As a beauty editor and perfume lover, I see many perfume trends come and go. And as the autumn perfume trends begin to emerge amongst the new perfume launches and on my social feeds, an unexpected theme has emerged in the forecast: rain perfumes.

"As Brits, we have a rather particular relationship with rain. We’re used to it shaping so much of the year; we talk about it, plan around it, dress for it, complain about it and, secretly, I think, rather love it," says Sarah Reason, founder of Soliflore. "It’s part of our landscape and, in a way, part of us. Rain is woven into so many of our memories: muddy walks, wet pavements, the sound of rain against the window, coming home and putting the kettle on. It’s familiar, comforting and uniquely British."

Curiously, Google searches for rain perfumes are up 5,000% this week. And after a long summer of heatwaves, it could well be why we're gravitating towards the scent as we welcome in a new season. However, the notes associated with downpours may be speaking to us on a deeper level, allowing us to connect with nature and all its elements. In many ways, rain perfumes allow us to touch grass in a quick spritz.

"Nature has always offered us a sense of escape from the noise of everyday life, and scent is one of the quickest ways to get there; few smells are quite as evocative as rain. The heady smell of rain on earth just after a downpour, the smell of wet leaves and moss in the woods, rain hitting a warm pavement, or that cool, almost metallic freshness in the air just before a storm," says Reason. "Perhaps that’s why rain has become such an interesting theme in fragrance. We’re not necessarily looking for a perfume that smells like standing in a downpour. We’re looking for that feeling, the sense of being surrounded by nature, of taking a deep breath of cool, fresh air, of the world being briefly quiet and washed clean," she says.

What Is the Scent of Rain?

"Rain, or petrichor, isn't actually one smell, but a combination of tiny molecules being released into the air when raindrops hit the ground, akin to a cocktail of whatever’s happening in the air and on the ground around you," explains Reason.

"One of these is geosmin, a compound made by microbes in the soil, responsible for the unmistakable earthy scent we associate with rain. Plants, leaves and fungi add to the mix, which is why rain in a forest can smell woody, green and slightly mushroomy, whereas rain hitting a warm pavement can pick up all sorts of dust, oils and other compounds that have been sitting there, giving it a sharper, more mineral-like smell," she says. "And if you’ve ever noticed that fresh, almost metallic scent before a thunderstorm, that can be down to ozone, which is produced during electrical activity in the atmosphere."

Cassie Lomas, a professional makeup artist with over 30 years of experience and the founder of the brand CASSIE, states, “Skin loses collagen and elastin as we age, so it becomes thinner and less bouncy. You get more dryness, less natural radiance, and fine lines start showing up more, especially around the eyes and mouth. Makeup that used to sit beautifully can start clinging to dry patches or settling into lines. It's not a bad thing; it just means your approach needs to change with your skin.”

How Do I Prep Mature Skin for Makeup?

"Prep matters more with mature skin than at any other age. Cleanse, serum, then a good moisturiser, giving each layer a minute to sink in before the next. Don't rush straight into makeup after moisturiser, or everything will slip. A hydrating primer on top smooths things out without adding weight. Comfortable, cushioned skin is what you're after—never dry or tight—because makeup always looks better on well-prepped skin", says Lomas.

Makeup Application Tips for Those With Mature Skin

When it comes to applying makeup on mature skin, Lomas always follows four application tips:

1. Less is more - Build in thin layers rather than one heavy layer, so it still looks like skin.
2. Blend upwards and outwards - Work in the direction the skin naturally lifts.
3. Set only where you need to - Target the T-zone rather than the whole face, so you don't lose radiance elsewhere.
4. Soft over hard - Whether it's your brows, eyeliner, blush, or more, a soft and blended finish will always win over anything harsh or defined.

What Ingredients Should Those With Mature Skin Should Look for in Makeup?

Lomas states, "Look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin and squalane, which are all great for skin hydration; these stop makeup from sitting in fine lines. Then, look for peptides and niacinamide, which will help with texture and barrier support over time. I also always suggest opting for makeup products marketed as hydrating or radiance-boosting rather than heavier matte finishes, as these will sit better on the skin and look more natural instead of cakey and accentuating fine lines."

What Ingredients Should Those With Mature Skin Should Avoid in Makeup?

"If you have mature skin, you should avoid products that contain large amounts of heavy silicones, as they can sit on the surface and highlight texture instead of smoothing it. High alcohol content should also ring alarm bells, because of the harsh drying effect it can have on the skin. I also always suggest avoiding makeup products marketed as matte or long-wear formulas, as these are built to grip the skin and tend to dry it out, as well as any formulas with shimmer or glitter because they draw attention to texture instead of disguising it," explains Lomas.

If I added up how much money I've spent on back-to-back gel manicures over the years, I'd probably be able to take myself on a five-star holiday for the same amount. What can I say, I love having my nails done. That said, I'm currently saving for a wedding, and my natural nails are definitely looking (and feeling) a bit weak and discoloured as of late, so in a bid to improve both my nails and my bank balance, I cancelled my next salon appointment and bought myself a nail brightener instead.

I hadn't tried one before, but after giving this product a go, I am completely hooked. My nails have never looked so elegant and put together from an at-home polish. In fact, I've cancelled all my nail appointments this autumn, and will only be using a nail brightener from here on out. Below, I've rounded up my current go-to formulas, and I even spoke with nail expert and brand founder Leighton Denny MBE to learn more about what makes a nail brightener so effective.

What Is a Nail Brightener?

There are lots of nail health products on the market, from nail hardeners to nail strengtheners, but nail brighteners are a little different. "I like to think of a nail brightener as like a BB cream for the nails," says Denny. "It enhances the natural nail rather than covering it up, helping to brighten and conceal minor imperfections while giving the nails a fresh, healthy-looking glow. It’s perfect if your nails are looking a little dull or discoloured, but it’s just as much about that 'your nails but better' look."

As explained by Denny, although these products are great for concealing minor imperfections, they work for anyone and everyone. "You don’t need to have a particular nail concern to wear one," he says. "If you like that clean, polished, barely-there manicure, this is for you. For me, it’s about enhancing the natural nail rather than masking it, leaving nails looking fresh, healthy and beautifully groomed."

How to Use a Nail Brightener

The best bit? These products couldn't be easier to use. "Apply one coat as a brightening base coat under your nail colour, or build with two to three coats worn alone for an illuminated nude look," says Denny. You don’t even need a top coat.

"It’s such an easy way to make natural nails look instantly fresher and more polished, whether you want just a hint of brightness or a little more colour," Denny adds.

1. Manucurist Active Bright

This Manucurist polish is one of my holy grails. It instantly illuminates the nail with a subtle yet buildable pearlescent effect. Nails look brighter and healthier, and the formula contains lemon extract, AHAs and hexanal to strengthen and repair the natural nail. If you like a milky nail look, you will love this.

2. Leighton Denny Nail Illuminator

Speaking of milky nails, this Leighton Denny Nail Illuminator is another favourite of mine. It comes in a stylish milky white hue and acts as a base coat, polish, nail brightener and nail treatment all in one. Similar to the polish above, it has a subtle shimmer and is packed with nourishing ingredients such as vitamin E and lime tree extract. Plus, it lasts a surprisingly long time on the nail.

3. Dior Nail Glow

If I'm cancelling my nail appointment, I want my at-home manicure to feel just as luxurious, and this Dior polish always does the trick. Not only is it gorgeous to look at, but the formula adds an elegant tint to the nail, making them look brighter, shinier and more polished. It's the closest thing I've found to a salon-worthy manicure at home.

4. Nails Inc. Glow and Grow

For just under £10, this Nails Inc product really impressed me. It adds such a glossy, bright effect to the nail and can be used as a base coat or on its own, depending on your desired finish. However, it's the formula that I really love, which works to strengthen and nourish the nail thanks to a blend of hyaluronic acid and castor oil.

5. Chanel Le Vernis La Base Camélia

This Chanel nail polish is technically a base coat, but I love using it as an all-in-one product for a subtle yet sophisticated manicure. As soon as I apply it, my nails look smoother, brighter and glossier. Plus, the camellia oil coats the nail in a protective layer, so I know they are taken care of, too.

6. Manucurist Active Smooth

I know I've already talked about Manucurist, but the formulas are so good that I thought the Active Smooth polish deserved a place in this edit. It's not as brightening as Active Bright, but it's ideal for smoothing and blurring the nail, making everything look healthier and brighter overall. I like to think of this as a skin tint for your nails.

While there’s been an undeniable shift towards no-mascara makeup this summer, sparked in part thanks to Zendaya’s ethereal bare lash look at The Odyssey New York premiere, I’ve never really been a mascara person. And not because I’m some kind of trend-setting beauty maverick, but because I’ve simply been omitting mascara from my daily routine long before it became a more intentional beauty statement. While I do love the bare lash look, for me the choice has always been less about embracing a minimalist makeup look and more about the fact that I simply don’t get along with mascara.

As someone who’s constantly touching their face (I apologise to all the dermatologists that I spend time talking with), even the most promising mascaras tend to end up smudged beneath my eyes or transferred onto my lids by lunchtime. Add in the fact that my eyes can be quite sensitive, and are prone to reacting to everything from pollen to windy weather, and it’s not long before any carefully applied mascara starts to migrate down my face. There’s also the fact that my lashes are naturally short and quite curly. Not only have I never felt that I really look like myself with dramatic, false-lash effect mascara, but getting the product onto said lashes in the first place is no easy feat. So, instead, I decided years ago to just skip it entirely and now only apply it on the very special occasions that I fancy a proper face of glam.

Yet when Jones Road launched its Minimalist Defining Mascara last month, I found myself drawn in by the campaign imagery of subtly defined, softly fluttering lashes. “Put together, but never overdone,” read one of the teaser posts. Jones Road has built its reputation around pared-back, effortless makeup, and the idea of a mascara that focused purely on definition rather than drama immediately appealed to me. Could this be the formula that would finally make mascara feel like something I actually want to wear, rather than another step I’m waiting to remove? I decided to put it to the test and find out…

The Formula

Like all of the Jones Road skin-friendly formulas, the Minimalist Defining Mascara is packed with ingredients that actually look after your lashes first and foremost. It contains a peptide complex blend to help support keratin production to strengthen lashes and help them to look fuller, alongside panthenol to help condition. When I’m choosing a mascara, I’m always looking for something that can provide definition without the weight—I really hate my lashes to feel stiff, overloaded or coated in a thick layer of product, so I was also impressed that this formula uses plant-derived waxes to help build volume and definition without any heaviness. It’s definitely a mascara that has been formulated with a more natural finish in mind, and feels designed for those, like myself, who want their lashes to look elevated but still feel natural.

The Application

While we’ve covered the formula, when it comes to mascara application, the key to success often lies with the wand. This one is a flexible, silicone wand that’s actually quite small in size—perfect if you have smaller eyes, shorter lashes or hooded eyelids (of which I tick all three boxes). It’s slightly curved so you can reach even the tiny corner lashes, and the bristles themselves aren’t hugely long, which makes it easy to apply precisely and without ending up with product all over your eyelid.

I’m sure most of us know how to apply mascara, but I started at the roots, giving the wand a little wiggle before pulling it up to the tips and was really impressed with how it glided through the lashes to disperse the pigment evenly. For me, a single coat was perfect for a subtle daytime look, but it’s easy enough to layer up slightly for extra definition and never ended up looking clumpy. Also, as someone with naturally very dark lashes, I really liked the shade Pitch Black, which was beautifully inky and deep. However, the mascara also comes in a Rich Brown option, which might appeal to those who find black mascara too stark or simply want an even more natural-looking lash.

The Verdict

Honestly, I never thought I’d see the day that I’d be writing a mascara review with quite this much enthusiasm, but Jones Road Minimalist Defining Mascara has seriously impressed me. For years, mascara has been one of those makeup products that I would happily do without, but I’ve been reaching for this tube on more days than not over the last few weeks.

I think what appeals to me about it is that this isn’t a mascara that is trying to convince me that I need dramatic lashes. Instead of trying to mimic the kind of fullness and volume that a set of falsies provides, it offers a more understated approach—providing careful definition, expert separation, and a pop of pigment which feels much more in line with how I actually like to wear makeup.

I’m also drawn to the formula itself, which shows careful consideration for the condition of the lashes themselves. Although it doesn’t claim to be anything close to a lash-care treatment, the inclusion of peptides and other nourishing ingredients is a definite bonus and means that the mascara feels genuinely weightless on lashes. Plus, the fact that it’s dermatologist-tested and safe for sensitive skin is a dream for this watery-eyed editor.

For me, the appeal of a great everyday mascara is that it can add just enough emphasis to the eyes without changing the entire feel of my makeup. I prefer a softer, more understated look, and this is exactly what Jones Road Minimalist Defining Mascara provides. For anyone who usually skips mascara because they dislike a bold lash look and want something that just feels like a slightly more polished version of their natural lashes, this is a mascara that fits the bill.

I have been working as a beauty editor for over ten years and, as such, have tested a lot of mascaras. I've been wearing the Jones Road Minimalist Defining Mascara for the last few weeks to see how well it separates lashes, adds definition and lasts on my short lashes.

During my high school and college days, I was never one to shy away from putting my hair through the wringer. I was at the salon at least once a month to straighten my 3B/3C curly hair, and somewhere along the line, I decided I wanted to try highlights. Spoiler alert: it didn't end well. Even though I was loving my honey-colored highlights, the damage that it caused was undeniable. Anytime I wore my curls out, I noticed more frizz, breakage, and overall dryness (deep conditioner became my best friend).

Fast forward to 2018, and I had somewhat of a curly hair wake up call. For some people heat styling makes everything more manageable, but I was on a mission to re-embraced my curls and wanted to reset. From that day on, I decided no more straightening my hair and definitely no color. As tempting as it's been, I had become quite comfortable with the idea that I would never see my hair in a different shade for the sake of maintaining my healthy hair.

That is until the As I Am Curl Color came across my TikTok. It was marketed as a temporary hair color that doubles as a gel and cream—there would be no damage, and it would come off during my next wash. At first, I thought this was a way too good to be true, but I also loved the idea of potentially being able to color my hair. So as the curious beauty editor I am, I decided to take the leap and try it myself. Read on for my full review.

About The As I Am Curl Color

The As I Am Curl Color is marketed as a "temporary curl gel that lasts up to one wash," according the brand's website. It’s formulated with ceramides to boost moisture, strength, and elasticity, in addition to Jamaican black castor oil for thickness and shine. It’s ammonia, paraffin, and silicone-free, and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals.

The Curl Color also contains sub-micron technology that breaks ingredients down into smaller particles for better absorption. This ultimately strengthens the scalps protective barrier and reduces the risk of irritation. The results? A medium hold that locks the style of your choice in for 24 hours while improving hair moisture by 60%. The application process is quick, easy, and damage-free.

How I Used The As I Am Curl Color

To kick off the process, I washed my hair with my go-to products (I've been using the Pattern shampoo and conditioner for years). From there, I put my hair in a claw clip and set up everything I needed. This included the Bold Gold Curl Color, a box of disposable gloves, my styling brush, and my leave-in conditioner.

Also, it's important to note that the Curl Color can stain your hands and clothing, so definitely keep that in mind before you begin. Since I was going for highlights rather than a full color change, I carefully sectioned my hair off. My hair dries fast, so at this point, I had to re-wet it using my spray bottle.

From there, I generously applied my leave-in and detangled my curls before reaching for the Curl Color. I took a more conservative approach, making sure to apply the color more heavily to the ends and work the product upwards on the hair shaft. While you can dry your hair with a diffuser to lock the color into place, I decided to air dry as I typically would.

The Results

On the first day, I definitely saw noticeable results, but the color really popped on the second day. The Bold Gold transformed my dark brown hair into an ash brown that looked like an extension of my natural color. One thing I noticed is that the color has somewhat of a shimmer to it, so if you touch your hair, even after it's done, you'll notice a small amount on your fingertips.

That said, the shade I used didn't get on my clothes or my pillows in the days following the application. As I Am offers other vibrant colors that are more pigmented, so I can't speak to those but I didn't have any transfer issues with the gold. Admittedly, one of my concerns was that it wasn't going to wash out, but it was completely gone in just one wash.

Overall, the gel cream formula left my curls looking shiny and defined significantly longer than some other products I've tested. To say I was impressed would be an understatement.

Is the As I Am Curl Color worth it?

Truthfully, I think whether or not this product is worth it mainly depends on your hair type and wash day schedule. I wash my hair every five to seven days, so I felt like I got my money's worth. You also get the extra peace of mind knowing that if you don't like the color or you messed up, you can wash it out. The fact that it's temporary also gives you the opportunity to switch things up as often as you'd like without the damage, making it great for special occasions or in-the-moment decisions that don't require long-term commitment.

The color aside, the gel cream formula genuinely exceeded my expectations. I was slightly concerned that my hair would end up super frizzy, but as I previously mentioned, my curls still ended up defined. At the end of the day, this product does exactly what it promises: temporary color, zero damage, and an easy wash out process.

Fragrance is incredibly personal. In fact, out of all the beauty categories, I'd argue that it's the most subjective of them all. The scent we choose to wear on our skin is a reflection of who we are, or who we wish to be on any given day. It's part of the joy of perfume, or owning a signature scent, but it also makes it particularly hard to shop for if you're buying online and haven't smelled the fragrance IRL. But what is most special about it is that it creates an aura of scent that I've never experienced with other perfumes, and garners compliments unlike any other. It's a skin scent that is fleeting—you might not actually be able to smell it on yourself all the time—but after a couple of hours, it will become noticeable to your nose again. I love wearing it on its own, but it also makes for a great fragrance primer should you want to layer it with other perfumes. It amplifies other scents beautifully, turning up the volume but in the most minimalistic of ways. There's a reason why fashion and beauty editors consider this their signature perfume. For that reason, I consider it a total foolproof blind-buy perfume.

2. Merit Beauty Retrospect

On days when I don't know what fragrance I want to wear, I will usually reach for this elegant perfume. To me, Merit Retrospect is the perfume equivalent of a gold pair of earrings. It goes with any outfit or occasion, and has a sparkling quality that I cannot get enough of. It opens with a burst of glimmering pear and bergamot before it mellows into a smooth, skin-like scent on your wrists. The mossy base gives this chypre fragrance a golden quality that makes it exude sophistication, and the extrait potency means it lasts for hours on end on the skin.

3. Glossier You

There's a common theme amongst many of these blind-buy safe fragrances. Rather than the perfume smothering the wearer, they instead enhance, making you smell like the very best version of you. And Glossier You fits that bill exactly (Glossier's tagline is that it needs "you" to complete it). This is a creamy, skin-like scent that has incredible projection and lasting power. I often smell this on a colleague in our office and compliment the scent, only for her to tell me she'd sprayed it six hours earlier that day. Its lasting power is notable, and it's a total compliment magnet.

4. Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu

I'd consider nearly all of Chanel's perfumes blind-buy safe, but its newest addition, Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu, absolutely requires your attention. Fronted by Gracie Abrams, this new perfume takes everything that's adored about the original Coco Mademoiselle perfume, but with an amber and lychee twist that I'm just desperate to wear to a bar to drink cocktails. It's sparkling and zesty on the opening, then lingers with a smooth vanilla and earthy patchouli base that I cannot get enough of. If you're gifting a fragrance lover, there will be no buyer's remorse here.

6. Dior Miss Dior

When it comes to classic perfumes, few are more iconic than Miss Dior. This is the fragrance I'd point you in the direction of if you love a floral perfume. The iconic fragrance has recently been reformulated, and I'd say it's even more crowd-pleasing than before. Creamy vanilla and roasted almond sit on a bed of velvety florals, which make it undeniably pretty and easy to wear, drying down into an addictive woody base. In fact, I'd say that many of Dior's perfumes are blind-buy safe, but Miss Dior will always be appreciated by your recipient (even if that's yourself!). It's one of the most-loved and nostalgic perfumes around.

7. Byredo Blanche

Now, I'd usually advise against blind-buying luxury fragrances, especially as it's a bigger risk to invest in a bottle of perfume that you may not like. But if I had to choose one, it would be Byredo Blanche. It's a clean-smelling scent that is unfussy, uncomplicated and unproblematic. And with it being Byredo, it's effortless and luxurious all at once. This is the type of fragrance that lends itself just as well to wear to the office as to Sunday brunch. It's the type of perfume you can spritz on and go, like throwing on a white shirt or T-shirt that just goes with anything in your wardrobe.

8. M&S Apothecary Warmth

Marks & Spencer perfumes are so impressive at the moment. But one I'd consider the safest blind-buy is Apothecary Warmth. This went viral when it first launched for smelling very similar to a certain luxury sandalwood scent, and it was almost impossible to find in stock anywhere. If you like woody scents, then you'll appreciate the simplicity of this perfume, which puts sandalwood front and centre to create a creamy, smooth woody scent with a touch of spiciness. At £12 a bottle, don't expect the most long-lasting perfume, but for the price you won't mind needing to top-up every now and then.

9. Zara Energetically New York

Zara's perfumes are a safe bet for blind-buying. They typically range between £15-£36, so they won't make your bank account cry. But if I were pick one, I'd go for this. Energetically New York is part of Zara's collection created with legendary perfumer, Jo Malone CBE—and each one is as stunning as the next. This one feels like the first day of spring in New York, looking up at the glassy skyscrapers against a bright blue sky. It's fresh and airy, but impossibly cool and easy to wear.

Whether I like it or not, concealer is one of those makeup products I couldn't be without. As someone with chronically dark under-eyes, lots of redness and the occasional blemish, it's always the one product in my makeup bag that comes to the rescue whenever I need it. 1. Kosas Revealer Super Creamy + Brightening Concealer

This concealer is a beauty editor favourite, and for good reason. The serum-like formula glides onto the skin like butter, with a hydrating blend of hyaluronic acid and peptides. The formula is impressive, but it's the finish that blows me away every time. Smooth, soft and naturally dewy, it makes my under-eyes (and anywhere else I apply it) look instantly healthier, as if I actually sleep eight hours a night and drink two litres of water a day (because really, who has time for that?).

2. Nars Cosmetics Radiant Creamy Concealer

When I think of dewy concealers, this Nars one is always at the top of my list. It has a creamy consistency, delivers a glowy finish and visibly smooths the skin. Oh, and did I mention the light-diffusing technology? Yes, if you suffer from dark under-eye circles like me, you'll love this stuff. Plus, the thin doe-foot applicator makes it a dream to apply. If only I looked this bright-eyed and bushy-tailed naturally...

3. L'Oréal Paris True Match Radiant Serum Concealer

If you like a dewy finish, a serum-like concealer is probably your best bet, and this affordable L'Oréal Paris one ticks all the boxes. Infused with hyaluronic acid, it doesn't feel drying like other concealers, and it doesn't dry down to a totally matte finish, either. Instead, it makes light work of covering redness or dark circles and creates a naturally dewy, "your skin but better" effect that will earn you so many compliments.

4. Prada Reveal Concealer

This (relatively) new launch from Prada caught my attention the minute I got my hands on it. It's not actually advertised as a dewy concealer, but in my opinion, it fits the bill perfectly. It's not obviously glowy, but more of an "oh yeah, I just woke up with skin this good" kind of glow that will have people thinking you follow a very strict skincare routine. Peptides and squalane are to thank for the creamy consistency, whilst the buildable, blurring finish is all its own doing.

5. Victoria Beckham Beauty The Concealer Pen with TFC8

We all lead busy lives, and sometimes I want a concealer I can keep in my handbag to touch up my makeup whenever I'm on the go. Enter Victoria Beckham Beauty and Augustinus Bader. Yes, these two beauty powerhouses have joined forces to create a concealer so radiant that I've now developed a very expensive makeup addiction. Formulated with Augustinus Bader's iconic TFC8, this concealer improves the look of skin over time, but the dewy effect is instant. The pen format is so easy to swipe on and go, which is why I know this product won't be leaving my side as we enter the busiest period of the year.

6. Caia Dewy Drops Serum Concealer

Last but not least, let's talk about this Caia concealer. I'm going to be totally honest: I don't like the packaging, but the formula is so good that I'm willing to overlook it. My best advice is to apply it to the back of your hand and use a small brush to buff it into the skin. It's incredibly lightweight and glides onto the skin, with a nourishing, dewy finish. It's definitely on the lighter side of things in terms of coverage, but it does a great job of smoothing and evening out my complexion. If you like a weightless, radiant base, you need this product on your radar.

After developing a gel nail polish allergy a few years ago (a beauty editor's worst nightmare, I know, but I have found some good gel nail polish alternatives since), one thing I've really felt I've missed out on is chrome manis. The glazed nail trend hasn't gone anywhere, but to achieve the effect, it has to be used with cured gel polish for the chrome effect to work. Whilst there are tonnes of stunning shimmer nail polishes, achieving the glazed effect with nail polish just isn't quite the same, and applying the chrome powder on regular nail polish doesn't work too well in my experience.

Manucurist's Green Flash LED Kit has become one of my favourites for getting a longer-lasting manicure without gel polish (it even cures under an LED lamp), so when I saw that Manucurist also did its own chrome powders that are compatible with its Green Flash polishes, I immediately got my hands on some to try out for myself. And I wasn't disappointed.

Manucurist Glazed Powders

Coming in an array of shades, Manucurist's Glazed Powders (£9) work with its Green Flash nail polishes, which cure under Manucurist's LED lamp (£73). The result is a longer-lasting manicure without gel polish, remaining chip-free for far longer than standard nail polish.

How to Use It

I tried the White Glazed Powder, paired with Manucurist Hortencia (my favourite sheer pink polish from the brand). I applied two coats, curing in between, and then applied the powder on top with the sponge applicator.

After buffing it into the nail, I could see the chrome effect adhering to my nails, and I was so impressed with how it looked. I then used the Manucurist Dust Brush (£22) to sweep away the excess powder around the nail, and finished with the Manucurist Top Coat and cured again to seal it in.

I will say that applying the top coat did disturb the chrome slightly, but my workaround has been to apply a little more of the powder once the top coat has set, and it has held onto the glassy effect brilliantly. It has lasted really well and hasn't faded or disappeared after washing my hands—the glassy look remains.

My Verdict

There are a few different shades of the glazed powder to pick from depending on the look you're going for. The white one I used is perfect for a pearly effect, whereas Pink has more of a tint that would look beautiful over a sheer pink or milky polish. Golden has a shimmering champagne hue, and Blue has a stunning aqua-glazed finish that is really unique.

There are so many ways to use them, too, whether you wear them over a sheer polish for a glassy effect, or over a coloured opaque nail colour for a bolder effect. I'm desperate to try them on top of a soft French manicure next. Either way, I'm keeping all the shades on standby for all my chrome manicures from now on.

The 29-year-old singer-songwriter has just been announced as Tommy Hilfiger's latest global ambassador and the face of the brand's newest fragrance, Freedom. The launch marks a fresh chapter for Tommy Hilfiger fragrance, and we asked the star to share more about her exciting new venture.

Below, Camila talks go-to makeup products, her best beauty advice and, of course, her signature scent.

1. Which beauty product gives you the biggest mood boost?
I will say fragrance. Before I go to a big event, [I wear] Tommy Hilfiger Freedom. I don’t really wear perfume, so if I’m going out, it makes me feel like, "oooh, this is special."

2. If you could steal someone else’s makeup bag, whose would it be?
I think I’m going to say Dua Lipa!

3. You’ve got a spot. Are you team pop it or team leave it alone?
If it’s yellow, pop it!

4. You only have one product to use for the rest of your life—what is it?
Probably conditioner. I’m really into the Amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask right now.

5. What’s the best piece of beauty advice that you have ever received?
Drink water. It makes such a big difference to everything, which is so annoying because I hate having to go to the bathroom.

6. What's your signature fragrance?
Tommy Hilfiger Freedom, for sure. I love vanilla, so I love that about it. It’s fresh, and it’s not too intense!

7. Strong lip or a strong eye?
A strong eye. I’m definitely a strong-eye girl. I like a smoky eye, but I honestly do it less and less. I’m into a more natural bronzy brown.

8. You’re having your nails done. What’s your go-to colour?
I do a nude with chrome on top.

9. What's your favourite lipstick colour?
I like the Mary Phillips lip liner. I like anything close to my natural lip colour. I love a lip tint. I love the Sacheu one.

10. Candles, reed diffusers or nothing at all?
Candles. I like the Diptyque ones.

11. Name one beauty product that is always in your handbag
Probably a lip liner and the Gisou lip oil. I like to have a little bit of a gloss or an oil.

12. Are you team dewy or matte?
Dewy all the way.

13. The greatest drugstore product for under £10?
Cheap mascara! It's better sometimes.

14. Describe your brows in one word
Healing. The more I don’t do anything to them, the more they’re actually growing. I had spots that weren’t growing. I’m not touching them, and they’re growing in the places they weren’t! I like a more unkempt brow to brush up; I think it gives a youthful, wild look that I like.

15. What beauty rule do you always break?
I’ve realised that trends that look good on other people don’t [always] look good on me, and I think it’s good to be aware of that. I don’t know if that’s a beauty rule that I break, but it’s something that I’ve realised. Just do what works for your face!

16. Which celebrity’s hair would you love to steal?
I would steal Rosalía’s hair because, to my knowledge, she is someone who has gorgeous hair and doesn’t have any extensions, and that’s really rare in our industry.

17. Best beauty hack?
Patrick Ta is a really great friend of mine; I love him so much. I’ve learned a lot from him; I’ve learned about how important it is to really moisturise your face right before you do your makeup.

My hair routine has become significantly less complicated since I cut my hair into a bob. Gone are the days of spending ages blow-drying and styling my hair or reaching for my curling wand to add some shape and movement. The beauty of a shorter style is that I can apply a couple of products and leave it to air-dry. However, there is one thing I do still need to do: add texture.

My hair is naturally very straight, and while I love the sleek, blunt look of a freshly cut bob on others, I personally prefer mine to have a little more movement. I don't necessarily want big, bouncy waves or an overly styled finish—I just want that slightly undone texture that stops my hair from looking too flat and, dare I say it, a bit boring.

As a beauty editor, I've tried my fair share of texturising sprays, mousses, and styling creams over the years, but finding something that gives my hair body without making it feel stiff, sticky, or greasy is harder than you might think. This is especially true now that I'm not regularly using heat tools. A lot of volumising products are designed to work alongside a blow-dry, which is great if you have the time and patience, but not so helpful when your entire styling routine consists of roughly two minutes spent in front of the bathroom mirror.

My Experience

More than just a styling cream, the hybrid formula is designed to plump and fortify each strand for fuller, thicker-looking hair with lasting volume and lift. It also helps to strengthen and protect the hair fibre, whilst offering heat and humidity protection to help keep frizz at bay, so it's a real multitasker. Plus, although it's suitable for all hair types, the formula is particularly beneficial for fine, fragile, colour-treated, or damaged hair.

For me, though, the biggest selling point is just how easy it is to use. After washing my hair, I simply run a small amount through my towel-dried lengths and leave my hair to dry naturally. That's it. There's no blow-drying required, no complicated styling technique and absolutely no need for heat tools.

The cream itself is incredibly lightweight and almost gel-textured, which is important for my hair as anything too rich can quickly make it look flat. Instead of coating my hair or weighing it down, it gives my naturally straight lengths a little more grip and movement. Once dry, my bob looks fuller and more textured, but still feels silky-soft and touchable.

I've also found that it's a great option if, like me, you don't want that obvious feeling of product in your hair. There's no crispiness, stickiness or greasiness, and it doesn't leave my hair looking overly styled. Instead, it gives me the kind of effortless, slightly undone texture that I would usually rely on heat styling (or the skilled hands of a hairstylist) to achieve.

If you've been reading Who What Wear's beauty pages for some time, you'll know I don't often shout about the brilliance of one product. The truth is, I'm a tough critic. I try hundreds of new beauty products every year, and for the most part, I'm a creature of habit—I stick to classic products I trust wholeheartedly. Now and again, though, I come across a lesser-known, underrated product that I cling onto for dear life—and that is exactly what happened when I first tried Three Warriors Hydrabronze Face Tan Drops a couple of years ago.

I've long understood the power of facial tanning drops, but I'm too lazy to faff around applying them. I've tried almost every fake tan that has ever come my way, and when it comes to formulas for the face, I'm beyond picky. I have to be able to apply them every day without fear of turning orange or overdoing it. They need to work with my existing skincare routine and not add another step. They need to be so well formulated that I never need to worry about streaks and patches. And above all, they need to be so convincing in their bronzy finish that people regularly compliment my glow. And trust me when I say these drops do all of that.

In fact, I'd argue that there is no face tan out there that meets my strict criteria—Three Warriors Hydrabronze is the only one. What makes it so good? Indulge me for a moment whilst I reel off the list. For starters, I want to talk about the shade. In the summer, I personally use two drops of medium-dark mixed into my serum every single day. In the winter, I use four drops of light-medium. The intensity of the tan is fully customisable; want more glow, apply more drops. Plus, the sheer nature of the product means it proves a standout facial tan for dark skin.

And whilst all of this is no doubt great, the thing that makes this product so special is the shade of tan. Unlike so many others, it's not orange or intensely golden. Instead, it has that deep brown tone that mimics a real-life tan better than any other tanning product I've ever used.

Then, we get onto the formula. Containing hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, glycerin and an array of antioxidant-rich ingredients, this tan is the closest thing to legitimate skincare I've ever tried. I know lots of tan brands claim that their formulas are skincare-infused, but this product really delivers. It leaves skin radiant, bouncy and as though it's glowing from within. This, combined with the shade of tan itself, means I find myself batting off compliments about how glowing I look basically every day. And I am not exaggerating.

In fact, you can ask any of my Who What Wear colleagues, and they will attest to the fact that my ability to maintain a tan on my face year-round has become the talk of the office. I have converted no fewer than six of my equally-as-hard-to-impress editors to Three Warriors Hydrabronze, and they too have never looked back (including editor-in-chief Jane McFarland, who I regularly see sneaking out of the beauty cupboard clutching a bottle or two).

The truth is, I have spent well over a decade testing and trialling some of the best facial tans out there in a bid to find the magic formula—and I found it with these. I feel so passionately about the beauty of these tanning drops that I will put my hands up and say that, yes, for the most part I've been gatekeeping them. Sure, they feature regularly in my monthly Empties Edit, but honestly? I'd rather they remained somewhat under the radar so that my tan looks forever better than everyone else's. Selfish? Me? Never.

A new season has arrived, and with it, I'm currently saving so much autumn nail trend inspo from my feeds at the moment. Come autumn, I'm usually drawn to those deep burgundy nail shades and chocolatey browns, but right now, nothing appeals to me more than an autumn French tip manicure.

Animal print nails have been trending in recent months, and they're not going anywhere for autumn. If an all-over leopard or zebra feels like too much, then focusing it just on the tips of your nails makes it a more minimal way to dip a toe into the trend. Whether you go for leopard, tiger or zebra, it's time to embrace your wild side.

3. Double French

Double French tips have been cropping up all over my feeds this month, and it's such a fun way to switch up your standard French manicure. There are endless colour combinations to try. Brown and blue would make for a cool autumn French manicure, but I also love this pink and red combo. Opt for a fine-tipped nail art brush or a French manicure nail stamper to achieve those perfectly crisp lines.

4. Olive French

I'm completely obsessed with these olive French tips, which I've screenshotted to replicate for my next manicure. The muted green feels perfect for autumn and is a great shade to go for if you want a colourful French tip. Pair with a milky pink base and a glossy top coat, and you're good to go.

5. Soft French

The soft French isn't dying down yet, and it's the perfect minimalistic manicure to try if you love a "your nails, but better" look. Choose a sheer pink for the base and a milky, off-white hue to brighten the tips whilst remaining totally natural-looking.

One look on Instagram and you'll notice the likes of Hailey Bieber, Sadie Sink and Kaia Gerber all sporting this autumn's biggest looks, from high-shine lip glosses to blurred finishes and grungy '90s lip colour shades. But how can we get the look at home?

1. Blurred Lines

I love a sharp lip liner look as much as the next person, but this autumn is all about blurred finishes. "Lip edges will be blurred and diffused, creating softness and a romantic finish, stepping away from structure," explains Brayne. "Textures will be really lightweight, balmy, hydrating and super comfortable. The Hourglass Phantom Blur Balm is a perfect choice to create that blurred effect. As a beauty editor who is also into all things health and wellness (prior to my current role in beauty, I also worked as a health journalist earlier in my career), PEMF mats have quietly been cropping up all over my feeds of late. If this is your first time hearing about PEMF mats, then you're not alone. I've just begun seeing them in boutique gyms and wellness clubs, luxury London spas, and as part of treatments in skincare and aesthetic clinics, but I have so many questions about what they are. As health and beauty-adjacent devices such as LED therapy become more popular alongside the rise of "longevity" in the health and wellness space, I wondered whether PEMF mats could become the next big wellness tool, or even a skin tool, too.

I took this as a sign to investigate PEMF technology and what its possible benefits are. So, I spoke to Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP, aesthetics doctor and owner of The Aesthetics Doctor, for the lowdown on the research and what we ought to know before taking the plunge. With many PEMF mats costing upwards of £1,000, I needed to know if this was really a worthwhile investment, or just a very expensive lie-down. So, I also rallied our scrupulous beauty team to put some of the most popular PEMF mats to the test first-hand for two entire months to get their verdict too. What is PEMF?

"PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. It uses a device to generate electromagnetic fields that are delivered to the body in pulses," explains Dr Ahmed. "These changing magnetic fields can induce very small electrical currents within tissues, which may influence cellular signalling and processes involved in pain, inflammation and tissue repair," he says. "PEMF itself isn’t new; forms of electromagnetic stimulation have been used medically for decades, including in certain bone-healing applications. What is newer is the wellness trend of incorporating lower-intensity PEMF technology into mats designed for people to lie on at home."

What Are the Benefits of PEMF?

"The area with the most promising evidence is musculoskeletal health, particularly pain and stiffness. Research has suggested potential benefits for conditions such as osteoarthritis and some forms of musculoskeletal pain, although the results aren’t consistent across every study," says Dr Ahmed.

"Some users also report feeling more relaxed or sleeping better after using a PEMF mat. However, I would distinguish those subjective wellness benefits from outcomes that have been convincingly demonstrated in clinical trials," he says. "Claims that PEMF mats can dramatically improve sleep, boost energy, 'detox' the body, accelerate metabolism or provide broad anti-ageing benefits currently go beyond the strength of the evidence."

What Does PEMF Research Say?

"I would describe the evidence as promising in some areas, but not definitive," says Dr Ahmed. "There have been multiple randomised trials and systematic reviews looking at PEMF, particularly for osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Some meta-analyses have found improvements in pain, stiffness and physical function. However, there is a major caveat: studies use very different devices, frequencies, intensities, treatment durations and protocols. An umbrella review found the strongest agreement around short-term pain reduction in osteoarthritis, but also highlighted generally small studies, heterogeneous treatment protocols and limitations in study quality," he says.

"More recent evidence illustrates that uncertainty nicely. A 2026 meta-analysis of knee osteoarthritis trials found some improvements at particular time points, but not consistent improvements across all pain and functional measures, and noted that some statistically significant changes might not translate into a meaningful difference for patients. So there is genuine science behind PEMF, but I wouldn’t present it as a cure-all," he adds.

How Effective Is At-Home PEMF?

"This is where consumers need to be particularly careful," Dr Ahmed tells me. "Evidence for PEMF as a therapeutic modality isn’t automatically evidence for every PEMF mat available online. Devices can vary enormously in their magnetic field strength, pulse frequency and waveform, and those parameters may influence biological effects. Clinical studies generally evaluate a specific device and treatment protocol, whereas an at-home mat may operate quite differently," he says.

"I would therefore regard a home PEMF mat as a potential adjunct to wellbeing or conventional treatment, rather than a replacement for evidence-based medical care, physiotherapy, exercise, medication or appropriate investigation of persistent pain. If someone enjoys using one and feels it helps with relaxation, recovery or discomfort, that’s reasonable, but I would be cautious about spending thousands of pounds based on claims that aren’t supported by studies of that particular device," he says.

What to Look for in a PEMF Mat

"The first thing I’d look for is transparency. The manufacturer should clearly state the device’s intensity, frequency range and recommended treatment protocol rather than simply using vague terms such as 'cellular healing' or 'detoxification'," says Dr Ahmed.

"I would also look for appropriate UK regulatory compliance and good safety information, as well as evidence specifically relating to the device or comparable parameters. Be particularly sceptical of companies using research on medical PEMF equipment to imply that their consumer mat has been clinically proven when the actual product hasn’t been studied, he adds. "Consumers should also check the warranty, returns policy and aftercare. These products can be expensive, and a higher price doesn’t necessarily mean a stronger evidence base."

Currentbody Wellness Infrared PEMF Mat

When the Currentbody PEMF mat arrived at my door, the poor postman was huffing and puffing. As it turns out, PEMF mats (or, at least this one) are really quite heavy. I live in a maisonette, so I needed a second pair of hands to get this upstairs, where it permanently lived in my bedroom during the two-month testing period. The reason for its significant weight is that the base of the mat is filled with crystals, specifically amethyst and obsidian stones. Supposedly, amethyst promotes relaxation, whilst obsidian retains heat to enhance recovery. The mat incorporates both PEMF and infrared technology, so you can benefit from both electromagnetic technology and the warming heat of infrared.

You can customise the strength of the PEMF as well as the infrared heat via the remote, and set the duration of your treatment, which can be anywhere between one and nine hours. I first used this during the summer heatwaves, so I was reluctant to stay on it for too long, but I have begun testing it more as the weather has cooled down. As for the PEMF tech, you can't really feel this. However, CurrentBody supplies you with a small vial that contains a magnet inside, which, when you hold it over the mat, causes the metal disc to frantically jump around, so you know the PEMF is active.

The mat itself is full-length, and at 5ft 6 in, my full body fit comfortably on the mat (although if you're very tall, your lower legs might reach past the end of the mat. I found lying down on it comfortable, and I usually doubled up my sessions with my LED mask or some gentle stretching. I'll admit: I did find it hard to find time to use this, so I mostly stuck to a half-hour treatment before bed a couple of times a week.

On the nights I used this, I found my sleep was more restful. I wear an Oura ring, and I could visibly see how it helped my body reach a 'restored' state during my treatments, which impacted my sleep quality, too. The warming infrared felt amazing, particularly on sore muscles post-workout. I can't say I really felt the PEMF during use, but I did feel rested. I even fell asleep during some of the sessions. Curiously, my dog always seemed drawn to the mat whenever I turned it on. Maybe he had a primal sense of the restorative effects? Maybe he just had FOMO? Who knows.

Overall, I've enjoyed adding this into my routine. If you're someone who enjoys a spa day or saunas, but don't have the time to go regularly, then this is a nice alternative to have at home. I can't say it particularly helped with pain (I'd always enlist the help of a professional as a first port of call), but it did enable me to experience some restorative relaxation and hopefully lower my cortisol levels. Would I buy it myself? I wouldn't be willing to pay for it, to be totally honest. I also found that it took up a lot of space in my small bedroom, and because it's so heavy, it was difficult to put away and get back out again, which was a blocker for me actually using it as regularly as I'd like. However, if you have the extra space and cash to splash, then this makes for a great addition to your routine to help with relaxation, stress and post-workout recovery. I should also add that I love my CurrentBody LED mask and the tech behind it, so if there's a brand I'd trust to buy a PEMF mat from, I wouldn't hesitate to go to the brand for this too.

Bon Charge Infrared PEMF Mat Demi

"I'm the first person to admit I love a bit of wellness woo-woo from time to time, particularly when it doesn't require any hard work," says beauty director Shannon Lawlor. "That being said, when a wellness device costs hundreds of pounds and involves crystals, I put my journalist head back on and become a sceptic. And I'm not going to lie, I entered this testing process with a heavy dose of scepticism.

"I really struggle to sleep and struggle relentlessly with stress and bodily tension, aches and pains, so in theory, a PEMF speaks to me. But I want to address the red flag that I personally wasn't able to overcome, and that is the addition of crystals. I believe fervently that everyone has the right to be into what they're into and believe what they believe, but the thing that sits uneasily with me in this case is the way in which the presence of the crystals sits in a more science-led space with PEMF. Although various PEMF mats contain different crystals with different claims, I won't be touching on them today, as I don't want to blur the lines between proven clinical technology and largely unproven wellness claims. Plus, although this mat is a more budget-friendly option, PEMF mats are expensive, and I can't help but feel as though a huge chunk of the cost could be shaved off if the things weren't jam-packed with what seems to be thousands of crystals.

"Now I've got that off my chest; onto the positives. My gosh, this gadget is relaxing. 15 minutes of lying on the mat before bed had me unwound and feeling positively ready for sleep. Did I notice a particular improvement in my sleep long-term? Not massively, but it definitely helped my brain get into a sleepier mood. The mat itself is quite complex to work with, so I'd recommend reading the instructions thoroughly. There are various settings for various results, although I'll admit I didn't notice much of a difference in any of them.

"I'm going to be brutally honest here: the PEMF element is incredibly hard to judge because you don't feel anything. And it's even harder to review when you include the heating element—the relaxation that the heat brings makes it impossible to gauge PEMF success (whether placebo or not). Am I more relaxed because of the magnetic field or because I spent 15-20minutes lying on a wonderfully warm mat and switching off my brain before climbing into bed? The jury is also out on the power of the red lights, particularly as you are instructed to wear loose-fitting clothes on the mat, so the LED never actually meets skin.

"Regardless of all of my hang-ups, I've enjoyed using the Bon Charge PEMF Mat Demi. It has been a lovely addition to my pre-bed routine. Would I spend £600 of my hard-earned cash on it? Not unless I could do so without a second thought or a shred of stress."

Higherdose Infrared PEMF Go Mat

"When I first received this mat, I was surprised by how compact and lightweight it was," says deputy beauty editor Grace Lindsay. "I know other PEMF mats can be really heavy, and whilst this is weighty, it’s relatively easy to move around in my flat. Plus, it’s so easy to use. As someone totally new to PEMF mats, I wasn’t sure how it would work, but this one comes with a detailed manual, including a breakdown of all the different temperatures and wavelengths and what they can help with. All you do is attach the control panel to the mat, plug it in, use the buttons to select your wavelength and temperature, and then wait a little while for it to heat up.

"I liked using it before bed, after I had been to the gym, as I personally found the infrared heat really relaxing. I felt like it helped with any tense muscles, especially in my shoulders and back, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day. That said, I’m yet to notice if the PEMF technology has made a huge difference to how I feel, but perhaps I need to test it for a little longer.

"It goes without saying that this is an incredibly expensive piece of kit. If, like me, you love a sauna or steam room and want to bring that relaxing heat element into your own home, I really recommend it; however, if you’re looking for something specifically for post-workout muscle recovery or even serious muscle pain, you might be better off consulting an expert and seeing what they recommend before investing. It might not be for everyone, but I can certainly see myself using this every single night."

Who Should Avoid PEMF?

"The biggest concern is people with implanted electronic medical devices, such as pacemakers, implantable defibrillators or some neurostimulators, because electromagnetic fields can potentially interfere with these devices. FDA documentation on magnetic-field technologies specifically highlights this potential interaction," says Dr Ahmed.

"People with implanted metal or other medical devices should check compatibility with both their clinician and the device manufacturer before using a PEMF mat. I’d also advise anyone who is pregnant, has a significant medical condition, has recently undergone surgery, or is receiving treatment for cancer to speak to their doctor before using one, because safety data may be limited for these groups," he says.

"Ultimately, a PEMF mat should be viewed as a wellness or complementary tool rather than a substitute for medical assessment. If someone has persistent or unexplained pain, the priority should be establishing why they’re experiencing it rather than simply treating the symptom at home," he adds.

You'll also know that volumising hair products are a must to achieve said va-va-voom. While there are plenty of brilliant volume sprays on the market (Larry King Ride or Die, I'm looking at you), my secret weapon has always been volumising powder. 1. Moroccanoil Texture & Volume Powder

Lightweight, this worked brilliantly at building volume and texture, and I love that I can layer it up without my hair feeling stiff or crunchy. It gave my roots a noticeable boost while the added argan oil helped to nourish strands, alongside a 3D mineral blend that gives real fullness. And, of course, there's that signature Moroccanoil scent, which leaves hair smelling every bit as gorgeous as it looks.

2. Kevin Murphy Powder Puff

If your scalp's microbiome is out of balance, it can lead to sensitivity and dryness, meaning the last thing you want to do is douse it in styling products. Luckily, I found this formula to be super scalp-friendly while still delivering plenty of volume. Best of all, it works beautifully on both damp and dry roots, so you can use it to build volume from the get-go or give your hair a much-needed lift between washes.

3. VioletteFR Frange Puff

If you don't like getting your hands all up in your roots, the powder brush means you don't have to. I love how it instantly refreshes tired, oily strands, stopping them from sticking to my scalp while adding a good dose of volume in the process.

It's been an absolute godsend after the gym when I'm heading straight out, and did me a solid after stepping off a long-haul flight, too. And then there's the scent, which is fresh and addictive.

4. Shrine Root Powder

This works wonders at creating serious volume that lasts for hours and hours. It has a lovely matte quality, too, and while the powder itself feels finely milled, there's enough oomph to add texture as well as lift. I also found it easy to brush out and restyle my hair the following day, without any stubborn powdery residue left behind. For its price point, I was seriously impressed.

5. Rahua Dry Shampoo

I'm a big fan of Rahua in general, not only because they source some of the best botanicals and natural ingredients, but because the brand has a genuinely impressive commitment to the environment. Its founders' work with Indigenous Amazonian communities, which has helped protect more than 3.2 million acres of rainforest, while profits go towards conservation and philanthropy.

As for the product, this won me over for its application alone. It dispenses as an ultra-fine mist of powder that instantly absorbs excess oil and gives roots a serious lift, without that heavy, gritty Its formula is also impressively pared back, containing just five ingredients.

6. Oribe Swept Up Volume Powder Spray

If you're partial to an updo, then look no further. This gives the roots instant lift while adding the kind of texture and grip that makes hair much easier to work with. Rather than silky strands slipping straight out of a ponytail, bun or updo, it gives them a little more hold and traction, helping styles stay put. I also love it for creating that fuller, slightly undone finish. A few spritzes through the roots give my hair enough body to tease and shape, while the powder adds texture without making everything feel stiff or sticky. It's especially handy if, like me, your fine hair tends to fall flat when you're trying to create volume at the crown.

What Is a Volumising Hair Powder?

The clue is the name, but as Andreas Wild, stylist at Larry King Notting Hill, explains in more detail, "Volumising hair powder is a styling product that you apply directly to the roots to give the hair extra lift and texture. It adds a little more grit to the roots, which helps create volume, particularly when the hair is very soft or tends to fall flat."

He also adds that it’s a great way to refresh your hair, "on day two, and can make finer or thinner hair look fuller."

Is Volumising Powder Good for Your Hair?

This is still a myth that tends to permeate, but Wild explains that volumising powder isn’t bad for your hair. However, he adds, "It’s important to wash it out regularly because it adds texture and sits at the roots; using too much or continually layering it onto unwashed hair can lead to product build-up. You may also find the hair becomes difficult to brush through if there’s too much product in it."

Is Volumising Spray or Powder Better?

"I think it really comes down to personal preference and the finish you’re looking for," says Wild. "Powder gives the hair more grit, texture and grip, so it’s particularly good if you want to create lots of lift at the roots or your hair is very soft."

I've used a lot of root powders over the years, so I was pretty ruthless when it came to deciding which ones made the cut. I sought out formulas that offered serious volume without compromising on how my hair and scalp felt, and looked at everything from application and texture to how easily they brushed out and whether the volume actually lasted. “Animal print has that rare combination of being instantly recognisable, but endlessly adaptable,” explains celebrity and session manicurist Ami Streets. “Leopard, zebra, tortoiseshell and snakeskin can all be reinterpreted through colour, scale, placement and finish, and they work surprisingly well on nails because the patterns are naturally imperfect.” If you’re not sure where to start, then Streets points out that leopard makes for an obvious choice and a timeless favourite, but for autumn/winter 2026 nails she’s most excited about striped prints. “Zebra and tiger-inspired manicures feel a little more contemporary and fashion-forward this season, and there are so many ways to interpret them—from classic monochrome zebra to richer, more autumnal tiger tones,” Streets explains.

And if you’re feeling a bit nervous, Streets suggests starting small. “Try an animal-print French tip or even just a few tiny spots in your print of choice layered over a neutral sheer nude or milky base,” she suggests. Choosing a tonal colour palette, think neutral shades like chocolate browns and caramels rather than high-contrast shades, can also make the trend feel more wearable.

The beauty community has always been divided when it comes to the topic of eye cream. These little pots and tubes promise wonders after all, claiming to de-puff, as well as reduce dark circles and boost moisture. I too was skeptical, but after years of rigorous testing and bending the ear of many dermatologists, I've been sold on their merits for years. That is, with a caveat: not all eye creams are made alike. To get the most bang for your buck, you need to select the right one based on your concerns, and my biggest concern happens to be hollowness.

It's a tricky one to treat. As consultant dermatologist Dr Zainab Laftah tells me, hollowness under the eyes is usually down to a mix of genetics, bone structure and the natural ageing process, meaning there's only so much that topical creams can do. However, if you're not keen on more intensive measures, then the expert explains that there are a number of products that actually help stimulate collagen production and improve firmness and the overall look of your delicate under-eye area.

Ahead, a breakdown of what exactly causes under-eye hollowing and the very best products on the market to treat it.

What Causes Hollow Under Eyes?

As Dr Laftah explains, hollowing can be caused by a mix of ageing, genetics and your unique bone structure. "Some people are born with deeper-set eyes or facial features that naturally create a more noticeable under-eye hollow," she says.

Plus, as we age, the bone around the eye socket and upper cheek gradually remodels, while the fat that cushions the area can shrink or shift, and the supporting ligaments become looser. "At the same time, declining collagen and elastin levels cause the skin to become thinner and more lax," she adds. "Together, these changes reduce support beneath the eyes, making hollows and shadows more noticeable and the eye area appear darker or more tired."

How to Treat Hollow Under Eyes

The under-eye area has complex anatomy, so treatment depends on the cause and severity of the hollowness, and should be tailored to the individual. For suitable patients, Dr Laftah advises that hyaluronic acid dermal filler can be carefully placed to restore volume and provide greater support. "However, filler is not appropriate for everyone, particularly those with marked skin laxity, prominent under-eye bags or swelling, as it can sometimes make these concerns more noticeable." In certain cases, fat transfer or lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) may be an option.

What to Look for in an Eye Cream

While products can improve the quality and appearance of the skin under the eyes, they cannot replace lost volume or correct the underlying bone, fat and ligament changes that cause hollowness, explains the expert.

That said, retinoids can stimulate collagen production and improve fine lines and skin texture, while vitamin C may help address signs of photo-damage. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen also helps prevent further UV-related collagen and elastin damage. Together, these ingredients can help the under-eye area look smoother and healthier—but opt for gentle, fragrance-free formulas, as the skin here is particularly sensitive. Plus, introduce active ingredients gradually to minimise irritation.

1. Medik8 Crystal Retinal Ceramide Eye 3

I've never met a Medik8 product I haven't loved, and the Crystal Retinal Ceramide Eye Cream is no exception. It contains retinal, glycerin, squalane and ceramides, all of which are essential for improving the appearance of under-eye areas—especially for those who have hollowing, as it can worsen the look of dark circles and accentuate puffiness. Plus, thanks to time-release technology, it's gentle enough for retinal newbies, yet clinically proven to soften crow's feet and expression lines. Hyaluronic acid filling spheres help combat dryness, dullness and dehydration, leaving the area looking plumped all day long.

2. Obagi Elastiderm Advanced Filler Concentrate

This clever treatment was inspired by needle-based procedures, like filler and Botox, and is clinically proven to fill and soften lines and wrinkles starting from the first application. You don't need to limit it to the eye area; it's also designed to be used all over the face, including the forehead and around the lips, too. Maximum results are seen eight hours after you use it, and over time, I have seen an improvement in the quality and smoothness of the skin in this delicate area. Plus, the precision-tip applicator makes it easy to apply to the smaller contours of the face.

3. Augustinus Bader The Rich Eye Cream

The key is in the name here: this eye cream by Augustinus Bader is incredibly rich and luxurious. Of course, it is on the luxury end, considering its price, but it is powered by TFC8—the brand's proprietary blend, backed by three decades of research and clinical study. The velvety formula is packed with peptides, amino acids and vitamins to help the skin regenerate. A perennial pennywort extract also protects against sun damage, as well as leaves the skin intensely hydrated and firmer-looking after just one use. It's the one to go to if moisture and fullness are your main aim.

4. iS Clinical GeneXC Firming Eye Gel

One of the issues with hollowing under the eyes is that it can make the area look darker overall. This fast-acting gel helps combat that with a powerful blend of vitamin C and peptides, which are supported with low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid to plump and palmitoyl tripeptide-5 to support collagen production. It works very fast; my under-eyes looked brighter in just two weeks—but go easy if you have sensitive eyes; this can tingle and may not work for very sensitive skin. I found I had to build up my tolerance by using a small amount initially.

5. L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Renew Eye Cream

If you're looking for a hard-working eye cream on a budget, you can't go wrong here. This targets the tear trough specifically; L’Oréal's clinical studies found that this delicate area looked 10 per cent less hollow after sustained use. It also contains caffeine to help de-puff, while sodium hyaluronate, which is effective at holding water within the skin, leaves the area looking instantly fuller.

6. La Mer The Rejuvenating Eye Cream

If you're willing to splurge, La Mer's RPC-6 complex contains bio-filling algae to “micro-plump” and smooth the orbital area. In its clinical tests, respondents found a nine per cent improvement in the appearance of the tear trough after 12 weeks, as well as a 13 per cent improvement in plumpness. I also noticed considerable lift after sustained use, and the thick, cushiony texture, infused with glycerin and silicones, left everything feeling so hydrated and cushioned.

7. Clarins Total Eye Lift

If you want to treat hollowness, you need an eye cream that helps with lift. This gel-cream promises results in just 60 seconds; the skin immediately looks tighter, and 80 per cent of women in Clarins' study said their eye contour looked visibly lifted and open. The ingredients are worth shouting about, too: there's the natural retinol alternative, organic harungana, as well as smoothing plant extracts like caffeine and cassia flower. They're all gentle enough for those with sensitive eyes, too.

8. Shiseido Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Eye Cream

This velvety eye cream fulfils its uplifting claims thanks to the addition of retinol, alongside the brand's SafflowerRED technology, which is designed to target loss the laxity that comes with collagen loss. It's a great all-rounder, with caffeine, and plenty of hydrators, which also target sagging and eye bags, so if that's a concern, this is a great option. I also love the metal sculpting massage tool, which adds a cooling, sensorial touch.

9. La Prairie Skin Caviar Eye Lift

If you truly want to push the boat out, La Prairie's Skin Caviar Eye Lift is a 360-degree approach to under-eye hollowness. It lifts, firms and leaves the area looking considerably fuller after application. This watery, lightweight formula is infused with caviar extract, peptides, lipids and marine DNA, while glycerin and sodium hyaluronate hydrate and plump. In clinical studies, the brand found that 77 per cent of women noticed a lifting effect after eight weeks. Of course, it's incredibly expensive, but if you prefer a lightweight formula packed with powerhouse ingredients and almost-instant results, this may be worth it.

I'm a beauty editor who has a particular infatuation with candles. If I had to choose one dessert-island essential, it would be a lip liner.
