There was a time when white trainers were practically the only shoes I wore. Running errands? White trainers. Heading to the office? White trainers. Trying to make a dress feel more relaxed? If there's one sign of growing up, it's our changing priorities when it comes to footwear. For weeks, if not months, I've been desperately searching for a pair of Birkenstock Boston clogs 1) in the colour way I want and 2) in my size, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one who is come up short. It's indisputable—flat shoes are having a moment right now and Birkenstock Bostons are arguably the most in-demand style of the season. Not even fashion people can resist the lure of a comfortable shoe, which might help explain the industry's spring footwear obsession: Birkenstock Boston clogs. Yes, you read that right—clogs, and from none other than the original "dad sandal" brand, which is known for its humble contoured summer shoes. Would you believe me if I said every fashion person I know either owns or is scrambling to find a pair of these slip-on shoes right now? Because it's true.

When you think about it, though, it makes sense. In recent years, fashion has revelled in reclaiming "ugly" items and making them covetable—think track-soled boots and fisherman sandals—and Birkenstocks have played a huge part in that. They may not be "glamorous," but over time, the brand's simple sandals have become capsule classics in the most stylish wardrobes. "We each grew up wearing Birkenstocks, and as we went off to college in the '90s, they felt like such an iconic part of our wardrobes, but we really see them as timeless. We have such respect for the integrity of a pair of Birkenstocks. Our brands have a shared attention to quality and detail, so it made a lot of sense to join forces and create something that feels authentic and lasting.

"When we launched our last collection, it was right at the beginning of lockdown. Truthfully, we were a bit worried. Everything seemed to be falling apart when we were launching this really exciting project, but in the end, it was the perfect timing," they explain. "All people wanted to wear were Birkenstocks around the house with a pair of comfy socks, on their quick trips to the grocery store or on daily walks. The perfect quarantine shoe! And now, even though we are re-entering the world and socializing, we still wanted to keep that casual sensibility, that low-to-the-ground, comfortable, slip-on-and-go shoe. There's no fuss to it. For us, personally, we want to be comfortable but also want to feel polished with a bit of an elevated edge. The idea that you don't have to choose between those two states has been our biggest source of inspiration while designing."

I was lucky enough to road-test the latest collection, including new colours and the classic monochrome varieties that have proven popular with Chung. I have always been a practical person when it comes to shoes. (Well, practical for a fashion editor anyway.) I tend to stick to styles that I don't have to think about. I can't stand those shoes that enjoy reminding you every five seconds of their existence by A) flying off your feet or B) rubbing your poor heels into oblivion. That is not to say I don't think about aesthetics, and so you can imagine my delight when the comfy hiking sandal was declared an object of fashion veneration in 2019.

Fast-forward 12 months, and we are all in a very different situation (to say the least). However, my penchant for practical shoes remains and has become somewhat useful in my new work setting. The average day includes mooching around the house, working on my laptop and sitting on the sofa, but I didn't want to be stuck in slippers 24/7. My solution? Birkenstocks. Yes, you've had a pair since you were 15, and they're not exactly a groundbreaking discovery, but all the same, let me inform any fellow Birkenstock virgins that I have literally not taken them off for the last four months. 

Clearly the rest of the world agrees because this month, Birkentocks were declared the "world's hottest shoes" by fashion data platform Lyst after searches for the sandals spiked 225% over the last quarter. The numbers don't lie. So, after much deliberation and research, I opted for the Arizona EVA iteration, which is slightly cheaper than the classic Arizona and made of the brand's signature EVA fabric, which looks like leather but feels like a softer form of flip-flop material (no need to wear them in, hurrah!). Socks and sandals aren't really one of those combos you can quietly dip your toe into. You're either committing to it or you're not—you can't just wear it a bit like a sheer sleeve on a blouse or a touch of leopard print on a bag. It's quite the divisive dressing choice. I happen to wear this combination often, most frequently a pair of Alexa Chung x JuJu's Embellished Jelly sandals and a ribbed-knit sock, and my friends hate it because they say it looks "ugly" and like I've "just thrown on the first shoes at the front door." I have to insist that it really is fashion, despite the eye rolls I get in return.

Delve into the history of the look, and it turns out this combination is somewhat of a classic: Socks and sandals were first debuted by the Romans. That makes the trend something close to over 2000 years old. While dressing like a Roman doesn't sound too bad, the real negative connotations come from elsewhere. It's associated with dads and terribly dressed tourists and hikers. But the reality now is that all those previously mocked groups are being emulated on the runways, in street style and even by the A-list—but particularly when it comes to socks and sandals.

The only question that remains is knowing how to do this without looking like it's something you unintentionally put on as you dashed out to Tescos. My own take is to clash your sandals with your socks as much as possible—whether that's pink socks with black chunky sandals or gold mesh socks with metallic Velcro sandals. Seeing something all over Instagram often feels like a strong indication of a trend, but it's always good to check the facts too. When we predicted the sandals trends of 2019 back in the winter months, we had a feeling we'd be seeing a lot of sporty sandals (thanks, mostly, to our columnist Monikh), strappy heels, flip-flops and even a rise in Birkenstocks. Summer 2019 felt like it was going to be a summer of simplicity for our footwear, be it the barely-there beauties from Topshop or the return of an old classic or two.

But as the warmer months roll out, we've been curious to find out what people actually responded to and which trends are taking off. Instagram can feel like an echo chamber at times, and we wanted to confirm which sandals are actually popular so far this year. According to Lyst's data, "wedged," "gladiator" and "rubber sandals" are the most commonly searched-for sandal terms. Next, the seven "boring" fashion trends we can't get enough of in 2019.

Like fine wine or elegant cheeses, it looks like Birkenstock sandals are only getting better with age. At 245 years old, these classic shoes are doing well—really well. The company has tripled its sales since 2012, which is no surprise considering we see its signature sandals consistently popping up on our Instagram feeds again this season. They've long shed the reputation of solely being associated with quirky hippie uncles.
