I knew it would be an It bag when supermodel Bella Hadid was spotted wearing it multiple times. Well, it went viral after that, as predicted. Coach is a brand that’s been flexible with each generation since its launch in 1941. Throughout the decades, we’ve seen the brand stay true to its roots while adjusting to the ever-changing fashion zeitgeist. Coach was a mainstay in my household, as my mother would always grab her monogrammed hobo bag from Coach before she left the house. Now, the label has stayed in step with the current trends seamlessly, and the Brooklyn Shoulder Bag is a testament to that.

I’m a quintessential stylish NYC Gen Zer. I carry practically my entire life in my bags: laptop, phone, book, notebook, disposable camera, makeup pouch, sometimes shoes, etc. I love a capacious bag. My Coach Brooklyn Shoulder Bag 39 Review

The leather of this bag is durable and structured with a flat bottom as opposed to the usual soft leather and shapelessness of other bags. It also feels lightweight, mainly because of the thick, wide strap and flat bottom. I’m used to the shoulder pains from other bags, so when I put the Brooklyn bag on my shoulder with all my belongings in it, I was pleasantly surprised.

My walks to the train didn’t leave me sweating in the NYC heat, because the weight distribution of my things in this bag was even. I even went to meet some friends for a yap session, and we ended up taking a long walk. Usually, if I have my laptop with me, I would drop a bag off at home before an outing. The lightweight feeling, despite my heavier things, was persisting. We walked and talked for about an hour and a half, and I still didn’t break an uncomfortable sweat.

There is a magnet closure that might not be everyone’s favorite for safety measures, especially living in a big city, but I find it easier than a zipper closure. I like to have my things within reach as quickly and efficiently as possible because NYC moves fast. I kept all my smaller items: deodorant, my cards, hand sanitizer, chargers, etc., in the pouch on the inside of the bag, which has a gold hardware button as its closure. That came in handy for grabbing my metro card for the subway or my lip gloss for an occasional application. What’s nice about the pouch is that it’s also roomy, so I don’t have to dig and dig for my things.

Riding the train with a large, structured bag isn’t so bad when I’m standing, but don’t expect someone to let your bag have a seat next to you. On my lap, the bag is a little awkward to sit with, only because I’m very petite. Speaking of, if you’re petite (5’4” and under), it might look a little big on you. Trust me—I’m 5’, but I’m willing to compromise the look a little bit for comfort and convenience.

My Final Thoughts

Other than being maybe too big for my proportions as a petite fashion person, I think this is the right bag for someone on the go or who works in a city and has to commute. The bag does come in a smaller size, 28. However, after testing size 39, which fits everything I need to take with me daily, I don’t think the 28 would be big enough as an everyday bag for someone who works in a city. The stiffer, durable leather makes it easier to schlep throughout the city with no shoulder pain, which was the main positive for me.

I understand why this bag went viral last year; the quality-to-price ratio is impeccable. The shape of the bag is modern, expensive-looking, and elegant yet casual enough for everyday use. I can tell this is a bag that will last for years by the quality of the leather, if you treat it right. That’s another point for the price. Overall, I would recommend this bag to someone who needs a spacious, functional bag that doesn’t compromise on style.

You might expect JLO to spend December in sequins, sequins and more sequins on a fabulous private beach somewhere, however in these images we see Jennifer in a more relaxed setting, in her back garden with her mother Guadalupe, and children, Emme and Max, while wearing a Christmas jumper. 

I'd never have thought JLO's Christmas would look anything like my own, however I do hope to celebrate on December 25th in my very best festive knit, on my own sofa as a family of four. Instead of LA, I usually spend my own Christmas Day at my family home in Manchester with my parents and sister. We open presents in our festive pyjamas over a Bucks Fizz, and then all dress up for Christmas Day lunch, typically wearing cashmere jumpers and our fanciest midi dresses, and then finish our last bite of trifle just in time for the Queen's Speech. Then we collapse on the sofa for a marathon of Christmas TV.

This year has seen us all reassess what is important and valuable to us, and so nostalgic family memories and traditions feel more sentimental than ever. When it comes to Christmas gifts I want to be more considered, and buy things I am certain my loved ones will actually want. This has been a difficult year for everyone, and so not only do I want to make an extra effort to really think about what will make them feel special, but I want to attempt some Pinterest-worthy wrapping and make some thoughtful, really personal cards.

While I work on my own Christmas lists, I spoke to the other editors on the WWW team to find out about their own traditions and the Coach items they are eying up as the perfect gifts for both themselves and their loved ones this year. 

Joy Montgomery, Shopping Editor:

My typical Christmas usually sees me and my husband trekking all over the country—from Wales to the south coast to south London—lugging excessively large bags of presents along with us. There's the chance this year might be a little different, and there’s part of me that would miss those long train journeys, sipping coffee and watching the English countryside flash by if I can't make my usual journey. I have no doubt that we will find a way to make it work, be it a chilly, socially-distanced walk or a cheeky toast via Zoom. And, whatever happens, I plan to consume copious amounts of turkey. It is tradition after all.

It has become somewhat of a tradition in my household that everyone wears red on Christmas day. Despite the fact that this year I will be on the opposite side of the world to my family (who are based in Melbourne, Australia) I still plan to keep the tradition alive with my flatmate. I’ll be wearing the hue, alongside some statement accessories to keep myself feeling festive for all of those inevitable breakfast Christmas Day Zoom calls to my family back home.

I don’t really know what to expect this Christmas when it comes to seeing family but I do know that my favourite thing to do over the period can’t be taken away and that’s giving presents to people. While I’m very lucky that I’ve got my husband and toddler to see over the holiday period, I haven’t hugged my mum or twin sister (or any other family member) since March, so I’d very much like to give them something they love. I honestly love getting people gifts—it always eclipses anything I get. Other than that my favourite tradition over the holidays is wrapping presents hurriedly on Christmas Eve (love a deadline), while eating cheese and drinking wine and watching something like Home Alone or Die Hard (I maintain it is a Christmas film).

Last year I spent Christmas in a total daze with a newborn and a cold, so I’m hoping that for any celebrations this season—whether very low-key or not—that I can try to relax, kick back and enjoy the moment a little more. My plans? I’ll take any excuse to get cosy with my husband and my little boy, so hopefully we can have a brisk walk on a sunny winter’s day and spend the rest of it lounging on the sofa totally full from roast potatoes and pigs-in-blankets! 

And my own list

I've already told you a little bit about what my typical Christmas Day looks like, but these are the items I'm loving for the festive season.

It's really started to get a little frost-bitten out there. Yes, it's December and it's always this chilly, but I still never quite seem to be ready for it. Those of you that, unlike me, are prepared, seem to be beating the cold weather by swaddling yourselves in a shearling, borg or teddy-bear coats, and now I'm spotting the fuzzy texture crossing over to the bag department en masse. This winter, shearling bags are everywhere. 

It's no wonder that one of the snuggest and warmest fabrics around is becoming a cult favourite with the fashion crowd. We've been granted our fair share of "duvet" dressing over the years with quilted coats, skirts and jackets but this takes it to a whole new level.

The dynamic duo Proenza Schouler sent their models down the runway in tailoring and draping - punctuated with shearling pouch bags, artfully folded over and tucked under the model's arm. This is the perfect example of the versatility of this fabric and how darn good it looks with black leather. 

I love the evolution of this trend and how brands have utilised it in such varied ways. You have multiple hues from the ever-colourful Kurt Geiger, fluid shapes from Nanushka and artfully trimmed totes from Gucci and UGG x Telfar. Now while I'm on the topic of the latter, the two have come together to bring the shearling and suede experience of one to combine with the handbag genius of the other. They have created a scale of sizes, all adorning a shearling trimming to the logo and edges. 

Other cult brands who can boast that this isn't their first rodeo in the teddy/shearling department include Stand and Staud, so you won't be surprised to see them in the running for some of the best offerings out there right now. The much-loved DeMellier Tokyo bag is also now available in a delightful shearling finish.

One more thing I love about the shearling texture (I know, I'm a little obsessed with it but I'm nearly done, I promise) is that you can enjoy the borg-like bobbly texture or a fluffier surface like that of the Hereu bag which is just so, so soft.

Floral print in spring: It's about as reliable as day following night. Every time this season pulls up, the fashion collective regroups, reevaluates and rethinks flower motifs for the new moment. Chloë Sevigny stopped by our Sundance photo suite—the Who What Wear x Vida Tequila x Glam App Lounge on Main Street—to talk film, fashion, and more.

Sevigny is at the annual Park City, Utah, festival to promote her latest project, Love & Friendship, director Whit Stillman’s adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Lady Susan. In the comedy, she plays Alice, the American confidante of the cunning Lady Susan Vernon (played by a spectacular Kate Beckinsale).

“Lady Susan is a bit of a bad girl and has a reputation,” Sevigny says. “I think we all have girlfriends that we love and adore and are wild, and we kind of live out our fantasies through them and their brazenness.”

We certainly live out our style fantasies through the actress, who nailed winter dressing in a shearling Coach coat paired with a Gucci blouse and vintage Levi’s. Keep reading for more from our exclusive interview.

Who What Wear: What made you want to be a part of Love & Friendship?

Chloë Sevigny: I am just a fan of [director] Whit [Stillman]. I think he has such an original voice, and even though I know it’s an Austen and an adaptation, I knew he would infuse it with his own Whit kind of humor and pacing. I just think he is a true artist in the film industry, which there are a bunch of them out there, but they are not always knocking on my door, so I was really thrilled to work with him again. I loved working with him on Last Days of Disco. I love that movie. I’m so proud of it. I’d always wanted to do a period piece—you know, the sweeping period drama—so I was game!

WWW: Can you tell us about your character in the film, Alicia? What intrigued you about her?

CS: My character is an American in England, and she’s married to a respectable man played by Stephen Frye. She lives vicariously through her girlfriend Lady Susan, played by Kate Beckinsale. Lady Susan is a bit of a bad girl and has a reputation, and I think we all have girlfriends that we love and adore and are wild, and we kind of live out our fantasies through them and their brazenness. So I kind of related to [Alicia] in that way, because I have girlfriends who are so outspoken, bright, and witty. My best friend Natasha Lyonne, for instance. I’m always so enamored with her and how she can control herself in situations. It’s the same with my character and Lady Susan.

WWW: What did you enjoy most about filming this project?

CS: I think going through and working with the costume designer, and from the different layers of the undergarments and the fittings. It was such a fantasy. And they have such a handle on it. They do so many period pictures in Dublin, and everybody was just so enthusiastic and good at their craft. It’s nice to work with people who are really good at what they do.

WWW: The costumes are pretty spectacular! Did you find them challenging?

CS: I mean, not so much. The things one would think, like going pee. But probably all the volume, because we are not used to it. Of course I’m wearing a huge jacket today, which is often problematic, but the volume I think was the most surprisingly challenging thing to overcome. I think my favorite look was a pale blue look that I wore that was an actual vintage piece from the costume house in London.

WWW: You have been a style hero for so many women. Who are the stylish women who inspire you?

CS: Just friends of mine who are a little more adventurous in their style, like Liz Goldwyn in Los Angeles. I think she has amazing style. My friend Tara Subkoff has really great style. And my friend Lizzie Bucato, and Jen Brill in New York City. I think she always looks super cool in whatever she wears. They are my standouts. 

WWW: What’s your favourite piece you own?

CS: I have this hood that is from the ’40s. It’s a black cashmere hood and it has all these bronze sequins all over it. And of course, I live in New York and it’s very cold, so I’ve been wearing that a lot; it’s my new favourite piece. And it’s a piece that makes people really happy, and I like that a lot. I hear people who don’t even recognize me say, “Oh my God, look at her hood!” People audibly get excited about it and it’s nice to wear something that can make people smile. Sometimes my boyfriend is like, “Why are you wearing that crazy blue blah blah blah,” and I was like, “Because it makes women smile and I like to see that.” It’s fun.

WWW: Your jeans are amazing! What are the?

CS: These are Levi’s I actually wore in the ’90s, and they were really long. I used to step on them and there was that half-moon hole in the back. I wore them to the Venice Film Festival with Boys Don’t Cry in like ’99 or something. And I still fit in them, which is dope.

WWW: Can you tell us about your most recent fashion purchase or discovery?

CS: Oh God, I mean I purchase things almost every day—it’s my addiction. Funny enough, Tory Burch sent me these hiking boots for Sundance with red laces, and I was like feeling these weird Tory Burch hiking boots. They are going to be my jam back in New York City. I mean, I’ve always been into that classic ’80s red-lace hiking boot thing. Maybe I’ll incorporate them into some outfit while I’m here. It was kind of more like a surprising thing.

WWW: What has been the most rewarding part of your career thus far?

CS: I just actually directed my first short film called Kitty. It’s about a little girl who turns into a cat, and it stars a 7-year-old girl. I think that’s been the most rewarding. I’ve always wanted to do it but was not confident enough. But I somehow found the security in my relationship and where I am in my life, my age, that I was like I’m just going to do this. And not to toot my own horn or anything, but I think I did a really great job. It was really rewarding and just communicating to different people on set and the actors, I just felt really comfortable. Of course, it was only three days; if you had to sustain over a couple of weeks I think it would be a whole different thing. But I think I want to keep going with that.

WWW: Is there something you haven’t done in your career yet that you would like to explore?

CS: I think I would like to do more naturalistic style acting. I did a series on Netflix called Bloodline, and I feel like the acting was very naturalistic, and I’d like to do bigger parts. I think the only starring roles I ever had were Kids and Boys Don’t Cry, and I feel like I would like to have bigger, more challenging roles.

Learn how to walk in heels! They might not be something you wear to work every day, but if a time comes when you need to dress up, it's a lot easier if you have already mastered the skill of walking in them.
