1. Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Blur Concealer

A new launch from Charlotte Tilbury, and definitely one you need on your radar. The Airbrush Flawless Blur Concealer is like a blurring skin filter, with a lightweight yet high-coverage finish that expertly disguises any traces of dark circles. Hyaluronic acid and squalane make it feel incredibly hydrating, but I will say, a little goes a long way, so if you don't want it to crease, start small and build up from there. Apart from that, I have absolutely no notes.

2. Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer

Next up, the OG of blurring concealers. I've written an entire review on the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Concealer because I love it that much. It has a gorgeously creamy, nourishing texture that works well on both blemishes and under the eyes, and the finish it gives is out of this world. It is full coverage, so I tend to reach for it on slightly heavier makeup days, but what I love is that it never feels heavy on the skin. Instead, it simply creates a smoothing effect thanks to microspherical powders that blur and brighten the complexion.

3. Ilia Beauty Skin Blur Serum Concealer

Ilia Beauty puts skincare at the heart of its formulations, so I was really excited to try this concealer. Similar to the Hourglass concealer, it has a creamy, lightweight texture (packed with peptides, FYI) and doesn't cling to any dry patches of skin. The formula also contains microspheres for that diffused finish we all love, and I was really impressed with how it blurred my dark circles and pores. The coverage is ever so slightly lighter than the option above, so although I might not use it for really angry blemishes, I'll definitely be applying it everywhere else.

4. TirTir Glide & Hide Blurring Concealer

This drugstore concealer feels so innovative. The product itself looks a little like lipstick, with a stick format that you can swipe directly onto the skin. But that's not all, as the clever packaging also houses a liquid concealer in the base of the bullet. The velvety balm glides onto the skin like butter, blurring any signs of skin texture in seconds. I like to apply this near the centre of my face where my pores are most noticeable, before using the liquid concealer on my under-eyes and blemishes. Both formulas feel completely weightless on the skin and do not dry it out at all. Since getting my hands on this product, it's replaced multiple concealers in my makeup bag.

5. Dior Forever Skin Correct Concealer

Whilst this Dior makeup product isn't technically marketed as a blurring concealer, I personally think it's one of the best options out there. It's incredibly lightweight and hydrating, and lasts for hours on the driest parts of my complexion. The creamy formula sinks in like a dream, and while the coverage is definitely on the lighter side, it creates this seamless finish that makes my skin look like my skin, but better, you know? It's expensive for sure, but I can see myself buying this again and again.

6. Merit Beauty The Minimalist

Not quite a foundation, not quite a concealer, this Merit Beauty Complexion Stick technically replaces the need for either. I love using it as a foundation on "no makeup" makeup days, but also use it as concealer with my go-to tinted moisturiser for a tad more coverage. It's buildable, but makes light work of blurring imperfections and creating a second-skin finish. The only downside is that it can cling to dry skin at times, so I always prep my skin with a good serum or primer before using it.

Is it just me, or is it practically impossible to find a good concealer? Those with high coverage look heavy on my skin, while lightweight formulas barely even get to work on my dark circles (trust me, I've tried so many under-eye concealers). Not to mention the fact that every formula seems to crease after a few hours of wear. Even as a beauty editor with access to hundreds of samples, I've still struggled to find the perfect formula. So, when I heard about the new Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Blur Concealer, I didn't even bother trying it, assuming it would be like everything else.

However, a few weeks after it launched, it felt like everyone I knew was going on about how good it was. I turned to one of my friends and said, "Is it really worth the hype?" and she answered with a hard yes. My friends aren't the type to embellish, so I did what any beauty journalist would, and decided to try it out for myself.

I don't want to spoil the whole review, but if I had to describe this product in one word, all I would say is wow. It's like a blurring skin filter in a bottle. But more on that, and everything else I want you to know, below...

The Formula

Right, let's get into it. This is a lightweight, high-coverage, hydrating concealer (yes, really), which the brand claims delivers 24 hours of creaseless wear. While I've not worn it for a straight 24 hours myself, here's what I can confirm. First of all, the coverage is good. So good that you really only need a small amount to do your entire face. Secondly, somehow this concealer also feels incredibly creamy and hydrating. Tilbury refers to it as her "elastic-stretch" formula, and I couldn't think of a better phrase.

It contains hyaluronic acid and squalane, so even my incredibly dry under-eyes lap this stuff up. However, it's been designed with dark circles, blemishes, redness, pores and pigmentation in mind, and much like the Airbrush Flawless Foundation, it delivers a truly blurring effect. Plus, it comes in 34 shades, including a wide range of cool, neutral and warm undertones.

The Application

The wand comes with a unique diamond-shaped applicator that makes it easy to swipe onto the skin. But, as mentioned above, a little of this concealer goes a very long way, so I recommend dotting it onto the skin rather than going for a full-on swipe. Funnily enough, the wand also comes with a "precision Micro-Dot tip", making this quick and easy to do so. I used both a makeup brush and my fingers to blend this out, and found that both worked just as well.

The Verdict

So, what's the verdict? I didn't think I'd say it, but I'm kind of in love with this product. I'm yet to find a concealer that delivers such high coverage while still feeling lightweight and natural on the skin. As someone who gravitates towards "no makeup" makeup looks but also suffers from breakouts and incredibly dark circles, this concealer has bridged the gap between a weightless formula and a blurring finish, which isn't an easy thing to do.

That being said, I do think it's quite easy to go overboard with this. When I first tested it out, I applied way too much and experienced a little bit of caking and creasing throughout the day, but I have since learnt the error of my ways. If you want to get the most out of the formula, I recommend starting with a small amount and going from there. In all honesty, I'm not sure any concealer can be totally creaseproof, but I'd say this comes pretty close.

Growing up with acne-prone skin meant that my makeup bag had to work just as hard as my skincare routine. While I now have my breakouts largely under control, a recent flare-up—the kind where several spots arrive all at once—sent me reaching back into an old familiar habit, green concealer.

When my acne was at its worst, green concealer was my safety net. It meant I didn’t have to pile on thick layers of full-coverage foundation to disguise redness—instead, I could neutralise it from the source via a technique known as colour correcting. As celebrity make-up artist Emma White Turle explains, “Colour correcting is where you use a complementary colour to correct your skin tones. It can neutralise and balance different tones to give you a more even appearance and hide any scars or marks.”

Understanding that principle of cancelling out redness changed everything, and rather than masking my skin, I learned to balance it. Using green to counteract redness meant less product overall, and ultimately, a more natural finish. Revisiting it more recently, I was reminded that while good skincare is the long-term solution, knowing a few clever make-up techniques can be just as empowering.

Why would you use a green concealer?

Green concealer is designed to counteract redness in the skin. Because green sits opposite red on the colour wheel, it neutralises flushed or inflamed areas, making them appear more even before foundation is applied. As White Turle explains, “Green is the most used colour [for colour correcting] and is used to hide redness from spots and irritation. There are differing tones of red and hence differing greens, and so you have to experiment which shade of green works best on the redness you have. A basic guide is that if the red is purple-toned, such as with acne breakouts, then try a darker green. A light or minty green is better on broken capillaries or brighter reds like rosacea.”

In short, green concealer allows you to target redness at its source, meaning you can use less overall coverage and still achieve a balanced, natural-looking finish.

How do you use green concealer?

Application is everything when it comes to colour correction. The goal isn’t to see the green on your skin, it’s to let it subtly neutralise redness underneath your base. “When using a green corrector, or any colour corrector really, start on clean, hydrated skin," says White Turle. "I like to allow skincare to settle for fifteen minutes or so before I start applying makeup. It does depend on the texture of the product you are using, but go lightly, and sometimes a fluffy, small brush is useful for buffing the product over the skin."

Pat or lightly buff a small amount directly onto red areas, then follow with concealer or foundation as usual. "You want a light layer, as you can add more if you need to, but do start gently as you don’t want to be able to see the green; it should blend into the skin and neutralise the redness," she adds.

I used to be the kind of person who would nip into the office bathroom post-lunch to make sure that my makeup was still looking as fresh as it did first thing, and combat any fading patches or smudges with a touch-up or two. These days, however, like most of us, I simply don’t have the time for such self-indulgence. For me, concealer has to be my desert island beauty product. While I love a natural look, there’s no denying that I feel much more confident and polished when I’ve covered over my hormonal breakouts and stubborn dark circles. My tick list, therefore, is rather long. I need a long-lasting concealer that will grip without caking, smooth without settling, and stay put through work days, running after my kids, and late-night deadlines. So I made it my mission to test the best formulas on the market—those which promise serious staying power without sacrificing that real skin finish—to find out which ones can truly deliver.

What to Look For

With so many concealers on the market, I was keen to know exactly what I should be looking for when choosing a long-lasting formulation. Thankfully, celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier was able to steer me in the right direction. “I have quite a variety of concealers in my kit, but when I need longevity, I reach for one with high-quality skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, as this makes such a difference,” explains Grier. “The texture is important too—if it feels greasy, then it’s probably not going to last, and it might make your mascara or eyeliner run too. I’d avoid anything too slippery and look for formulas that take a bit more effort to blend, as that’s a good sign that it has staying power.”

And as for applying your concealer, Grier suggests letting it “marinate” on the skin for a minute before blending. “Start by applying a thin layer and blending it out quickly, then go back in with a couple of dots where you need more coverage and leave it alone for around 60 seconds until the texture thickens,” she explains. “Now blend it out with your fingers or a good blending brush. This technique guarantees better coverage every time and longevity.”

What to Look for in an Illuminating Concealer

When shopping for an illuminating concealer, texture is key. Look for hydrating, creamy concealer formulas that won’t settle into fine lines, especially for the delicate under-eye area. Clarkson recommends pairing “a hydrating eye cream teamed with a brightening concealer” for the most flattering result. Coverage level also matters—sheer to medium works best for illumination, whilst thicker formulas are better reserved for blemishes. Shades with subtle pink or peach undertones can help counteract darkness, while overly shimmery finishes should be avoided if you want a natural glow rather than sparkle.

How to Apply an Illuminating Concealer

For under-eyes, Clarkson prefers using her ring finger, warming the product on the back of the hand first so you don’t over-apply. “The under eye is so delicate and usually an area where you find concealer will sit in fine lines,” she explains. She also advises applying concealer after foundation and any cream products to avoid using too much. For an extra-natural finish, she recommends mixing concealer with a pea-sized amount of moisturiser to sheer it out even further for controlled coverage and a more skin-like glow.

Almost everyone I know in every walk of life has been embracing a more simplistic approach to beauty in recent years. Yet here’s the truth of it for me: while an easier easier makeup routine has been inspired by necessity, I can’t say that I ever feel truly polished when I step out the door with natural skin. You see, as someone who deals consistently with acne breakouts, when my skin is really acting up, I crave the finish that a full foundation once gave me. But there is a solution. Introducing the “foundcealer”.

What Is a Foundcealer?

“Whether you are strapped for time or just want to simplify your routine, finding a concealer that doubles as a base can be a game changer,” explains celebrity makeup artist Tania Grier. Simply put, a foundcealer is effectively a multitasking concealer that can be used for selected coverage exactly where you need it, rather than covering every inch of your face with foundation. For me, that’s on blemishes and dark circles, while for you, it might be areas of redness or hyperpigmentation.

How To Use a Foundcealer

As someone who has very little skill in the makeup application department, I was slightly concerned that a foundcealer may require too much precision for me. However, they are delightfully easy to use. “In most cases, you’ll want to just apply a little to the under eye area, plus a dot on the cheeks, chin and forehead,” explains Grier. “You can then spread it out quickly using your fingers or a soft concealer brush.” If you do have areas like spots or rosacea then Grier suggests taking a moment to “spot check” the skin. “Just apply a small amount to blemishes, redness or pigmentation to create the same effect as a foundation would, but with a quicker turnaround as you’re using less product.”

What to Look for In a Foundcealer

The most important thing when choosing a foundcealer is getting the right shade, as you’ll need a tone that works on various areas of the skin and many of us naturally have fluctuations in tone and colour on our face. “Test the colour by applying it to the under eyes to see how it fares on dark circles before blending it out into the cheeks,” advises Grier. “It should complement the skin like a sheer foundation would.”

Next, it’s the texture to consider. “It needs to blend well and not feel dry,” says Grier. It’s also important to note that if you are used to wearing a more classic medium to full base then you will want to seek out a foundcealer with a little more pigment to make sure that you get that coverage. “Especially if you have rosacea, acne or sun damage, you’ll want something that genuinely conceals,” explains Grier.

How To Choose a Creamy Concealer

Firstly, before choosing a creamy concealer, you may be wondering if the formula is suited to your skin type. “They’re a dream for anyone with normal to dry skin or if you just like a dewy, skin-like finish,” says Daisy.

As an oily-skinned woman myself, I can say from experience that creamy concealers are a great choice for all skin types, simply set with powder after applying to lock them in place. “I also love creamy concealers for mature skin, because they don’t grab onto texture,” Daisy continues, meaning they won’t settle into fine lines and wrinkles.

“[When it comes to choosing a creamy concealer] I'd always say check for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, because they keep the skin looking smooth,” says Daisy, “[Also] anything with a touch of radiance, like light-reflecting pigments, is a bonus for brightening.”

How To Apply a Creamy Concealer

As I mentioned, how you apply a creamy concealer can make all the difference in how it looks and wears. The key I’ve found is to build up light layers, rather than apply it too heavily and allow it to sink into the skin before following with the next layer.

“Less is more with a creamy formula,” Daisy explains when I ask her about her technique. “Dab it on where you need it most, like under the eyes, around the nose or on any redness. I like to tap it in with a fingertip or brush so it melts in seamlessly.”

If there is one thing you should know about me, it is that my adoration for a great concealer knows no bounds. Eldridge's pinpoint concealer technique was born in the early nineties, when much like today, a barely-there makeup look was very much the desired aesthetic. As a makeup artist to some of the world's biggest models, Eldridge became famed for a specific micro-concealing technique. While she herself was dealing with acne, in an attempt to conceal her breakouts and maintain a natural-looking, foundation-free complexion, she began honing her targeted concealing skill—now known as pinpoint concealing.

"My personal complexion philosophy involves resisting the urge to apply a thick layer of blanket coverage to the skin, even if there are large blemishes or areas you want to cover. Pinpoint Concealing is all about precisely concealing only the areas you feel are absolutely necessary to camouflage, moving focus to the skin in between your problem areas—this allows the beauty of your natural skin to shine through," says Eldridge.

The Pinpoint Concealer Technique

Pinpoint concealing involves applying a high-coverage concealer in a very targeted way—dabbing it only onto the small areas you wish to conceal. For a long time, Eldridge has sung the praises of Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer for being the best product for the job. She would use a very small-nibbed concealer brush, dot it over the blemish and pat in with her finger.

But now Eldridge has announced a simpler solution—a precise pencil concealer that she has created herself, specifically for this technique.

Instead of having to keep a cream concealer and small brush to hand, the new Lisa Eldridge Pinpoint Concealer Micro Correcting Pencil aims to make concealing small areas much easier. Here's how it is done:

• Prep skin with moisturiser, primer, skin tint and/or foundation.
• Using a brush or a fine-nibbed concealer stylo that matches your skin tone exactly, lightly scribble over the area you wish to micro-conceal.
• Dab your (clean) finger over the area to gently blend.
• Continue layering in this way until your desired coverage is achieved.

The trick to making this product work for you is in finding a shade that sits very closely to your natural skin tone (there are 16 to choose from, so this should be easy enough) and "scribbling" the pencil on, rather than drawing. "Don’t apply the concealer in a completely round circle over the area, make the edges non-uniform instead, as it will help with blending and will make it less visible to the eye," Eldridge advises.

So, considering I have been a pretty hardcore follower of this technique for many years, I wanted to give the new product a go to see just how foolproof it really is (and, most importantly, see how it compares to my current technique)...

A Beauty Editor's Review of the Pinpoint Concealer Technique

As a dedicated online follower of Eldridge for many years, her pinpoint concealer technique has been my exclusive approach to daily concealer application for most of my adult life. However, I must admit I haven't been quite as forensic with my technique—I'm a lazy girl who can't be bothered to faff around with makeup brushes. Instead, I have typically relied on concealer pens and stylos for a more precise application.

And for a very long time, this has worked for me. Despite the fact my chin is in a constant acneic state and breakout scars are dotted all over my cheeks, by using pinpoint concealing and adopting a natural-complexion look, I've managed to convince everyone who knows me that I have good skin. The reality is that, actually, my skin is really not that good at all, but by not wearing foundation and concealing only my main areas of concern (dark circles, spots and scars), my friends and colleagues seem to think my skin is always bare.

My current favourite concealer of choice for such micro-concealing endeavours is Sisley's Stylo Correct Concealer. I like that the creamy formula can just be dabbed or swiped over spots, areas of pigmentation and dark circles and then smudged out and blended with my fingers.

On initial inspection of the Lisa Eldridge Pinpoint Concealer Micro Correcting Pencil, things seemed promising. I like that the nib is fine enough to be super-precise, I like that it has a twist-up mechanism because I can't be bothered with sharpening and the formula itself seemed creamy enough when I swatched it—I was impressed. But how did the application fare?

Step 1: Moisturiser and/or Skin Tint

Truthfully, I hardly ever apply a base. My daily makeup routine involves applying a moisturising facial sunscreen and scribbling on my concealer stylo over the top—letting it melt into the moisturising base my SPF has provided. However, given that my skin is particularly dry at the moment and the Lisa Eldridge Pinpoint Concealer Micro Correcting Pencil is a little less creamy than my usual go-to, I opted to apply a sheer skin tint first.

I'll admit here that I did try to go in with the pencil on a bare face, but my post-breakout marks were just too dry, and I found the concealing pencil just wasn't blending in the way I wanted it to. So, I used my go-to Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint for a super-hydrating base that delivers a very light coverage. An all-over base is not my everyday product of choice, but I went with it for the sake of this review.

I would like to point out here that just because I felt as though I needed to apply a base first doesn't necessarily mean everyone will have to. If your areas of concern are broken veins or areas of hyperpigmentation and you don't have dry patches, you'll probably be fine without.

Step 2: Pinpoint Conceal

Once my base was on and my skin felt suitably hydrated, it was time to give the Pinpoint Concealer Micro Correcting Pencil a go. I have a lot of experience in the pinpoint concealer application technique, so it didn't take a lot of getting used to. I identified the key areas of concern and, in turn, lightly scribbled over them before dabbing with my finger to blend.

Most of my marks and spots were concealed on first go, however, some more stubborn areas of pigmentation needed two or three layers before I was happy with how disguised they were. That being said, I was really impressed with how effective the formula is at concealing. I was watching my spots and post-breakout marks disappear before my very eyes all in the space of a few seconds.

One thing I will say, however, is that due to its design and nature, this is not a product that will fare well under the eyes. My dark circles are big, bold and quite intrusive. If I were to use it under my eyes, too, I'd probably get through the entire pencil in a matter of days. Plus, the full-coverage formula is simply not designed to be used in this way.

Step 3: The Rest of the Face

The first thing I felt like I had to do to finish off my look was swipe some creamy concealer on my under-eye area. I went for my trusty By Terry Hyaluronic Serum Concealer for a light-medium coverage, in keeping with the natural-looking finish of the pinpoint concealer.

Because I had applied a skin tint, I also felt as though my face needed some dimension adding back into it, so I opted for my usual Merit Flush Balm, a swipe through of a Refy brow gel, a coating of L'Oréal Paris Paradise Big Deal Mascara and a slick of Chanel Rouge Coco Baume on my lips.

The result? A genuinely natural-looking makeup look that took approximately four minutes to apply.

My Final Verdict

Overall, I'm really impressed with this new product. As somebody who has been using the Lisa Eldridge pinpoint concealer technique for a very long time, it is needless to say I was already sold on the application method—it really is the secret to a natural- and healthy-looking complexion.

As for how the Lisa Eldridge Pinpoint Concealer Micro Correcting Pencil fares in comparison to my usual product choices and routine, I would say that it is far more effective at covering my surface-level dark spots and patches of broken veins. My chin looks much more even in tone for using it. However, on my more recent spots and breakouts, I would say that the fuller-coverage formula does cling to dry areas more than my creamier products do. Going forward, I'd be sure to apply heaps more moisturiser to my face first.

Ideally, I like a concealer that I can apply on both blemishes and dark circles—and this isn't that. You see, I'm a really, really lazy makeup applier, and I'm always looking for get-outs where I can find them. Because of this, I just know that most days I'll inevitably end up dabbing my under-eye concealer over my blemishes, too.

So now the million-pound question: would I recommend? The short answer is yes—pinpoint concealing has totally changed my makeup routine, and I think everyone can benefit from it if you're after a natural-looking base. As for my recommendation of the new Lisa Eldridge concealer, I would absolutely recommend giving it a go if you are looking to conceal small areas of hyperpigmentation and legacy spots—it genuinely eradicates their appearance in a matter of seconds in a way that I have never seen before. But, if like me, you have active acne and are a far cry from a makeup artist, you might prefer a creamier concealer that covers more ground. All in all? I'd say it's a pretty revolutionary addition to the makeup scene.

I have a love-hate relationship with concealer. Yes, I love the fact that I can use it to cover up any blemishes or dark circles when I'm feeling a little self-conscious, but almost every concealer I've tried (even the best under-eye concealers) settles into fine lines, clings to dry skin and creases within a matter of hours. Years of working in the beauty industry have meant that I've found a handful of products that truly work for me, so whenever anyone recommends a new concealer, I'm always a little bit skeptical.

That being said, there's one concealer that I have heard multiple beauty editors rave about for years now, and I am yet to put it to the test. This iconic product launched in 2020 and took social media by storm, and I'd even go as far as to say that it's become somewhat of a makeup bag staple. With my dark circles looking as tired as ever, I decided to reach out to my friends at Hourglass and ask them if I could put the concealer through its paces. Soon enough, a range of shades arrived at my door and I've been putting the product to the test for the last few weeks. The Formula

Let's kick things off with one of the most important aspects, which is the formula. I have combination skin, but lately it's been incredibly dry. In fact, my under-eyes have been so dry and flaky that I've been avoiding applying concealer altogether (although the best concealers for dry skin would probably do the trick). So, as you can imagine, I was hoping for a hydrating formula that wouldn't make this problem worse. Luckily for me, this concealer is pretty much weightless on the skin. It has a super creamy, nourishing formula that blends like a dream and doesn't feel cakey or heavy. It is a full coverage concealer, but the concentrated formula means that you only need one or two dots of the concealer for each under-eye. When it comes to blemishes, one dot of this should do the trick.

What makes this concealer really clever is that it contains microspherical powders that work to blur and brighten the skin while also adding a smoothing effect. Plus, it's crease-resistant, long-wearing and waterproof. I haven't tested the waterproof part myself, but I fully intend to put the product through its paces this summer.

The Packaging

I wouldn't normally comment on a concealer's packaging that much, but this particular wand deserves a special mention. Yep, Hourglass have designed a super flexible applicator that allows the wand to hug the contours of your face for a more precise finish. Pretty cool, right?

The Shades

Now, onto the shades. There are currently 32 shades on offer, and while there are options to suit different skin tones and undertones, it would be nice to see a wider variety from the brand in the future. I wasn't quite sure what shade I would be, so I used the foundation shade match quiz on the brand's website to help make things a bit easier.

I managed to narrow it down to two shades, and in the end I used a mix of Creme, a fair shade for cool undertones, and Cotton, a fair shade for warm undertones.

So, how did I get on with this concealer? As mentioned above, I have been avoiding applying concealer altogether as my under eyes have been so dry from the cold weather, but amazingly, this product didn't cling to any dry patches of skin. Instead, it blended into my complexion seamlessly and felt super creamy and comfortable to wear. Did it completely get rid of my dark circles? No, but I'm pretty sure no product can. However, what it did do was brighten my under eyes and cover up the discolouration around that area. I felt so much more confident after applying this concealer, and combined with my favourite foundation, my makeup looked more airbrushed as a whole.

One thing I was keen to test was how this concealer lasted throughout the day. My concealer always creases under my eyes, so I didn't have high hopes. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It didn't crease at all during my 8-hour day in the office, and after getting the tube home, there were only a few creases to be seen. While I wouldn't say that it's fully crease-resistant, it definitely has impressive lasting powers.

While I only have positive things to say, it's important to note that this isn't the most affordable concealer. At £36, it's not the kind of product that you pick up in Boots on a whim. However, thanks to the super concentrated formula, one tube of this will last you for such a long time that it's a worthwhile investment in my opinion.

Until now, foundation has always been a staple in my makeup bag. Growing up with acne meant that my relationship with makeup was initially centred around a need for coverage and concealment—so foundation was a true staple. I used to spend (what felt like) hours layering my foundation over colour-correcting primers and concealers. Oh, and I never worn anything less than a full coverage foundation. Of course, this approach certainly worked in helping to hide my breakouts and tone down redness, but I wore it solely for practicality, not because I particularly wanted to or enjoyed doing so.

Over the years, my relationship with foundation has taken a complete 180—mostly as I've become more confident and comfortable with embracing my natural skin. I still experience breakouts and am dealing with years worth of scarring, but I no longer feel the need to hide it away beneath layers of thick, heavy makeup.

Instead, I've turned to the likes of skin tints, concealers, BB creams, tinted moisturisers, and bronzing drops. Products that offer a light and (if needed) buildable coverage, without caking my skin, clogging pores, or looking mask-like. 1. Concealer

Back in the day, I used concealer to cover each individual breakout, and I layered it on both under and on top of my foundation. Now, I've learned to use concealer in a whole new way—as an alternative, rather than an accessory to, foundation.

For days when I don't want a full coverage base but maybe still need a little stealth concealing, a concealer does just the trick. I apply it to the areas where it's most needed, and then blend and buff it out, so it appears totally undetectable.

2. Tinted Moisturiser

Those with dry skin types may notice that foundation clings to and emphasis areas of dryness—which is where a tinted moisturiser comes in handy. They provide enough pigment to subtly even out skin tone and cancel out redness, but are formulated to hydrate and nourish the skin at the same time. The result? Skin looks (and feels) glowy and hydrated.

3. BB Cream

A K-beauty staple, BB creams offer a lighter and more natural-looking finish to foundations, while also helping to conceal breakouts and deliver skincare benefits—after all, BB stands for 'blemish balm'. Ideal for low maintenance people and those who don't want to look or feel like they've got makeup on, BB creams can be applied with your fingers or a sponge.

4. Skin Tint

Skin tints are usually thinner and more serum-like in texture than tinted moisturiser and BB creams. They're great for those who want a truly weightless finish, but are also surprisingly pigmented, so will go a long way towards concealing and covering everything from breakouts and sun spots to redness and hyperpigmentation.

5. Bronzing Drops

If you truly want to avoid wearing makeup altogether, consider trying out bronzing drops—which were my go-to all through the summer. These ultra-pigmented drops can be applied directly to your skin or can be mixed into your moisturiser, so can you can basically create your own bespoke tinted moisturiser. They're a great option if you want to really tailor the amount of coverage of your base.

Okay, so you've got acne-prone skin? Naturally, the first step in addressing breakouts is to establish an acne-friendly skincare routine—removing products containing pore-clogging ingredients, and replacing them with lightweight moisturisers, hardworking cleansers, and serums powered by ingredients like salicylic acid and niacinamide.

It can take up to three months for skincare to have an effect (especially when dealing with a stubborn concern like acne), but if you're still getting breakouts, it's important to keep in mind that there are a whole host of other factors that can affect our skin and contribute to acne.

From hormones and stress through to diet, lifestyle and hygiene habits, and of course, the other products that we apply to our skin, clearing acne can often take a full 360 approach. As an esthetician and someone who has lived with acne for the past 16 years, I know first-hand the impact that makeup can have upon skin—and how to deal with it.

Depending on their formulas, makeup products can contribute to breakouts, especially if they contain ingredients that might clog pores or cause irritation to acne-prone skin. Hygienic application techniques, like avoiding using your fingers and using clean brushes and sponges can make a massive difference. As will thorough makeup removal—I always recommend using a makeup remover first and then double cleansing skin with a flannel. No face wipes, and no sleeping in makeup are my golden rules.

To be even more on the safe side, it's a good idea to buy acne-friendly makeup products in the first place. These days, everything from primers and foundations to concealers and powders can be formulated to be non-comedogenic (not pore-clogging) and can even include active ingredients to help treat breakouts throughout the day.

The formula is versatile enough to conceal dark circles as well as highlight for a sculpting effect that actually lasts throughout the day with minimal creasing. It also received high praise from our deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. These serum drops can be worn on bare skin, mixed into moisturiser or foundation or applied over makeup as a bronzer to warm up the skin. You can even mix them with your body moisturiser for an instant glow on limbs or your décolletage. They're virtually foolproof thanks to the sheer formula, which adds a subtle glow that can be built up for a deeper payoff.

"I love this product, and it’s affordable, which makes it even better," says senior fashion and beauty editor for branded content, Rebecca Rhys-Evans. "I’m a serial fake tanner, and when I’ve used expensive gradual tanning drops before, I’ve often woken up to orange patches which you aren't easily removed. This product eliminates that issue. From the pocket-sized packaging that's easy to throw in your bag to the satin formulas that glide onto the skin and melt in effortlessly, there was nothing our judges didn't love about these effortlessly easy-to-use formulas. They're also versatile enough to be patted onto cheeks without the need for a brush as well as tapped into the lips for a monochromatic makeup look.

"I love the satin texture of these blushes, and the colours are great too," says makeup artist Anna Payne. "The stick formula is perfect for throwing in your bag for on-the-go touch-ups."

For the cream blush fans on the Who What Wear UK team, Rhode's Pocket Blush scored top marks across the board. "I really loved testing these blushers," says beauty editor Eleanor Vousden. "The formula is creamy and results in a satin finish on the skin which isn’t overly dewy nor matte—it's perfect. The blush lasted really well throughout the day, and I love the stick formula which is easy to pat into cheeks and lips on the go," she says. "The packaging is also very cute and travel-friendly. You only need a tiny amount, so this will last for ages and makes the price very reasonable, in my opinion."

We had to add a highly commended award for Ateh Jewel's Blush Of Dreams, which has been designed to work across all skin tones. The brand champions inclusivity, and our judges loved these creamy blushes which come in beautiful shades and not only pack a pigment punch but stay put throughout the day, looking just as vibrant hours later.

"I love this blusher," says makeup artist Emily Wood. "It creates the sweetest flush and is really blendable and hydrating. A little goes a long way, and although it's cream-based, the flush stays on," she says.

As for Saie's products, our judges couldn't get enough of the Glowy Super Gel.

"This is stunning on its own for a lit-from-within glow or on top of makeup as a highlighter for a refreshed look," says skincare expert Janet Adetunji. "The shade Roseglow is so beautiful and iridescent," she says.

"Roseglow has a subtle pinky tint. I used it both over my SPF and on top of my makeup where I would usually apply highlighter. It does give a nice radiance and I appreciate that it’s non-greasy and blends well," says Seago.

Huda's Easy Bake Loose Baking & Setting Powder was one of our most highly-scored products, earning a permanent spot in our testing panel's makeup bags. Coming in a range of shades designed to blur, set and brighten all skin tones, the finely milled powder matttifies the skin with a subtly luminous finish so that your makeup never looks flat. It also won over Who What Wear UK's endorsement sales director Efi Mandrides. "This is a nice, finely milled powder so you can bake without it being too heavy. It worked well with a damp sponge since it was so fine, but it is equally easy to achieve a matte finish with a brush— I would definitely use this powder again and recommend it," she says.

If you can't live without lashes, you need to try Bonded's No Glue Lashes, which were a hit with our judging panel, scoring ten out of ten across the board. Offering up to five days of wear, these individual lash clusters use bonding technology rather than glue, which is far gentler on your natural lashes. They come in a range of lengths and styles to suit every eye shape and preference, from a natural flutter to volumised lashes. Our judges noted how well these lashes lasted, as well as how quick and easy they were to apply.

"I would recommend these as I am yet to find a lash glue that I love and I don't really like the faff of glueing lashes. These are quick and easy and the style I received was flattering," says makeup artist Michelle Leandra. "They are very sticky which means they can be fiddly at first, but following the instructions really helps, and this obviously helps with the longevity," she says.

"Easy to apply, long-lasting, natural-looking, not too heavy— I love them," says Mandrides. "The lasting power is amazing, and these are great for older eyes too. I used them on a bride who cried happy tears and they didn't budge," she says.

This was a tough category to judge. With so many lipsticks, balms, glosses and oils launching this year, it took a standout formula to win this award. Summer Fridays impressed our judges so much with its Dream Lip Oil that several of us immediately went out and bought additional shades. The silky oil formula not only feels luxurious on the lips (that will be the nine types of plant oils in this nourishing formula), but it actually lasts for many hours in comparison to other lip oils that seem to disappear into thin air. Our judges also loved the chic packaging and flattering shades that work across skin tones. This quite possibly could be the best lip oil ever created.

It totally won over our deputy editor, Maxine Eggenberger. "I'm a big fan of lip products, and over the past year, I’ve tried lots of oils in search of the perfect one. This is it," she says. "Summer Fridays has managed to create an oil that’s nourishing (the vitamin E made quick work of my typically dry, chapped lips with just a couple of wears), glossy, non-sticky, has a great colour payoff and lasts.

If brows frame the face, then Blink Brow Bar's Ultimate Brow Arch Definer is the master architect behind naturally sculpted arches. Featuring an angled nib, it effortlessly fills in sparse areas, adding natural definition that is easy to diffuse thanks to the innovative tiny oval kabuki brush on the other end, leaving a soft finish. Our judges also rated the shade range, which spans from light blonde to a deep brown-black.

"I loved the brush and the angled brow pencil, and the range of shades is perfect for everyone," says Hammer.

"I really like the oval kabuki brush on the Blink Brow Bar Ultimate Brow Arch Definer; it tamed my rather unruly eyebrows," says video editor Emily Shannon. "I have quite defined eyebrows, so I only needed a light application of the pencil, but I found it easy to use, even for someone inexperienced with brow products. I would recommend this if you want fuller, more defined-looking eyebrows, as well as a tidy tool," she says.

It's no secret that there are hundreds of mascaras to choose from. But, out of every single one we tested, L'Oréal Paris' Volume Million Lashes Panorama Mascara came out on top amongst our judges, who loved the flexible comb brush that captures every single lash for a fanned-out effect. It delivers a great amount of volume, curl and length without flaking, drooping or smudging throughout the day. All that for £13? Consider us sold.

"This is a great affordable mascara for all lashes. It’s super volumising and lengthening, creating a fanned-out, false-lash effect that lasts all day," says Taylor.

"I’ll admit it: I’m a mascara snob, so it’s been a long time since I used a cheaper lash product. However, the formula and brush are up there with the luxury counterparts I've tried," says Eggenberger. "One of the selling points of this mascara is the multi-level bristle brush technology, which is supposed to catch every lash from corner to corner and coat them all evenly. It does just that!

"The length of my lashes was noticeably much longer than usual, with a subtle curl that made for a natural-looking finish," she says. "The brush distributes the perfect amount of product every time; a thin layer which you could absolutely build for more drama. For me, one coat was enough to give me the my-lashes-but-(much, much)better look I’ve been after for years. Unlike other mascaras I’ve tried, my lashes didn’t drop after a few hours of wear, and crumbling and smudging just wasn’t a thing," she adds.

Isle of Paradise's Sunny Serum certainly made our days brighter, with its instant bronzing serum formula that lent our judges' complexions a healthy-looking glow. We love that this lightweight serum is packed with skincare ingredients like niacinamide, squalane and jojoba oil, which nourish the skin whilst delivering an instant glow.

"Love, love, love," says Seago. "I mix half a pump of this with my SPF on no-makeup days and my skin looks so good. It’s non-streaky, rubs in really well with fingers, doesn’t pill and really just lights up your face," she says. "It looks quite alarming when you pump it out because the gel is pretty dark, but you can customise the intensity of the colour depending on how much you use and whether you mix it with another product or use it solo. Oh, and there’s no shimmer—just dewy, glowy goodness."

With an extensive 51 shades, we applaud Haus Labs for its excellent range of foundation colours, which also caters to warm, cool and neutral undertones whilst spanning an impressive breadth of shades, from deep to fair. "The formula is wonderful. You don’t need too much, it has good, buildable coverage and is long-wearing without looking or feeling heavy," says Hammer.

The Formula

First things first, we have to talk about the formula. What's really interesting about this concealer is that it is formulated with TFC8® by Augustinus Bader, a patented technology that is composed of peptides, vitamins and natural amino acids found in the skin to help nourish and protect your complexion. So, not only is this concealer improving the look of your makeup, but it's also working to improve your natural skin.

The concealer itself has been designed to give second-skin, light-to-medium coverage with a radiant finish. It has a super blendable formula and comes in a handy pen format with a tapered brush so you can simply click and apply no matter where you are.

The Shades

The concealer comes in 16 shades, with a range of options for different skin tones and undertones (the website says that the concealer is compatible for warm, neutral and rosy undertones). I do think that there could be more options on offer (concealers from the likes of MAC have around 40 shades to choose from), but hopefully this is something that we will see from the brand in the future.

The Packaging

Now, I couldn't do this review and not talk about the packaging. In true VB style, this concealer is very chic. The slim, black pen is perfect for popping in your handbag and I love that it features a pop of the signature Augustinus Bader blue on the lid.

The Verdict

I have to admit, I don't usually get on with concealers under my eyes. The skin around my eyes is quite dry so I find that concealer really settles into these dry patches and makes the area look even worse. However, thanks to the added skincare benefits, this concealer blends like a dream and looks seamless once applied.

I get quite bad discolouration under my eyes and this product has just the right amount of coverage to help diminish my dark circles while still letting my skin breathe. If you want super high coverage then it probably isn't for you, but if you like a more natural makeup look then I couldn't recommend it enough. One thing I really love is the radiant finish. My under eyes have such a lovely glow to them when I wear this which helps to make me look a lot less tired than I actually am.

Now, it's worth noting that a little of this goes a long way. I definitely applied too much at first and noticed it creasing slightly because there was too much product, so I would recommend building coverage up slowly depending on what sort of finish you want. Luckily, thanks to the pen format this is super easy to do.

The only big downside to this concealer is the cost. At £64, it definitely doesn't come cheap. You can certainly find more affordable concealers on the market that will give you a radiant finish, however thanks to the added skincare benefits, I could see myself investing in this concealer again and again. Plus, you only need a small amount so one of these pens is bound to last you quite a while.

For most of my twenties, I've managed to dodge dark circles—up until now. It was almost like they crept up overnight and appeared one morning. Now (at least to me) they look more prominent than they have ever been. As we know, there are multiple causes for dark circles, ranging from genetics to lifestyle factors, but all in all, there is nothing that can really 'get rid' of dark circles (any eye cream that promises to completely make them disappear is just clever marketing, and ultimately your money down the drain). With that in mind, I've chosen to accept them for what they are and go for the next best bet: diguise them with an arsenal of really good under eye concealers.

In my time as a beauty editor, countless under eye concealers have passed my desk and it takes a really good one to stand out. On an evening scroll on TikTok. I saw glowing reviews for Erborian's new Super BB Concealer. My interest was piqued and I decided to give it a try for myself. Having long been a fan of Erborian's BB Cream, I had high hopes for the concealer. Scroll ahead for my honest thoughts and before and afters.

Before Using Erborian Super BB Concealer

Here is my skin with makeup and without any concealer around my eyes. My under eye darkness is almost blue in colour and appears more towards the inner corners of my eyes, which is where I find I need a helping hand to brighten.

Applying Erborian Super BB Concealer

The serum-concealer hybrid comes in a tube with a flexible doe-foot applicator. I tried the shade Nude, the second lightest shade Erborian offers. On first trying it, I was surprised at just how much coverage it provided, even in a silky serum consistency. I applied a couple of dots around the inner part of my under eyes to start.

Blending Erborian Super BB Concealer

To blend, I used a densely bristled concealer brush to diffuse the product, but it also blends easily when patted in with fingertips. I was amazed at how it instantly brightened and concealed my under eye darkness with a medium yet buildable coverage. Amazingly, even with its impressive coverage it felt and looked lightweight, sinking into the skin without cakeing.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Here is a side by side of the concealer on the left and without concealer on the right. The left looks more radiant and brighter, and I like that the concealer dries done into a hydrating, radiant finish that is neither too dewy that it slips and slides throughout the day, nor too matte that it's drying. It's just right. I also tried it on blemishes and it easy disguised redness.

Is Erborian Super BB Concealer Worth It?

Is the Erborian Super BB Concealer worth it? In my opinion, yes. I love the radiant and brightening finish that helps to disguise my dark under eyes. The fact that it's also infused with skincare ingredients niacinamide, ginseng and SPF 25 also means that it helps to treat dark circles and blemishes as it conceals too. However, I do wish that the shade range was more extensive, particularly for darker skin tones. Although the concealer has a lightweight serum consistency, the coverage is great, which means that it might not stretch across skin tones as much as you'd might expect from a serum-concealer. A little goes a long way, so the £35 tube will last well, even if you're using it every day.

Take it from someone who had to learn the hard way: The right set of brushes can totally change how your makeup looks for the better. I'm not sure what I was doing before I invested in a good set of foundation and concealer brushes, but I will say that since I've been using them, my makeup looks smoother, more natural, and takes far less time to apply. I know that sounds like a train you want to hop on, so you're going to want to pay attention.

How to Apply Under-Eye Concealer With a Brush

Concealer, in particular, can be tricky to apply without going overboard, right? Using a good brush can change all that—especially if you're applying it in the under-eye area. Makeup artists have a few tips for us in this regard. If you're wondering what on earth I'm talking about, it's time to familiarise yourself with the world of custom cosmetics. Remember the days when you'd pop into Boots and spend hours at the makeup stands testing concealers on the back of your hand? Well, it seems that those days are over, as thanks to AI, we can have a totally custom concealer shade delivered to our door without even having to leave the house. Which brand is behind this futuristic way of makeup shopping? Say hello to Dcypher.

This clever company set out to provide each and every customer with personalised makeup formulations so that you never have to worry about finding the right match for your skin tone again. It's not just concealer either; the brand offers a custom foundation and a skin tint depending on what sort of finish you like. However, as someone who always struggles to find the correct concealer shade, this product captured my attention the most.

As amazing as custom makeup sounds, when I first came across Dcypher and its concept, I was somewhat sceptical about how accurate the process would be. So, like any good journalist, I decided to put the concealer to the test. I even managed to convince some of my colleagues to give it a go, so keep scrolling to see how we got on.

How Dcypher Concealer Works

First things first, let me talk you through the whole process, including how this concealer is actually created. When visiting the website, you'll see that there are two concealers to choose from. One is described as a perfect skin tone match which can be used for covering blemishes or scarring, and the other is a brightening formula designed to be used under the eyes. Once you've selected your desired concealer type, the website will use your phone or laptop camera to scan your face and will then give you a unique code which is your personalised shade. Your concealer will arrive with a slip of paper that contains product information such as your skin tone and your undertone.

The concealer itself is priced at £32, so you're definitely paying for the personalised service. That being said, some luxury concealers will set you back almost double this price, and there's no guarantee that they'll be the right shade for you, especially if you've ordered online. In my opinion, paying £30 for a totally custom concealer shade is worth it if it means creating the perfect makeup base—that is if it delivers results.

1. Eleanor Vousden, Beauty Editor

"Like Grace, I was sceptical about how well a concealer could be colour-matched online. But I was really impressed with how easy and effective the whole process was. In about 10 seconds, it took three very quick pictures and I had checked out within five minutes—speedy! I opted to go a shade lighter to brighten my under-eyes. Upon trying it, I was very impressed with the colour match. It is slightly lighter than my skin tone, making it ideal for brightening the under-eye area. The colour was bang-on, adding a subtle luminous effect. The formula itself is very silky and blends like a dream. I'd say that this is a full-coverage concealer, so you don't need a lot of product to conceal dark circles and the like. I also love the flexible doe-foot applicator which makes dotting the concealer under the eyes really easy. I'll be recommending this to everyone."

I’m not into thick-coverage foundations or concealers and I found this lightweight enough to be a daily go-to whilst still making a difference. I now prefer using this under my eyes to brighten and 'de-bag', as I feel I need something a little dryer and less glowy to cover up pigmentation and breakouts. It goes on smoothly and is velvety to the touch; it doesn’t dry in creases or ever look caked on, and a little goes a long way. I’d probably reapply if I were doing something in the evening, but I think that’s fairly standard for a concealer that isn’t super dense and high coverage."

"Let me start by saying that I am very, very fussy when it comes to concealer—I've already found my perfect lightweight formula and I’ve remained loyal to it for years. So, when I was asked to try the Dcypher experience, I was interested to see if it could sway me. Let’s talk about the process—Dcypher uses AI tech through your camera lens to determine your shade which is then created bespoke in a variety of base products. The whole experience was as easy as taking a selfie because that’s literally all it was. Head to the website, whack in your details, take a few photos and off your data goes to the lab for blending and sending. I was impressed by how seamless the whole thing was, but the sceptic in me still had reservations—would the product that came through my letterbox two days later actually resemble what my skin looks like? Spoiler alert: Yes. 

"The colour-matching was spot on. I held it up to my usual concealer and it was like for like (and, let me tell you, it took me a long time to find my perfect shade in my original favourite). However, this concealer was too full-coverage for my liking. It’s not overly matte, but it's more so than the concealer I use day-to-day, and it felt heavier on my skin than I’d like. That being said, it does blend well (a perfect colour match will do that), a small amount covers decent ground and it holds up for a very long time—by the end of the day my under-eyes still looked brighter, which is a revelation in itself. I’m in my mid-thirties and I’m starting to get small lines around my eyes which I felt were amplified by this formula, but let me stress, this is in contrast to the very lightweight product I currently use. If you prefer fuller coverage and a thicker texture and want to order confident in the knowledge that a product has been literally tailored to your skin tone, Dcypher is well worth a go."

"I currently own one concealer in my makeup arsenal—not because I don’t want to try new ones, but because I’m overwhelmed by the amount of shades there are on the market and the fear of losing money if I choose the wrong one. That said, I jumped at the chance to try out Dycpher's AI-powered technology to find my perfect shade match. The process was simple to follow, and it only took two minutes to take a photo with my phone in natural light. I was surprised at how accurate the matching was, and my package came with a card that showed my bespoke shade as well as my undertones. Compared to my regular concealer, this one offered me medium coverage and I was a huge fan of both the doe-foot applicator as well as the consistency of the formula.

"I was amazed at how smooth this process was, from taking the picture to the product arriving a couple of days later. I tried the brightening and the skin-tone match concealers, which were both the correct shade for me, even though they were a darker tone than I usually go for. The latter offers quite heavy coverage, but that works for me as I have acne scarring which I find hard to cover with other concealers, as well as dark under-eyes, and both concealers lasted all day. The only thing I'd change about the products is that it's hard to distinguish between the two tubes, but other than that, I am a full Dcypher convert!"

"Even as a beauty editor, I find it really hard to match my foundation and concealer, which is why I was so excited to give Dcypher's custom formula a go. Luckily for me, I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how quick and easy the whole process was, and after testing the product, it's safe to say that I've never had a concealer match my skin tone as well as this formula does. The product itself glides onto the skin, and I found it so easy to blend. As someone who touches their face a lot and finds that most of their makeup has rubbed off by the end of the day, I was delighted to see that my concealer was still in place after a long day at work and travelling back and forth on busy tubes. It's definitely a little heavier than other concealers I've tried, but this meant that I only needed to use a small amount, making the £32 investment well worth the money, in my opinion."

Whilst dark circles can be hereditary—in which case there isn't a huge amount that you can do to shift them with skincare`—there is one key culprit causing mine to stay stubbornly put right now: lack of sleep. (Louder, for the toddlers at the back!). Yes, pre-kids, I was a master at napping in even the smallest window of free time and I rarely woke once my head hit the pillow. My under-eyes were as bright as the summer sun and dark circles weren't a phrase in my beauty vocabulary. These days? The shadows are intense.

However, a new launch from Beauty Pie landed on my desk this week that managed to transform my grey, tired under-eyes and make them bright and glowy once more. It's an extension of the brand's best-selling Superluminous Under-Eye Genius (£12)—a brightener and colour corrector for dark circles which I'm also a huge fan of. And trust me, if you also struggle to clock in eight solid hours a night for whatever reason (kids, pets, insomnia, stress—there are so many factors that can affect our sleep), then this new launch might be just what your dark circles are looking for.

Ahead is my honest review of Beauty Pie Superluminous Serum Concealer (£12)—with the before-and-after photos to back it up.

If you're not already familiar with Beauty Pie then here's a quick rundown of the concept. The brand creates and sells luxury beauty products without any of the huge markups that you'd normally expect from other brands, mainly because it forgoes extravagant packaging and the products are only available from the brand's own site, which means it doesn't have to pay the retailer fees which are usually passed onto the customer. To access these savings, you sign up for a Beauty Pie membership which allows you to purchase the products at prices that are significantly lower than the RRP. For instance, Superluminous Serum Concealer would sell for £28 at market value, but Beauty Pie members can get it for just £12. No-brainer, right?

Described as half skincare, half concealer, I really wasn't sure what to expect with this product, and was concerned that it wouldn't deliver well on either front. At first swipe, it was certainly lightweight and felt super hydrating—it's enriched with hyaluronic acid so it should be great for moisturising dehydrated under-eyes—and it looks wonderfully light-reflecting on the skin. In fact, I was impressed at how dewy and fresh my under-eye area looked immediately. But what about the coverage?

First thing to note: Beauty Pie itself describes this product as having a "light touch of cover", so it isn't coined as a full-coverage concealer. There are eight shades available, and I have to mention that only two of them are geared towards deep or darker skin tones. That being said, the coverage is so lightweight that the shades are definitely stretchable.

Despite my slightly low expectations, I was seriously wowed with how well this product minimised the dark, shadowy undertones of my under-eyes and brightened up the area. I was expecting to have to layer my usual concealer on top, but this really wasn't the case. It was fast to apply—I just patted it on with the applicator and blended out with my fingertips—and I was happy enough to head straight out on the school run without any other makeup.

Who What Wear UK Next in Beauty Awards 2023: Best in Makeup Marvels

The perfect lip liner does exist—and our judges have found it. By Terry is a brand that's much loved by our editors, and the brand's Hyaluronic Lip Liner blew our judging panel away. Firstly, let's talk about the formula. Packed with shea and macadamia butters, it glides on with zero drag, delivering a creamy swipe of colour that is also nourishing to wear. Not only is it long-wearing, but the retractable nib can be sharpened thanks to the built-in sharpener, ensuring sculpted and defined lips each time.

"As someone who has been wearing lip liner since the early '00s, I know a good one when I try it. Without a word of a lie, By Terry's is the best I've come across," says Who What Wear UK deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. "Unlike most other liners, which can feel dry and take considerable effort to apply, this product glides on with ease, and the formula—a mix of shea and macadamia butters, as well as hyaluronic acid—is super creamy and makes my lips feel smooth and nourished. It lasts too—I've worn it whilst eating and sipping cocktails and it didn't budge. I tested two colours and loved them both. This is top-tier makeup."

It also impressed freelance beauty editor Mica Ricketts, who isn't normally a fan of lip liner. "I don’t tend to be fussed about lip liners, but this one has well and truly converted me, and I’ll be buying it in every shade! It’s lovely to apply—so creamy and smooth—and it really does help to make my lips look more plump and full," she says. "It has brilliant staying power too, but when it does wear off it does so evenly, leaving lips with a natural wash of colour."

Team Who What Wear UK are already enamoured with Rose Inc, but the Skin Enhance Luminous Tinted Serum captured glowing reviews from our judges across the board. Harnessing the power of hydrating hyaluronic acid, plumping peptides and nourishing squalene, this lightweight serum-textured product features encapsulated pigments that burst on contact with the skin. The result? Glowing skin with sheer coverage that looks naturally radiant. It's a huge hit with Who What Wear UK's junior beauty editor Grace Lindsay, as well as Donna Dia, founder of The Beauty Beat.

"I Ioved this product! Really lovely coverage for days when you just want a glow but not a full face of make-up," says Dia. "It felt really light on my face; not sticky or heavy at all. The product lasted the full day and is really great for light coverage with added glow."

Lindsay agrees, "Loads of people had been telling me to try this product, so when I received it, I was a little worried that it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but it truly is amazing," she says. "It’s the perfect base if you don’t like a heavy foundation, and works to even out skin tone whilst giving your complexion a gorgeous glow. It literally sinks into the skin and leaves your complexion feeling soft and hydrated."

Our judges felt that Rose Inc's Softlight Luminous Hydrating Concealer was also a very worthy winner, with its expansive shade range that caters to all skin tones. Our panel also loved that Rose Inc lists its darkest shades first on its website; something rarely seen across the beauty industry. The formula itself is also worth shouting about. Both creamy and high-coverage, it effortlessly blends to blur imperfections whilst leaving skin looking naturally radiant, with a whole host of skincare ingredients to boot.

"This is my go-to concealer. I love the creamy texture, which gives the perfect amount of coverage without being cakey," says Who What Wear UK managing editor Poppy Nash. "It doesn’t crease and normally lasts me all day, so I don’t need to top up under the eyes or around my nose. The brand claims all products are ethically and sustainably made too, which is a huge plus."

Bronzers can be hit or miss, but Pixi's On-The-Glow Bronze stood out as one of the easiest to use that our panel tested. The twist-up stick (touted as a tinted moisture stick) can be swiped onto the skin before blending out effortlessly. Enriched with antioxidants, it encourages a healthy glow whilst giving the skin an instantaneous tint of colour. The shade range was suited to both dark and fair skin amongst our judging panel, too.

"I Iove the formula, how creamy and blendable it is, and the colour," says pro makeup artist Joy Adenuga. "Aside from adding warmth to the skin, I can also use the product as a blush. It works well with both a brush and a beauty blender."

It was also loved by Next in Beauty's head of awards Fiona McIntosh. "I love this bronzer! Great formula and a good range of shades for different skin tones and undertones," she says.

Merit has become a staple makeup brand for many of us, with its chic and concise edits that make getting ready and out the door quicker than ever. But our favourite product has to be Flush Balm—a real multi-tasker in our makeup bags. Serving as both a blush and a lip colour, the product, which is shaped into a domed applicator, applies with a creamy texture that melts into the skin, lending a healthy sheen to cheeks and lips. Our testers also love the range of wearable shades, which vary from deep berry and terracotta to muted pink and taupe.

"I love this balm," says makeup artist Emily Wood. "The shape is really functional—a great on-the-go product that lifts and hydrates whilst adding a subtle flush," she says. "I like the transparent finish because it feels gentle and lightweight on my skin, plus I've started to enjoy seeing my skin's true texture and enhancing what’s already there."

"Now a staple in my makeup bag, I really love Merit’s Flush Balms," says Who What Wear UK beauty editor Eleanor Vousden. "The domed applicator makes application easy, and it can be patted in with a brush or just your fingertips for easy, on-the-go touch-ups. There's a great range of beautiful shades which impart a natural flush of colour to the cheeks with a radiant finish that stays looking fresh throughout the day."

We'll admit that we're used to mascaras boasting sensational claims. But Makeup Revolution's 5D Lash Pow Mascara actually went above and beyond. Our judges wanted to highlight the innovative opening mechanism which pops open as opposed to twisting, keeping the formula from drying out. As for the results, it delivered fanned-out lashes, coating them in a blacker-than-black glaze whilst stretching and lifting them to their full potential. At under £10, our judges were blown away.

"This mascara is brilliant," says makeup artist Mira Parmar. "It gives great volume and length, and the black colour creates lashes to envy. No drying out here with the innovative closure mechanism, and no fall-out or flakiness," she says. "At under £10, this is a great mascara."

"The best thing about this mascara is the closure! It has a click function, meaning it doesn’t dry out as quickly as other mascaras," says Nash. "The wand was nice and chunky and the product went on really well. For the money, I think this is great. No smudging either."

A good makeup setting spray is the MVP for locking in our carefully applied makeup, but not all are created equal. Morphe's Continuous Prep + Set Mist was the favourite amongst the finishing products our judges tested. The continuous spray mechanism makes application even—without drenching your face like some setting mists do—with micro-fine droplets that help to prep and set makeup. The hydrating formula also nourishes the skin, helping to diffuse areas where makeup looks cakey or is just in need of a quick refresh throughout the day. The judges also love that this spray comes in a miniature size for top-ups on the go.

"I wear makeup daily but find I have to reapply throughout the day to keep up the coverage," says Who What Wear UK branded content editor Rebecca Rhys-Evans. "With the Morphe Continuous Prep + Set Mist, foundation and concealer really sets, making it last much longer. Others I’ve tried leave my face feeling damp or sticky, but not this one!"

This winner will be unsurprising to those who swear by this now-iconic blusher that needs no introduction. However, if you're yet to try it, you'll be seriously impressed with its easy-to-blend pigment, delivering a creamy flush of colour to cheeks. And the shade range will have you wanting to try them all. Just a dot on each cheek is all you need, meaning this blusher will last you for ages.

"The lightweight liquid formula has a lovely consistency and is very pigmented, which means that the colour is long-lasting and the product goes a long way," says Who What Wear UK ecommerce analyst Sophie Cookson. "I tried the shade Encourage, which is a darker colour than I usually go for, but the pigment was actually really flattering. It felt natural but also added a little something to my face."

It was also a favourite with Adenuga. "I applied with a brush and found the product goes on and blends really well. The longevity of the blush is very impressive as I didn’t need to reapply all day," she says. "Colour aside, it gave my skin a gorgeous glow after application. A little goes a long way, so I would advise starting with a dot, using the applicator and gradually building the colour."

Prepare to meet your new foundation favourite. Givenchy's Prisme Libre Skin-Caring Matte foundation was a standout amongst our entries. You'd be forgiven for thinking that a matte formula would be heavy, but not this one. Virtually weightless on the skin, it has a luminous quality that looks like your skin, but better.

"Often, finding the right foundation can be like the quest for the perfect pair of jeans, and both come down down to how well a product fits the individual. Prime Libre Foundation manages to capture the 'second skin' effect that many other bases try and fail to achieve," says Who What Wear UK shopping editor Remy Farrell. "Ultra-lightweight, breathable, and still pigmented enough to balance out the dark spots I usually hide with concealer, I check the mirror hours after application and I’m pleasantly surprised by the natural, bright finish that looks like I’m wearing nothing at all," she adds.

The makeup artists amongst our judges also gave it their seal of approval. "I love this hybrid foundation and have done since it launched," says Parmar. "With an 82% skincare formula, this hybrid foundation cares for your skin whilst perfecting it. It goes on beautifully, blends well, is buildable and comes in 35 shades. It says matte but it's actually just like skin and not too matte or dewy—just perfect for radiant, natural-looking skin."

When a lash appointment is hard to come by, these false lashes are a brilliant alternative to give you a realistic flutter in minutes. Our judges liked how easy this kit was to use (the brand's tagline sums it up: "If you can mascara, you can apply Falscara!"). Simply apply the bond adhesive onto your natural lashes with the mascara-like brush, press the lash clusters underneath your lash line and set in place with the sealing solution. If you want a more affordable alternative to lash extensions, this is a great kit to keep on standby for when you want to elevate your lashes.

"I love the look of long lashes so much but I’m yet to find ones that work for me. I’ve tried strips, magnetics and have even been for professional extensions, but nothing has worked for me," says Ejaria. "My lashes and short and very curly which makes application hard, but somehow I managed to apply these seamlessly and with no tears! Those who, like me, can’t apply lashes to save their life, will be very pleased with how easy KISS has made this process."

Complicated, multiple-step eye shadow palettes can strike fear into those of us who aren't a dab-hand at makeup, so many amongst our judging panel loved the simplicity of this one-and-done eye shadow stick, which makes it easy to create beautiful eye shadow looks. The crayon comes in kaleidoscope of matte and shimmer finishes, which just need to be scribbled onto eyes and blended, resulting in a long-wearing finish that doesn't crease or smudge.

"After years of priming my eyelids without success, I thought I was destined to live a life where my eye shadow was constantly creased. Then along came Nudestix," says Eggenberger. "A chunky, soft pencil you can use to line your eyes or build up colour and blend into full-blown shadow, this product promises a high-pigment payoff and zero creasing, and it delivers on both. I really appreciate the accompanying sharpener, too."

It's got the makeup artists' seal of approval too. "An uncomplicated product that gives you room to apply imperfectly with little precision, says Wood. "This pencil does not budge once it’s on. Also, that unique, glossy-matte finish is so enhancing and beautiful. Heaven."

With so many concealers promising to do it all, there was tough competition amongst our entires. However, Kosas' Revealer Concealer really did deliver on its promises. Dark circles? Disappeared. Blemishes? Hidden. Dryness? Smoothed over. Our testing panel applauded its concealing powers as well as its radiant finish. The skincare ingredients also help to boost the skin as you wear it, so excuse us whilst we stockpile this modern makeup-bag icon.

"I’ve found my holy grail concealer," says Vousden. "There isn’t anything I don’t like about this. The creamy consistency melts into the skin and effectively conceals just about everything from dark circles to blemishes and pigmentation without creasing or going patchy throughout the day. It has a radiant finish that is in no way sticky, and adds a luminous sheen to the skin that makes it look like your skin, but better," she says. "I love that it is formulated with hydrating hyaluronic acid, as well as panthenol and arnica to help heal the skin."

Freelance beauty editor Mica Ricketts rates it, too. "I love this concealer! It’s lightweight and creamy yet has brilliant coverage and really brightens the skin. I can use it on dark circles and spots and it works brilliantly on both. In fact, I often skip foundation and other base products when I use this as it makes skin look so good."

Brow gels can be fickle. Whilst some just don't hold up, others leave a flaky residue that no one wants. However, Anastasia Beverley Hills' Brow Freeze is now a mainstay in many of our judges' makeup bags, from makeup artists to editors. With a clear, waxy texture, it tames brow hairs into place without flaking or leaving them stiff. Instead, our testers were left with the arches of their dreams: full, fluffy brows that held all day long. The workable texture sets onto place but is still mouldable, allowing you time to groom hairs into the exact shape you want them.

"This provides an instant feather effect. It's easy to use and holds hairs well," says makeup artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis. What's more, Cookson also loved the results it gave. "I am always on the hunt for a product that will tame my unruly eyebrows. This styling wax definitely has an extreme hold and holds even the thickest of my brow hairs in place," she says. "It's easy to use and is clear, meaning that you can keep it natural or add a brow pencil afterwards."

Dry skin and concealer don't always mix—take it from someone who has combination skin that gets dry more often than not. Although it took me a while to find the right formulas that work for my skin type, I'm happy to report that there are more winners out there on the market than you think.

For starters, those with drier skin will want to look for formulas that provide long-lasting hydration, so no pesky cracks, creases or the dreaded flakes rear their ugly heads. Think hydrating concealers with added skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalane, and shea butter can really help with dryness. You'll probably also want to avoid formulas that mattify since those are likely to make your skin even drier. And if you're looking for a good under-eye concealer, it's a good idea to look for a hydrating concealer for this area of your skin too.

Don't take my word for it, though. Makeup artists agree and have a few concealer recommendations for dry skin below. What Are the Benefits of Using a Concealer?

"Concealer is basically your little magic eraser," explained makeup artist Buster Knight, "It helps brighten under-eyes, cover dark circles, hide blemishes, even out redness, and just makes the skin look more awake and polished. It lets you target the little areas foundation doesn’t fully fix, so the whole face looks smoother without having to pile on loads of product."

What Should Someone With Dry Skin Look for When Choosing a Concealer?

"If your skin leans dry, you want something that adds moisture, not steals it," says Knight, "Look for words like hydrating, creamy, radiant, or serum concealer. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, or vitamin E are great — they help the concealer sit nicely instead of cracking. Avoid super matte, long-wear formulas because they can cling to dry patches."

What's the Best Way to Apply Concealer If You Have Dry Skin?

"Prep is everything," explains Knight. Here are his top tips for applying concealer on dry skin:

1. Start with eye cream or a hydrating moisturiser — give the skin a drink first so the concealer glides on instead of grabbing.
2. Use a small amount at a time — dry skin loves thin layers. Build slowly if you need more coverage.
3. Blend with a damp sponge or your warm fingertips — the warmth or moisture helps melt the product into the skin so it looks fresh, not flaky.
4. Go easy on the powder — if you do set it, use just a touch of a fine, hydrating powder.

If, like me, you have dark circles, you'll know that they are extremely stubborn to treat. The truth is, whilst there are plenty of ways to make dark circles less noticeable, there's no real way to fully "get rid" of them. Dark circles are usually down to genetics, individual facial structure and lifestyle. This means that no eye cream will ever make them entirely disappear—despite the magical claims that many skincare brands might make.

Whilst there are certain aesthetic treatments that can address dark circles, you're generally better off putting your money towards good skincare and wearing SPF to treat the delicate skin around the eye area and help your eyes look their best. However, makeup can be transformative in temporarily concealing dark circles day to day, and has allowed me to accept mine with the knowledge that I can disguise them when I want to.

The good news is that there are many great concealers for dark circles out there, but finding the right one can be tricky. If the formula has too much coverage or is too heavy it will look cakey and settle into fine lines.
