"Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

We're starting to see a similar style take shape this summer, but it's a tad shorter, kissing the nape of the neck instead of the tops of the shoulders. Side bangs are back, baby. While they have a glam, Old Hollywood flair (especially here on Halle Berry), they're actually pretty low-maintenance. "A side sweep gives softness and partial coverage without turning into a heavy curtain you have to push aside all day," shares Dueñas.

9. The Veil

Coined by Schlabach, "the veil" refers to the softer, longer bangs that accompany a shag. "I love to cut these in without creating any blunt horizontal lines, leaving them soft and [having] them drop right into the lash line, then transition them downward steeply into the rest of the length. This gives a lot of mystery to the face, as it closes it down a bit," he explains.

This fringe suits long, medium-length, and short curly cuts, and it doesn't require much styling, which is great for those on the hunt for low-maintenance 'dos. Although, it's not for everyone: "It sits right in the eyes, and as saucy as it looks, it can get annoying for some," Schlabach caveats. "The beauty and the pain of this bang choice is that it grows out all too soon and can quickly be swept to either side or down the middle and turn into face-framing rather than a bang."

It's lush and voluminous and pairs great with a shorter cut—think collarbones and up, Schlabach notes. "You need to be relatively curly for these bangs and have enough density to support the shape, though," he adds. "You can wear these bangs defined or shaken out, the latter being my personal favorite."

"I'm seeing a lot of '90s revival meets French girl texture: soft, fluffy, barely-there bangs paired with volume and layers," Alfaro notes. "Think undone, romantic curls that frame the face instead of strict, polished shapes. The look feels effortless and confident." The great thing about curly bangs is that they don't have to be too precise—the more imperfect the better, actually. Dueñas recommends leaning into your natural texture by opting for wispy, intentionally mismatched pieces. "Some strands [will] be longer, some shorter. These bangs help add movement and don't overwhelm your face," he shares.

What Fringes Look Good With Curly Hair?

"Curly bangs look best when they flow naturally with your curl pattern instead of fighting against it," says Alfaro. "Shapes like soft, rounded bangs or curtain-style curly fringe frame the face beautifully and blend into the rest of the curls for a seamless look. These styles work because they keep the curls' natural volume and bounce so the bangs feel lived-in, not forced."

All three experts I spoke to were quick to highlight the curly shag—one of the most on-trend hairstyles for 2025. "It gives movement, personality, and a 'perfectly imperfect' vibe," Alfaro adds. Dueñas agrees, gushing over Zendaya's curly fringe. "But honestly, I'm a sucker for short, curved fringe that's carved into tight curl patterns," he adds.

Are There Any Bangs Those With Curly Hair Should Avoid?

According to the pros, those with curly hair might want to avoid blunt, straight-across bangs, namely because it's tricky to get a razor-cut edge on curly textures. "They tend to shrink unevenly and lose shape as curls dry. Instead, opt for textured or point-cut bangs that follow your curls' natural pattern," Alfaro suggests. Shrinkage is also an important factor to keep in mind when opting for shorter types, like baby or micro bangs.

On a similar note, both Alfaro and Dueñas advise against cutting curly bangs on wet hair. "A wet and dry cut is key," Alfaro adds. "Wet to get a foundation haircut and make sure you're cutting three inches longer than what you originally want. Then cut again when they're dry and styled. That's when you can see exactly how each curl falls."

Are Curly Bangs in Style in 2025?

Absolutely—and they'll never leave the chat! Leaning into your natural curl pattern will ensure you wind up with a timeless and flattering haircut every time. "I would say top of the list for curly bang styles are shag bangs (the ones that look like they are preexisting layers of your haircut)," Dueñas notes.

How to Style Curly Bangs

Consider leave-in conditioner, hair oil and mousse your new best friends. On wet hair, apply a lightweight leave-in or oil to provide moisture and slip. "Make sure your fringe is absolutely drenched with water before applying any product," Dueñas advises. Next, grab a mousse and "lightly scrunch upward to encourage curl formation," Alfaro explains.

Leave them to air-dry, and try not to mess with them too much—the more you touch curly bangs, the more they'll frizz. If you'd like to quickly style, "use a diffuser on low heat and low airflow, cupping the bangs to shape them as they dry," shares Alfaro. "The goal is soft, lived-in texture not perfection. Curly bangs should look like they belong with the rest of your curls, not like they were forced into place."

If you have micro or baby bangs, "you might want a little more control to keep them from standing up," Schlabach shares. "A lightweight gel should do the job, and definition is a good option to really showcase the blunt line they create to outline the top of the face."

Note, fringes often get oily at a faster rate than the rest of your hair (given that they're in constant contact with your face), so a daily refresh is always a good idea. Alfaro recommends reviving the fringe with a small bit of water and leave-in and/or gel. Don't forget to scrunch!

There was a time in my life when I didn’t pay any consideration to what shampoo or conditioner I used. Yes, despite anyone with curly hair understanding how much of an event hair wash day is, I focused most of my attention on the serums, masks and curl creams that I layered on post-wash instead of recognising the importance of the products I was starting with.

Let's be real: Effortless beauty is somewhat of a myth. Oftentimes, that "no makeup" makeup or "perfectly imperfect" hair takes just as much—if not more—legwork than going full glam. So when I saw "ghost waves" (a term coined by hairstylist Tom Smith) popping up all over social media as a low-maintenance summer hair trend, I thought there was no way they could be that easy to achieve. Barely there bends? Sounds fabulous, but my curls have more of an energetic presence, so I'd likely need multiple hot tools to create that texture—a task that doesn't seem very effortless at all.

Because I was a bit hesitant, I asked Smith himself how every hair type—from pin-straight strands to dense coils—can master the ghost waves trend at home, and it turns out, this breezy style is as unfussy as it seems. Scroll ahead for his in-depth tutorial.

What Are Ghost Waves, and Why Are They Trending Right Now?

Smith describes the style as "soft, barely there, S-shaped waves." They're effortless and undone, evoking the laid-back, '70s-inspired energy of a billowy boho dress. In fact, celebrities like Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldaña, and Daisy Edgar-Jones have all paired their ultra-boho Chloé dresses with understated ghost waves in the past year. Let it be known: Boho chic is back, and a free-spirited chiffon moment calls for an equally floaty hairstyle to match.

"The term comes from the fact that it's an undetectable technique," Smith explains. "Rather than being able to say, 'Oh, those are GHD curls,' or 'That's a curling-iron wave,' or 'That's a blowout,' it's a hidden technique, so you can't quite see how it's been done. It also [has] a whisper of texture rather than a shout. … The ghost wave speaks to that person who [loves] a quiet luxury [aesthetic], as opposed to the mob wife from last year."

This all being said, ghost waves are way more versatile than you think. Yes, they are technically categorized by slight, undetectable bends in the hair, but you can also simply lean into your natural texture for your own version of effortless, boho-inspired strands. The only general "rule" is to secure a middle part, as that tends to read breezier. "But it doesn't have to be a perfect middle parting," Smith caveats. "It can be something that's a little bit more irregular, which leans into that effortless look."

How to Achieve Ghost Waves at Home

"There are two approaches I would take," Smith notes. "There's an air-dry version and a hot-tool version for each hair type." Find all his tips for both ventures below.

Air-Dried Ghost Waves

Straight Hair Types

For those with straighter strands (hair types 1a to 2a), braids will be your best friends. "Braiding the hair can work really well if we're working on a thicker straight hair type," Smith shares. "Finer, straight hair types tend to look a little bit crimped if you braid them." If you do have finer locks, just keep the braids really loose to encourage more relaxed bends.

Before braiding, prep your strands with lightweight hydrators (think leave-ins and sea salt sprays) to moisturise without weighing down the waves. Braid the hair—either two pigtails or one larger plait—and leave them on overnight. "I wouldn't sleep with it completely wet in a braid, because it just won't dry," Smith shares. (That's where the lightweight sprays come in handy to encourage a bit of texture as it air-dries.) When you wake up, "a little impression of a bend can come into the hair," he shares.

Wavy-Curly Hair Types

"Those with any kind of wave or loose curl can achieve ghost waves quite easily," declares Smith. "There's a natural ghost wave underlying in the hair; it's just about how you prep."

That said, the exact prep steps will differ depending on your exact curl type (from 2b to 3a). "If your natural waves drop out quite easily, prepping the hair with a light-moisture, strong-hold product—like a hair mousse or a gel—is the best way to start," Smith suggests. "[That's] going to be the right consistency to encourage the texture contract and get a little bit stronger." Simply scrunch in your mousse or gel of choice into freshly washed, towel-dried hair without brushing it through, and let it air-dry.

Once your waves are completely dry, scrunch once again with your fingertips to eliminate any crispiness. "Then I would simply put your head upside down and spray through some texture spray to loosen it up and get that fluffy haze to it," adds Smith. If you find that your waves still haven't contracted as much as you'd like, you can add some styling powder to give them more body; focus the powder on your roots, gently working it through your hair to encourage volume.

If your waves or curls don't have as much trouble holding their shape, "the only difference is to use stronger moisture and lighter hold," explains Smith. Think creams, oils, and balms—anything super nourishing that has a bit of weight to it. "Brush that through the texture, and then shake it without scrunching," Smith instructs. Let the hair air-dry, and do your best not to touch it (tempting as it may be). "Letting it fully air-dry will lock the texture in. You can shake and fluff it up as much as you want once it's dry, and you'll have a bit more control over the result," he adds.

Curly Coily Hair Types

For curly, coily hair, natural ghost waves will have more than an undetectable bend. "If you want the Miley Cyrus [circa 2010] sort of ghost wave, then you would need to get a silk press first, straighten [the hair] all out, and then bend the waves in." That said, the ghost waves trend can also just refer to an air-dried wash-and-go, so you can adapt it to your curl pattern. According to Smith, those with tighter textures can achieve a curlier version of ghost waves by doing a two- or three-strand twist-out.

Again, you'll want to prep freshly washed hair with moisturising creams, oils, and balms. You can also gently pre-stretch the strands with your fingers or a paddle brush before twisting your hair section by section. "The bigger the sections you take, the looser you're going to make the wave," Smith notes. Leave them overnight, and then unravel the twists once the strands are completely dry. [It's] a curlier version of ghost waves, and it's much kinder and gentler to the texture," Smith notes.

Ghost Waves Using Hot Tools

The boho trend is all about embracing your natural texture, but you can feel free to use hot tools to secure a more uniform result. After a generous spritz of heat protectant (always!), straighten your full head of hair however you please (be it a silk press, blowout, or quick rough-dry), and then grab a hair straightener. Smith recommends the Dyson Corrale, as you can easily create flat-iron waves without the hassle of a cord.

Bend the hair in sections, pausing in between each pass. "Bend it one direction, as if you were about to make a curl, then let the hair drop out. Wait for a second so it cools slightly, and then pick that same strand up, turn the opposite direction, pausing again, turning it the opposite direction." Smith instructs. Essentially, you'll want to create the impression of a wave instead of a full curl. The number of sections you style will depend on your hair's thickness and texture, but remember that the waves are supposed to be irregular—nothing too perfect.

To make things even easier, he says you can also grab a two- or three-pronged waver to create those impressions. "The trick there is [using] really big, irregularly shaped sections," he shares, praising GHD's Triple Barrel Waver. "It's a really big, chunky one, and [the barrels] are slightly cornered rather than completely round, so it gives a more natural-looking wave."

After you've waved to your liking, shake the hair out without brushing it. "Brushing it is going to make it too puffy," Smith says. Curling wands can also come in handy if you need a refresh. Just make sure you wrap sections irregularly so they don't look too overdone.

How Long Should You Keep Braids In?

Most braids can be worn for four to six weeks, depending on the style and how well they're maintained. Too long, and you risk matting and breakage. Listen to your hair. Once you start noticing buildup, obvious overgrowth, frizz or if your scalp feels itchy no matter how much you refresh it, it’s probably time to take them out.

Top tip: To keep braids looking fresher for longer, Tosin Johnson, owner of SIMPLYGorgeous, advises to “lightly mist with water and braid spray every few days to keep them fresh and hydrated.” You also can’t go wrong with “protecting at night and preventing frizz by sleeping in a satin bonnet or scarf,” Jonhson adds.

How Do You Keep Braids Clean?

You don’t have to drench your whole head to keep your braids fresh. The big focus should be on your scalp. Use a gentle cleanser or diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle to target buildup and rinse lightly. Johnson adds, "Start with a well-hydrated and cleansed scalp, so do a good wash with a shampoo such as The Steam Bar Scalp Shampoo, £30.” For boho/mermaid/goddess braids, Johnson also advises, “Blend curly human hair into different sections throughout the braid for that effortless boho vibe, then use a curl-defining mousse to keep the free pieces bouncy. Avoid heavy oils so the curls don’t matte or look stringy.”

Top tip: Put a wig cap on while washing braids and wash through it to protect the partings and keep braid frizz to a minimum. Some rosemary hair oil goes a long way to moisturise, and be gentle with those edges.

How to Prep Hair Before Braiding

Healthy braids start with healthy hair. That means a good wash, deep condition and a hydrating base to make sure your strands stay moisturised underneath the style to help prevent breakage. “Always prep your hair with a hydrating leave-in conditioner before braiding to ensure it’s well moisturised in the braid, and wrap your hair at night to prevent frizzing,” says Johnson.

Claire Martin, curl educator at The Doux UK, advises, “Use a base gel for neat partings (Try: The Doux Push It! Honey Braid & Edge Gel, £14) and follow with a foam for a smooth base and frizz-free hold (Try: The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam, £16). Lock in moisture with coconut, rose, avocado and monoi oil.”

Johnson doubles down on this. "Apply a strengthening serum, like Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Oil (£11), beforehand to protect your strands. Lightly mist with water and braid spray every few days to keep them fresh and hydrated."

How to Protect Your Scalp While Wearing Braids

Don’t ignore your scalp just because it’s tucked under braids. Make sure your style isn’t too tight and give your roots some love throughout the week. A tension-free base is key. Use soothing products like aloe-based sprays or oils to calm your scalp if needed.

"Wrap your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf to reduce friction. Lightly mist your scalp with water and braid spray every few days to keep it hydrated and calm," says Johnson.

Top tip: Use lightweight extensions (perhaps even plant-based) and a gentle shampoo while wearing a wig cap to keep things clean.

Can You Work Out or Swim with Braids?

You can absolutely swim with braids. Braids are made for movement; you just need a rinse-and-dry game plan post-activity. Just rinse your scalp with water after workouts or swims to remove sweat and chlorine, and pat your braids dry with a microfiber towel. Wear a swim cap for chlorine-heavy pools and always dry your braids completely after exposure to water.

Four years ago, I made one of the biggest changes of my life. In October 2020, I underwent the "big chop," trimming my chemically altered hair to the root for my natural texture to make a triumphant return. Going back to natural coils also prompted a deep edit of the hair products I used daily and required relearning how to care for them. In truth, I wouldn't have known where to begin my natural hair journey if not for the guidance of trusted hairstylists who taught me about celebrity hairstylist and educator Andre Walker's popular curl-typing system.

To get a better idea of what the different curl types are and what each needs to thrive, I tapped Maria Sotiriou, curl specialist and founder of Silke London, and celebrity hairstylist Sophie Rose Gutterman to share the perfect curly hair routine for your needs and their favourite products designed to enhance curls of all types. Whether you're looking to completely revamp your haircare routine or have yet to be introduced to your hair type, they've got you covered. The Different Curl Types

"Curly hair" is an umbrella term used to describe hair with tighter textures and the pattern of individual hair strands. The texture of each is categorized as being fine, medium, or coarse. "Each category is determined by the circumference of individual strands," Sotiriou explains. A hair type is assigned to determine how we expect the hair to act. "1a, 1b, and 1c hair is straight hair and will probably be difficult to style and hold a curl, whereas 4c type hair will be coily, but the texture can be fine and delicate even though you might not think it is," she says.

If you're unsure of where your strands fall on the spectrum, you're in luck. Sotiriou tells me there's a quick trick to revealing the nature of your hair. "The easiest way to determine curl pattern is by looking to see if the curl rotates round and back to sit just below the curl above. That would probably be coily hair," Sotiriou says. "If the hair curls around but drops lower when moving into the next curl, that is probably curly hair. Finally, if the hair doesn't curl back around but drops into a bend, that is wavy hair."

Is it possible for there to be different curl types on a single head of hair? According to Gutterman, not only can someone have multiple curl types in different locations, but they can also change over time. "It can be [more] curly, and the texture over time can get straight or be different from heat damage, chemicals, or even taking hormonal supplements," she explains. It's also helpful to know if your curls are high or low porosity, since water and products can enter the hair but also leave it easily. "Hair porosity will play a big role in how much product you need. Depending on how well your hair retains water, you may have to use a more hydrating leave-in," says Gutterman.

Type 2 (Wavy Hair)

Type 2 curls range from fine to coarse textures, are bendable, hold their shape, and grow in an S-shaped pattern from the scalp. To extend the longevity of styles with type 2 curls and reduce the chance of flattening, try diffusing your curls for maximum volume and definition. Then, finish off with a lightweight holding spray.

2a: This curl type features a fine texture that can be easily straightened. It also tends to lack volume at the root. To give the hair more volume and fullness, consider using light hair mousse to add some fullness at the base and pump up the volume without weighing down your strands.

2b: Lying flat at the crown with defined S-shaped waves starting from mid-length, the strands of this hair type have a thicker diameter than 2a. To play up your natural waves, try using a sea salt texturizing mist.

2c: Because the 2c curl type features S-shaped bends that are defined at the root and thick, they're susceptible to frizzing. To keep your curls well-maintained and defined, use a non-lathering, sulfate-free co-wash between washdays that won't strip natural oils and moisture away. Layering styling cream with mousse will lock in moisture and add hydration.

Type 3 (Curly Hair)

Type 3 curls range from shiny, loose S-pattern curls to tight corkscrew-shaped curls that form ringlets. The secret to maintaining the health of these strands is to use products that moisturize and define while combating halo frizz. You may also see some success layering products for extended wear time.

3a: This hair type tends to be shiny and have large, loose curls. It's also one of the most fragile curl types, as any friction can create frizz. Try scrunching a curl-enhancing product into damp hair to emphasise its texture and spritz with a lightweight curl refresher.

3b: Strands with a 3b curl type come in the form of springy, tight ringlets. This texture can get dry, so make sure you use curl gel formulated with humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe vera to attract moisture, offer definition, and deter frizz.

3c: This curl type is defined by densely packed, high-volume curls that are impacted by humidity, resulting in frizz. To stop your curls from drying out, use sulfate-free, creamy cleansers followed by mousse and styling cream while your hair is still wet.

Type 4 (Coily Hair)

Type 4 hair—also referred to as kinky or Afro textured—features tight, small curls that are naturally dry and can range from fine to coarse. They form tight, Z-shaped strands at the scalp and often experience shrinkage without help from products formulated to lengthen and define the hair. No matter how these curls are styled, moisture is their best friend!

4a: If someone has 4a curls, it means the hair has a visible curl pattern with springy, densely packed, S-shaped coils. Try pairing a curl cream with leave-in conditioner and incorporating a scalp massager in your haircare routine to detox the scalp while reducing buildup.

4b: This densely packed curl type has sharp, Z-shaped angles instead of coils that can be shaped and styled in many ways. Because this hair type is prone to dryness, combine priming and moisture sprays with leave-in conditioners with hydrating curl creams between washes.

4c: The 4c pattern has a zigzag shape like 4b curls, but it's less defined and sometimes indiscernible to the eye. This curl type also experiences more shrinkage than any other curl type. Avoid using products containing sulfates that strip the hair of moisture. Instead, opt for natural oils like argan, shea butter, and coconut oil in leave-in conditioners and creams to keep the hair moisturised.

Building a Curly Hair Routine

For anyone who's just beginning to learn about their curls, consider scaling back on hairstyling products and heat-styling to focus solely on creating a haircare routine built around the wellness of your hair. This can be done by trimming your strands every 10 to 12 weeks and using pre-wash oiling treatments, hydrating/repairing products, leave-in conditioning creams, heat protection, and sleep protection.

"All your hard work is lost unless you use nighttime hair protection to protect not only your hair but also all the products you've applied to your hair from being lost to the abrasive fabrics of your pillowcase," Sotiriou says.

Unsure of where to start on your curly hair journey? Below, Sotiriou shares four steps you can take to promote healthy, thriving curls through hydration, styling, and maintenance as well as the products she recommends adding to your natural haircare lineup for the best possible results. She likes to call her go-to routine the "lock in, ease out, maintain" method.

1. Lock In (Hydrate): Wash the scalp with a moisturising, protein-rich shampoo that will bring your hair to a level where you will need far fewer styling products. Follow with a hair mask or conditioner and distribute product through the hair with a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush, rinse, squeeze out excess water and apply a leave-in conditioner.
2. Ease Out (Cast and Release Curls): Apply curl mousse, styling cream, or styling gel before leaving the hair to dry and set into curls. Once set, rub oil serum into the palms of your hands, tip your head upside down, and squeeze the serum into the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
3. Maintain (Make Curls Last): Extend your curly style by protecting it overnight with a silk hair wrap. Sleeping on curls without it will cause your curls to frizz and dehydrate. You'll also want to avoid overwashing!

Additionally, finding a line of products that works for your particular haircare needs and sticking with it will reap the best results. "I promise you will always be searching for the perfect product, but my honest opinion is that it doesn't exist for everyone. The product that works for your bestie will not give you the same results because you have different hair," says Gutterman. "Finding your own cocktail seems like a lot of work, but practice makes perfect! You can never go wrong with a hydrating cream. Once you master the level of moisture, then you can decide how much hold you need," she adds. Don't be afraid to get your hands in your curls and play with products!

On 17 October, 2024, I had the best hair day of my life.

My roots felt airy and fresh; my tapered, stringy ends looked bouncy and full (despite delaying a trim for yet another three weeks—oops); and my colour appeared ten times more vibrant. All I did was saunter over to NYC's Paul Labrecque Salon & Skincare Spa for a casual (read: very extensive), multi-step scalp treatment with pro hairstylist Frederic Moine, who focused on a French skincare staple—Biologique Recherche's Lotion P50.

Those familiar with the cult favourite exfoliator might (understandably) raise a brow. How can this vinegar-smelling solution possibly help with hair? Well, allow me to reveal that P50 comes in a scalp version—called Lotion P50 Capillaire (£157)—that helps balance oil production, reduce flaking, and stimulate the skin up top. Since Moine taught me how to properly massage it into my scalp (which was an experience nothing short of marvelous, let me tell you), my hair has never looked healthier. I'm currently two-ish months into the routine, and the commitment has been well worth it. Allow me to gush about my latest winter haircare saviour.

Wait, what's P50?

For the uninitiated, let's begin with a quick download of the beloved Biologique Recherche staple. Lotion P50 (£94) is an exfoliating toner that works wonders for fading hyperpigmentation, smoothing skin texture, and brightening overall tone. In addition to standard skin-buffing heroes like lactic acid, salicylic acid, and malic acid, it contains some unconventional players like onion extract, horseradish extract, myrrh, myrtle, and vinegar for extra purification. This is why P50 has a reputation for a funky, salad dressing-like smell (some can't get past it, but I honestly don't find it too distracting!).

Biologique Recherche has launched multiple versions of the classic since its inception, including a targeted formula for dry skin, sensitive skin, and those struggling with hyperpigmentation. And in skincare circles, P50 has become a household name, lauded by derms, aestheticians, and celebrities alike for its smoothing, clearing properties. The general consensus? It's pricey—but it's worth it.

How to Use It on the Scalp

As I mentioned up top, P50 also comes in a scalp-focused solution, dubbed Lotion P50 Capillaire. It contains the same core ingredients as the aforementioned skincare savior, like AHAs and BHAs, but it also features specific, good-for-scalp actives, such as rosemary extract and niacinamide. Not to mention, it contains garlic bulb extract (which research shows can help with hair growth) and vinegar, which has purifying properties. Given those pungent actives, P50 Capillaire also has an acidic scent that doesn't exactly lend itself to a soothing spa day, but not to fret—it works best as a pre-shampoo treatment.

Simply section your hair and apply the tonic until your scalp is evenly coated, massage it gently with your fingertips, then let it marinate for about five to 10 minutes. (Like the toner, you might experience a slight tingly sensation with P50 Capillaire.) Once all those purifying, nourishing ingredients have properly soaked in, you can hop in the shower and shampoo and condition your strands as normal.

My Experience and Results

I don't have capital-D dandruff, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't accrue itching and flakes once the air turns crisper. (Maybe that means I do have moderate dandruff? Derms, weigh in!) As soon as I implemented P50 Capillaire into my routine, however, those side effects quickly started to ebb. Even just applying the solution on my scalp gave me immediate relief, the tingly formula instantly refreshing my senses.

But let me back up for a moment. In Moine's chair, I was given a full-on scalp detox treatment that lasted around one and a half hours. He first used a pipette to precisely apply the P50 solution all over my scalp before giving me a lovely, 10-minute head massage, during which I could literally feel the tension melting from my body. After said bliss, I skipped over to the wash bowl, where Moine scrubbed out all the buildup and overall gunk the P50 brought to the surface. I'll admit, it was strangely gratifying to see those white flakes swirling down the drain.

Next, he applied the brand's Masque Dermo-Apaisant, another pre-shampoo mask meant to calm any inflammation—sort of like how a facialist might apply a cooling, moisturising mask post-chemical peel to neutralise the effects. Then I headed back to the wash bowl, where Moine shampooed and deep conditioned my strands (using Biologique Recherche products, of course). Before blow-drying, he gave my lengths a healthy spritz of the brand's Keractive treatment to strengthen the hair fibre, smooth the cuticle, and provide shine. My hair has never looked glossier, smoother, or healthier—and it all started with some scalp T.L.C.

Now, I'd be lying if I said I followed this exact same routine for the next two months. I've got things to do! People to see! Dedicating 10 minutes to weekly scalp massages doesn't sound like a huge commitment, but after a particularly long work day, even 60 seconds can feel like a giant undertaking.

Yet even without the spa-grade relaxation, P50 Capillaire gave me that same level of scalp-refreshing bliss. I shampoo my hair one to two times per week, so I make sure to give my scalp a good spritz each wash day. I don't use a pipette like Moine; rather, I section my hair and apply P50 to each, massaging it in with my fingers before moving onto the next area. Once my scalp is thoroughly coated, I'll use a scalp brush for some extra stimulation, massaging all over in circular motions. The whole process takes no more than five minutes. After leaving it to marinate for around 10 minutes, I then hop in the shower and shampoo and condition as normal.

I'm currently two months into the routine, and I won't ever look back. My 2C waves air-dry to perfection—soft, smooth, and bouncy—and most importantly, my scalp feels comfortable, nary a flake in sight. Considering the frigid temperatures we've experienced in NYC lately (it's a balmy -9 degrees celcius as I type this), that's an impressive feat. Now, whenever a friend or colleague asks me if I'm a P50 fan (as I said, it's a household name!), I respond with: Yeah, the toner is great, but I think it works even better on your scalp. Call it a French haircare secret.

As someone with naturally very straight hair I'm fortunate in that I've never had to rely on using a hair straightener on a daily basis. However, when it comes to curling my hair, it's a different story. Over the years I've tried countless tools, products, hacks, and techniques to add curls to my hair and make them last. Nine times out of ten my hair is poker straight again within 24 hours, and at best I'll get a few days of soft curls and loose waves.

Fortunately for me, winter 2024's latest hairstyle trend is in fact all about loose, gentle curls. Indeed, every hairstylist I know is taking about 'soft curl hairstyles'—one of those rare but wonderful trends that is both elegant and sophisticated.

If you have naturally wavy hair then you're in luck, because apart from some curl-boosting and defining products, you won't need much to nail this trend. Of course, if you have naturally tight curls, then achieving a very softer curl will mean you may need to straighten your hair first before tonging, which will take some more time. And if, like me, you have naturally straight hair, don't worry—soft curl hairstyles are still super easy to pull off. Why? Because this style isn't about getting perfect, tight and bouncy curls that last for days. In fact, looser 'day two' curls are exactly what we're aiming for with this style.

How to style a soft curl hairstyle

One of the great things about a soft curl hairstyle is its versatility—with the right prep and styling, it can look as good by day five as it does on day one. If you're not naturally blessed with soft curls, then you will need a heat-styling tool and a few curl-boosting products to achieve this look. Saf Kneafcy, hairstylist at Blue Tit Portobello recommends starting with volume spray in the roots and mousse to the mid lengths and ends. "Using a round brush, create volume at the roots by elevating the hair," she says. "Then, go through the hair in sections and using a tong create curls, before allowing them to fully cool down and brushing through with a soft bristle brush." At this point, use a hairspray to set your curls in place and ensure they last for a few days. If you find your hair struggles to hold a curl, you might want to opt for a tighter curl to begin with so that it eventually drops into a softer one.

If you have long hair then by day three, you're probably ready to style it into an up-do. "The always trendy messy up-do is perfect for those looking for ⁠effortless glam," says Kneafcy. ⁠You may want to revive your curls to begin with—in which case Kneafcy recommends using a Ghd Curve Soft Curl Tong (£159) to create some texture in the hair, before applying texture or sea salt spray.

"Next, pull the hair back into a high or low pony, leaving out pieces at the front to frame the face," she explains. "To create more volume and texture, pull some of the hair at the roots, then take the pony into a few sections and twist each section around the base, before finally securing with hair pins."

"If your hair is soft and shaggy, for example, have soft shaggy fringe. If your hair heavier on the ends, you go a slightly heavier fringe," he says. Whether for a trim, a silk press or a simple blow-dry and straighten, I love a trip to the hairdresser. As someone with curly hair (a mix of 3C and 4A, to be exact), I find that when I try to wash and style my hair at home, it just doesn’t have the same effect.

This means I’ve spent a lot of time and money trying to find those perfect at-home hair stylers to give me a salon-like finish, and I think I may have finally found a hot brush that does the job. Enter the GHD Duet Blowdry Brush (£379), which promises to give "effortlessly sleek and bouncy blowdries in the comfort of your own home, using a unique aerodynamic system to avoid heat damage."

As someone who has used way too much heat on my hair over the years, I was very excited to try this out.

What Makes the GHD Duet Blowdry Brush Different?

The Duet Blowdry Brush is a follow-up from the brand’s Duet Style, which launched in 2023. Unlike other blow-dry brushes (also known as hot brushes), it promises to dry the hair in two different ways: first with hot air flow at a controlled temperature of 120°C, and second via the brush's ceramic bristles, which heat to speed up the drying and styling process.

The tool also claims to leave you with three times more hair volume and strands 50% shinier. I would also note that, unlike most other hair tools that advise use on slightly damp hair after air or towel-drying, GHD claims you can use this one straight away on wet hair. This is something I was initially sceptical about, as I'm usually left with a lot of frizz when I use a drying tool without slightly drying my hair first, so I was eager to put it to the test.

My Review of the GHD Duet Blowdry Brush

I used the hot brush straight after washing my hair with my usual Olaplex No.4 Shampoo and No.5 Conditioner (£56). I added a couple of drops of the No.7 Bonding Oil (£28) before blowing out my hair (I'm a big Olaplex fan). The first thing I noticed was that the tool is very noisy—noticeably louder than other hot brushes I've used. However, I instantly picked up on how easy it is to use. I timed myself, and it took just under 12 minutes to fully dry and style my hair with the brush, which is much quicker than a regular drying tool. Usually, by the end of my hair routine, my hands are aching from holding up the tools for so long, but the Duet made the process faster without compromising on results.

I was so impressed with how my hair looked and felt after using the hot brush. Firstly, it actually dried and smoothed out my roots, something I find difficult to achieve with bulkier hair-drying tools. My hair was also smooth, voluminous and super shiny. Usually, after using a hot brush, I would go in with a pair of straighteners to get rid of additional frizz and further smooth out my hair, but this means adding even more heat. However, with this tool, I genuinely didn't need to. It's obviously not quite as smooth as an actual salon blowout, but considering that the Duet uses significantly less heat and only takes 12 minutes, I was very impressed.

Final Thoughts

At almost £400, the GHD Duet Blowdry Brush is significantly more expensive than other hot brushes on the market. However, if you're able to justify the price, I'd definitely recommend doing so, because I feel like it gives me a smooth and shiny blowout without the heat damage that other tools impart. I'll still be popping into the salon for the odd visit for special occasions, but this is for sure a tool I’ll be using regularly.

Who What Wear UK Next in Beauty Awards 2024: Best Hair Products 

Shampoo is the foundation of a good hair day, and it can make or break the rest of your hairstyling routine. However, Alfaparf Milano's Detoxifying Low Shampoo won over our judges, who now can't live without it in their bathrooms. The detoxifying formula gently removes build-up at the roots, leaving hair bouncy and glossy through the lengths.

"The product is one of very few shampoos that make a difference. My hair feels lightweight and instantly cleaner, and looks much thicker and glossier," says makeup artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis.

Our judges also loved how well it removed product build-up to leave their roots feeling super clean, which even extended the amount of time they could go without shampooing again. "Unlike other detoxifying shampoos, this formula doesn’t strip the hair but it does make it feel incredibly soft after use," says deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. "My hair is less greasy and I definitely get an extra day out of it compared to my regular shampoo. My friends told me how shiny my hair looked, and the only difference I had made was using this shampoo, so that speaks for itself," she says.

Hello Klean's efficacious formula impressed our judges, who highlighted how well this helped counteract the effects of hard water on their hair. It's the brand's specialism, and its innovative formulas are often found in beauty editors' showers to help prevent hair colour from fading, reduce scalp irritation and ensure hair looks shinier and healthier. It comes in two versions: one for light and one for dark hair colours, to leave lengths looking and feeling their best.

"I really love this product," says freelance beauty journalist Laura Pearson. "After just one use, my hair felt so much cleaner and softer compared to other products. It felt so deeply cleansed like I’d washed it twice, but I hadn’t. After using it for multiple weeks, my hair was lasting longer between washes as if it had been properly 'detoxed' from any excess product," she says.

It also impressed our managing editor Poppy Nash. "I have hard water and noticed when I first moved into my house that my hair was suffering. Our judges' favourite conscious hair product was Hairstory's New Wash, which came out head and shoulders above its competitors. This non-conventional shampoo features a cream formula that cleanses roots whilst leaving ends hydrated. Its ability to leave our judges' lengths looking lustrous and cleansed—as well as its sulphate and phthalate-free formula that is also biodegradable (making it kind to sensitive scalps and the planet)—made it our top pick for our conscious hair product category. We also love that it comes in three varieties depending on the dryness or oiliness of your hair.

"I love that it's shampoo and conditioner in one," says facialist, manicurist and tanning expert Emily Rose Lansley. "I like my shampoo to foam to feel clean and this doesn't, but my hair looks nice and shiny—I even have volume, which is great for my fine hair," she says.

Those with curls need a curl product that can create hold without the dreaded crunch. It's a tall order, but Camille Rose has delivered. Ideal for wash-and-go styles, this curling jelly leaves your curl pattern defined, hydrated and bouncy, thanks to nourishing coconut and pomegranate oils, aloe vera, vitamin E and B12. Our judges loved how it left their curls soft, with definition lasting beyond the first day.

"It’s one of the few styling gels I’ve used that holds my hair without making it crunchy—I love the results," says beauty content creator Lesley Buckle. "My curls feel really soft and the definition actually lasts beyond day one, which is rare for me." Who What Wear UK's endorsement sales director Efi Mandrides agrees. "This product defines and tames my curly hair very well and smells lovely too—I would definitely recommend it," she says.

Sam McKnight is one of the industry's most esteemed hairstylists, so it's unsurprising that our judges adored the Cool Curls Refresh & Revive Mist, which does exactly what it says on the bottle. From refreshing curls in between hair washes to leaving curls and coils perfectly defined, our judges loved how versatile this lightweight yet hydrating mist is—not forgetting the incredible scent that it left in their curls.

"I absolutely loved this mist," says makeup artist and journalist Rose Gallagher. "I’m still learning my curly habits, and one thing that hugely impacts my ability to follow recommendations is that so many formulas are too rich for thin hair like mine," she says. "This mist worked perfectly to reduce frizz without weighing down my thin hair. I also really love the chic packaging."

It also impressed our social media editor, Megan Storey. "I’m so happy to have found this product! I love using it on day three hair to revive my waves and tame the frizz," she says. "My hair doesn’t feel heavy with product afterwards and it certainly looks 'refreshed and revived'. Bonus points for the cool packaging and gorgeous scent."

It's no secret that there are hundreds of hair serums out there. But Authentic Beauty Concept's Glow Spray Serum stood out as our judges' favourite amongst the several we tested this year. From the does-it-all formula with heat and colour protection to the chic pink glass bottle that instantly elevates a bathroom counter (not forgetting the luxurious scent), there was nothing our judges didn't love about this hero hair serum. Each reported how healthy and shiny this serum left their lengths.

"I really like this product, from the aesthetically pleasing pink glass bottle to the lovely relaxing scent that makes it so enjoyable to use," says Pearson. "The mist is a light lotion that feels so nice, but what’s best about this product is that it combines heat protection, colour maintenance, hair strengthening and environmental protection so effectively. An amazing multi-tasker!" she says.

It also caught the attention of junior beauty editor, Grace Lindsay. "I colour my hair a lot and haven’t come across anything like this before. Not only is the packaging cute, but this spray really enhanced my highlights and left my hair with salon-worthy shine," she says. "A big plus is that it also doubles as a heat protector. I could see myself buying this again thanks to the results."

Regular hair treatments hold the power to supercharge your haircare routine, and Alterna's Caviar Restructuring Bond Repair Masque did just that, scoring 10s across the board. This leave-in mask features bond-repair technology to rebuild broken bonds in strands, leaving all hair textures looking and feeling healthier and stronger. The leave-in formula seamlessly complements a hair-wash routine, without the need to rinse it out like traditional hair masks.

"I would recommend this to help with breakage, as my hair definitely felt stronger after use," says makeup artist Michelle Leandra. "The texture is a smooth cream and only a small amount is needed. I also like that it has heat-protection properties," she says.

It also impressed our beauty editor, Eleanor Vousden. "This made an incredible difference to my hair! My coloured hair is prone to looking dull and frizzy, but this leave-in treatment left it so smooth and glossy—even my boyfriend noticed a difference," she says. "The leave-in treatment doesn’t weigh hair down, but I both see and feel a difference in the health of my hair. It feels stronger, looks healthier and is much more manageable, thanks to the smoothing benefits. Bond-repair products have become a saturated market, but this is one of—if not the best—I’ve tried yet."

Gisou's hair oil has the ability to make any beauty editor's heart race, but it particularly blew away our expert judges, who loved this hair oil's versatility as a styling product to nourish all hair types and textures. Featuring honey as its star ingredient, it adds hydration and a glossy shine to lengths, all whilst offering heat protection as well as effortlessly smoothing flyaways on dry hair. The indulgent scent won it extra points.

"I really enjoyed this oil—it made my hair feel really nice and left me with a nice shine after styling," says hairstylist Dionne Smith. "You can also use it as a scalp treatment cocktailed with a conditioner," she says. It was also a hit with Lindsay. "I loved this hair oil! The packaging is so nice, it smells incredible and it made my hair so soft and shiny. I am a big fan of the brand and this didn’t disappoint," she says.

Cantu's Protective Styles Hair Freshener is our very deserving winner in this category. It can be used on braids, wigs, locs and weaves to instantly refresh and soothe the scalp. It makes it quick and easy to extend the life of protective styles without a deep shampoo—a quick spritz is all you need.

"What I like about this product is that it does what it says on the tin. It's a great way to quickly refresh the hair," says Smith. "It smells nice, feels weightless and really does remove odours, leaving the hair feeling fresh again."

It also got the stamp of approval from our fashion editor, Remy Farrell. "Finally, a product for protective styles that refreshes hair without having to start from scratch with a deep wash! After fluffing up my braids by trying to intermittently tackle build-up with clarifying shampoo and scalp treatments, this manages to let my scalp breathe and adds freshness in just five minutes— ideal for hair textures that dry shampoo doesn't serve," she says. "It's light, has a mousse-y texture, a lovely fragrance and gives impressive long-term results."

Cloud Nine's hair tools are highly regarded amongst the industry's top hairstylists, and The Airshot Hair Dryer particularly blew our judges away—no pun intended. The anti-static tech features negative ions to ensure a polished result, and the mineral heating element inside the hair dryer helps to prevent moisture loss each time you dry your hair. This is a total game-changer that makes the chore of blow-drying your hair a treat.

"This hair dryer really impressed me. It’s sleek, modern and features amazing technology," says Lindsay. "I love that it comes with a diffuser for curly hair, and the self-clean mode is a big plus. It is easy to use and switch between different heat settings, drying my hair in no time," she says.

There are now several hair multi-stylers out there to choose from. But out of every styling tool we tried, Shark's Flexstyle came out on top amongst our hard-to-please judges. Our testers applauded the range of attachments that work across hair textures and made styling super quick and easy. With the option to create bouncy blowouts, super-sleek, polished looks and dry your hair; this is one hard-working hot tool you won't regret adding to your routine.

"I absolutely loved this," says Lindsay. "These attachments worked a lot better on my thick, naturally wavy hair. It comes with different heat and speed settings and a cool-shot feature to lock your style in place. I also found that lightweight and easy to use," she says. "It is still quite an investment, but one I would happily make myself."

For affiliates manager Jerrylyn Saguiped, it was all about how quick and easy it made styling her long, thick hair. "Long gone are the days of achy arms from holding up a curling wand or hair dryer, as the Shark FlexStyle makes it incredibly quick and easy to style your hair," she says. We had to award a highly commended accolade to GHD's Duet Blowdry Hair Dryer Brush, which also impressed our panel as one of the best hot brush launches of 2024. It creates a bouncy blowout that genuinely looks like you've come straight from the salon. The large, round brush captures a lot of hair (making it great for those with very thick or long locks) and provides great tension as it twists through the lengths to leave you with tonnes of volume at the roots, bounce through the ends and a smooth, shiny gloss. The fact it takes hair from wet to dry was also appreciated by our testers.

"This is an amazing hot brush, which really does give a blowdry finish without the need for a hair dryer and a round brush. It easily streamlines the process from wet to styled," says Vousden. "The brush head captures a lot of hair— which is great for someone like me with both long and thick hair—and gives a volumised bounce at the roots through to the lengths with a salon-worthy shine. It left my hair really smooth and also took no time at all to dry."

The hot brush also got a thumbs-up from hairstylist James Lear, who used the tool on his clients. "I loved how smooth this tool made the hair from wet, and how close it got to the root, allowing you to create real volume," he says. "Even on frizzy hair, the results from wet were quite surprising to me! You can get a really good grip and hold, which allows you to create a blowdried look."

The flexible design fits effortlessly in the palm of your hand and glides through the hair as gently as if you were combing your fingers through. It was designed for the founder's wife who lost her hair after illness. When she saw regrowth, she wanted a brush that would detangle very gently. Both innovative in its design and purpose, this hair brush is a very deserving winner and received high praise from our judges.

"I love this brush! It’s such an amazing addition to my hair-wash routine," says Lear. "I suffer from a dry, itchy and sometimes flaky scalp. Every time I wash my hair, I apply a scalp mask first, then use this brush to exfoliate, leaving my scalp feeling super clean, fresh and free from debris."

Our judges with long hair noted how gently and easily it detangled, too. "This product is really great for getting out knots easily, especially after washing my hair," says ecommerce analyst, Sophie Cookson. "It left my hair really smooth, and it glides seamlessly through the hair, so you aren’t pulling at it."

Finding a product that actually works to enhance hair growth can prove tricky, but Nooānce's LED helmet gets the seal of approval from our expert judges as a smart investment for boosting hair density. In fact, our judge (a cosmetic nurse) is seeing promising results from her patients in-clinic.

"I have tried lots of different hair-growth and thickening products and vitamins over the years, but Viviscal is the only one I have noticed makes a serious and significant difference," says senior business and insights manager Davina Coleridge. Storey tried the shade Cinnamon Brown and received compliments left, right and centre. "I dye my hair fairly often to cover some (incredibly stubborn!) greys. When I want more defined and separated curls, I add a light gel from Boucléme that I mix with a bit of water and scrunch into my hair while it’s wet. I'll usually leave it to air dry or if I have time I use a diffuser."

For a long time, I thought I needed to wash my hair every day if I wanted bouncy, defined, thick-looking curls. Finally, I decided to listen to what my mum had told me to do for my entire life: twists. Where French plaits can leave the hair looking too crimped and angular, two-strand braids (known as twists) keep curls rounded and smooth but, crucially, protected as you sleep."

What: "My fiancé and I both have curly hair which means we often share hair products, especially when travelling. How to Make Your Curls Last

There's nothing more frustrating than using a curling wand to create your dream hair and then realising that the style doesn't last longer than an hour. In a bid to stop this happening, I reached out to Luke Hersheson, hairstylist and Hershesons CEO, for his top tips. "If you want extra hold, I would use the Hershesons Zhoosh Foam, on dry hair, rub it in, and that will give you a little extra hold, particularly if your hair is on the slightly thinner side," he explains.

It's also important to prep the hair before styling to help keep your curls in place. "When it comes to prepping the hair before using a curling wand, I like to use the Hershesons Almost Everything Cream," says Hersheson. "It helps to smooth any flyaways and gives a nice sheen to the hair; it’s also a protectant at the same time."

Who What Wear UK Next in Beauty Awards 2023: Best in Good Hair Day 

When it comes to finding a good shampoo, we expect to pay a pretty penny for a sophisticated formula that leaves our hair cleansed, soft and shiny. But the shampoo that impressed us so the most comes in at only £5. Monday Haircare's Smooth Shampoo is designed to have a smoothing effect on curly, coily and frizz-prone hair, and our judges agree. Props to Monday for leaving our hair—and bank accounts—looking healthy.

"This smells delicious and leaves hair feeling clean and fresh. It has lots of natural ingredients and is also vegan and cruelty-free," says makeup artist Mira Palmer. "The price is also incredible at £5, and it's great for my curly hair, leaving it frizz-free, soft and smooth."

"It gives a really nice, smooth finish," says Who What Wear UK affiliate editor Emily Dawes. "My hair is frizzy with breakage, and it gave a really nice, smooth blowdry after use. It’s great value for such a big size, and I’d give it extra innovation points for being so affordable without sulphates. It's also PETA-certified and made from 100% recyclable packaging."

It even protects against UV rays. The lightweight formulation mists onto the hair, weightlessly imparting a glossy finish on all hair types. It's the new overachiever of our judges' haircare routines.

"My toxic trait is that I never use heat protectants before blow-drying or styling my hair, so I was really keen to try Fable & Mane’s Leave-In Conditioner," says Who What Wear UK affiliate manager Jerrylyn Saguiped. "I’m pleased to report that it doesn’t leave my hair with a sticky or greasy feeling, and it also makes my hair smell lovely long after my wash day. The ends feel less dry than usual, likely thanks to the hydrating aloe vera."

A decent hair dryer can be a significant investment, so we scrupulously tested our entrants, and Zuvi's incredibly innovative Halo Hair Dryer is a very worthy winner. Unlike other hair dryers that use significant heat to dry the hair (which draws out moisture from the middle of the hair shaft), Zuvi's technology only dries moisture on the outside of the strand, keeping its integrity at optimum health.

"The hair dryer is efficient and leaves the hair looking visibly shinier," says Charlotte Mensah, award-winning hairstylist and owner and artistic director of Hair Lounge. However, it takes longer to dry thicker and afro-textured hair."

Who What Wear UK copy editor Georgia Seago notes that whilst it's certainly an investment purchase, it's worth it if you spend a lot of time and money on your hair routine already. "I love it because it’s quiet, compact, lightweight and quick, but I do have long hair which I get coloured and put a lot of heat on (I regularly use a hair dryer, straighteners, blowdry brush and a curling iron), and I only use salon-grade haircare products, so it makes sense for someone like me," she says. "This hair dryer definitely uses a cooler temperature and is kinder to my hair than others I’ve tried, so I can see why it would be a great option for sensitive scalps and compromised or thinning hair. I have a lot of hair, but this makes light work of drying it, leaving it super-soft and smooth with noticeably less frizz."

Dedicated curl products have long been overlooked, but thankfully, in recent years the status quo has moved on to celebrate texture in all its crowning glory. Now, there are more options than ever to make curls and coils shine. However, it was Holy Curls 06 Oil Serum that captured our panels attention the most. Our judges praised this weightless oil-serum hybrid which can be used on wet hair prior to styling, or as a refresher to add lustre and definition to lengths. Its uses know no bounds; it can also be used as a scalp oil, primer and hydrator to lock in moisture. A big round of applause for this all-rounder.

"This has a beautiful balance between oil and serum," says beauty content creator Lesley Buckle. "It’s not too heavy or greasy and gives my hair a nice amount of shine without looking like it's loaded with product. I love that there are no silicones, as these can build up on my hair easily. Instead, it uses a natural alternative called hemisqualane to help with frizz."

Serum can often make or break a hair look—too heavy and it weighs hair down, too light and it might not give adequate results. Alfaparf Milano's Semi di Lino Cristalli Liquidi passed our tests with flying colours, lending the hair a healthy gloss whilst protecting from heat.

"I was initially apprehensive about using an oily serum as a heat protectant for obvious reasons," says freelance beauty journalist Ata-Owaji Victor. "So I was pleasantly surprised to see that this serum left my hair feeling light and without any visible heat damage after I blow-dried it. I used more than the advised one to two drops on my afro hair due to the coily texture of the strands, and I felt like there was a genuine improvement in the look of my hair. I can’t wait to try it on wigs and weaves too."

It also received high praise from Who What Wear UK shopping editor Remy Farrell. "Those with fine hair might want to use this product sparingly, but dry hair like mine easily took to this thirst-quenching oil that smoothed flyaways and left my hair feeling silky-soft and glossy," she says. "Some oils can sit on the scalp and weigh hair down, but this creates a shine that absorbs without leaving too much of a greasy residue."

Most of us can benefit from a good hair oil, whether it be to replenish moisture to heat-damaged strands, add definition and gloss to curls or as an intensive pre-shampoo treatment to restore lack-lustre locks with an expensive shine. Our winner, Monpure's Ultralight Healthy Hair Oil, does exactly what is says on the very sleek bottle. Just a couple of drops make light work of reducing frizz and adding shine, all without weighing down lengths.

"This oil is so great for smoothing my curls and helping with frizz, and it’s not heavy at all," says Buckle. "I love that it uses vegan keratin to help strengthen strands and protect from heat damage. It leaves my hair so shiny and glossy and a little goes a long way."

It also impressed Who What Wear UK deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. "It takes a lot for a hair product—especially one formulated for use on dry hair—to impress and sway me, but Monpure's Ultralight Healthy Hair Oil has done it," she says. "It’s incredibly lightweight and doesn't weigh my hair down, which is always a concern when using an oil. Immediately, I noticed enhanced shine across my locks, which were also soft to the touch. The biggest selling point for me, however, was its ability to eradicate my frizz and smooth flyaways. Whilst it's a premium product with a price tag to match, it's so efficacious, and the jumbo-sized bottle (a whopping 100ml, and you only need a few drops) means it’ll last ages—the cost per use is truly a small price to pay for luxurious hair."

"It's a cult product for a reason," says freelance beauty editor Mica Ricketts. "This treatment really works wonders for my hair, which is naturally dry and prone to frizz. After I’ve used this my strands always feel stronger and more elastic, and they look smoother and glossier too. I love that you use it before shampooing (I can rarely be bothered with post-shampoo hair masks), and my hair just feels so much healthier after I’ve used it."

"The product is easy to use and I like that you can leave it in for however long you need depending on how damaged your hair is. "It's been a while since I used a salt spray, as I often found they’d leave my hair crispy and tangled, but this one is a dream," says Ricketts. "Not only does it smell incredible, but it helps to lend a bit of an artfully tousled look to my often unruly waves whilst leaving them soft and shiny."

Cookson also rates its talents at lending a beachy look whilst protecting the hair. "This salt spray is perfect to use on wet hair to add some volume, or you can also use it on dry hair to create a natural texture that only the sea can usually give you. It features ingredients that help with UVA and UVB damage, which is an added bonus, and it also has vitamin B to help condition the hair."

Any hair tool that makes styling our hair easier and faster is a winner in our books. Our judges were seriously impressed by The Beachwaver Rotating Hair Iron, which rotates your hair around the barrel with the click of a button. Rotating in both directions, it allows you to create those face-framing, tumbling waves in no time at all. Thanks to the size of the curling barrel, it gives you S-shaped waves that can be brushed out for an effortless look that stays in place all day long. Featuring a long cord and three heat settings, our judges were really impressed with how easy and fast this tool is to use.

"This iron makes achieving those coveted beachy waves impossibly easy," says Seago. "Mastering the technique is key to getting that cool-girl hair, and because this iron basically is the technique, you can’t really go wrong, as long as you clamp your hair into the iron facing the direction that you want the wave to go. You just press and hold either the left or right arrow on the body of the wand, it twirls your hair around the barrel, then you release the clamp for soft, uniform curls which you can comb out for more of a loose wave. Using this cuts my waving time in half," she says.

It also received high praise from Samantha Cusick, hairstylist and founder of Samantha Cusick London. "It simplifies the process of creating beautiful waves and ensures they last all day. When it comes to performance, it truly delivers," she says. "It's a fantastic choice for achieving gorgeous, long-lasting waves effortlessly."

The spotlight on scalp care has increased in recent years, meaning that there now are more and more targeted scalp products on the market to choose from. We'll admit that choosing one can be a real head-scratcher, but our panel felt that Ouai's Scalp Serum soothed sensitive scalps without weighing hair down. Thanks to its gel consistency, it sinks in quickly without leaving a sticky residue, making it a scalp-soothing product you'll want to apply every day. It boasts a number of extracts that help to soothe irritated scalps, all whilst encouraging thicker hair growth from the root. What are your top tips for caring for curly and Afro hair?

JD: Deep-condition, air-dry where possible, moisturise the ends of your hair and embrace your texture wholeheartedly! Our hair thrives when it is well moisturised, building a good-quality deep conditioner or mask into my washday was one of the best things I have ever done for my hair.

Air-drying my hair in twists or plaits allowed me to drastically cut down on the amount of heat I was using on my hair. (Heat damage plagued my hair throughout my teens.) It took a mental shift for me to move away from heat-styled hair constantly to enjoying, experimenting and embracing my hair in all of its forms, with and without heat.

The ends are the oldest part of your hair. They need to be treated with all the TLC possible. Find a water-based leave-in conditioner your hair loves, and keep those ends moisturised. We're so used to focusing on our scalp when styling and maintaining our hair when the real gold is at the ends. That's where length retention is at!

Embracing your texture is more mental than anything else. Learning to love your hair in all of its forms—wet, dry, long, short, shrunken, stretched—allows you to unlock a new degree of freedom in your own beauty journey and makes your hair journey and hair maintenance that much more enjoyable. Stop comparing your hair to others and work with what you have—own it!

What are your favourite haircare products, and how do you factor them into your routine?

JD: I am a sucker for a good moisturising shampoo, a protein mask (I’ll alternate between protein versus moisture depending on the style I’m wearing or taking down), a lightweight yet moisturising leave-in conditioner (I have fine strands so butters, etc., weigh my hair down) and a gel.

What are common misconceptions about curly and Afro hair?

Lesley Buckle: I get asked a lot if I just wake up with my hair the way it is, and often, there's a lot more work involved. But for those who have curly hair, I'd say a common misconception is that there's one product that will solve any hair woes or you can copy someone else's hair routine and expect the same results. Even with the same hair type, every head of curls behaves so differently. Lots of factors like hair thickness, density, length, porosity and your environment, etc., all have a role to play besides curl texture, so figuring curls out can take a lot of experimentation.

What are your top tips for caring for curly and Afro hair?

LB: I don't want to state the obvious, but being cautious with overusing heat, dye and bleaching is really important, as all of these can affect the amount of protein available in our curls and as a result how strong they are. The way curls naturally bend can make them more susceptible to damage, so we just have to be a bit more conscious and gentler with how we handle them. I still use heat, and I have had my hair coloured, but I'm very aware of still exercising caution and using products to help restore strength. It's really about finding that balance between caring for your hair but still getting to enjoy it.

Depending on the curl type, deep-conditioning is likely to be needed regularly to hydrate, and it's good to do styles that are not too tight to avoid any breakage around the hairline. Really getting to know and understand what your hair likes and doesn't is key, too. For example, mine seems to really like heat because my hair is low-porosity, which means I usually need warmth or humidity when using styling product to actually get my hair to feel moisturised. This means I'll usually style in the shower, and I diffuse with a blow-dryer quite often to get the best results for me. Someone else might find because their curls are more porous that heat has the opposite impact for them, causing lots of frizz, so maybe they prefer to style out of the shower and then air-dry.

What are your favourite haircare products and why, and how do you factor them into your routine?

LB: My job as a content creator (and because I've always been obsessed with haircare) means I've tried a lot of products, so it's really hard for me to pick favourites. There are so many amazing products available, but some solid brands I always go to are Aveda, Dizziak, Bouclème, Kérastase Curl Manifesto and Living Proof, but there are many more I love! My hair is naturally quite dry, so my favourite types of products to use are always moisturising formulas and deep conditioners, as the effect is satisfyingly instant. For me, the key to a good routine is having a gentle, moisturising shampoo for regular cleansing, a clarifying shampoo for removing heavier build-up every now and then, a deep conditioner to hydrate and a styling product that moisturises but also gives my hair enough hold for some curl definition. Oils can be really helpful, too, but I tend to use these on my ends as a final styling touch to lock in moisture."

What are common misconceptions about curly and Afro hair?

Leal Alexander: The biggest misconceptions are that curly and Afro hair is difficult/unprofessional/unkempt. I think a lot of it comes from unrealistic beauty standards, which can then become internalised from a young age, especially when it comes to "frizz." I always hear people say things like, "My hair is just so frizzy," or "My hair looks wild." Sadly, I don't think that will ever go away, which is why I think it's important to be an example and dispel these myths. Everyone has an issue with something relating to their hair, so

instead, I think we should focus on embodying and celebrating the individuality and versatility of our curly and Afro hair! Personally, I'm much happier with my natural hair than I was with straight hair, and it's much easier to maintain. Before going natural, I'd spend one to two hours straightening my hair a day. Now I wash my hair once a week, and it typically makes it to the end of the week. Whilst the first two years of my transition from relaxed hair to fully natural were difficult at times, I’m actually much happier with my natural hair than I was with straight hair, so it was worth the journey. It just takes time.

What are your top tips for caring for curly and Afro hair?

LA: I try not to be prescriptive and instead encourage trial and error! Be inspired but experiment because what works for someone else's hair won't always

work for yours. You may have a different lifestyle, environment, set of requirements or just hair texture—you need to find what works for you.

Hydration is key for curly and Afro hair. We are prone to dryness. Water and leave-in styling products are necessary for maintaining curl definition, if that's your goal. One thing I do is stand under the shower for one to two minutes to make sure my hair is fully saturated with water before applying any product, which leads me on to my next point! Less is more when it comes to product. It's so easy to think you need to pile it on, but how you apply them is just as important. Take the time to really work the product and water into your curls (and scalp), and they will thank you!

What are your favourite haircare products, and how do you factor them into your routine?

LA: Some of my favourite products are from brands I have loved and used for years, like Trepadora, Innersense and Bouclème. But my favourite styling combo at the moment (and has been for a few years)

is the Innersense Quiet Calm Curl Control Styling Cream and I Create Hold Styling Gel. Whilst I don’t like to use the word perfect, it's the closest I get to

perfection in a wash-and-go: long-lasting, hydrated and defined curls every single time, and they aren't weighed down and don't give me build-up.

My current favourite conditioner is the Biolage Hydrasource Conditioning Balm. It's perfect for detangling and really just gets the job done!

Up Next: Tracee Ellis Ross's Pattern Beauty Has Landed—Here Are My First Impressions

I have a confession to make. I’ve been guilty of neglecting my hair. Like so many others, I’d bought into the trope that coily, kinky and Afro hair was "difficult” and would need far more time than I was willing to invest to keep it healthy. After a rocky journey of poorly recommended relaxers, weaves, clip-in extensions and too much direct heat, it was during lockdown that I stripped everything back and decided to start over with my relationship with my hair.

While I was giving my natural hair the chance to recover and readopting the protective styles of my childhood (thank god for box braids), across the pond, a brand would be launching that would change the way we thought about celebrity-fronted brands and, in turn, Afro haircare.

Tracee Ellis Ross created Pattern with a core mission to serve the needs of the curly, coily and tight-textured community, to celebrate Black beauty and be an active space for uplifting and loving the community’s natural beauty. After 10 years of conducting her own market research and formulation, Ross launched Pattern in the U.S. in 2020—comprising an entire washday routine: shampoo, conditioner, mist and gel (plus styling tools and brushes)—but for those of us eagerly watching on social media, it would be two more years before we could finally (!) shop the range in Boots for ourselves.

I had the opportunity to road-test some of the line before the official launch, and it’s safe to say that I had plenty of thoughts, but trust me—it’s all good. There is often some trepidation about celebrity beauty launches and whether they will have the efficacy of an established brand, but Ross knows good curls.

My first thought was just how impressive the size of the range was. There are in fact five conditioners alone (three for thin to thick hair textures, an intensive and a leave-in conditioner), and my second thought was how good it smells. The usual curly hair favourites are present—coconut, avocado and jojoba oils, shea butter and aloe vera—but also the unexpected but refreshing additions of green matcha tea, Irish moss and chia seeds that make the range smell like, well, nothing I’ve really smelled before. I’m going to say the closest thing I can think of is "holiday skin.”

I started by washing my hair with the Cleansing Shampoo. As its a clarifying shampoo, it doesn't create the overly soapy, foamy lather we usually associate with deep cleaning, so I initially washed my hair twice to make sure it it was definitely clean. The formula has a light, non-sticky feeling with no residue, and before I even added any conditioner, my curls looked springier. A good start. 

Next, I opted for the Heavy Conditioner, and anyone with 4C curls like mine will appreciate that the conditioner bottle is far bigger than the shampoo one, as we know we’re going to liberally apply any kind of conditioner. At this point in my routine, I usually detangle with a wide-tooth comb, so I reached for a wet brush and noticed just how shiny and defined my curls were already. Not a knotty, soapy ball but glossy little spirals that, after years of aggressive straightening, I'm happy to see back in full force. 

After rinsing it out, I wanted to give the leave-in conditioner a try, and my preferred way of deep conditioning after a long time in braids is to use a heated cap to help the product better deeper permeate the hair shaft. After 20 minutes or so, I wasn't entirely sure just how deeply the conditioner had worked, but the next day would be the true test. 

Knowing I would be braiding my hair again the next day, I slept with my hair in twists to minimise tangling, an act that comes from years of eye-watering, comb-breaking experiences. As I waited with held breath for the inevitable moment my hairdresser would run a comb through my hair and hit a snag, instead, it slid through. Running my hands through my hair to verify just how easy the process was, I was happy to find that not only was my hair easier to tease, but it was softer too. Gone were the crunchy, frazzled ends that prompted me to switch to protective styles in the first place. 

Although I don't currently wear my hair in its natural Afro state every day, I'm keen to test the Strong Hold Gel (£25) to keep my edges and canerows tidy in the meantime (but it will have some way to go to rival the reliable Schwarzkopf Got2b Glued Gel). But overall, I'm surprised (and impressed) that Pattern managed to create an effective and easy routine to take the guesswork out of caring for Afro hair. It's a simple wash-condition-style regime that you can personalise for your own hair thickness, so no more one-size-fits-all products that are relegated to specialist shops. So here is something that I never thought I would say, but I'm actually looking forward to my next washday.

I’ll start with a confession: I was well into my late 20s when I finally cracked the perfect haircare routine, products and all. Before that, it was all trial and error, and it wasn't a pretty sight. Identifying my hair type was half the battle, and the next hurdle was figuring out which products worked for natural hair. This might sound relatively easy, but with so many products on the market, where do you start?

Type 4 hair is fragile and extremely susceptible to dehydration and breakage. Ekwy Nnene, the founder of haircare brand Equi Botanic, tells me that there are two main objectives to consider when it comes to caring for type 4 hair: keeping hair moisturised and preventing damage to ends.

Type hair 4 comes with its own set of delicate requirements, and caring for my hair hasn’t been an easy feat. I’ve been on a long quest to figure out the best products and practices for my hair. Nnene, however, has transformed her daughter’s hair and helped many women on their natural-hair journey. What are her top three tips for caring for type 4 hair? "Always detangle before washing to reduce breakage,” she says. She also recommends "oiling ends to prevent hair strands from getting caught in drying fabrics like necks of sweaters, caps, cotton pillowcases and synthetic braids.” Most importantly, Nnene recommends "washing your scalp thoroughly” because product build-up can lead to a host of problems.

Knowing my hair type and curl pattern has significantly improved my haircare routine. However, these are not the only factors at play. Our hair is affected by several things, including porosity, density and thickness. Yes, this complicates things, but you might just have to kiss a few frogs before you find your perfect army of products. I've always thought of my hair as having a mind of its own, especially when I'm in between washes. Some days (with the right products, that is) my hair is soft, manageable, and tangle-free, while others it seems to want to ride the disaster train a little too hard.

To be honest, I've always struggled to embrace my natural texture. I have thick, tighter curls that were tough to manage growing up. So naturally, I turned to heat styling to help alleviate the burden a bit. A few years (and a lot of heat damage) later, I decided it was time to truly embrace my unrefined texture and learn to style my hair other ways. Of course, I went down a Pinterest hole to look for ideas (as one does) and found some surprisingly simple styles that anyone with textured hair can embrace, really. Fact: Coily hair types look incredibly chic in their natural state. But if you're looking for a way to accentuate your natural texture without fully letting it roam free, pinned-back pigtails are the perfect solution. All you'll need is a bit of styling gel (or cream), hair elastics, and bobby pins to create an effortlessly cool look.

Now, this über-natural hairstyle can be a bit deceiving in terms of how simple it is. For looser curl types, it can be easier to maintain throughout the day, but in my personal experience, the tighter the coil, the more prone to frizz. That doesn't mean you can't still make it easy with the right products. You'll definitely want to invest in a curl-defining gel and leave-in conditioner. Both will ensure maximum hold and reduced frizz for all-day wear.

Wrapping our hair at night is something that’s been instilled in many of us Afro or curly-hair kids.
