Though fall technically just started, one specific handbag has already established itself as the season's front-runner, and not just. There really is no competition (at least not yet). Saint Laurent's Le 5 à 7 hobo bag, with its slouchy shape and spacious interior, has been a fan favourite for a few seasons now, constantly showing up on the shoulders of A-listers like Hailey Bieber and Laura Harrier. It wasn't until the French fashion house released a calf-hair version printed with leopard spots that the slouchy yet structured style reached viral status, selling out in record time on Saint Laurent's website. Now, following an impressive showing during Paris Fashion Week, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that fall 2024's first true It bag is here, and its presence in this year's zeitgeist is nowhere near its peak.

Bieber carried the bag back in July during the latter stage of her pregnancy, styling it with an equally talked-about leather bomber jacket, black trousers, and her signature '80s earrings for a church service with her husband. With an all-black backdrop, the spotted nature of her purse stood out significantly, leaving fans of the Rhode founder's style to inquire about the anti-quiet bag from the get-go. When Kravitz was seen around the same time at a dinner with Saint Laurent's creative director, Anthony Vaccarello, at Sushi Park in Los Angeles, the leopard-print bag was also in tow.

Two days later, after wearing a leopard-print coat for Quali day, she paired the bag with a simple, bateau-neck midi dress in black and an alternative pair of flat sandals for a walk in the paddock with the couple's dachshund Leo.

The oversize open-top bag, which features the same golden hardware and leopard-printed calf-hair exterior as the Le 5 à 7, was spotted not once, not twice, but three times in late September, first on Bieber, then again on Harrier, and last, on Kate Moss.

Bieber paired her Bea with a matching Toteme leopard-print coat, black trousers, and red Adidas Sambas for a church service with Justin in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Harrier and Moss both debuted theirs in Paris—Harrier at Charles de Gaulle airport, where she was spotted alongside her fiancé, Sam Jarou, sporting the same '80s-style leather Saint Laurent bomber jacket that Bella Hadid and Bieber can't stop wearing as well as black yoga pants, a hoodie, and Adidas sneakers, and Moss outside of the Ritz Paris, styled with a black cashmere sweater, leggings, and knee-high boots.

In my opinion, any contender for the prime spot of Ultimate Everyday Handbag has to tick some specific boxes. It's funny how some fashion brands become part of your life story without you realising. Coach, for me, is one of them. My first "real" handbag—back when I still wore skinny jeans and spent hours on Tumblr—was a chocolate-brown Coach shoulder bag with brass hardware that felt impossibly grown-up.

Each member of the Who What Wear UK team has a favourite Mulberry bag—don't we all? However, it's becoming harder and harder to choose just one favorite because the luxury lifestyle brand continues to up the ante when it comes to both its designs and its approach to sustainability. And just when we thought the Lily (aka the most practical, neat and long-lasting multi-strap bag) couldn't get any better, along comes a carbon-neutral version.

Influencers, editors and many stylish customers have been turning to this signature shape, with its instantly recognisable Postman's lock, since it was first introduced back in 2010. Some handbags don't stand the test of time, but thanks to the Lily's versatility and minimalistic chain-strap design, it has surpassed a fleeting trend moment and become a classic buy. And now that the clever Mulberry team is using innovative methods to produce a carbon-neutral range of 12 different Lily bags, its status has shot up once more. We like our investment buys to be both infinitely re-wearable and created consciously so they have as little impact on the environment as possible.

So what goes into making the Lily Zero collection? First of all, the styles in the Lily Zero family are made from carbon-neutral leather and produced by skilled craftspeople in Mulberry's carbon-neutral Somerset factories. It's the next step in Mulberry's big plan to go net zero on carbon emissions by 2035. Even the German tannery that supplies the leather of these lovely bags commissioned its own solar park on-site earlier this year in order to support its other renewable energy sources. And before you wonder about the environmental toll of getting one of these bags from Germany into your hands, you should know that Mulberry has undertaken a full "life cycle assessment" to analyse the carbon emissions of the range. This analysis includes components, transport, and packaging, all of which have been additionally offset with the World Land Trust, the brand's carbon offsetting partner. Want to know one of the most common questions I get asked as a fashion editor? I'm not one to shy away from bold accessories. In fact, in the last month alone, I've purchased a zebra-print belt, embellished slides, and enough rainbow jewellery to rival any eight-year-old's collection. However, when it comes to investment bags, my practical gene kicks in, and I always end up opting for classic styles and timeless colours to ensure I'll get endless use out of each purchase. The accessory I currently have my sights set on? This new quilted black leather bag from Balmain.

I've seen it used in so many different outfits all over Instagram, which means it has incredible cost per wear potential. It would be truly difficult to find a look that isn't made cooler by way of this handbag, and these nine are currently topping my list of ones I'm ready to copy with my aforementioned chosen style. 

The quilted leather and gold chain detail on the bag really stand out against a neutral slip dress. Finishing this look off with everyone's favourite summer 2019 sandals is really just the cherry on top.

Previously, the words "practical" and "fashion" would be rarely found together, but thankfully, that's all changed. Dad trainers are an excellent example of this, as are the thick-strap sandals that are set to dominate summer 2019. And who doesn't experience pure joy upon discovering a dress with pockets?

Don't get me wrong—I'm still very much here for high heels and fitted clothing, however, the older I get, the more I place emphasis on making my wardrobe a more practical place. As such, I now tend to only buy bags that have the same distinctive feature: a crossbody strap.

Small crossbody bags are my daily go-to, as they allow me to keep my hands free for using my phone, carrying shopping bags, or most likely, eating a cookie that I picked up during the five-minute walk between my house to the train station. The petite size also means they're less cumbersome than larger bag styles, making them ideal for travelling, too.

On a recent Sunday, I headed to run some errands, and within an hour I'd had three people comment on how much they liked my handbag. It's nice at any time to get a compliment of course, but it feels even better when it's a high street piece. As a handbag enthusiast, I can speak for the feeling of stepping out with a luxury piece that you've saved up for or treated yourself to, but there's an added element of joy to be found in saying 'thanks, it's H&M!'

One thing to know about me is I adore handbags. They're my favourite part of an outfit, and something I always look to first.
