On the runways, designers like Peter Do, Lacoste and Hermès embraced the barely-there belt, styling it with jeans, skirts and dresses. And it’s not just luxury brands taking part—high-street labels are already playing with this growing trend, and producing some chic iterations in the process. Whilst I'd love nothing more to own one embellished by an iconic brass "H", these more affordable iterations are more in my current wheelhouse.

What makes this trend even more appealing is just that—how easy and affordable it is to incorporate into your wardrobe. I’ve found beautiful skinny belts for as little as £15, and they’re also a breeze to shop secondhand. Leather, being such a durable material, holds up remarkably well over time, and platforms like eBay, Vestiaire Collective, and Vinted are treasure troves for preloved pieces such as this—I even found a pre-loved Chanel style currently on sale, which you'll have to fight me over below.

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok recently, you might have heard whispers that more than a few fashion trends from the 2010s are back.

Shocking, I know—even I didn’t believe it at first. But then I started looking out for signs, and they were everywhere. Thankfully, I'm not talking about anything too questionable. Rather, I've noticed some far subtler but highly impactful throwback trends doing the rounds again that many of us used to reach for back in the day. Without a doubt, my favourite is the jeans belt.

Crafted from sleek leather with bold, uniform stud detailing, this statement piece has become a modern icon since its introduction in 2023. Over the past two years, it’s ballooned in popularity amongst influencers and style enthusiasts alike, and its momentum shows no sign of slowing down.

But whilst Khaite’s belt had insiders buzzing and frantically scouring resale sites to grab one after it instantly sold out, its hefty price tag just isn’t for everyone. Fortunately, the jeans belt is one of the easiest items to shop secondhand or on a budget. High-quality leather belts are built to last decades, and charity shops and online reselling platforms are brimming with options. Just in time for the beginning of the festive season, Victoria Beckham was out this week wearing a bright red jumper with a pair of flowing camel trousers. Gripped as I was by her low-key take on festive style, it was actually her elegant accessory that stopped me in my tracks.

If you ever wonder why we talk about Jennifer Lawrence so much, the answer is simple: She's cool and her off-duty outfits are actually pretty accessible (aside from the fact that they're usually all designer pieces). But the outfits are things you'd probably be able to put together using pieces in your closet. Her latest casual outfit stood out to me because it's a great way to show off a belt.

Because the bottom half of the shirt is left unbuttoned, it's a great way to show off your belt (which, in Lawrence's case, is by The Row). We're only a month in, and so far 2024 has been a great year for trends. Having learnt some lessons from the 2010s, plucked the best from the '00s and absorbed precious inspiration from the '90s, fashion lovers have managed to pull together an amalgamation of some of the chicest key trends from the past few decades to shape the way that fashion looks today.

Whilst the return of some key trends has felt like a natural evolution, the reemergence of others has taken us by surprise. But, with some very 2024 twists, it's hard to understand why we haven't been wearing them for longer. For me, no item speaks to this as well as the studded belt.

Forever relied upon for a cinched silhouette, the humble accessory latterly took on an "indie sleaze" edge, often featuring square, studded detailing and a sharper finish, but now that 2024 has got its hands on it, new-season belt styles are looking fresher and chicer, retaining a subtler grungy feel with overarching elegant shapes. There are lots of temping iterations cropping up from our favourite brands, but the fashion set can't seem to stay way from one particular style.

We talk a lot about handbags, shoes and jewellery here at Who What Wear, but there's another key accessory that we're guilty of overlooking: Belts.

My theory is that we tend to view this item as merely a practical addition to our outfits, used to cinch in too-loose jeans or give shape to a slouchy dress. But recently, I've noticed that I've finally clocked on the aesthetic value of the humble belt. The truth is, this simple strip of leather can completely transform an ensemble. A statement buckle or intricately-embroidered strap might just take your look from drab to polished in seconds flat.

Because belts have an actual function (besides just looking good), they're worth investing in. Especially when there are so many beautiful and high-quality designer belts doing the rounds on Instagram—think Celine's Triomphe and Gucci's Marmont—proving their versatility in a wide spectrum of outfits.

When the topic of designer accessories comes up, it's easy to immediately jump to the conclusion that handbags are on the agenda, but some accessories are just as much of a cult buy as their arm-candy counterparts. As my headline may have given away, the subject I'm focusing on today is designer belts.

Designer belts have always been prevalent. Though it might appear to be a recent phenomenon, you can actually trace Gucci's GG belt back as far as the early '70s. The beauty of such belts is that they're undeniably classic but still have a trend-led appeal to them. And while we could debate their actual affordability all day long, I think we can all agree that designer belts are more affordable than designer bags and shoes generally tend to be.

Although rooted in fashion history, I would argue that now, in 2025, the desire for owning a designer belt has reached a fever pitch. And I've noticed one style, in particular, seems to be growing increasingly popular in style circles. Almost out of nowhere, Celine's Triomphe belt catapulted into the sartorial spotlight a few years ago and it seems to be having another resurgence in 2025 and keeps following me around on social media—not that I mind one bit. It's certainly making my feed a chicer place.

The belt was introduced following the reissue of Celine's Triomphe bag in 2019 along with the rest of Hedi Slimane's debut collection for the brand. As for the Triomphe's origin story? It's very charming. In 1972, the brand's founder Céline Vipiana's car broke down in Paris right in front of the Arc de Triomphe. While stranded, she became inspired by the iconic monument's ornate chain detailing—the outline of which makes up the central part of the Triomphe clasp. Flanked by two Cs, Celine's founder immediately adopted it as a house emblem.

If you’ve been looking at the recent runways or outfits unfolding among the fashion set, there’s one literally quite small trend that’s actually impossible to ignore: belly chains. I know, probably not what you were expecting—but the 2000s trend is back and stronger than ever. I have to admit that the accessory scared me the first time around and never entered my wardrobe, but I’ve suddenly been convinced to give it a second chance.

I think the change of heart comes down to the styling. When belly chains first came onto my radar in the ‘00s, they were worn with other trends I avoided, like low-rise pants and velour sweats, but now we’re seeing them paired with more polished looks. At Chanel, belly chains were added to skirt suits, bikinis, and jeans. At Jacquemus, with a cropped cardigan and suiting. At Dior, with a knit sweater and logo pants. And fashion people have their own chic ways of styling them.

As I mentioned, belly chains are a piece I never envisioned wearing myself. With a whole new perspective on how to style them, I'm now fully on-board. For my first attempt at wearing the piece, I decided to pair one with a bold pink jacket and ripped jeans. I love the subtle detail of the belly chain peeking through the midriff-baring look.

I styled this look with a pair of ripped jeans and a chain necklace to add some '90s-inspired elements.

I have spent the majority of this week researching autumn/winter 2020 trends, and so I have saved hundreds of images of catwalk looks that I think will impact how we get dressed over the next six months. There is one styling trick that is

making me look forward to a drop in temperatures, even though I'm reluctant to actually admit this. Almost every major show on the schedule included blazers cinched in at the waist with a belt—either with a statement belt like the jewel-encrusted chains at Chanel or a skinny black leather belt that makes it a subtle accent to the look. 

At Prada the belts featured circular clasps and a prominent logo, and were used to play with proportions on the already oversized and boxy blazers. Nanushka's belts ticked off another of the key trends for autumn winter 2020: fringing. Beige trouser suits were punctuated with a black fringe belt with a gold circular clasp. Some designers even created blazers with inbuilt belts, such as the studded jackets at Jil Sander. Unless you’ve been walking around with your head in the clouds, the fact that the ’90s are back and more visible than ever won’t have escaped you. Ongoing logomania means we’re constantly scouring Vestiaire and rummaging through our storage boxes for all things branded. Previously worn as a status symbol by It girls like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, we now also have the added bonus of nostalgia too. Right now on Vestiaire, Dior’s logo bags (especially the saddle ones) are trending alongside quilted leather Chanel bags, Gianni Versace’s baroque motifs and chunky Hermès necklaces—so far, so logo.

The 1990s and early 2000s, for many, was about rejecting the subtle and opting for garishly branded merch. "Juicy” was splashed across the butts of track pants worldwide, often in rhinestones, LV was monogramed onto mini baguette bags brandished with pop art cherries and earlobes were adorned in double C Chanel earrings.

In the here and now, Gucci has been advocating the revival since Alessandro Michele’s debut as the creative director for A/W 15. Alessandro has given new life to the once-neglected double-G motif, prompting the fashion flock to return to overtly branded bags and ultra-popular logo belts, as was the preference way back when.

For those looking for the most accessible way to wear this trend, the logo belt has become a real—and hugely versatile—frontrunner. Even Meghan Markle—she of the most minimalistic and elegant style—is into it, sporting a Givenchy black logo belt at her first royal engagement with the Queen to the opening of the Mersey Gateway and again to the Royal Ascot with Harry. But her neat take on the trend is a million miles away from the more brash or streetwear-led options that are taking up outfit space in other parts of the fashion world.

Meghan’s look shows the potential for a subtle nod to the logo trend, pairing her sleek Givenchy belt with a minimalistic dress each time. For casual-wear, double up on the ’90s and pair straight-leg jeans with a leather logo belt and vest or tee. If you’re looking to move this trend right into 2018, designers like Balenciaga, Off-White and others have been splashing their branding on brightly coloured fabric belts designed to be wrapped around the waist several times.

There are loads of items you can get away with buying on the cheap. For example, a £40 pair of espadrilles is no more resistant to being beaten up during one summer's wear than a £400 pair is. The same goes for a Breton top—no one will ever really know whether yours is from an expensive French brand or your local Topshop. Similarly, basket bags, statement earrings, sunglasses (so long as they're UVA/UVB compliant) and other short-lived accessory trends are best to buy on the high street. Sure, higher price tags will guarantee better quality and promote a more conscious shopping approach (very important), but I believe there are certain items that are more worthy of your cash/credit/soul because they really do last, fit better, feel better and never go out of fashion.

In my twenties, it wouldn't have bothered me, but now that I've seen enough fast-fashion items end up in charity shops, I've realised that buying quality accessories isn't just a myth fashion people peddle—it really makes a difference to one's forever closet. Clothing trends can be slightly more transient, but a decent add-on tends to offer unparalleled longevity. So keep reading to see the accessories I'd suggest you never scrimp on and the versions for each that are best in class for 2018.

Gold Hoops

There are plenty of brilliant cheap gold earrings out there in the world, but knowing that you have a pair that will literally last you an entire lifetime is pretty special. They never go out of style and you can wear them every day, so the cost-per-wear value (as well as not breaking or causing green ears) is pretty good too.

Loafers

One of the worst fashion mishaps is when a pair of flat shoes cut your feet to shreds. Which is why a decent pair of leather loafers (and right now it's all about Bally's impeccably well-made ones) will serve you for years to come. Keep them protected with the right leather creams and get them re-soled whenever required.

Anything Monogrammed

There are two sides to this argument. Firstly, it's not good to buy counterfeit goods. Secondly, the logo trend has led some high-street brands to create their own similar-looking in-house logos… a bit questionable, perhaps?

Silk Scarves

You may disagree on this one, but coming from a scarf addict and connoisseur, you can see the difference between a cheap scarf and one that has been rendered in silk and expertly printed and designed. These little outfit-transformers can work year after year (in tons of ways), so you may as well find one that can go the distance.

Logo Belt

Belts (particularly those with logos) do not look good when they're made out of low-end leather and cheap fastenings. In this case, save your money for the good stuff. We know some women who wear their mother's vintage Gucci logo belts because the quality has lasted them decades.

Tan Bag

What is it about cheap tan bags that look so, well, cheap? I'm not sure what this boils down to, but since this piece is a capsule wardrobe must-have, I would say it's well worth saving up for a top-notch version.

Saving your dollars for a piece that will last you for years to come doesn't sound so bad now, doesn't it?

It's not an exaggeration to say that, thanks to the now-iconic Gucci GG belt, made famous by Alessandro Michele's first collection in 2015, designer logo belts have become one of the most ubiquitous luxury accessories of the last decade. Now, most super-brands have their own iteration of the classic accessory and adding any one of them to your outfit rotation has become one of the easiest (and most accessible) ways to instantly elevate any look.

Until recently, I was quite ambivalent about logo belts (they have historically had slight "look at me—I'm designer!" vibes), but I've noticed more and more stylish individuals embracing the look in a more low-key way. For example, some choose to bring out the retro undertones with flares and printed blouses, while others use theirs to add interest to minimalist separates. The original GG belt was even reimagined on Gucci's F/W 23 catwalk two years ago, paired with slouchy jeans and oversized Oxford shirts—a move that reignited the fashion world's interest in the iconic piece. Plus, logo belts of all kind are a (slightly) more affordable way to bag a time-tested piece from a big-name designer. It's a win-win.
