They’re conjured up months in advance of when you actually see them cropping up on the streets and in stores, decided upon based on shopping insights, consumer data, media engagement and the magic that is a designer’s intuition. So, you can only imagine my surprise when I suddenly saw the same pair crop again on the feet of a stylish content creator the next day when I was aimlessly scrolling through Instagram. And again, when I was perusing the new in section of leading online fashion stores like MyTheresa and Farfetch.

Now, I don’t usually believe in love at first sight, especially when sartorial affairs of the heart were concerned, but the act of seeing these sumptuous satin trainers in quick succession after never noticing them previously felt like no coincidence.

Was this the admiration people talk about when they feel like they’ve found a forever piece? I’m usually one to be more pragmatic with my investments, deciding to bite the bullet and purchase something only after I’ve undergone the tedious mental arithmetic of working out the cost per wear and the precise number of pieces they could be paired with. But as a fashion writer who has made their passion for shopping and love for identifying covetable and nascent styles, you can surely sympathise with how besotted I became with the style.

It’s a desire that my chic colleagues can attest to, after rushing back to my desk to share my eureka moment and proclaim that this exact fabric and shoe shape would soon be everywhere. Which brings us here; explaining to you, dear reader, not only my logic, but the rationale for why satin trainers are the latest shoe trends to back.

Of course, part of this harks back to what I was saying about trusting someone’s gut instincts. As someone who has worked in the industry for over half a decade, it takes a lot for me to feel genuinely excited about something bubbling up on the horizon. This is especially as I know what it takes to manufacture a trend, with celebrity endorsements often paid for and never an accident.

And when it comes to trainers, I hate to say it, but I’ve always found the practical silhouette somewhat dull as a category. I can admire how sneakers have become a fashion staple in their own right. Still, I’d much rather covet something more charming or beautiful. Therein lies part of the appeal of satin trainers. Whilst retro, low-profile and technical iterations have reigned supreme in recent months, this style feels like the antithesis of the functional versions that serve as prototypes for the genre. They’ll still provide orthopaedic support and enable you to clock in thousands of steps, but the delicate satin finish offers a darling and saccharine element that sets them apart from their competitors.

Who else but Miuccia Prada to show this best? As a stringent acolyte of hers, it doesn’t take a lot to convince me that her subversive and intellectual approach to fashion is superior. In fact, on a recent trip to Florence, I resolved to spend a day at the Prada outlet instead of exploring the Tuscan city’s rich art galleries and cathedrals, imagining the sprawling discounted store as my own personal wardrobe to shop from.

For the uninitiated, Mrs. Prada is truly one of the most cerebral creative directors working today, meaning that everything she produces to be incredibly considered, pondered over and refined. Another view is that satin, after a period where suede and leather dominated, was just the next logical material to utilise and make popular. Sure, there’s that too, but I’d rather take a kinder look at the trend and argue it injects an ethereal and glamorous element into ensembles during a time where dressing feels entirely ascetic. With this trend, we need not compromise on comfort for the sake of wearing something beautiful. Our austere uniform of funnel-neck jackets and straight-leg jeans can remain; it’s just about swapping out a stiffer shoe for something soft and polished.

Researching this piece, I’ve already noticed quite a lot of brands take up this mantle, with Dries Van Noten producing airy and glossy iterations of its viral trainer, to Grace Wales Bonner embracing this smooth texture in her latest collaboration with Adidas. I practically jumped at the opportunity to road-test autumn's trending trainers, i.e. the trainers I love but don't need (or have the wardrobe space for). My go-to shoe for a fair few years, I like to think of myself as somewhat of a trainer aficionado who can keenly spot a trending style on the horizon, which I'd always choose over the equivalent loafers or ballet flats.

Of course, not all trainers are built the same and can claim the coveted title of one of the pairs of the season. From timeless white trainers to buzzy drops like the New Balance X Miu Miu collab, which is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after designer trainer collections to date, there are a few telltale signs which signal when a style is destined to be a sellout. Firstly, they seamlessly slot into a capsule wardrobe, providing outfit versatility and styling ease (essentially, you can wear them again and again and they'll still feel elevated).

Secondly, you'll spot them on those in the know. My Review: With a retro '70s mood sweeping the trending trainer scene, slimeline styles featuring skinny soles and rounded toes can feel like a dime a dozen, but Dries Van Noten's Leather-Trimmed Sneakers stand miles above the rest. Quietly drawing Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber as fans, these trainers feature clean lines, a supple suede finish (unless you go for the leather and fabric iteration) and a complementary two-tone colour palette, offering all the ease of a classic trainer with a fresh 2025 twist. I've noticed them taking the place of Adidas Sambas in the outfits of chic Instagram users, so trying them was a must.

Fitting like a glove, their no-fuss design instantly elevates anything they're worn with. Much to my dismay (as I was desperately hoping these wouldn't be as good IRL as they looked online, owing to the more premium price tag), they lived up to their hype. The flat sole offers little cushioning, but that's part of their beauty—they almost mould to your feet. This gives them another draw I constantly look for when on the hunt for trainers: they make your feet look dainty. Now, anyone with large feet will understand this struggle. Most trainers, from chunky to flat-soled pairs, tend to exaggerate my shoe size, but these? They do the opposite; their slimline, sculptural build gives the illusion of petite feet without sacrificing their trending edge.

Whether you go for the classic tan suede colourway to the best-selling Bordeaux leather-and-fabric style—both key autumn 2025 colour trends—you'll have the perfect subtle pop of colour to balance your casual autumn outfits with a laid-back edge, rather than have your trainers make the whole look feel dishevelled and unpolished.

To put them to the test, I tried the suede pair with a fail-safe autumn capsule-wardrobe combination: light denim jeans, a thick, chunky knit and a khaki trench coat, and they looked every bit as polished as I was hoping they would. I styled the Bordeaux variation with the best-selling Dries funnel-neck jacket over the same jeans and knit. With its balloon sleeves, high collar and cotton-wool blend, it's both relaxed and structured, with a great weight that makes it perfect for layering. Chic, wearable and fashion-forward, these are definitely a pair I’d say are worth your time and money.

2. COS Minimal Leather Trainers

My Review: Now that we’re on the same page that slimline trainers are back, it would be remiss of me not to mention COS's minimal leather trainers. Spotted on influencer Lucy Williams at the brand's spring/summer 2025 show in Athens, there was a distinct buzz in the Who What Wear UK office when these designer-looking trainers hit shelves. Now, I know what you’re thinking: high-street trainers? But hear me out. Known for their high-quality craftspersonship and ahead-of-the-trend designs, COS does trainers better than its competitors, in my humble opinion. Made from a 100% suede shell and soft leather lining, these honestly aren't too dissimilar in style from the aforementioned Dries Van Noten style. Instead of a round toe, though, they have a slightly square shape, along with a thicker, ridged rubber sole and leather-accent trims. To me, they're like a hybrid between the Nike Cortez vintage running design and the motorsport silhouette of the new Adidas Taekwondo, resulting in a minimalistic trainer that's truly wearable.

Again, I tried true to size and was pleasantly surprised. They felt snug with thick socks but not too tight (and remember, leather trainers naturally soften and give). Each colourway is contemporary without being overtly trendy or trying too hard. The pony-hair pair in particular looks so luxe IRL, and is an easy way to dip into one of autumn's biggest shoe trends. However, the suede style left me slightly disappointed. A pair taken from the shop floor, I couldn't help but notice the discolouration in the black suede. Likely a result of repeated try-ons, there were paler spots where the shoes had seemingly rubbed against each other or another item of clothing, causing the dye to fade somewhat. This is the beauty of try-ons, though; I can truly test out an item for you before you buy, and had I purchased sight unseen, I wouldn't have been best pleased about this.

To give the trainers a proper road-test, I styled them with some of COS's key pieces for autumn: the Sculpted Merino Wool Jacket and the gloriously soft Brushed Cashmere Cardigan, both of which surpassed my expectations. The jacket is lightweight and fluid, a perfect transitional piece crafted from 100% wool, whilst the cardigan, which I've tried on before, was every bit as soft as I remembered. All in all, these trainers are perfect for those looking for a pared-back, easy-to-style shoe with a high-end feel that won't break the bank.

3. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

My Review: When I saw our senior shopping editor, Marina Avraam, rocking a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 trainers a few weeks ago, I was reminded just how great they are. Thin-soled and available in bright colours, the Mexico 66 features crossover stripes with an aesthetic reminiscent of Adidas Samba and Gazelle, just not as mainstream. Finding fans from fashion people to supermodels (Bella Hadid, here's looking at you), the popular neon yellow colourway was originally worn by Uma Thurman with her iconic yellow-and-black two-piece from Kill Bill Volume 1, which was released in 2003.

Since then, these trainers have filtered into mainstream, in an ever-expanding array of colourways that now includes a particularly bold silver style. This everywhere-but-somehow-also-under-the-radar trainer is constantly being worn by the coolest of fashion people, but I had yet to try it myself, so this was the perfect opportunity to put it to the test. I took my normal size in both pairs I tried (yellow and silver), and was genuinely surprised when they were a good fit. The silhouette looks deceptively narrow, so I tried them with my thickest socks, yet they were comfortable through and through.

Made from 100% cow leather, they’re smooth to the touch and glide onto the feet with ease. There's a definite throw-on-and-go energy to them, and each colour variant brings something a little different. Whether you're looking for a bold, contrasting shade or subtle minimalism, you’ll find a pair to match your vibe. Personally, for their wearability, wide range of colourways and cool-girl edge, I think these are some of the trendiest trainers to own, which is exactly why they made my list.

4. Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers

My Review: Now, I need to preface this by saying that I am not a fan of the Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers, and thus won't be subscribing to the "sneakerina" trend. From Iris Law to Dua Lipa, fashion's It girls have been gravitating towards this ballet flat-trainer hybrid for a romantically cool edge for some time now. With a low-profile design complete with several straps that bind the shoe to the foot, these ballet trainers offer all the comfort of a trainer (thanks to the rubber sole) whilst retaining a delicate aesthetic only ballet flats can achieve.

Because of my initial scepticism, I put these trainers to the test—hard. And as I sit here typing this, I have to eat my words. Surprisingly, they delivered, and my mind might be changed. The rubber sole makes them super-comfortable, especially if you’re someone who racks up 10,000 steps a day like me. The straps hold your feet in place, and the cut is just high enough that there's no toe cleavage on show (which is my preference). I stayed true to size, and the fit was spot on.

Adding a playful finish to the everyday blue jeans I was wearing when I tried them on, they added an IYKYK feel to my casual 'fit. Upon leaving the store, I suddenly found myself surrounded by a multitude of fashion people who had added delicate ballet satins and a plethora of charms to make them more individual. All in all, I have to admit that these trainers have all the makings of a trending style worth investing in if you're after something different, especially for those on-the-go looks that trainers do best.

My Review: It's not just retro flat soles making a strong comeback in the trainers sphere; chunky white sneakers are still very cool. But having moved on from the era of maximalist Balenciaga "dad" trainers, the coolest fashion people are now gravitating towards the Salomon XT 6 GTX. Depending on your taste, you might be thinking, "Surely not?", but thanks in part to Rihanna's co-sign, these ultra-functional trainers have gained serious traction—pun intended.

So for the launch of Dries Van Noten beauty to pass me by for 10 whole days is really quite something.

Since its launch at the end of last month, Dries Van Noten hasn't clogged up my Instagram feed. In fact, I have seen just a handful of posts from people I follow talking about the launch. And this surprised me in all of the right ways. How refreshing it is for a new brand to launch with minimal fuss and without saturating our social media feeds with tough sells or paying influencers to sing its praises. Instead, what I had seen was a handful of totally organic, glowing reviews from people whose opinion I really respect (everyone's favourite manicurist Harriet Westmoreland was the first I saw to really shout about DVN beauty on Instagram). And that made me want to try it even more. 

Comprising 10 fragrances, 31 lipstick shades, four lipstick cases, hand cream, soap and a few other beauty accessories, Dries Van Noten's beauty collection is impressively tight and refined. While other luxury fashion houses launch into beauty with vast makeup collections and bring out variations of the same fragrance every other season, Dries Van Noten has stuck to what it knows—luxury craftsmanship that has been carefully considered. 

I'll admit, the first thing that lured me in was the way the products look. I have, hand on heart, never seen a collection of perfumes that looks quite as chic as these. They look like works of art. They're the sorts of bottles I will keep out of my shelf long after they're empty. The lipsticks are equally as chic. With four case options in various patterns and designs, they ooze luxury and expense. 

Then we come onto the brand's eco credentials. Each fragrance is made up of over 85% natural-origin ingredients and is encased in a bottle made up of responsibly sourced, recyclable materials. The lipsticks are refillable—the cases are lightweight while the lipsticks themselves are small and (of course) animal-friendly. Most impressively though, the external packaging is a stroke of genius. Using FSC-certified paper and renewable natural wood fibres, there isn't a single unnecessary packaging component that could be deemed a waste. Needless to say, it's all recyclable too.

But, of course, no beauty launch is worth writing about unless the formulas themselves are worth it. And trust me when I say these products are winners. Truly, I have never come across a beauty collection quite like this. It is, for lack of a better word, the best beauty collection I've ever experienced. In fact, just this afternoon when I posted that I was writing this worthy review on my Instagram I had a number of other beauty insiders message me in agreement (Westmoreland included).

No, there isn't a tonne of products on offer, but what Dries Van Noten does offer, it does exceptionally well. For starters, the lipsticks are easily the best I've ever tried. Each one contains rosehip oil to leave lips feeling soft and comfortable. The matte formula in particular is a work of beauty genius. It leaves a matte, soft-focus blur of colour without causing even a hint of drying discomfort. I can't recommend them enough. 

Then we come onto the fragrances. Trust me when I say you will never experience perfumes like these. They are rich, mouth-wateringly delicious and have the power to turn every single head you walk past on the street. And they do all of this without being too much. They're not heady but also don't dilute on the skin into watery nothingness. They're expensive, yes, but the quality also oozes expense. It's as if the brand has taken every attribute of the chicest, richest women on the planet and rolled it all up into one hell of a fragrance collection. Seriously, Dries Van Noten beauty is the chicest, most exquisite beauty brand in existence.

For his F/W 15 collection, Antwerp-based designer Dries van Noten showed a collection inspired by what he refers to as "grounded glamour." The idea: Clothes that are as wearable and modest as they are glamorous and high-fashion.

His technique: Mixing the high and the low in expert ways, such as interweaving gold brocade with a classic quilted knit. The collection was also influenced by some of the designs that dominated van Noten's early career, with its Orientalia-inspired aesthetic.

We’ve covered a few of our favourite textures for fall, but today we’re touching on (no pun intended) one of our all-time favourites: quilted pieces! Thanks to F/W 14 runways like Miu Miu, Dior, and Chanel, everyone will be sporting these blanketed pieces all season long, and you should too!

While at first glance the Dries Van Noten spring show looks like an ode to Kurt Cobain—albeit with an elevated, elegant spin—upon further examination, it becomes clear that ‘90s grunge wasn’t the designer’s only inspiration. The bigger theme at play here was the unexpected. Pieces that are normally considered masculine and utilitarian, like the plaid work shirt, were reimagined with fabrics like taffeta and organza for a more feminine effect. Nightwear became daywear with kimono-like embroidered robes and peignoir-inspired dresses.

As for Van Noten’s use of prints, faded poppy motifs found on everything from sheer dresses to satin tops were a nod to Lucien Freud’s surrealist paintings, while Prince of Wale checks covering ladylike frocks, trousers, and slingbacks contrasted nicely with the clashing sheer tartan plaids. It's precisely the kind of luxe, beautiful, utterly cool clothing we want to wear all season long. In other words: this collection is a surefire hit.

The next time you want to add an opulent touch to your look, look East for inspiration. This spring, a number of designers were clearly inspired by Asia, showing collections that featured a traditional Japanese garment--the kimono--and reworking it in a modern, sophisticated way. But how do you translate this look off the runway? Keep reading to find out how.

On The Runways

Characterised by boxy cuts and lightweight fabrics, the kimono jackets on the S/S 13 runways ran the gamut from deconstructed interpretations to longer robe-like styles. For example, Prada's Silk Satin Patchwork Stole ($2495), Silk Satin Patchwork Dress ($4280), Silk Knit Shorts ($725), Jewel Bracelet ($895), Silk Flower Shoes (price upon request), Nappa Stretch Leather Socks (price upon request) offered an avant-garde take on kimono dressing, while at Pucci, Creative Director Peter Dundas' gilded cover-up featured a dragon motif and was teamed with a sheer top for an alluring look.

Meanwhile, Etro and Dries van Noten's looks weren't quite so ornate. The former's Floral Kimono ($1922, 310.248.2855) and Black Judo Pants ($750, 310.248.2855) combined a structured top with wide-leg trousers for a contemporary silhouette. Dries Van Noten's nod to kimonos came in the form of the Dust Role Embroidered Robe ($2570), Black Coriann Shirt ($640), and Prudence Pants ($765), a cool mix of patterns suited for the downtown girl.

Get The Look

1. To try this runway-inspired look, start with a kimono top in a lush floral print, like RACHEL Rachel Roy's Kimono with Tassels ($129) in Porcelain Combo.

2. Wear a simple camisole underneath, like Madewell's Silk Cami ($72) in Bone.

3. BCBGMaxazria's JWNBB729 Belt ($68) cinches in your waist, creating a more flattering shape.

4. Toughen up the look with a choker. We suggest Kenneth Jay Lane's Chain Textured Bib Necklace ($106).

5. Balance out the kimono's '70s-inspired, bohemian feel by pairing it with faux leather leggings. We chose H&M's Navy Leather Leggings ($149)--yes, the navy and black colour combo works and makes this a decidedly modern look.

6. Add a pair of studded shoes, like Stuart Weitzman's Ratatat Heels ($450) in Black. The gold accents give your floral, flowy kimono robe some edge, so the resulting outfit is an insouciant mix of elements suitable for a night out on the town.
