Swimwear is something I tend to approach with equal parts excitement and dread. I don't know if it's the lighter mornings and evenings or the fact that I've just booked myself a trip to Greece in a few short weeks, but over the past few days, try as I may, I've found myself thinking nonstop about swimwear. I haven't been on a beach holiday in a few years, and prior to that, I think it had been a while since I updated my swimwear even then. If a brand has swimwear in its spring/summer collection, chances are it’ll only cater to those up to a D-cup. With DD+ considered a "specialist” section, if you have smaller boobs, you can count yourself as one of the lucky ones who can shop practically anywhere.

But we all know swimwear shopping isn’t that easy, and while every body is completely different, there are of course some styles I would like to highlight as better suited to small busts. As a 32D, I can usually find the equivalent to my size in most swimwear sections, but over the years, I’ve learnt which styles tend to suit my shape more.

I’ve dedicated a decade of my life to writing about French style, but one subject I’ve admittedly overlooked is swimwear. For me, swimwear has never held much allure—I put this down to living in Britain, where many of us only require swimwear whenever we take a trip abroad. The second the first warm day comes along, my attention shifts to all things swimwear, partly because of my job as a fashion editor and partly because I prefer to spend 99% of my time in the summer in a bikini or one-piece. So because of the sunny days peaking through over the last few weeks, I've already spent quite a few hours scouring the swimwear offerings this year. My biggest takeaway? Zara, H&M, and Mango have seriously stepped up their games in the department.

Jennifer Lopez certainly loves to experiment with fashion trends, but if you look closely, her style has actually stayed remarkably consistent over the years. Unlike our contemporaries who live in warmer climates year-round, our window for bikini wearing is significantly smaller—usually two weeks in the height of summer when we jet off somewhere. Still, that doesn’t mean we can’t (and don’t) make the most of this opportunity when it presents itself. Arguably, we Brits might give our swimwear even more consideration, as our time in them is significantly shorter but, my, so sweet. 

Putting one-pieces to the side for a second, let’s concentrate on bikinis—specially the bikini trends 2022 has to offer. There can be a drastic shift between bikini trends year on year; for example, last year’s obsession with the ’90s high-leg silhouette seems to have quietened somewhat. 1. SEQUIN-EMBELLISHED

When it comes to being at sea, whether that’s frolicking in the ocean or riding shotgun on a sailboat, French women do it with a certain je ne sais quoi. They have acquired taste when it comes to swimwear and resort wear. French swimwear is unmatched. Perhaps it’s down to living on the periphery of the ocean and spending summers by the Riviera. The wide span of coastline calls for a working swim wardrobe for trips to the beach at a moment's notice. We’re likely in unanimity about how distinguishable their swimwear offerings are, as there’s been a growth in the popularity of French swimwear labels such as Eres. The brand has been producing swimsuits for over 50 years, with the essence of simplicity and timelessness at its core. French brands such as Sézane and Rouje are following suit by adding beachwear to their rosters.

What I love most about French swimwear is that it’s distinctive whilst remaining classic. You’ll never look at a refined cut or pattern with regret years down the line. It seems easy wearing is a high priority, too, as is the importance of figure-accentuating skims. Although high-leg cuts are reminiscent of the ’90s and Baywatch, it’s proven ageless along with the all-in-one. Swimsuits in block colourways and classic patterns—spanning gingham, stripes and ditsy florals—take precedence. You’re likely to find bold primary colours, from scarlet to cobalt blue, and they are styles that you can wear throughout the ages with pride.

With regard to cuts, square necklines and high-waisted briefs are among the most celebrated styles. The ’80s revival of the seersucker fabrication fits seamlessly into the French ethos of simplicity and has an understated allure. Style Notes: Among some of the classic prints are floral motifs, stripes, and gingham; styles you’ll wear time and again.

Style Notes: The Hunza G influence has taken the world by storm, but French women have long donned the textured swimsuit. Malleable, comfortable and with added intrigue, it’s a great way to elevate the basic bathing suit.

Style Notes: When it comes to colour, the bolder the better. Oranges, limes and blues aren’t out of place in a French swim wardrobe.

Summer may not have officially begun just yet, but the brighter skies and warmer temperatures have inspired me to think ahead. I just booked a holiday to Greece, and somewhere in the back of my mind, I'm already weighing up my swimwear options for it. However, it's been a minute since I found myself in need of swim attire, so I feel a little out of practice when it comes to assembling looks to wear to the beach or, indeed, to lie by the pool in. This is precisely why I’m turning my attention to celebrities.

Seeing as they live very different (read: more luxurious) lives than most, celebrities know a thing or two about dressing for their hols, so who better to seek inspiration from? It would appear the stars have aligned their annual holidays, as so many stylish celebs are soaking up the rays in some exotic destination as I type—and doing so very stylishly, I might add. Style Notes: While it may have once been considered passé to match your outfit to your bikini so acutely, fashion has taken a 180-degree turn. There are a few things I do every time I lie by the pool or go to the beach (after vigorously applying sunscreen): scrunch up my bikini bottoms to minimise tan lines, grip said bikini bottoms with both hands when exiting bodies of water such as the pool and ocean to prevent slippage, and take Instagram photos from very low angles to make my legs look as long as possible. While there seems to be little that can be done about the slightly reddish hue my skin takes on despite the copious amount of SPF I apply, this season's most popular bikini trend solves all the remaining warm-weather challenges I've encountered.
