We might be moving towards peak summertime but if you took a walk around the city, you might not have guessed it. With jackets and cosy knits still required, you would be forgiven for thinking we're exiting the summer season, not entering it.

Arriving at the party hand-in-hand with her boyfriend, Oli Green, Miller looked effortlessly stylish in a pair of black, high-waist jeans. You can imagine my delight when I saw this, as I tend favour black denim for evenings out where blue may feel a touch too casual. I'm calling it, it's time to start shopping for your new-season boots. As we all know far too well, the best buys always sell out way before the month you actually want to wear them. So now is in fact the perfect time to snap up the chicest styles ahead of the crowd.

There's one thing that stands in the way of me fully indulging my boot-buying habit, though: they're expensive. Especially if you favour leather iterations. Don't get me wrong, a good pair of boots is well worth the investment. Get it right and they could last you for many autumn/winter to come. But not all of us have the budget for super expensive footwear, which is why we're thankful that brands like H&M exist.

H&M regularly impresses me—from its knitwear to the dresses that all our editors have fallen for we've all sung the praises of this high-street hero countless times over the years. With the up and down summer we've had with more cool days upon us, it's clear that boot season is close. And lucky for us, high-street stores haven't held back in offering up their best boots just in time for the the seasonal changes. 

When it comes to our autumn capsule pieces, alongside our trench coats and knitwear are reliable boots that we'll wear from now through to spring. As much as we enjoyed sandal weather and will continue to wear our Birkenstocks around the house (and probably when popping to the shops), the move to autumn days calls for trusty boots, in whatever form you prefer.

Classic flat boots will forever be a wardrobe staple, but other occasions allow for more freedom when it comes to footwear. For evenings, a heeled pair will elevate outfits easily, whilst damper days may require chunky soles. I’m half-Canadian, and I love nothing more than tapping into my roots by way of my outfits. I wear double denim on the regular, and cowboy is my boot of choice. The latter will come in particularly handy this season, as cowboy boots are set to be one of the biggest trends of autumn/winter 2022. Why? Not only were they prevalent on the runways—everyone from Celine to Western-faithful Isabel Marant showcased them in their new collections—but celebrities and fashion people can’t stop wearing them either.

Cowboy boots have long been a part of the cool-girl uniform, with editors and influencers choosing to wear them with everything from dresses to tailoring. Right now, however, I’m inspired by the slew of celebrities who have started wearing them ahead of autumn in the most stylish ways. Take Jodie Comer, for example. At Wilderness festival, the actor paired her cutesy floral minidress with a pair of sleek black leather cowboy boots, turning something that could have easily looked twee into a solid sartorial statement. I don’t consider it a coincidence that Sienna Miller also wore a pair of cowboy boots to a festival earlier this summer. At the same time, FKA Twigs and Emily Ratajkowski have also gone to lengths to prove that cowboy boots belong in the city with their equally impressive get-ups.

On paper, Emily Ratajkowski and I don't exactly have much in common, but as the saying goes, you learn something new every day. Spoiler alert: That's certainly the case today, as I've just discovered that EmRata is just as in love with the Zara boots I've been mulling over as I am. How do I know this? She's already wore them.

I have something of a photographic memory when it comes to celebrity sightings, and upon scrolling Zara's new-in section, when I happened to stumble across the most perfect pair of boots, I had a feeling I had seen them before. Casting my mind back through my mental archives, I landed on an outfit that Emily Ratajkowski wore around this time last year which featured the very same Zara boots. Hers are the 2021 iteration, which feature a slightly glossier finish. Aside from that, her Zara boots are identical to the pair that have just landed on-site. A year later, they look just as current as the first time she stepped out in them, which only attests to their versatility. 

Of course, if EmRata's worn them, that means the reissued pair are likely to sell out just as fast as the OG pair did. I like to be mindful about every purchase I make, and seldom do I feel swayed to buy something that a celebrity has worn on that basis alone, but perhaps this is the sign I need to finally invest in a pair of Western boots, which, in case you didn't know, just so happen to be one of the biggest trends of the year. 

That said, Western boots have enduring appeal, too, and are certainly not a one-off for the new season. You need only look to Isabel Marant, whose Western boots continue to be in-demand year after year—and not just in the winter. Western is one of the only boot styles that fashion people continuously in the summer months, too, making them a year-round staple.
