With summer just around the corner, I’ve been thinking about nailing down a few easy outfit formulas that will make getting dressed a breeze over the next few months. The first look I’m adding straight into my rotation? Capri pants with low-profile trainers—courtesy of Bella Hadid.

If the influx of starry arrivals touching down at the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport wasn’t enough warning, consider this your official announcement that the annual Cannes Film Festival has officially begun.

The theatrical event is the crème de la crème of theatrical excellence, but considering that it’s hosted on the Côte d'Azur, the captivating looks that grace the red carpet are what really steal the spotlight. This is not to say that they’re swanning around the French Riviera wearing the latest silhouettes showcased in Paris. (Though these looks are certainly luxurious and punctuated with designer accessories, like Demi Moore’s new season Gucci and Julia Louis-Dreyfus's intrecciato leather Bottega Veneta.) Instead, these looks serve as proof that simplicity will always be a shortcut to elegance.

In the almost decade-long career I’ve had in the industry, one of the biggest lessons I’ve gleaned from those with a little more experience under their belt is that ditching superfluous trends and developing your own shorthand for sophistication will actually make you look the most stylish. Whether this be a pair of excellently tailored jeans that fit you perfectly, or a black blazer crafted from the most sumptuous materials, it will always help you feel more refined, confident and considered.

This is a style philosophy that the venerable actresses in Cannes this weekend adhered to, and one that I’m proudly adopting, too. Here, the actress and comedian takes a literal approach to French fashion in her Breton striped shirt and linen blazer, but it’s her contemporary bootcut jeans that feel the most relevant. The Boulevard de la Croisette, also known to locals as the Temple of Idleness, is a three-kilometre stretch of seafront that snakes through the glamorous alcove that is the Côte d'Azur. But for a week each May, the palm-laden promenade is transcendent, alight with the glitz and glamour of fashion starlets, film titans, studio bigwigs, and Hollywood heavyweights as they descend on the French Riviera for the annual Cannes Film Festival.

The prestigious event has been in operation since 1938, where it has awarded emerging and established auteurs and actors alike with the career-defining honours like the Palme d'Or, the highest prize given for best film outside of the Academy Awards, for close to a century. This is the place that nurtured talents like Jean-Luc Godard, introduced transcendent scene-stealers including Isabelle Huppert and Mikey Madison and becomes a flurry of sequins and plumage as the who’s who of Hollywood make a home-away-from-home in the revolving doors of opulent properties like the Hôtel Martinez. Suffice to say, completely luminary.

Given the reputation that precedes it, it’s only fitting that the red carpet reflects the grand and theatrical essence of the films that the event celebrates. There has been no shortage of looks worthy of an eight-minute-long standing ovation, which is the average length of applause that succeeds the closing credits, though the event is no stranger to sartorial controversy either.

In 2015, the Cannes Film Festival decreed a strict dress code that only permitted female attendees to wear high heels, leading to an incredibly elegant rebellion by the likes of Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence, who either decided to go barefoot or wear flip-flops on the red carpet, respectively. In 2025, a mere decade later, organisers declared there would be “no naked dressing”, putting a ban on revealing clothing for the sake of “decency”.

In light of this dimming of frivolity, the drama showcased on the silver screen inside the Grand Théâtre Lumière is certainly enough to stir. For the occasion, the actress wore a painstakingly accurate recreation of one of Christian Dior’s most iconic creations, the Junon dress. Dating back to 1949, the design was realised in the Monsieur’s signature shade of 18th-Century grey and was dusted with iridescent beading and embroidery before cascading into a petal-like skirt made of silk tulle and an ombre finish that is reminiscent of ostrich feathers, the bird associated with the mythological Roman goddess from whom the style derives its name.

Style Notes: Another masterclass in fashion history came courtesy of Elle Fanning when she attended the premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood… during the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. With sprightly femininity and joie de vivre, she donned a reworked version of Christian Dior’s New Look. At the premiere of The Apprentice, the biographical drama about Donald Trump’s ascent as a real estate tycoon, she wore a tri-coloured dress designed by Haider Ackermann for Jean Paul Gaultier's spring/summer 2023 couture collection. With a concealed train, the moment the Australian actress lifted the back of her dress to reveal a hint of green against the red backdrop and black bodice, it cemented the event as one that could also serve as a forum for international politics and calls to action.

The last thing I expected whilst scrolling through the glamorous shots from the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this morning was to see that when they’re not dressed head-to-toe in couture, the celebrity style set has been embracing a casual dress trend that's far more low-key: the humble polo dress.

Equal parts sporty and sophisticated, this sleek yet relaxed silhouette has become somewhat of a go-to for celebrities off the red carpet in Cannes, and, conveniently, it’s a trend the high street can't get enough of right now.

Spotted on Alexa Chung, the model and presenter opted for a black ribbed style in a sleek mini cut. Styling hers with pointed-toe slingbacks and a Balenciaga City Bag (£2090), Chung accessoried with elevated items that proved the simple dress can hold its own in even the most elevated of settings.

Also taking the trend out for a spin on the French Riviera, model Maria Borges went for a knee-length, form-fitting style in a classic striped print with pointed-toe heels and oversized sunglasses late last week.

Perhaps it’s the polo dress’s preppy undertones—those simple lines and the sharp collar—that see it take on a Riviera-ready energy. Case in point: Eva Longoria, who opted for an ankle-skimming, pale blue polo-style dress paired with simple nude pumps as she relaxed between events last week.

And whilst many of the celebrity looks were undoubtedly designer, the beauty of this trend lies in its accessibility. The high street is brimming with elevated takes, from H&M’s black ribbed mini (a dead ringer for Chung’s) to Reformation’s striped number that channels the same refined ease.

It’s a happy coincidence that the Cannes Film Festival lands in May, primed to boost me with styling inspiration to see me through the summer months. While the red carpet looks ignite my imagination, it’s the off-duty moments—the airport arrivals, hotel exits and casual street strolls—that actually influence what ends up in my summer wardrobe.

Stepping out of the Hotel Martinez on day three of the festival, Ariana Greenblatt delivered exactly the kind of understated, impossibly chic look that proves Cannes' casual style is just as compelling as the red carpet couture. If you've followed Bella Hadid's style journey for any length of time, then you'll know that she really comes into her own once the clock strikes Cannes and the model descends upon the French Riviera. Amping up the elegance, Hadid's Cannes Film Festival looks are nothing short of iconic, and once again, despite a last-minute update to the festival's dress code, the model confirmed that always be one of Cannes' best dressed.

Some fashion fans will stand by the Met Gala or the Oscars as their favourite fashion event of the year. For me though, Cannes Film Festival trumps both every single year. With a 10-day itinerary and the inimitably stylish backdrop of the French Riviera, the iconic film festival is a breeding ground for impeccable style, and I am never disappointed.

Whilst I'm always enamoured by the red carpet style at Cannes, it's the off-duty looks that really capture my attention. Aligning with the rise in temperatures across Europe, the May event feels like the start of the summer season, and as such offers a healthy dose of summer styling inspiration. Ever on the lookout for off-duty inspiration, I've already spotted three denim trends that have been championed by the style set over the past few days.

THREE DENIM TRENDS THAT CELEBRITIES IN CANNES ARE BACKING RIGHT NOW

1. WHITE JEANS

Style Notes: I always come back to white jeans during spring and early summer. The light shade is so easy to style with a capsule wardrobe, offering a breath of fresh air and a crisp and bright touch to all of my summer looks. It's true that Cannes is all about the high-octane glamour of the red carpet, but for me, it's the little laid-back Croisette moments in-between the nightly premieres that provide the best fashion inspiration for real life. Whether jetting into Nice airport like a seasoned traveller (Laura Harrier is this season's queen of the casual Cannes looks) or hopping aboard a yacht in the optimum Riviera ensemble, these are the celebrity looks that can actually have an impact on how you rework your own summer wardrobe or pack your next holiday suitcase. 

One good example in the last day of events comes from French It girl and Chanel favourite, Lily-Rose Depp. Wearing a clean, minimalistic combination of a black fit-and-flare micro-mini dress and low-heeled slingback sandals, this was the ultimate lesson in not only less-is-more but that short hemlines really do work best with a mid-height shoe. Flats can feel challenging with a lot of leg on show, and high heels can, conversely, feel a bit OTT. This is a shoe style that basically originates from Paris—Chanel first introduced these classic slingbacks in 1957—and has remained a firm favourite amongst French fashion editors, stylists and influencers ever since. They wear them with everything from jeans and wide-leg trousers to shorts and every dress length. The demure nature of these pumps can soften the most daring of looks (note the low neckline here to boot), and add an elegant spin to off-duty outfits too. 

Style Notes: Even Depp's matching black sunglasses are the chicest choice.

Diamonds, feathers, and more tulle than you'd find in the wardrobe of a prima ballerina—it can only be Cannes Film Festival, and 2023's celebrations are proving to be just as glamorous as ever. 

As the world's elite filmmakers—from A-list actors to directors most talent dream of working with—for two weeks in the year, the French Riviera transforms into a star-studded hub of parties, premieres, and seriously excellent outfits. From magic whipped up by couture fashion houses to low-key but ultra-elevated daytime looks, Cannes is a proverbial feast of fashion.

I didn't realise quite how much I had missed the high-octane glamour of the red carpet until last night's Cannes Film Festival arrivals. Bella Hadid wowed the masked crowd in her Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture look: a stunning monochrome gown that was absolute perfection from its tulle halterneck right down to its fringed tail. It was a real wow moment yet so refined and restrained, too. You can see it from every angle below. 

Not only did the supermodel bring her A game, but a lineup of actresses clearly enjoyed this opportunity to dress up once more. Jessica Chastain looked like a gothic beauty in black chiffon, Helen Mirren a vision in canary yellow (and she wasn't the only star to choose this striking shade), Maggie Gyllenhaal as understatedly glam as always in a series of chic Celine looks, while Marion Cotillard challenged us all to get into the idea of cycling shorts with booties. It's 2021, and anything can happen!

At the Cannes Film Festival, the stars of each film have two major press moments to attend: the red carpet in the evening and the photocalls in the hours beforehand. The red carpet fashion is always about OTT glamour, with diamonds so big they are like actual rocks and impactful gowns with dramatic trains or layers of tulle. It's all about aerial photographs on this red carpet, so stars tend to really play with proportions in Cannes. However, we do get to see some outfits we could actually re-create at the photo-calls too. We are only a few days into this year's festival, but there have already been a handful of outfits we'd like to buy into.

Selena Gomez opted for a very French outfit, wearing a navy knitted trouser set with vintage gold buttons by Chanel and strappy gold sandals. Chloë Sevigny has looked as cool as ever, wearing a white lace dress by Loewe and an amazing striped shorts suit. And Elle Fanning wore the most beautiful pink trouser suit by Sandro. The Cannes Film Festival is always the most glamorous fortnight of the year, as it sees all of the powerhouses in Hollywood unite on the French Riviera for premiere after premiere after premiere (with a yacht party thrown in in-between). We're now deep into the festival, and as expected, couture houses have created some of the most spectacular gowns for this historic red carpet.

This year, Elle Fanning is one of the jurors at the festival, meaning she has to attend all of the premieres on the schedule. She's one of those stars who always embraces the fun of the red carpet with her long-standing relationship with power stylist Samantha McMillen. For her first premiere on the schedule, Fanning wore a blush gown by Gucci with a dramatic cape and a purple floral embellishment at the waist.

For the premiere of Les Miserables, she wore a Valentino Haute Couture pink floral gown with delicate daisies in her hair, looking just like a fairytale princess. However, her best look to date has to be the magical custom Dior look created with Maria Grazia Chiuri, which reimagined the New Look with a black tulle skirt, a white beautiful blouse and a black wide-brimmed hat. 

Another person who has caught our eye, in particular, is Bollywood star Deepika Padukone. If you don't recognise her name, that's probably because she's not huge in Hollywood, but she is one of the highest-paid actresses in India. While we've only seen two of her knockout looks so far, we're already hoping for plenty more.

So far, we've seen her in the most incredible frothy lime-green Giambattista Valli gown, which she paired with a satin pink headscarf by Emily London. Before this, she wore a completely different but equally as amazing black-and-white dress by Peter Dundas. The '80s-style puffed-up white gown with a huge black bow was Lady Gaga–levels attention-grabbing.

Need a distraction from your 9-to-5? Or rather, another distraction after all the red carpet glory of the recent Met Gala in New York? Of course you do. Allow us to turn your attention to the illustrious Cannes Film Festival in the south coast of France, where dramatic dresses and couture gowns provide plenty of eye candy.

Stalwarts of the festival have so far stuck to personal dress codes. Julianne Moore stepped out in yet another red dress—this time a hand-embroidered caped column gown by Givenchy Haute Couture that was finished with feathers. (Last year she wore another crimson feather-trimmed gown also made by Givenchy Couture.) Cate Blanchett—chair of this year's jury—recycled a Georgio Armani Privé black lace gown she first wore to the Golden Globes in 2014, where she won the Best Performance in a Moving Picture award for her role in Blue Jasmine.

Penelope Cruz has up to now stuck to classic black, wearing an array of black dresses that include a fishtail-backed midi that she accessorised with Atelier Swarovski jewels, and a dramatic lace number with frothy tulle detailing.

Meanwhile, Fan Bingbing has worn pouffy dresses fit for a princess, including a nude pink couture Ralph & Russo gown that was covered in a delicate layer of sparkle.

The Cannes Film Festival is now in full swing, meaning for the next two weeks, the arrivals hall at the Nice Côte d'Azur International Airport will be flooded with the biggest names in Hollywood. The red carpet is considered the most glamorous in the world, but unless you frequently attend galas on yachts, you won't be able to take any practical style tips from the sea of couture gowns.

However, the style parade arriving at the Nice airport is a different story. In fact, the place has turned into its own red carpet of sorts, as a pack of photographers are there for every incoming flight and A-listers are planning their Cannes arrival outfits as if it was a photocall, but this is actually where the likes of Bella Hadid, Jessica Chastain and Julianne Moore wear looks we can all copy. But like any sort of stylish get-together, there will be a few who want to surprise. Case in point for 2018? Well, when you scroll down to see Kendall Jenner's sheer, taupe-coloured leggings and matching backless top styled with her snakeskin boots, you'll know what we mean. On the flipside, one glance at Kristen Stewart's biker jacket, white tee and slouchy jeans combination and you'll feel more than happy wearing your usual comfy get-up next time you touch down at Heathrow. We are now (very impatiently) counting down the hours until the annual glam-fest, otherwise known as the Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 17.

As ever, we will see a number of Hollywood names jet/speedboat into the French Riviera for the two-week event, so while we eagerly anticipate what gowns the likes of Kirsten Dunst an Elle Fanning wear this year, we’re presenting 33 of the most glamorous vintage Cannes moments of all time, because, well, they're just too darn gorgeous to miss.
