I’ve paired it with my tailored wide-leg Arket trousers (my exact pair are now out of stock but the H&M pair below look so similar), the mini crescent Proenza in the same colour way, my black Margiela Tabi boots, and cat-eye Saint Laurent sunglasses. Style Notes: I wear a lot of black. In fact, I would say 75% of my wardrobe consists of black items. So I like to go for pieces that have interesting fabrics, cuts or silhouettes. When it comes to predicting the first major trends of a forthcoming year, it's important to consider a number of factors and look at the runways and social media as well as celebrities. I don't know about you, but these past few weeks of early spring have created an outerwear conundrum that's left me questioning my entire jacket collection on the daily. Between a furnace-like tube journey, a mild lunchtime walk and a chilly evening commute, finding a jacket or coat that can keep me comfortable from morning until evening is proving no mean feat.

Eager to land on a styling solution that will keep me warm and looking stylish this season, I was elated to find my answer during a quick Instagram scroll. Naturally, it was Alexa Chung who spoke to my transseasonal outerwear needs. Wearing an oversized khaki bomber jacket on two occasions over the weekend, I knew from first sight that this was the answer I had been looking for.

Reaching for the same bomber twice in 48 hours, the model and presenter created two relaxed outfits peppered with smart details. Juxtaposing the casual nature of the bomber, Chung chose to layer a polished pinstriped blazer underneath, allowing the corner to peek out from under the bomber's lapels.

This clever styling trick added extra insulation for the chilly weekend and showcased her ability to create tension and personality in an outfit. Working with the smart nature of the blazer, Chung chose a pair of neat penny loafers to ground her look. On a separate occasion, Chung let the oversized bomber do the talking, styling it only with a warm black knit (and I suspect some jeans, although we couldn't see her bottom half in the pic).

Bombers and denim are a styling combination I'll never grow tired of, but the aviation-inspired jacket hosts much more styling potential than you might have imagined. Adding a cool and casual element to any outfit it touches, I love to wear my light cotton dresses with a hardy bomber jacket come late spring. It's equally elevated when paired with a leather skirt or trousers, and right at home with a classic leggings and trainers ensemble, proving that the bomber jacket is truly a springtime saviour that will work hard in so many outfits.

This season, we’ve spotted a number of new jacket trends flourish with the support of celebrities and the style set. It’s very clear that leather trench coats are the longline style of choice, and that bouclé jackets have enjoyed a renaissance yet again for the new season. Next Up, The Autumn/Winter 2023 Fashion Trends That Really Matter

I recently found myself rewatching the documentary The September Issue for the hundredth time—you know, the one which follows American Vogue staffers (specifically Anna Wintour) and offers a glimpse into what that "glamorous” world looked like back in 2007. As you’d expect, there are many memorable quotes, but one that stuck out to me on my latest viewing was an editor’s exclamation that "the jacket is the new coat”. Working in fashion myself for the last decade, I like to think I can take the industry with a pinch of salt and appreciate the absurdity of sweeping statements like this—declaring one thing "in” and another "out”. But it did get me thinking about how cyclical fashion is, and how jackets and all the exciting jacket trends for autumn 2023 are taking up an awful lot of my brain space right now. More so than, say… coats.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very into outerwear, so if anyone can appreciate a good coat, it’s me. But I do think coats are more likely to be classic, timeless pieces you invest in and pull out year after year—a camel Max Mara belted number, a perfect beige trench, or a tailored, black wool style, for example. Jackets on the other hand, are there to have a little fun with, and whilst every purchase should be a thoughtful one that fits with your personal style and budget, it feels like there’s more room to play around with texture, shape and style within the realm of jackets.

Bouclé jackets have been on the rise again for a few seasons now, with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Of course, Chanel led the charge at the autumn/winter shows with iterations of its famous buttoned-up styles, but this is one trend the high street is also leaning into massively for autumn 2023—all the better for our bank accounts.

Super-Soft Wool 

There's something luxurious about wrapping yourself up in swathes of wool when autumn comes around, so the rising trend for wool jackets (especially super-soft, double-faced styles) should come as no real surprise. The slouchier and more minimal, the fresher they look for 2023—think scarf detailing, belts and shawl collars, all in an expensive colour palette of camels, chocolate browns, creams and greys.

The Elevated Bomber

Bomber jackets never really go "out" of style, which is why I'm such a fan. However, despite being linked with more casual streetwear for the last few years, for 2023 they're looking a lot more elevated—and nothing feels more now than a leather version, thanks to Saint Laurent and Miu Miu sending sleek styles down their runways, and of course, the cult Acne Studios version that screams cool girl.

Touchy-Feely

Last year, we saw shearling take off as an outerwear trend in a big way, not least because of Toteme's dreamy toggle jacket (as seen on Jessica Skye above), which we're predicting will be just as in-demand this season, too (we've spied some pretty epic high-street versions in the works as well). For 2023 though, anything fuffy, textured or tactile will do the trick—from cosy bouclé to soft suede and fleecy teddy jackets.

Totally Waisted

After many seasons of the oversized, "mannish" blazer hogging the limelight (which is still very much at play, don't worry), there's a new, more "feminine" blazer shape joining it at the top of the jacket charts. The waisted, hourglass or fitted blazer featured in so many of this season's chicest designer collections—most notably at Versace (Gigi Hadid kicked off the show in this femme-fatale, all-black number above), and in bold colour at Jason Wu. Luckily, this supremely stylish yet easy to wear shape is already trickling down to more affordable brands, but if you're looking for a way to get the look without buying anything new, simply add a waist belt to your existing styles, et voila.

Next Up: The Autumn/Winter 2023 Fashion Trends That Really Matter

As we round the corner towards the final stretch of summer, I've been digging though my wardrobe in search of those hero transitional items to tide me over until the seasons change.

I'm already wearing jeans on the regular and have am partial to layering an oversized shirt on top of a tank top, but as we creep towards September I'm looking for something a little hardier in the outwear department.

In my eyes, the perfect casual summer jacket is lightweight enough to carry in your bag or over your shoulders during the midday sun, but warm enough to keep you cosy when day turns to night.

There are a few styles I call upon to do the job. A lightweight trench makes for ideal outerwear either side of the peak of summer, and a trusty denim jacket looks equally great paired with denim shorts as it does a maxi dress. Luckily, you don't have to look far to find an option to suit your taste and budget. Up and down the high street as well as across luxury brands, retailers have perfected their offerings.

If there's one thing I love about my role as Who What Wear UK's shopping editor, it's predicting what I think will be the next big best seller, and it's even more exciting when it's an affordable high-street find.

As such, I spend great deal of time scouring through the new-in sections of your favourite shops (partly to save you the time and energy), and often I'll come across a buzzy new find or a hidden restock that deserves your immediate attention. This week, Marks and Spencer's extensive new-in section has been full of hidden treasures that I know you're going to love, and one piece in particular has been trending on socials, too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again—in fashion, what goes around always comes back around. No exceptions. Maybe eight years ago, bomber jackets blasted their way onto the style scene when Gucci's dragon-embroidered silk styles became the first in a very long line of cult buys that would follow for the brand. Cue a slew of high-street homages, the most notable coming from Topshop, which proceeded to go big on bomber jackets for the year that followed. I did not buy the Gucci dupe, but I did, however, invest in a burgundy bouclé style Topshop would release a few months later. Edged with leather and boasting a relaxed silhouette, it became my throw-on outerwear of choice for the best part of three years. Then, trends shifted and bomber jackets were replaced by the likes of leather blazers, tweed crops, and the such like. 

Fast-forward a couple of years and I decided it was time to re-home my unworn bomber jacket. Someone bought it on eBay and, I'll be quite honest, I haven't thought about it much since. That was until last September when, just looking at the spring/summer 2023 runways, it became very clear that bomber jackets, just like the one I'd sold, were back at the fore. Slouchy styles dominated designer collections, with everyone from Prada to Loewe showing their appreciation for the cover-up. Recently the high street has been tackling the trend, too. However, of all the brands currently stocking up on bomber jackets, no one is doing them quite like Zara. 

Over the past few weeks, Zara's bomber jackets—specifically its woollen style in grey and cream—have been following me across the length and breadth of the Internet. TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp groups, everyone is talking about them. Although the initial trending styles have sold out, they are apparently coming back very soon (watch this space). However, upon scanning its new-in section, I noticed that Zara has just dropped a fresh batch of bomber jackets which, if they follow the pattern of their predecessors, will sell out fast.

I remember the last time bomber jackets were on the first page of the style agenda. It was 2013, Gucci had just made a momentous comeback, and its silky, embroidered-back bomber jacket was a hot-ticket item. Everyone wanted to own one, but few managed to get their hands on one. So cue a slew of more affordable homages. Topshop's best-selling take was even worn by Olivia Palermo, fashion's darling at the time.

In the years since, however, bomber jackets, although they never went out of style altogether, were kind of forgotten about. I think it would look great over a dress (especially a white one), and it even brings my leather trousers straight into spring. Although I’m usually a size 8 or 10 at M&S, I sized up to get that more modern, slightly looser look.

2. The Perfect Leather Biker

It’s so hard to find the perfect leather biker jacket, but honestly, I think this might be it. Made from real, buttery-soft leather, it will only get better with age. There’s no fuss—just a few classic zips. It would make simple blue jeans and a Breton look like a really chic outfit. I think I would size up once or twice because I prefer a slightly oversized look, and it fits quite small, but that comes down to your personal preference.

Bombers are back, and they’ll be a huge trend this season and the next. (Although it’s not like they really ever went away.) This streamlined khaki version is just enough of a nod to the trend but is still very classic. Quilted liner jackets are still so popular, and for a good reason. They make the perfect light layer for this time of year. (I have one that I haven’t taken off since February.) This lilac jacket is such a lovely spring version that will uplift all your outfits.
