I am not about to convince you that you need another coat. We live in England, so you probably already own three that you've worn this week. "Well, yes," notes Ian Griffiths, creative director of Max Mara. "The teddy bear coat has been a best-seller for Max Mara since it was first introduced in 2013. So we're talking about 13 years later, and with no sign of the appetite for the teddy bear coat abating. So, I think you can truly describe it as a timeless item or an item whose appeal is timeless—what I would describe as an object of desire."

"Teddy coats return year after year because they’re genuinely timeless," adds celebrity stylist Emma Lane. "They’re cosy, practical and endlessly adaptable, which makes them the piece people reach for when the temperature drops. The Italian word 'coccole', meaning 'cuddle'; [I wanted to design] a coat that would cuddle you like a parent would a child. "We first showed it in 2013. It was regarded as being almost shocking because it was so big, when everything else was so small. On my hunt, I took myself to long-time high-street hero, H&M, as many a little bird has told me that its coats, jackets and outerwear just hit different. There's a whole range of hand-made, hand-finished, wool-blend, scarf-detailed and fluff-trimmed coats in all colours, shapes, sizes and silhouettes, which will suit not only a wide range of shoppers' tastes but also budgets, too.

Style Notes: It's official: we are in a leopard-print renaissance, and I want in on the action. Enter the ring, this dark leopard, calf-length beauty from H&M. Style Notes: Okay, I couldn't resist trying on a shorter jacket style too, this time from H&M's Christmas 2025 line. I have been eyeing up this shiny green bomber with fur trim for some time, and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Slightly oversized, made of padded nylon and featuring an array of pockets and vents, plus a plush, black collar, it is something I can see myself reaching for daily. It could easily be dressed down for weekends, say with your favourite sweatshirt, leggings and trainers, or even dressed up for a fun night out with friends, maybe with a sparkly dress and statement handbag and kitten heels. The ruching on the arms is not to be missed, giving them a slightly curved effect which looks cool and designer-derived. You honestly wouldn't think this jacket was high street. If you see me at the pub wearing this very jacket soon, you'll know where I got it.

Style Notes: Lastly, for something super cosy, sumptuous and tactile, I gave this short teddy jacket a spin. This feels like just the ticket for those days when you can't quite decide what to wear, but want to be bundled up, warm and a bit hygge. I can see this going with my favourite sweats, leggings and shearling boots for off-duty days picking up a hot chocolate and treats at my local cafe, only to head home to snuggle up to watch the most nostalgic films on TV. This season, the high street has offered up a host of new outerwear options for us, and after sifting through hundreds of options, I've settled on these three standout styles. Whether layered over simple knits or jeans, or accompanying an elegant dress for an evening out, these chic coats are up to the challenge.

For winter 2025, Zara, COS and Mango are looking to classic silhouettes and refined details when designing their standout coats. Notched collars, longline silhouettes and classic belted details are all relied upon to bring a timeless appeal to these pieces, ensuring they remain key parts of your wardrobe. Style Notes: Already this season, Zara has had its fair share of best-selling pieces come to the fore, from its sell-out reversible jackets to funnel-neck silhouettes. For winter, the brand is taking a more classic approach, leaning into tried and true silhouettes that will go the distance, and instantly convince onlookers that this piece must have cost hundreds of pounds. The structured shoulders, classic notch collar and deep pockets all create a refined appeal. Personally, I can't decide if I like it more worn open or cinched with the matching belt. Here, I tried on size small, which fit me just right. If you want extra room for thick jumpers, I'd recommend sizing up.

Style Notes: For COS, it's a nod to the classics. The smart wool coat features a long hemline and double-breasted buttons, finished with a belt for good measure. The fabric is endlessly soft, moving easily with the body with enough space to layer up plenty of knits underneath as needed. There's also a button higher up near the neckline, which can bring a more structured effect to the neckline if desired. Both my fellow editor and I fell in love with COS's double-faced wool coat, and found our usual sizes were a perfect fit.

3. Mango

Style Notes: For years, I've believed that Mango is overlooked for its outerwear collections. Season after season, the brand offers up elevated silhouettes in rich palettes that often outpace its high street counterparts. This season, it's a bold funnel-neck style that has all my attention in a deep burgundy shade. Here, I tried on size small, which fit neatly at the shoulders with room for layers underneath. After a few months of whipping around town in nothing but a boxy blazer, cropped suede bomber or decadent funnel-neck jacket, the plummeting temperature has truly made it impossible to wear anything other than a chic winter coat. This isn’t a moment for lamenting, however.

Considerably more durable and boxier than other outerwear styles, winter coats shine in unforgivable conditions like biting winds, pithy rain and dark skies. Given their utilitarian origins, winter coats are a stylish protective layer that not only makes it possible for you to get around in harsh climates but also ensures you appear polished and put-together doing it.

It’s true, there’s no piece as versatile and hard-working as a winter coat. The longline shape makes it possible for you to cover what’s hidden underneath, say you’re briefly nipping to the high road to run a few errands in knitted loungewear trousers and a pair of trainers, or make an entire outfit out of it. My personal inclination is to combine both—choose a style that can stand alone while commuting, before opening it to reveal something more considered and slinky once I arrive at my destination.

Oftentimes, I’ve gravitated to the cut and shape of a specific style only to be deterred by the hue. In some cases, I’ve become besotted with sweeter pastel shades only to realise I’ll be limited by what I can wear below. Or, I’ve lusted over darker luxe tones before being dissuaded by the way they envelop my entire body.

In saying that, one of the benefits of investing in a winter coat is that it’s less impacted by the trend cycle compared to other garments, so you can feel confident knowing that the style you purchase won’t seem dated or passé by the time the next season rolls around. Still, there are some colours that are naturally more popular than others and will make you look a cut above the rest.
