Indeed, peasant tops are once again trending, offering a soft sensuality that feels completely fitting for the sun-drenched days that stretch ahead of us.

For the uninitiated, peasant tops refer to a style of blouse that features a slightly puffed cap sleeve, an elongated shape that billows down the body and intricate details like broderie anglaise eyelets, lace trims, whimsical ruffles or quaint pleats that give the top a hand-made, almost archival quality.

Just look at the lines that stretch through Portobello Markets on any given Saturday when the sky is a picturesque blue, or the fanfare surrounding archival boutiques like Rellik or Turner Vintage, which specialise in rare, almost antique pieces from the past century, as proof of our collective appetite for pieces that are intricate, thoughtful and effortlessly elegant

Of course, for adherents of the bohemian aesthetic, you’ll know that peasant blouses aren’t new by any means. First garnering popularity through the 20th Century, they first came to prominence in the ‘40s with Henri Mattise depicting several styles in his work before becoming a fixture in the balmy wardrobes of the European jet set like Jane Birkin in the ‘60s before finally showing up on the runway in Saint Laurent’s landmark “Haute Russian" collection in the ‘70s.

These days, you’re bound to find a peasant top within the work of designers who derive the most inspiration from these eras, from Chemena Kamali’s free-spirited and intrepidly feminine pieces for Chloé or Margaret and Katherine Kleveland’s work for their beloved brand Dôen, which the pair describe as holding a “reverence for coastal California of decades past".

However, when it comes to how they’re styled, not much has really changed. Allowing the fluidity and ease of the style to really shine, most wearers pair their peasant tops with sturdy denim bottoms, particularly light washes in straight-leg cuts. Emulating the spirit of the La Piscine star, they’re commonly complemented with her trademark basket bag, too.

Still, in a season defined by lightness and a renewal, there’s nothing more appealing than embracing a trend that allows a more delicate and tender side to show. In the words of Charli XCX—which were immortalised on her magnum opus party album brat and subsequent use in Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of the literary classic Wuthering Heights—everything is romantic.

It's no secret that fashion is obsessed with the past. Each season, almost every collection is influenced by a previous era, movement or subculture. In recent years, the nostalgic fixation has mainly been with Y2K. What started as something quite divisive—an era said not to flatter anyone, obsessed with "ugly" shoes, garish colours and questionable denim—at first it seemed a miracle that it was coming back, and yet now most of us are wearing styles inspired (or actually from) that era. Let's not forget also the more recent obsession with '90s minimalism, catalysed by Love Story, the glossy TV show that has made Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her signature understated style the answer to the end of quiet luxury.

Adding to this, back in January online discourse was all about the year 2016, with everyone's 'avo on toast' era content, as well as their outfits, going more viral than it did first time around. We've also witnessed the comeback of Indie Sleaze. First 'a thing' around 2006 and lasting until the early 2010s, it was the era of skinny jeans, American Apparel, 'Nu-Rave', Alexa Chung and the period Kate Moss was never seen without her Napoleon jacket or her rockstar boyfriend, Pete Doherty.

Also around this era, in fact just before, was the prime time for boho-chic. A trend influenced by the '70s, it was pioneered in the early 2000s by It girls like Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins with long tousled blonde hair, wearing gladiator sandals and folky cotton tops with bleach-wash denim shorts. In 2025-26, boho has enjoyed a return, particularly down to Chemena Kamali, the creative director of Chloe, who is dedicated to taking the brand back to its original French Girl free-spirited DNA, one ruffled sheer blouse and clog at a time.

The point being, that in the last few seasons—months, really—we've experienced the return of multiple trends influenced by just the last few decades alone. Don't even get me started on the lore of the spring/summer 2026 runway trends and how they were inspired by '80s maximalism, '60s housewives as well as '50s lady-like sense of dress.

But having researched the spring/summer 2026 and autumn/winter 2026 runways at length lately, I've come to realise that fashion is seeking inspiration from eras much, much longer ago than the '90s. From Rococo-inspired florals at Max Mara and Simone Rocha, to Napoleon jackets, pirate boots and tricorn hats that ooze Baroque-cool, designers are harking back way beyond 1950. Whilst Chanel and Rabanne showcased a series of drop-waists that fundamentally felt quite 1920s flapper girl, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Keburia and Ann Demeulemeester alluded to pre 18th century periods and cultural movements.

Here, I've researched all the runways have the offer, and have collated the 5 periods pre-1950 I think they've been most inspired by.

5 Nostalgia Fashion Trends to Know In Spring 2026

1. Roaring Twenties

Style Notes: For Chanel and Rabanne's A/W26 collections, drop waists were a key focus. Wide shift dresses with thick vest-like silhouettes were an integral detail to each collection, which are a clear nod to the 1920's flapper girl style. But it wasn't just silhouettes but general 'more is more' details. Beaded fringe! Frothy brooches! Sequinned pouch bags! Opera gloves! Even Chanel had the classic T-bar court shoes. This sense of joy, colour and exuberance feels much like the prohibition 'Roaring Twenties' era, so make Daisy Buchanan your new style muse.

2. Rococo Romance

Style Notes: The Rococo era occurred in mid-late 18th century France. Stylistically similar but almost a result of the Baroque period, Rococo was known for its pastel hues, ruffled details, ribbons and frothy textures. The most famous depiction of this period must be Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette, which wonderfully depicted the essence and beauty of the period. Dior's AW/26 collection gave this same sense of hyper-femininity, offering tiers and tiers of tulle frothy short skirts, with pastel feather prints as well as feather hemlines. It was the same at coquette-girl favourite, Simone Rocha, with pastels, sheer floral fabrics and embroidered floral motifs for S/S26. Even the designer's collaboration with adidas in her latter AW/26 collection, she presented a white bowler bag with bow motifs stitched on the front. And you just know if Marie Antoinette was a Parisian Gen-Z influencer today, she would 100% have that bag.

3. Gothic Victorian

Style Notes: Gothic Victorian influences have been bubbling up for some seasons. Not just in fashion but in TV and film we've seen countless depictions of the mid-late 19th century recently. Nosferatu, Frankenstein and, of course, Wuthering Heights have been the topic of much conversation within the zeitgeist, and as such, Victorian fashion has been everywhere. I've already talked at length about witchy boots, which looking at Prada AW/26, will be going nowhere next season. Adding to the 'lace-up' detail; corsetry is having a moment. Dilara Findikoglu has long pioneered the Victorian aesthetic, including corsetry and bodices, but her S/S26 show was particularly dark and macabre. Other depictions occurred at Yuhan Wang, Bora Aksu and Chloe, with high necklines, lace and broderie anglaise.

4. Baroque

Style Notes: After S/S26 fashion month, it felt like a sure bet piratecore was on the agenda for 2026. Dior's tricorn hats and capes, Ann Demeulemeester pirate boots and Napoleon jackets at Keburia, Alexander McQueen and Sinead Gorey all echoed inspirations from the Golden Age of Piracy, which occurred in Europe around 1650-the early 1700s. These maritime and Baroque influences are rooted in elegant grandeur—think dark velvets coats and vests, heavily embellished with golden frogging and epaulettes that are unmistakably military-coded. Whilst some depictions of this for SS/26 and A/W26 feel almost ironic (see Keburia and Sinead Gorey), nobody can deny how much these design codes influenced the '80s New Romantic movement and peak Indie Sleaze era, which a real cornerstones of British fashion. Just think—what would Carl Barât and Pete Doherty have been without their Napoleon jackets and eyeliner?

5. Renaissance Revival

Style Notes: Whilst the renaissance period is a far greater stretch of history, spanning loosely from the 14th-17th century, beginning in Italy and then making its way across Europe, it was one of (if not the) the most monumental cultural movements in history. Seeing the progression of art, philosophy, literature and science, it also bled into fashion, progressing the more practical, draped and modest styles of the Middle Ages to something more ornate and fanciful. In Britain, the Elizabethan and Tudor periods were at the core of this, and we can draw connections from the opulence of fashion of then to now. Ruffle neck collars, voluminous 'puff ball' skirts and shorts worn with tights, highly embroidered and brocaded expensive fabrics like velvet and silk were seen not just in Shakespearean times, but also at Keburia, McQueen, Khaite and Mithridate this season.

Whilst there were once strict parameters surrounding what could be described as la bohème—quite artistic, often Parisian and certainly consciously uncoupled from society's conventions—today’s sartorial landscape has enabled anyone wearing a pair of fringed boots or suede bag to invest in the bohemian fashion trend.

Indeed, the beauty of the boho chic aesthetic lies in the vintage quality inherent to it, with staples like frilly linens and hobo bags almost ageless in the sense they could be dated to a number of decades. The wooden clogs and leather capes worn by the likes of Sienna Miller could easily be from the 1970s or the 17th-century, but are most likely from Chemena Kamali’s recent collections for Chloé. The floaty tiered dress styled by Daisy Edgar-Jones might look like something she’s fished out of an archival boutique along Portobello Road, but it is actually from Saint Laurent’s recent Resort ‘25 collection.

Part of the appeal of the bohemian fashion trend lies in its laissez-faire and care-free attitude. It conjures images of Doechii walking barefoot through the streets of the 16th arrondissement or Florence & The Machine’s whimsical performance style with her wild tresses and layers of lace. This calming and ethereal essence innate to the style is certainly why so many designers have mined it, with brands like Zimmermann, Isabel Marant and Doên making this laid-back sensibility a cornerstone of their brand identities.

However, in 2026, the bohemian fashion trend is evolving. Buying into it can be as simple as throwing on a frilly dress, digitally detoxing and escaping to Ibiza. However, those more attuned to movements of the sartorial zeitgeist are cognisant of the different ways it’s being expressed. Now, boho chic is being swept up in the sort of well-heeled sophistication that’s commanding both the runways and street style set.

The ‘60s are still a core point of reference, but rather than it being rooted in the dress sense of Woodstock attendees or Haight-Ashbury locals, it’s taking inspiration from the gamine wardrobes of Beatniks like Jean Seberg and ladies who lunch like Lee Radizwell. It’s still counterculture, but with a bit more class.

After two weeks of uniting fashion enthusiasts and sports fanatics, the 2025 Wimbledon tennis championship has come to an end. Demanding smart-casual attire, Wimbledon goers showcased a number of different looks that perfectly exude easy summer elegance, however, unlike previous years, I noticed that the best-dressed attendees did not rely heavily on fleeting trends. Instead, they focused on incorporating their everyday personal style into the more traditional Wimbledon attire. And one stylish celebrity who absolutely nailed this is Sienna Miller.

Spotted yesterday in a Ralph Lauren crochet crop top, white tiered midi skirt and coin belt, the actress proved once again that she can dress up for an occasion while staying true to her boho chic aesthetic. You might initially think that this outfit combo is too free-flowing for the more formal apparel expected at Wimbledon, but the actress used one key styling trick to keep to the dress etiquette—swapping out boho-inspired gladiator sandals for a pair of strappy heels.

Although this outfit would have worked just as well with a pair of flat sandals for a more casual event like a festival, the strappy heels helped to elongate the silhouette of the top and skirt pairing, adding a touch of elegance to an otherwise laid-back outfit.

I'll admit, on a normal day, heels are not typically my first choice of footwear, however, their ability to dress up any and every outfit is undeniable. And the best part? Even the lowest of heels will do the trick, meaning you can follow Sienna's outfit formula without compromising on comfort.

For a long time, it seemed that micro trends appeared to be the solution to bring a fresh take to a summer capsule wardrobe, with the odd pair of holiday shorts or linen trousers zhuzhed up with a polka dot top or bandana print. (Yes, two of the year's defining summer styles.) My, how times have changed.

Now, fashion people relish the task of putting a summer outfit together from scratch, calling upon white skirts, capri pants and a host of other bottoms to help vary their looks across the season. With this comes the need for a top, too, and I've found the style that they can't seem to get enough of at the moment: enter the pintuck top.

Of course, there has been no shortage of contenders vying for the proverbial 2025 top-trend crown. There’s the reign of broderie anglaise, an elegant style featuring small eyelet details and botanical-inspired cutouts, the prevalence of ruffled-fronts and by any means, no shortage of lace tops that delicately cover the torso.

Looking at the recent runways, you’ll also spot an abundance of silk camisoles, like the ones designed by Chemana Kamali for Chloé’s autumn/winter 2025 collection presented in February, or the sumptuous frills adorning the vampy satin gowns seen on Zimmermann’s catwalk. While these are indeed cardinal motifs for a whimsical sense of dress, I’d contend that pintuck tops have usurped them all in 2025.

But what exactly is a pintuck top? Pintucking is a design element that describes the process of folding fabric into neat ornamental rows. Consider it like pleating, but with the crease sewn down to create a dimensional appliqué. When applied to balmy blouses, the results are endless.

On little ethereal camisoles, pintucking appears through the front of the bodice to evoke a sense of provincial ease and elevate what is really a quite simple fit. Sleeveless shirts are improved with tucking through the mid-length, bringing an inherently sculpted feel to wardrobe fundamentals.

It’s easy to see why this type of top has become so popular this season. After a period of niche aesthetics, there’s been a collective return to simplicity and refinement. Consider it a sort of fashion factory reset, with style insiders focusing on well-crafted garments that prioritise timeless cuts and colours. Pintuck tops take the fundamentals of a curated capsule and improve upon classics, bridging together the ease of a white T-shirt with the flair of the soft, billowing silhouettes that feel so current now. When I think of Sienna Miller, my mind instantly drifts to the boho era she defined in the mid-2000s—a time of flowing skirts, spaghetti-straps, tousled hair and casually—yet perfectly—draped low-slung belts. Gen Z and millennials get pitted against each other a lot, but I—someone who falls into the former camp—think that trope is a little tired.

When it comes to fashion, we might approach things a little differently, but what I find more interesting is how many trends and looks crossover between the generations. Boho is definitely one of them.

Since then, we’ve seen countless boho-inspired brands embrace the look, from Dôen to Free People and Gimuguas, making it more widespread than ever before. So, how is this playing out where boho outfits are concerned?

Today, we're seeing boho blend with other trends to create something more unique and personal to the wearer. Think denim on denim spliced with waterfalls of lace, maximalist tiered hems adding volume to minimalist staples and period drama-esque loose bloomers adding a floaty feel to a poplin tee.

At this point in my career as a fashion journalist, I've learnt that there are only a few constants in the industry, and Sienna Miller being a Chloé girl through and through is definitely one of them. Whilst September's near arrival normally calls for a stock up on button downs and trousers, this season I'll be diving head first into a trend that might be the antithesis of structured style. Besotted by the drama and frills, this season the ruffle dress trend is coming for my wardrobe, and yours, too.

Closing in around me, the ruffle dresses are dominating where slip dresses used to rule. Having appeared across high street and designer collections alike, been spotted on so many influencers, and currently being worn by my favourite celebrities, it was only a matter of time until the trending garment made its way into my basket.

Ushered in my Chloé's autumn/winter 2024 runway collection—the ruffle trend has subsequently trickled into wardrobes everywhere this season. An instant celebrity favourite, I've spotted Sienna Miller style ruffle dresses from Chloé's collection on several occasions, and I also spotted Suki Waterhouse style their frilly maxi dress as she opened for Taylor Swift on the star's Eras Tour this past weekend.

Whilst some have gone big with the trend, others have taken a more minimalistic approach, styling slinky dresses adorned with small ruffle detailing instead.

Sorry to my tanks and tees, but there's a new top trend that's on the up right now that's, quite frankly, so much more interesting. Now appearing across a range of other designer and high-street brands, I've seen a number of my favourite stores offer up their take on the boho blouse this season. Naturally, Chloé is your first point of call if you're interested in shopping the origin of the trend, but if you're looking for a high-street take, Free People, Anthropologie and H&M all host beautiful styles.

Even though we are currently in the full swing of summer, with people still sporting jelly sandals and lightweight dresses, I recently came across photos of Zoë Kravitz and Hailey Bieber flaunting the '70s bag trend that's expected to dominate this autumn.

Last week, Kravitz was seen in Los Angeles carrying Saint Laurent's leopard-print boho shoulder bag, breathing new life into a style that some may consider "outdated." She effortlessly paired it with a white T-shirt, chic blazer, and baggy jeans, adding a black baseball cap and black loafers to finish the simple yet undeniably elegant ensemble.

Meanwhile, that same week in another part of town, Bieber also embraced the slouchy bag trend. She accessorized with the same printed Saint Laurent Le 5 À 7 bag, styling it alongside a leather jacket, black flare leggings, and pointed kitten heels to attend church with her husband, Justin Bieber.

It's evident that the classic, autumn-ready bag style is making a powerful comeback and is anticipated to be one of, if not *the* most significant handbag trend for fall 2024. And it's not just Bieber and Kravitz who are leading the charge. The resurgence of the bohemian aesthetic was unmistakable at Chloe's F/W 24 fashion show, featuring sheer blouses, ruffled dresses, suede clogs, oversized eyeglasses, and corduroy boot-cut jeans. This became one of the most talked-about shows of the season, not only because of the debut of the new creative director, Chemena Kamali, but also because it reminded us that the '70s boho aesthetic effortlessly exuded a carefree, cool-girl look that everyone sought to emulate—and still does.

Just when I thought H&M couldn't get any better, the Swedish fashion brand released a £35 version of the autumn runway trend that I can't seem to get out of my head. Mostly thanks to Chemena Kamali's debut collection for Chloé (which successfully managed to do what so many designers have tried and failed to do in revitalising and refreshing the boho trend), flouncy, ruffled, chiffon dresses have dominated the fashion scene as of late. Not only was the runway show a viral success, but Kamali's dresses continued to make headlines at the Met Gala when Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldaña, Greta Gerwig, and Emma Mackey all showed up in catwalk styles from the A/W 2024 collection. Finally, there was Daisy Edgar-Jones's Twisters press tour, which featured several bohemian Kamali originals, all of which the public ate right up. Clearly, the divisive aesthetic is back, and if you don't have thousands of dollars to invest in it, H&M is ready and willing to help.

This week, H&M released a handful of Woodstock-ready dresses, with one particularly buy-worthy style costing just £35 despite how pricey it looks. The dress, called the Flounced Chiffon Dress, comes in two colours (caramel and blue) and is completely sheer with long sleeves, a mid-calf hemline, and ties at the neck that you can either leave open or tie in a bow. The brand also released one more slightly dressier option in terracotta if that colour is more your style.

Recently, Daisy Edgar-Jones has been collecting fashion accolades on every outing. Having seemingly revamped her wardrobe, the British actor is on a winning style streak, stepping out in chic silhouette after chic silhouette and tapping into some rising trends in the process.

Curating a wardrobe of enviable items, the actor's aesthetic is simmering between poised and polished—and downright bohemian. Unlike other boho looks, however, she somehow manages to ensure an elegant undercurrent to each one, and her latest dress outfits are a prime example. It's easy to understand why French heritage brand Chloé has been working so closely with Sienna Miller in recent months. Embodying the boho aesthetic that the brand has honed so well, Miller's relaxed styling choices, tousled waves and a wardrobe full of retro staples make the style icon a natural fit as a close friend of the brand. Assembling a boho-inspired outfit that comprised pretty wardrobe staples and rising new-season trends, Miller's look perfectly captured her understated yet elegant energy. The year is 2004. We’re avidly searching for pictures of Sienna Miller’s Glastonbury outfits while Laguna Beach plays in the background. Had our phones been up to date enough we might have been scouring Vinted for secondhand disc belts and fur gilets, but instead we make do with tank tops, maxi skirts and Topshop boleros. No matter whether you flirted with Indie Sleaze or hip-hop's glamorous excess, the one trend that occupied our minds rent free in the early noughties was bohomania. A heady concoction of frills, suede, denim and chiffon as championed by devoted followers of Rachel Zoe but conceptualised by French fashion house Chloé. Flash forward 20 years and when scrolling through socials to find standout moments from Paris fashion week, the first picture to grab and hold my attention was a shot from the front row of the Chloé autumn/winter 2024 show. A queue of identical platform wedges and handkerchief hemlines instantly transported me back to my early teens, and unlike the return of the pedal pusher, my initial reaction wasn't dread but instead, comforting nostalgia. The widespread reception to this return to "boho chic"? An overwhelming yes. Boho dressing is officially back on the agenda, and the fashion crowd are here for it.

After Gabriela Hearst's departure as creative director of Chloé last year, a lot was to be expected of successor Chemena Kamali, having previously worked under the Phoebe Philo tenure at Chloé that gave us such genre defining pieces as the Paddington bag and the skinny scarf. All doubts were put to bed however from the moment that billowing tops tucked into jeans, and chiffon dresses with leather jackets drifted down the runway, accessorised with bug-eyed sunnies, studded flats and wooden clogs. But as quick as social media was to declare that Kamali had singlehandedly made boho cool again, the signs were already there that free-spirited fashion was due to make a stylish comeback.

Take a cursory glance through the S/S '23 shows of Altuzarra, Celine, and Isabel Marant and you'll find the same embroidered waistcoats, tie-dyed kaftans, peasant blouses, and denim cut-offs that dominated the 2010s, and for S/S '24, there's no mistaking the familiarity of Ermanno Scervino's umber suede paired with turquoise jewellery and Ralph Lauren's fringed cape and spaghetti-strapped tank. In short, if you can imagine Nicole Ritchie wearing it with oversized sunglasses and a bag big enough for her to live inside, it's surprisingly back "on-trend".

So how do we re-adopt such a throwback trend and make it feel relevant for 2024? Well, by leaning into the kitsch factor and embracing the nostalgia, billowing sleeves and all. As Gen-Z repurpose cargo pants, bandeau tops, and Y2K-coded accessories, here is an alternative for those who were left cold by platform trainers and baby tees. Something just feels inherently more "grown-up" about wooden wedges and ruffled blouses, or at least it does for Team Who What Wear. Conducting a quick straw poll in the office reveals an overwhelming desire to get back to the "lovely, and floaty, and comfy" as copy editor Georgia Seago puts it.

And while we haven't thought about Vanesssa Hudgens kaftan collection for the last 15 years, there is still a lot to learn from bohemian icons Zoe Kravitz, Kate Moss and the Olsen twins, who still top of our moodboards as examples of how to channel "free-sprited" fashion in the post-paisley print era. This time around we might not be rushing to fill our wardrobes with feather earrings and floppy sunhats quite yet, but there's a still lot to love about the newer, elevated approach to laidback luxe, with a slightly more restrained approach to 70s inspired styling. There are less prints, a stricter colour palette that favours earthy neutrals, and no need for problematic cultural references like headdresses and bindis. Strip away the layers of over-accessoring and embellisment and underneath you'll find this season's hero buys: oversized blouses, light maxi skirts, high-waisted jeans, billowing, high-necked maxi dresses and plenty of premium suede and leather. So, after the last two years of minimalism and quiet luxury, we're looking forward to a summer spent leisurely unbuttoned and anything but straight-laced.

As one of the first stars to wear the leading Chloé collection on the streets, Sydney Sweeney has already set the tone ahead of autumn in her cropped trench-style cape, floaty chiffon mini and thigh-high leather boots. It's all about this mix of hard and soft that makes boho 2.0 feel more current than its hippier predecessors. We expect to see many more celebrities taking cues from the runway's boho shift as we head into the new season. In fact, we've already seen brands such as H&M investing heavily into the look with boho blouses and pitch-perfect ruffled dresses. Did you get the memo about embroidery? This season it's cooler to cross-stitch (or at least purchase someone else's handiwork) than to be the newest member in Gigi and Kendall's gang. Embroidery can be found across denim, handbags, knitwear, ankle boots... but our craftwork love-in first began over a year ago with the traditional Ukranian folk dresses of Vita Kin—a label which started out as an Instagram phenomenon picked up as special one-off orders by style insiders for their holidays and those hot days of September's fashion week schedule. Now the label is stocked at the likes of Net-A-Porter.com and MatchesFashion.com, but it would appear our appetite for genuinely folkloric lantern-sleeved dresses, kaftans and blouses to wear in a city is not yet sated.

Cue Yuliya Magdych: a newly signed brand in store at Selfridges and a fellow Ukranian who also just so happens to specialise in embroidery from the homeland. Already a firm favourite amongst the chic crowds of Ukraine, Yuliya's collection is primary made of linen dresses in both classic and crazy colourways, plus velvet gowns and cheeky rompers. You are definitely going to see this all over social media once the Greek island-hopping vacations start in the summer… Or if Olivia Palermo jets back to St Barts.
