I've always loved how long, fluttery and natural-looking her lashes look, regardless of whether she's snapping a selfie at home or walking a red carpet in full glam.

In the past, I've toyed with the idea of getting lash extensions to mimic the look, but I prefer a low-maintenance routine with minimal beauty appointments. Plus, I like to champion the no-mascara trend from time to time. So I turn to mascara.

Recently, I tried a new mascara. It's one that Kendall Jenner reportedly uses and loves, and I can see why. Its thin, stiff brush and flexible formula give me long, Jenner-esque lashes. L'Oréal Paris Extensionist Mascara

For context, I've only ever found two mascaras that help me achieve Jenner-esque lashes. The first is Refy's Lash Sculpt Lengthen and Lift Mascara (£22). It's been my go-to off-duty mascara for years thanks to a curved brush that lifts and separates my lashes and a flexible formula that never looks clumpy or obvious. It's the perfect "no-makeup makeup" mascara.

The second is another drugstore product—Maybelline's Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara (£13). Multiple celebrity makeup artists have recommended it to me, including Kelli Anne Sewell and Alexandra French. It's lengthening, lifting and curling, and it doesn't flake or clump, ever.

The Verdict

Needless to say, I was impressed by this L'Oréal mascara. The formula is thin, buildable, and flexible, so it doesn't clump, flake or get crusty throughout the day (IYKYK). The best part, though, is the brush. It's a short, dense, plastic brush (my favourite kind!). It distributes just the right amount of mascara on my lashes, sweeping up and out for exceptional lift and length.

The effect lasted all day, through a busy, 14+-hour workday. And when it came time to wash it off, I didn't need a thick, oily makeup remover. The washable formula came right off with my normal cleanser. Easy on, easy off.

I've worn it nearly every day since I first tested it. Now, I'm happy to announce that I've found my third go-to mascara for achieving Jenner-level lashes.

Even as a beauty editor who has tried almost every lip liner going, many of them have left me pretty disappointed. Some are too dry and drag across my skin, and others are just too creamy to have any real lasting power. I also don't like the idea of paying upwards of £20 on a luxury lip liner. More often than not I end up choosing the wrong shade anyway (I always end up with something way too warm-toned or just too dark).

So, one day I made my way down to my local shop to find a trusty drugstore lip liner. As I was crawling to my next payday, I challenged myself to find one for under £5 and came across Rimmel Lasting Power Lip Liner in Cappuccino (£4)—the last one on the shelf. Little did I know I'd just found my holy-grail lip liner, and since then I've never looked back.

The Shade and Formula

Cappuccino is a true cool-toned brown. I often find most brown lip liners lean too warm or too dark for my complexion, but this one adds the right amount of definition without looking too harsh. As someone with light skin, it's a good neutral brown that would also suit medium and tan complexions. However, if you have a deeper complexion, it may look more natural. If you want something more bold, I've heard the shade Brownie Pie (£4) is a good alternative.

As for the formula, it's really easy to apply. It's creamy and glides effortlessly onto the lips. If you're going for a contoured lip or blurred look, it's easy enough to blur into your lips, but equally, if you're looking for a precise line this lip liner can achieve it as well. It's so fool-proof, in fact, that I carry it as my main lip liner in my handbag as it's so easy to use and I know it pairs well with anything I apply on top—usually a lip gloss or a lip oil.

While I'm not someone who typically overlines my lips (mostly because I'm truly awful at it), this shade acts as a good contour if you're wanting to go outside the lines slightly to make your lips look more full and plump. It's also easy to sharpen, so you can always get a precise nib. What's not to love?

I really love the cool-toned shade of this lip liner, which I usually pair with a clear gloss or a tinted lip oil. But what's also great about it is that, lightly applied, it leans more pink, but if you want more intensity it can be layered up for a '90s-inspired brown. Whatever your preference, it applies and blends like a dream, and I like that it gives my lips definition without looking too 'done'.

As for its longevity, this is a really long-lasting lip liner for the price. Even after eating and hours of wear, it lasts. I'd definitely look at topping up throughout the day, but there is no chance of this disappearing into thin air.

After speaking with the Rimmel team, I found out that the lip combo everyone rates with the Cappuccino lip liner is the Rimmel Thrill Seeker Glassy Gloss in Coco Sugar (£9). And I have to agree, I love this clear gloss on top of the liner. It adds a glassy yet non-sticky sheen and deliciously smells like jelly pick 'n' mix sweets.

The Verdict

I can easily say that this lip liner will be a forever staple in my makeup bag, as well as my main bag for on the go touch-ups. Not only is the lasting power incredible, but it actually lasts a lot longer on my lips than some of the more expensive lip liners I've tried. The Cappuccino shade is versatile enough for day-to-day and suits most skin tones too. Overall, if you want a great lip liner I'd highly recommend it. I'd easily pay four times the price for this affordable formula, but the fact it costs less than an actual cappuccino is even better.

My new autumn favourite! I'd describe this as a foundation-skincare hybrid option, thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid. Glossy enough to create a seamless finish that glows with coverage, it makes my skin feel bouncy, and the serum-esque bottle and pipette applicator make the application process feel like an extension of my morning skincare routine. I would like to see a wider undertone option, however.

2. Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops 

It was a great day for this beauty editor when I discovered these drops—a product that feels genuinely innovative. This foundation applies like a light facial oil and yet somehow blends out (preferably using fingers) into a soft-coverage, dewy foundation. The brainchild of celebrity makeup artist Gucci Westman, I found it easy to shade-match, but due to its unusual texture, it's one that I'd advise testing in real life to make sure it's right for you.

This lightweight, easy-to-build foundation surprised me with its seamless coverage and adaptability. It’s also a fantastically breathable option for anyone who doesn't typically like the feel of foundation but also isn't into the full "Glossier" look (skin-first, barely there). My only note is that I'd like to see this in a bottle about three times the size, but given its ultra-light yet even coverage, I won't protest too much.

2. Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation 

To say I was wowed by this foundation from Lady Gaga's makeup brand would be the understatement of the year. I had heard great things about its flexible texture and balanced shade, and it not only applied like silk, but is arguably one of the truest colour matches I've found in years. Truly, a wonderful find.

3. Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Foundation

First, a warning: This is a very runny liquid formula, so it's not for the overzealous, messy make-up applier. I'm talking about myself here—even after almost a year of use, I still get it everywhere. However, don’t let the consistency put you off, because this foundation gives a dreamy, thin base that covers all dark marks and acne scars without an orange tinge in sight. I opt for a hybrid fingertip-and-brush approach to application, and this seems to be the best method. The case for this foundation joining my daily makeup rotation was made by my sister, who couldn't stop complimenting my skin the first time I wore it.

4. Trinny London BFF De-Stress

This serum foundation is one of the more exciting options for dark skin tones. Best applied with fingers, it leaves skin with unbelievably lightweight coverage and a truly "lit from within" glow. Despite being positioned as a tinted skincare option, I found it to be perfect for creating an even-toned base for the rest of my make-up. Don't let the curated shade range fool you; I was able to find two options that blended undetectably with my skin—something that even some of the bigger brands have yet to master. The only thing to note is that this isn't one I'd reach for when 24-hour coverage is needed.

5. La Mer Soft Fluid Foundation Long Wear SPF20 

I know, I know—but the hydration and skin finish provided by this foundation more than makes up for the price. Granted, this one will be firmly for special-occasion makeup, but its performance is impressive, and so is the shade range. With the likes of La Mer on board, I can now honestly say that shade-wise, there are options for all, and even less of an excuse for brands that don't meet the mark.

6. Makeup by Mario Surrealskin Foundation 

This foundation came on my radar via rave internet reviews. The formula dries down slightly matte with a silky finish, and when I tried it for over a week I was blown away by its weightless feel and neutral undertone. I can't say I was completely surprised though; Makeup By Mario is responsible for my favourite lip products. This is the thickest of the skin-like options though, so be mindful when pumping, because a little goes a very long way.

Despite my scepticism over viral foundations, after trying this for a first-impressions review earlier this year over on the Who What Wear UK TikTok, Givenchy's Prisme Libre Foundation has become my go-to for going out-out. Its seamless colour match will be welcomed by dark-skinned foundation wearers, but it's definitely one that you'll need to use both a primer and setting spray with.

2. Kosas Revealer Skin Improving Foundation SPF 25 

Balmy in texture and with a smooth finish, this is a full-coverage option that still manages to look and feel like skin. My only con is that as with many SPF-infused foundations, a lot of people could be all-too tempted to forgo an actual SPF underneath, which wouldn't leave your skin adequately protected.

3. Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation 

This foundation from Selena Gomez’s beauty brand more than delivers on its promise of major coverage payoff with minimal product. Just a few swipes gives you the kind of soft, matte finish you just have to see to believe, and one that's often hard to find without veering into the dreaded ashy territory. With a good setting powder in hand, this is a great dark-skin option.

4. Suqqu The Cream Foundation 

This luxurious foundation from underrated beauty brand Suqqu feels like your favourite night cream—not too sticky and with a big moisture payoff—blended with a full-coverage concealer. My biggest issue is that it comes in a pot with a small applicator, which I ignore in favour of my fingers, making for a messy makeup moment. However, the buildability of this foundation makes it worth having on your radar.

5. Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blur + Smooth Tint Stick 

Putting aside the now-familiar fanfare over Fenty's extended foundation shade range (even though launching as a new beauty brand with 50 shades is still very impressive, even years later), the brand's newest long-wearing formula is a great example of why people keep returning for more. I love accessible, easy-to-use makeup, and this foundation is definitely one I'll reach for again, especially during my period when my skin is oiler and more textured.

6. Il Makiage Woke Up Like This Flawless Base Foundation

I've yet to hear anything negative from anyone I've recommend this Il Makiage foundation to. Known for its ingenious AI shade-matching technology which produces seamless results, it gives a truly lit-from-within glow. Since discovering it in 2021, I've found it to be perfect for everyday wear and fully capable of creating an even-toned base for the rest of my makeup routine. Its only downside is its dry-down time—it sets faster than most foundations, so buff first, admire later.

7. Milk Makeup Flex Foundation Stick

I'm not usually a huge fan of stick foundations because I like to limit the amount of tugging and pulling I do to my face. However, this creamy formula glides so smoothly and easily that it was enough to make me reconsider. I’ve loved NYC-based brand Milk Makeup for years thanks to its Black-girl-friendly bronzers, glittery shadows and lipglosses, and now I can add this foundation to the list. Four swipes (forehead, chin, both cheeks) is enough to create a medium-to-full-coverage look that doesn’t look too cakey. It's a winner.

Since I was young, getting ready on Eid day has been one of my absolute favourite times of the year. Eid-Al-Fitr follows the month of Ramadan, which is a month of worship, self-reflection, community and fasting. I'll be honest: I don't do my nails often. I usually keep them bare and add nail polish here and there, but my nails stay simple for the better part of the year. But when summer rolls around, I'm immediately in the mood to get playful and start to save a plethora of bright and fun manicure designs, summer nail art and summer nail trends to my Instagram Saved folder.

I'm already starting to think about which designs or summer nail colours I may want to try out. There are so many options out there—just a scroll on Instagram (and TikTok, with the nail transition videos) can lead to endless possibilities. While my love of luxury skincare knows no bounds (my current skin routine totals an eye-watering £669), when it comes to makeup, I'm a little more restrained with my product choices. One might say that when your makeup application skills are as basic as mine, then it makes no sense to splurge on fancy formulations anyway, but I'd argue that my love of high-street makeup actually comes from the fact that there are so many affordable products out there that rival the quality and results of their more expensive counterparts. So why spend more when you really don't have to? 

Case in point: Maybelline. When I was a teenager, it was pretty much a beauty rite of passage to own something from this iconic high-street brand—most notably, of course, its Dream Matte Mousse Foundation, which definitely earns a spot in my throwback beauty hall of fame. And with over 100 years in the beauty industry under its belt, there's no doubting that Maybelline knows a thing or two about formulating a great beauty product. However, since the brand was so weaved into the fabric of my early beauty experience, it's no surprise that in recent years, I've overlooked it in favour of more exciting new launches and buzzy Instagram brands.

Honestly, there were so many Maybelline products that I realised I still reach for on a regular basis as well as plenty of others I have rekindled my love for.

After all, who wouldn’t want to learn some new application tips from Alexa Chung's makeup artist or try new cult products? In truth, finding fun yet easy makeup looks during this time can be a simple way to cultivate a little delight in your day. Doin' the Bare Minimum

Doing your makeup doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have a full face. No matter your makeup routine, it should always bring you joy. Mercedes Malana says, "Taking time for myself to put makeup on is a moment of self-care and almost therapy to me.” But she continued, "I love natural, effortless looks because my mum taught me less is more.”

If you’re looking for an easy makeup look that’s a little bit bolder, look to our very own editor Anna LaPlaca. As she told us, "My makeup here is inspired by that quintessential French-girl look, which is effortless and romantic, and surprisingly easy to re-create. It's anchored by bold, fluffy brows, a classic red lip, and a subtle flick of winged eyeliner.”

Our editors aren’t the only ones who swear by the power and leisure of applying a bold lip. Kellie Brown is also a fan. As she told us, "I love this look because it’s simple and easy to do but impactful. It’s fresh-faced and a bit of pow all at once.”

Perfecting your cat eye takes practice, but once you become a pro, it’s one of the easiest makeup looks. Don’t believe us? As Katie Cung told us, "This is my go-to flawless look; the crisp cat eye makes me feel super confident and like I can achieve anything!”

Once you’ve mastered your cat eye and want to have a little fun, we suggest trying Erin Kean’s neon pink cat eye. As she told us, "I find bright colours always elevate my mood, whether it be a neon pink eyeliner or a bold red lip. Something about colour does wonders for your confidence.”

If pink isn’t your colour, maybe this blue cat-eye look from Macarena Nieto is more your speed? As she told us, "It’s the simple things that bring joy,” and we couldn’t agree more.

In fact, you can create the same bold makeup look that’s more versatile with a metallic eye shadow, like Tash Baker. In Baker’s words, "a pop of a metallic colour all over the eyelids is versatile as ever—it can be paired with a monochromatic look or to add a statement to a more neutral look.”

Easy makeup inspiration can come from anywhere, and Jess Cheng is proof of that. As she confessed, "This green eye shadow look brings me joy because it is inspired by my favourite meme of Kermit the Frog falling off a building.” Memes inspiring makeup? Here for it. There's been countless times in my life where Rimmel has had my back. It's like that ride-or-die best friend that you can count on in any situation. There's the time when I found myself at Heathrow airport, staring into my clear plastic bag and realising that my lip gloss, mascara and eyeliner didn't make the cut. Who came to my rescue? Rimmel, of course. Then there's the Rimmel lip gloss that's been a staple in my collection for most of my life. It had a rebrand and I remember sobbing between the shampoos and sandwiches in Boots because I couldn't find my shade. 

But after I got seduced by the brands residing outside of the high street, Rimmel and I had a brief hiatus in our friendship. You know how it is. Well, that was until I picked up some new lipsticks recently and spotted all kinds of glorious new additions from the brand. So I thought it was about time that we re-commit to each other and what better way for me to do that, than to try on all of Rimmel London's products? 

I decided to put all of the products to the test, including the ones that I've never tried before, such as foundations and concealers. I was really curious to see how the brand had evolved over the years and if these all-for-under-a-tenner products would make the cut. Here are my findings...

Rimmel Lasting Matte Foundation in Soft Chocolate

Let's not beat around the bush here, I'm a foundation snob and I'm not afraid to admit it. I honestly can't remember the last time I picked up a foundation for under £10. Believe me I've tried, but the shades (or lack thereof) have been suspect and I just couldn't find the coverage to best suit my needs.

So, this foundation took me by surprise, so much so that I sent pictures to my group chat to co-sign that it did indeed look as spectacular as I thought. This matte foundation is the truth. It's the first time I've ever worn a foundation without needing to use a setting powder. It stayed in place all day, with its true to life shade and mousse-like formula. I'm obsessed and about to buy at least 5 more.

Rimmel Lasting Matte Concealer in Mocha

Go ahead, zoom in on this picture. This is 7 hours after I applied this concealer to my under eyes and there's not a pesky crease, smudge or any fading in sight. I didn't touch up with any powder throughout the day either. The formula is super easy to apply with the wand applicator and works well when blended in with a sponge. But, it's the longevity that's got me hooked as it kept my under eyes looking bright throughout a day of errands. Consider me hooked. 

Rimmel Oh My Gloss! Lip Gloss in Snog

I've been rocking Rimmel's lip glosses for years and they're consistently spot on. When you find a good gloss, it's wise to stick with it. I'm not really into glitter glosses but this one gives the absolute best shine, with enough colour payoff. I wore this all day and topped up a few times and it kept my lips really soft and hydrated, which a lot of lip glosses fail to do.

Blush is one step in my makeup routine that I've never made time for. It's never felt like a necessity and I'd rather spend my time highlighting my cheekbones into the most chiselled specimens around. So, once I tried this palette I just shook my head in the mirror, because it's like my complexion had been screaming out for this much needed dose of colour. The perfect deep berry shade for my skin tone, with just the right amount of highlight in there to keep me happy. Now, I need to try to make space in my makeup bag as this blush is here to stay. 

Rimmel Lasting Finish Extreme Lipstick in Salty 

How do I know it's autumn? By the crisp chill in the air, the spiced lattes taking over coffee shop menus, the falling burnt orange leaves? Actually, it's the number of plum and berry lipsticks that are re-introduced into my daily lip looks. Tis the season my friends and this creamy, bleed-free formula is just the right vehicle to pull off such an intense shade. Use the narrow end of the tear drop applicator to get the most precise finish, especially for the darker colours.

Rimmel London Ultimate Kohl Kajal Liner

Kajal was the very first makeup product I bought, so whenever I use it I get overwhelmed with nostalgia. Of course, I conveniently forget that my first foray into kohl was via a market stall and I subsequently got an eye infection. Alas, we live and we learn. This one has the most wonderful smooth formula and I was very impressed by how precise the line was. I tried both a smudgy, "morning after" look and also tried a more precise flick and it worked a treat with both. If you're not too confident with liquid eyeliner, this is the way to go. 

Rimmel Brow Pro Micro Ultra-Fine Precision Pencil in Dark Brown

Eyebrows really give me the fear, as I have sparse brows and filling them in feels like such a chore. I learned that pencils are my best bet and oh boy, is this a good one. The pencil is as fine as a needle so you can fill in and recreate every single individual hair. The formula isn't stiff or waxy, as is often the case, so it gets the job done quite quickly. The bonus of the brush on the other side was a great final step to add even more of a natural finish.

Rimmel Wonder'luxe Mascara

Ok, so a quick caveat. I have tiny baby eyelashes, so this picture was never going to look like a mascara ad. But, trust me this mascara is the best I've used in a long time. First of all, I could actually see my lashes once I used it, I got some volume and length on both my upper and lower lashes and the brush was the perfect shape to fully coat and separate the lashes. While I'm not going to put my false lashes to one side, I'll be keeping this mascara to hand for the days when I'm going more low-key #tinylashesmatter. 

Rimmel Exaggerate Liquid Eyeliner

I'm somewhat of an eyeliner expert, I know it's weird to call myself an expert, but I've put the work in to perfect my flick, so I'm going with it. Quite frankly, this is not the kind of applicator that I enjoy, I prefer a pen for its precision, but I went in with an open mind. There's a reason why this eyeliner is a fan favourite and whispered about in online forums. It's seriously good. Granted, I don't think it's for beginners as the nib is very fine and takes some practice to get a seamless line, but it's well worth it as the inky pigment is insane. 

Rimmel Jelly Blush in Melon Madness

During the course of this review, I've gone from not wearing blusher to now needing two different kinds of blush in my makeup bag. This bouncy formula is just the thing for those days when I want a natural flush as it's so easy to pat into the skin. I wore it over the Rimmel Lasting Matte Foundation and this picture was taken after around 8 hours. As you can see, they blended so well together.

It can be tricky to blend a cream blush with a matte foundation, but this one does it effortlessly. Plus, the texture reminds me of those fun pots of jelly slime that were always hanging around the school playground. Which is always a good memory. 

Rimmel Magnif'eyes Nude Edition Palette

I've never strayed from nude eyeshadow palettes, because these are the shades that I surround myself with in life. From my clothes to shoes and actually even food, hello truffles and crème brûlée, I'm all about the nude tones.

These shadows were really easy to blend in but as you can see, they lacked some definition. The colours needed a hint more pigment to do more complex looks with. However, they're definitely a great buy compared to the price of others on the market. So I'd recommend easing the blending and working with 1-2 shades at a time to get a bolder look. I find myself using this a lot when I want a simple everyday vibe. 

Rimmel Radiance Brick Bronzer in Shade 2

I pretty much brushed this over my entire face and I have zero regrets. There's a very fine line between shimmer and full on glitter ball and this bronzer has the perfect amount. As there's multiple tones in the powder, it worked really well with my complexion. One shade darker would have been slightly more flattering but it managed to brighten and add some light to my face, which was most welcome. 

Rimmel Stay Satin Liquid Lipstick in Redical

I have every red out there in my entourage of lipsticks, but I hadn't tried this formulation before. Yet, in the space of 5 minutes, this little tube managed to make its way into my top 3 lipsticks of all time.

Let's talk colour first, this blue-red is so sublime for darker skin tones. It's got a deepness to it that's incredibly flattering. The gift just keeps on giving with the balm-like texture as it's easy to apply neatly and keeps lips feeling comfortable and nowhere near that awful cracking that matte lipsticks often do. If you see me in the next 365 days, I'll probably be wearing this. 

I can't even express how much fun and how eye-opening of an experience this was. There's a constant stream of newness in beauty which makes it difficult to be brand loyal. For so many years, Rimmel was my back-up or reliable beauty option but after this it has made the leap into a destination brand for me. There's so much good stuff and the price does not equate to the quality at all.

I've tried £90 foundations, yet I've been wearing the Lasting Matte Foundation which comes in at £6 every day since. Sure, the shade ranges aren't where I'd like them to be and I was lucky to find good matches but it's definitely worth your time to try them out. If not the stellar range of lipsticks, blush and brow products will keep you busy. 

I'm now furiously sending all of my friends a list of all of these Rimmel products that they need to grab ASAP. I encourage you to do the same!

Whether it’s a cute tube of lip balm captured artfully tumbling out of your favourite influencer’s It bag or a carefully curated product lineup making an appearance in the backdrop of their #ootd, fashion girls are also keen to share their beauty finds with the most gorgeous packaging.

So where does that leave the beauty products that are just as good (if not better) in terms of performance, but are burdened with packaging that isn’t as attractive? I believe there’s a host of skincare, makeup and hair items industry insiders and stylish women use daily but that they’ll never share on Instagram.
