Style Notes: Ever since I saw this picture of Brittany Bathgate, I've been on a mission to finally find the perfect LBD. Whether you like the sculptural, minimalist style that she's modelling, or a more flowing, draped silhouette, there's a black dress for you.

Style Notes: Transitional season dressing is on the horizon, and I'll be turning to the classic knitted midi to see me through. This versatile dress can be layered up for cooler days, but a sleeveless style worn solo with trainers or heels is ideal for those middling temperature days.

2024's autumn/winter trends have been nothing short of excellent and that's coming from a person who is heavily attuned to anti-trend pieces. I've become increasingly impressed with how designers have hit the mark on nostalgic meets modern, in a way that has a timeless appeal. That's across the board, especially when it comes to dresses. Between whimsical ruffled and more is more adornments, many trends have been a throwback to vintage eras, albeit a tad more in keeping with 2024's modern-day essence and the sophisticated sartorialist, who exudes confidence and an unapologetic sense of self.

Trends from 2023 have carried forward, bringing with them weather-appropriate elements and deeper colourways, though there have been some wildcards. When I think of 2024's dress trends, I think of a Carrie Bradshaw-esque exuberance. Many trends are bold and encourage wearability for many occasions if you dare to wear your best for the most mundane jaunts.

There have been many trends to name. From the relevance of specific hues—namely aubergine and rich chocolate browns—to the revival of animal print in a way that feels contemporary, whilst still evoking its characteristic vintage essence. Upon witnessing Chemena Kamali's debut collection for Chloé, I was inspired. Featuring power pink and peachy tones in barely-there voile, Bohemian style frocks, it's light, airy and alluring. You mightn't associate it with winter but that's just the appeal. When paired with hardened boots, it's pure magic.

5. Slip in Style

Style Notes: *Sounds klaxon*! Gowns have arrived in lustrous lacquers and glossy slip iterations, so you needn't worry if you're invited to any black tie events. Slip dresses have never been more relevant as we transcend into party season.

Style Notes: Due to the festive season, feather and fluffy adornments are a recurring trend every winter, but this year they've dominated in a major way. From fully feather-swathed minis to delicate feather trim, there's something for all.

Nowadays, there are few things as rare as an Emma Watson sighting. Luckily, when we do get a glimpse of the actress and activist, it’s always something to write home about. This time, Watson attended Elton John’s AIDS Foundation’s viewing party of the Academy Awards, and in true style, she opted for a fashion-forward look that immediately had the Who What Wear office buzzing.

Few and far between, our most recent sightings of Watson have been a preppy Prada look, a bold McQueen moment and an avant-garde situation way back last summer. It turns out I’m not alone, because recently, I’ve had friends texting me about the festive parties and weddings on their calendars and asking about which dresses I’d recommend adding to their carts.

Has anyone else not got a free evening until 2024? With work events, pre-Christmas plans with friends and my birthday to fit in, December is always a manic one. And as someone who is pretty unorganised (hey, at least I can admit it), I often find myself scrambling to put an outfit together an hour before I have to run out of the house. This year, though, I'm set on my changing my ways, and have instead hit the shops early to see the most expensive party pieces IRL. With Westfield within walking distance of my house, this was of course the destination I headed to to check out some of my favourite high-street brands.

And what did I find? Sparkly jeans from Zara, an even sparklier bandeau dress from Mango and the perfect LRD (that's little red dress) from H&M. So whether you like to go all out for party season or keep it lowkey with jeans and a nice top, I've put together so easy outfit formulas you can copy, no matter the festive plan.

THE BEST ZARA PARTY PIECES:

Style Notes: I've been looking for the perfect pair of sparkly jeans, and I think I've finally found them. While they're selling out super fast online, I've seen them in multiple stores around London. We all know Zara can be a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to sizing, but my tip for these jeans is to size up. I first tried them on in my usual size, and although they fit, they were snug around the waist. I added matching sparkly shoes (I love the look of a pointed-toe popping out at the bottom of baggy jeans), and a tailored waistcoat to create the outfit I would wear to festive drinks.

Style Notes I'm a sucker for a matchy-matchy outfit, so of course I was instantly taken by this sweater and mini skirt duo (plus the matching bag). As an unexpected party look, this is the one you can dress up for a night out but easily add tights, chunky flat boots and a maxi coat for day. I would also split up the set and wear the mini for a night out with a sheer top.

THE BEST MANGO PARTY PIECES:

Style Notes: Like most people, I'm completely taken by all things silver this season. So much so, I was drawn to this silver sequin dress like a magpie as soon as I walked into the Mango store. It was pretty stretchy, so I took my usual size (I'm a 10), and I would wear it to an event with a black oversized maxi coat. I love this one, but I would like it even closer to touching the floor.

Style Notes: If you’re looking to buy into one of the biggest trends for 2023, then this red mini dress is the one for you. There's no escaping red this season, and why would you want to when it looks so luxe? I can't believe this satin, draped-detail dress is under-£30! I love how loose-fit it is so I can dance around without being conscious that it's too clingy.

Style Notes: First things first, you'll have to imagine this satin set steamed to perfection. But I'm all for a silky suit for party season to make you feel like you're out and about in your PJs. I would always advise on adding heels, to stop it from actually looking like you're wearing your bed clothes. Both of these pieces also come in four other colours, and I can guarantee they look so much more expensive than they actually are.

Style Notes: While a '60s style shift wouldn't usually be my vibe, this Cos spotted style (they're big, but subtle) is just too good. I've popped it over a polka dot long-sleeved top and ankle boots. While I'm a big fan of these boots, they were the only shoes in-store so I would actually team this look with knee-highs or a mule so they don't make my legs look even shorter—I'm 5'4". I would definitely wear this outfit for a dinner, there's a lot of room in this dress to eat all the festive treats!

Having delved into some of the UK's most impressive closets thanks to our Best Wardrobes in Britain franchise, I think I can confidently say that Pippa Vosper has one of the best dress collections in the country. I haven't had the pleasure of exploring her wardrobe (yet!) but it's plain to see from her Instagram feed: 75.4k followers (of which I am one) are treated to whimsical, dreamy, dress-centric imagery on a very regular basis, and we can't get enough of it. So alluring are her choices—white scalloped clouds of Cecilie Bahnsen, swathes of vintage cerise silk-satin—that I'm certain she could make the most hardened tracksuit wearer feel like slipping into something fancy for a low-key coffee run. "I can feel my energy go up a level when I put a beautiful dress on," says Vosper, explaining that they are, for her, an "immediate mood lifter". "It makes me stand taller, which of course has everything to do with confidence in that moment. I definitely stand in a different way when wearing a dress as opposed to jeans and a blazer—more elegant, more composed."

Starting her fashion career as a stylist, Vosper now divides her time between presenting, hosting, organising events and writing—she's particularly adept at telling personal stories you drink up until the very last drop. We share a mutual passion for a fantastic frock, so I thought it high time to combine her two skills and have the gown guru tell us the tales and memories tied to her most significant dresses.

The dress-related recollections go way back, and Vosper recalls her first important frock moment when she was around 10 years old. "Chelsea Girl was the one place all the older girls I knew in my neighbourhood (I grew up just off of the King’s Road in Chelsea) shopped. I remember my mother taking me to the store one Saturday morning and buying me a deep green angora mini dress. After buying the dress, we went to the hair salon and I had my hair cut into a (what I considered to be) a very grown up bob. It was a moment!" she says, noting that it wasn't until her teens that dresses started to play a more important part in building her personal style and confidence. "I was self-conscious about my body (as most of us are at that age) and I found that dresses covered the parts I was most unsure of. I felt more confident in dresses and soon worked out how to dress for my body shape (athletic/boyish), then it became a discovery of shapes, patterns and fabrics I loved," she explains. Nowadays she has the selection process down to a fine art, and I hereby anoint Vosper as London's Dress Queen, a nomenclature she finds amusing but fathomable: "That’s so funny, and lovely to hear," she says. "I think I am seen as a lover of dresses as that’s mostly all I wear in my Instagram photographs. It’s true, I do have an extensive collection of dresses as that’s the item of clothing I always feel most confident in. There are the little black dresses, summer dresses (of which they are many!) and then more conceptual pieces by Haider Ackermann, Sacai and Junya Watanabe. I actually love the more abstract, predominantly black dresses, but never seem to show these on my Instagram account."

"This was during the shows in Paris. It seems so long ago that we could travel, let alone attend fashion shows! My friend, the designer Gül Hürgel, was showing her collection and I had loaned this dress from her to wear to the shows that day. It was such a special piece and on returning to London, I found that Gül had kindly sent it to me as a gift. It’s one of those dresses that will be worn to events over the coming years and will always have such great memories attached to it."

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI, LONDON

"This is a story of love and loss and eventual joy! I had asked an emerging designer to create my wedding dress. We had finalised the design, I had chosen fabrics and was three months away from the big day. On New Year’s Eve, he chose to tell me via email that his business was picking up and that he could no longer design my dress. I was three months away from my wedding and no other designer would make a bespoke dress in time. I had known for years that if I had £50K for a bespoke Giambattista Valli, I would have asked him to design my dress. The next best thing would be to see if I could loan one of his creations. I worked in fashion at the time and knew the PR Director for the house. Giambattista agreed immediately, and I was invited to his absolutely breathtaking atelier in Paris for fittings. On arrival, a rail of incredible dresses from his couture shows past and present had been hung on a rail for me to select from. Not being couture model size, the dress I chose was a little small, so Giambattista and those that work with him offered to alter the dress for me as a wedding gift. It was shipped to London in time for my wedding. It was quite possibly one of the most wonderful things I could imagine happening at that time. Such kindness and generosity in saving my wedding dress disaster. I did have to ship it back to Paris, but the memory will always be with me."

"The style and fabric of this dress make you feel as though you have been transported to a bygone era. I wore this dress when visiting Lake Como for the first time. I had always wanted to stay at Villa d’Este and my husband and I booked to stay on our wedding anniversary. It was one of the most beautiful places I have stayed and the dress was the perfect fit for our anniversary dinner on the terrace, overlooking the water. I pack this dress each time I travel to Italy, it’s such a perfect piece for evenings spent drinking wine in the Italian sun."

"I bought this incredible vintage dress for my husband’s birthday party at Babington House. The event was scheduled for 40 of our friends at Babington House in July 2020. It’s quite dramatic and that’s certainly the look I’m going for—it will be the first time I will have dressed up for an event in over a year, so it has to be utterly worth it."
