"It's really impossible to speak for every other woman in the fashion industry, of course, but they are a few items I've spotted frequently on many," Webb confided.

Every fashion girl has a favourite perfume! I usually gravitate toward more-masculine scents.

We all need that perfect cosy trench coat for travel. In my opinion, a longer version is better because there are multiple ways to style it.

We need a go-to third piece like a cashmere sweater, cape, or slouchy blazer for cold days in the office, studio, or aeroplane.

Personally, I love mine for days when I just look exhausted! I stock up on different frame options for diversity.

Nice but functional luggage is important because we spend a lot of time travelling. Luggage that's physically attractive is great, but more importantly, it needs to function properly.

Ah, every woman's constant plea: that she may own and wear a pair of high heels that don't absolutely murder her feet and make her life miserable. We've done our best to help provide you with tips to wearing high heels without pain, but sometimes an expert must be brought in.

We asked our resident stylist Marissa Webb to share her pro tips for making heels as comfortable as they can be, and she had some dynamite wisdom to disperse. 

"Your favourite heels might look great, but if you can't walk in them, it really takes all the fun and beauty out of them," Webb astutely observes. "Some tricks I've learned over time have saved me on countless occasions."

If you have to choose between a pair that's slightly snug or slightly loose, go with loose; you can always pad them, but hoping they will stretch out usually ends in disappointment.

Every heel doesn't need to be 4-plus inches tall. I love a kitten heel, and they're almost like wearing flats; they don't put as much pressure on the ball of your foot, which is often the source of discomfort.

Take breaks from pointed-toe heels. Rotate between a round toe, open toe, and pointed toe. Sure, pointy might look great, but it certainly won't help your toes. Especially the poor pinky!

Even if you think you're in your most comfortable heels, be prepared if it's going to be a long day or night. A combination of padding the footbed and cotton balls stuffed in the toes is my ultimate solution.

My favourite trick is cotton balls. I figured this out at a hotel one night, when I couldn't find heel pads and one my right shoe kept flopping off. Stuff the cotton balls into the toe of your shoe until the fit is right. Keep a few extra in your purse for just such an occasion.

No matter what else you do, do not wait to break in your brand new heels at that special event you picked them out for. You haven't developed a relationship with the shoes yet, and you don't want to spoil the night by finding out too late that your heels have a mean side. Wear them at least once before the event so you know how to prep them properly.

There seems to be a consensus among members of the fashion community that New York girls just do it better. Paris might still be the reigning fashion capital of the world, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi about the way NYC gals dress.

To help us capture that essence, we enlisted the help of Marissa Webb, our resident stylist and full-time New York City resident. We asked her: What is this magical formula NYC girls use to get dressed everyday?

"I don’t think there is a must-use 'formula,' so I use that term loosely," Webb says. "However, I do think having a few styling tricks up our sleeves helps us New York gals pull it together every day."

Have your accessories ready to go! Always have accessories top of mind for days when you need to pump up your look and you don’t have the luxury of time. They can quickly take a look from simple to fashion-forward."

Because the pace of New York doesn’t slow down, we city ladies probably give our shoes a lot more thought than one would consider to be normal. One trick is pairing comfortable shoes with something dressy, or the reverse: pair dressy heels with something casual on top.

Always think of opposites and contrast–an outfit usually looks more interesting with items that fall under different categories. Think long with short, dressy with casual, soft with hard, and masculine with feminine. This could be as simple as wearing a nicely tailored, straightforward suit and popping on a pair of dramatic chandelier earrings.

Know the proportions that work for you. Wearing heavy, slouchy layers on top? Style them over something slim on the bottom. If you're going slouchy and baggy on the bottom, pair it with something slim on top.

Have your third piece ready. New York City girls know you always need a third piece, even if it's 100 degrees out; once you walk into the office, you’re going to be freezing.

You should know when to go bold or go neutral with your makeup. My formula is one of opposites: If I’m wearing something bright and bold, I play down my makeup, and if I’m wearing neutral colours and need a pop, I’ll add a punched-up lip or eye.

Lastly, all New York girls know: when you're not sure what to wear and you're out of time, you can always rely on black or white.

Understand what is work appropriate for your industry, but find subtle ways to stand out and show your unique personality.

If we don't feel comfortable in our clothes, it really shows in the way we carry ourselves. Figure out what makes you feel extra confident, and stick to it.

Master the power suit! And don't put limitations on it; it doesn't have to be a boring black suit that you hate. You should love it and feel confident in it. Add your own interesting accents to make the look yours. 

Learn how to mask all the unattractive things we need to carry back and forth to work. (Those fabulous "bag spills" you see in magazines don't really exist.) Look for a fun, chic tote that adds to your look.

Learn how to pull it together quickly for the days when you're short on time. Think about the go-to items you know will always come to your rescue. Blazers are consistently my go-to; I toss them over almost anything for polish. 

Learn how to walk in heels! They might not be something you wear to work every day, but if a time comes when you need to dress up, it's a lot easier if you have already mastered the skill of walking in them.

Layering is a big thing in the world of the fashion elite—and it also happens to be one of the hardest skills to master, especially during the hot summer months. From one perspective, layering is a great way to stay cool, because you can remove layers as you see fit—but if you do it the wrong way, it's not a great look and you'll end up sweltering. 

To help us navigate the challenging world of summer layering, we recruited the help of a bona fide expert: our resident stylist Marissa Webb. Webb is very well-known in the fashion community for her top-notch layering skills, so she's the perfect person to tell us just how to do it.

"Layering isn’t as complicated as we often times think it is. There’s no real formula to it, or rules," Webb says. "You have to simply give it a try; but there are a few things to consider while styling with layers."

Usually it’s easiest if you think of the lightest layer first, but I also like to do the reverse. Try a cropped top or tank over your tunic or sweater.

Don’t put limitations on the items in your closet. A dress can easily convert to a top when styled with your favourite bottoms; a trench dress can easily morph into a lightweight jacket. Just like many things in life, our clothing has more to offer then we usually give it credit for.

One of my favourite and probably easiest tricks is to put items together of the same colour for a saturated, monochrome look. For example, try a navy T-shirt with a navy blazer and a navy trench.

Think in colour. Even pattern-mixing becomes second nature if you start looking at colour first; a black polka dot print pairs perfectly with black stripes, a red floral easily fits with a red geometric print. If you’re not a big fan of prints, try solid colours in varying shades.

Think proportion: if you’re wearing something skinny on the bottom, layer up easy on the top. If you're slouchy on the bottom, layer up with slim shapes on the top.

One of the biggest challenges we ladies face with summer style is taking our favourite casual daytime looks into the evening. When you're at the pool, the beach, or brunch in a caftan, hitting the bar after in the same outfit isn't always the best idea. (Read: Beachy babe can swiftly turn into beachy mess.)

"I think we all want to be comfortable during the summer heat but still look polished," Webb tells us. "I find that having a few key styling tricks is really helpful in pulling together a look that’s well balanced for day and night."

Structured handbags and dressy shoes paired with your favourite comfortable jeans give your comfortable look a more polished edge.

I love a classic T-shirt! I dress mine up by pairing them with lightweight wide-leg trousers or by layering a blazer on top. Adding something a bit more polished with something casual is a great way of dressing up your easy summer pieces.

Think maxi–maxi-length pants, skirts, and dresses. Toss it on and pair with your favourite heels or dressy flats, and maybe add a statement necklace to pump up these otherwise relaxed items.

Layers are key—not in your apparel, but in terms of what other items you can layer on top of your favourite cotton blouse and comfortable bottoms. Think down to your nail polish; often it's the little details that complete the look. Changing the accessory layer around your favourite comfortable clothes can transform a look. I rarely leave home without my bracelets, and I'm currently seeking more statement earrings to pair with my white T-shirts.

If there's a singular challenge to summer dressing that rises above them all, it's how to wear stylish looks that are casual enough to be seasonally on-trend—without looking sloppy. 

It can be especially tricky nowadays, when the undone look is very in. Our resident style expert, Banana Republic creative director Marissa Webb, tends to excel at achieving a perfectly polished casual summer look—so, naturally, we consulted her.

"You have to be able to adjust according to your lifestyle," Webb told us. "I'm in a business where I'm running around being very physical and the next minute in a serious meeting where I need to look polished. It gets a little tricky at times. Most importantly, keep the words contrast, contradiction, and opposites in mind when pulling together your casual yet polished look."

Toss a well-tailored blazer over your casual jeans and T-shirt to add polish to a casual outfit.

Create a simple formula that works for you. For example, if you know you want to wear comfortable denim, try to find something a bit dressier on the top. If you know you want to wear your favourite "get it done" T-shirt, pick something more tailored to wear over it.

I like the contrast of heels with casual bottoms. I'll often style my easy cargo pants, denim, or soft lounge pants with a heel.

Mix it up with something dressy and something casual, like a feminine lace blouse with cargo pants or denim. I find the contrast more interesting, and it's also a great way to not be over- or under-dressed.

Have fun with your accessories and don't underestimate them. Stack up your necklaces or bracelets with your favourite easy T-shirt for the right mix of polished casual.

Our resident stylist does borrowed-from-the-boys dressing so well—and you, dear reader, took notice. We've received a ton of questions centered around how to replicate Webb's signature style, so we decided to pick her brain on the matter. As it turns out, it's not as simple as tossing on a boyfriend blazer and going out the door.

"Borrowing from the boys doesn’t always mean literally wearing men's clothing," Webb says. "It's about contrast and proportions. However, I personally do not hesitate to shop in the boys’ section and borrow from my fiancé’s closet. Think of it as your options being doubled!"

The boyfriend shirt is an easy item to mix into your wardrobe, because the fit is a bit looser and easy. To pull it together, pair it with a skinny skirt or bottom for the juxtaposition of proportion. Then toss on a great pair of heels for that interesting contrast.

When styling the boyfriend blazer, it's not always about it just being oversize. It's also about the tailoring and the details. I often pair my “borrowed from the boys” blazer with feminine accessories, like heels or a scoop-neck T-shirt. Or I’ll add a belt to the natural waist to give it more shape.

Men's accessories are there for you to explore! I usually use them as an accent with more-feminine items from my closet. Ties and bow ties I’ll mix with a slim button-down or shift dress. Men's watches get mixed in with my other bracelets, and I actually prefer men's perfumes because they’re usually not as powdery and sweet.

Sometimes you just want that oversize cosy sweater. I wear mine all year round with skinny jeans, over a silk cami dress, or with shorts on a breezy beach. For me, in order not to look sloppy or like a big sack, it’s the play on contrast and shape that’s important. Mix in your feminine pieces, even if it’s just a bold lip for balance and to separate you from the boys.

Summer style is all about being light, airy, and unburdened by the layers (literal and metaphysical) that typically accompany fall fashion. As lovely as that is, it can still be a challenge to strike the balance of being just the right amount of casual while still remaining stylish.

I personally love comfortable airy dresses for hot summer days. I usually go for a woven dress over a knit dress, especually when I'm going for a more dressed-up look.

I love a great short suit as a modern update to the pantsuit for summer!

Printed lightweight pants or skirts paired with a crisp top can give just the right amount of ease (with polish!) for a dressed-up look that’s still comfortable during the summer heat. Try a maxi-length skirt or lightweight trouser paired with a comfortable top; the length can help to make it feel dressier and more elegant.

Accessories are a great way to add polish to a comfortable summer outfit. Grab a pair of heels in place of flats to pair with your lightweight summer dress, or add a statement necklace to your easy T-shirt or blouse. Keep the outfit casual, but layer up the jewellery, and don’t forget the toes and the lipstick! Often times it's the little details that have the most impact. "I consider accessories the icing on the cake," Webb says. "Even if you consider yourself a more conservative or classic dresser, accessories are where many woman are willing to be a little more daring. It's about taking accessories, thinking about them differently, and incorporating them into your wardrobe and personal style, but not taking them so literally."

Shoes are one of the items that can easily take your look from work to play, or from casual to dressy. This is where I would definitely invest in colour and pattern.

Yes, scarves all year round! There are many ways to utilise scarves. I've actually found some of my favourite scarves in the men's department. Think of other ways you can style them beyond the traditional "wrap around the neck." To add movement to your outfit, drape it around and let the two sides hang loosely down the front. I also love to layer scarves under blazers for an added touch of texture and dimension. Scarves are also a good way to incorporate colour and print into your look.

It's rare that I leave the house without my jewellery. Besides having sentimental value, jewellery is a great way to express your unique style. Jewellery can be season-less, but it's also one of those items you can update in an affordable way for each season. For example, I tend to gravitate towards more casual, bold-coloured jewellery during summer, like opaque, bright coloured bracelets and necklaces. I love to layer bright necklaces for a bold colour vibe, and I also love a strong statement necklace.

Belts are one of those items that I'm a little fickle on. Sometimes it's all about the belt, other times, belts can complicate the look. When I do wear belts, I tend to go for a wider style if I'm going to wear it at my true waist. I've also been known to double up on the belts, especially if they are thin and can be layered over each other. Sometimes, if I feel like I need a little extra graphics or texture in my outfit, I'll reach for a belt that isn't just classic black.

I gravitate towards statement earrings during the warmer seasons. They add a great finishing touch to the less layered, easy way of dressing during spring and summer. I like the contrast of a dramatic earring with that ease; most of us think of pulling these out for dressed-up occasions, but the juxtaposition is what I find more interesting.

Chances are that when it comes to prints, you'd classify yourself in one of two ways: pro or anti. You either outfit yourself statement-making florals, stripes, animal prints, and more, or you stick to solids at all costs. But, as it turns out, this all-or-nothing approach may not be the way to go.

"Prints are very personal but can really enhance your wardrobe," says our resident head stylist Marissa Webb. "Finding ones that fit your style personality isn't as hard as we often think!"

To that end, Webb shared with us the six must-have prints for every woman—even if you think of yourself a "solids-only" person. Keep scrolling to see the six prints you should have in your closet!

Whatever the size, a polka-dot print is a beloved classic. For example, a tiny dot can look timeless and elegant; it almost becomes a non-print that helps add texture to your wardrobe. For a playful moment, go big; or mix polka dots with stripes for a bit of whimsy.

A classic plaid or stripe is always a must. Try a vertical stripe if you're worried that horizontal isn't flattering for your figure. A gingham plaid in different sizes is a great classic, too—try it in an unexpected silhouette for a modern twist!

Black-and-white organic or floral prints are easy for most women to fit into their wardrobe—even if they are not traditionally floral-print gals.

Animal prints, especially leopard, could almost be considered a neutral: They'll never go out of style and they easily mix into almost any outfit. If you don't love it in your apparel, go for it in your accessories.

I love a bright mix of colours and patterns in dresses, skirts, and accessories—perfect for those times when you want to make a bold, fun statement.

In general, if you shy away from wearing prints, find them in your accessories—they're the perfect place to be daring. I think of them as the icing on the cake!

Many of us don't have the luxury of styling a great look every day. So have your go-to items—such as your favourite pants, tops, and shoes for the season—always ready. Then invest in a few key pieces that you can mix and match in to achieve multiple looks.

Also, have a loose formula for the season. I think we all want to be flexible and experimental, but when time doesn't allow, know what's working for you. For example, my go-to formula right now is skinny on the bottom and loose on the top. Yours might be something slim on the top and easy on the bottom. Whatever it is, you'll know the items to grab and that, for the most part, the proportions will work.

One of my quick tricks for days I don't have time to fuss with my outfit is going with a monochromatic look. Even though it doesn't take much thought, it gives off the opposite impression. If you don't have every item matching, try matching your blouse to your blazer or your pumps to your pants.

As we've discussed before, knowing when to spend and when to save on fashion can be tricky. While it's probably pretty obvious by now that it makes sense to spend a little more on classic pieces, while saving on more of-the-moment trends, today we're getting even more specific.

We consulted our resident style advisor Marissa Webb, who shared with us her tips for budget spending—namely, the five items you can always find for under $100. Some of her picks might surprise you.

Jewellery is a great way to update your wardrobe every season. You can easily find great pieces without spending a fortune.

I'm personally a big denim wearer. I don't care what brand I'm wearing, as long as they have a great fit. I've spent way under $100 on some of my favourites pairs of jeans.

I can never have enough white tops in a wide variety of styles. They're something you can wear all year-round. If I love one, often I'll pick up two in different sizes: one for a true fit and the other larger one for an oversized boyfriend or tunic feel. White tops are very versatile and usually quite affordable.

I love a T-shirt that has texture and feels more elevated, but at the same time is extremely easy and comfortable for everyday wear. I stock up on linen and linen-cotton blend T-shirts for that reason. You can certainly find these for a great price in a variety of sleeve lengths, colours, and prints.

One of the great ongoing battles of fashion is what you should spend real money on versus what you should buy on the cheap. In a world more and more saturated with fast-fashion brands, it seems that spending as little money as possible is always the goal—but is that really smart? We know there must be at least a few items worth the splurge.

I personally would invest in a great handbag. It’s something that you use every day and, in a neutral colour, will last you for many years.

You need a beautiful pair of flats and a classic pair of heels. Select pairs that give a bit of personality to any outfit, but at the same time can be paired with almost anything. I also like to make sure I have a great pair of flats that I can wear on the days I know I’ll be on my feet all day, but still need to look dressed.

The perfect trench coat will never go out of style and is easily incorporated into many looks. 

Another investment piece is a great-fitting blazer that easily takes you from day to night. There are just so many ways to wear it—I personally love it to dress up a pair of jeans.

Celebrate something that's important to you with an investment piece you can wear everyday.

Invest in a perfectly tailored little black dress, and have it ready to go in your closet. You never know when you'll need to make a quick change, and the LBD is always appropriate.

There's nothing more frustrating than trying on a pair of jeans, committing to them by dropping cash, and then getting home and feeling disappointed by your decision. It sometimes seems as though the denim actually morphs between the time you leave the store and the time you get home—either that, or your body changed dramatically.

Well, we want to make sure we do what we can to erase this experience completely from your life, and we enlisted Banana Republic creative director Marissa Webb to help. Below, she shares her tips for making sure you always find the right jeans for your body —whether you're curvy, slim, tall, or petite.

Denim with stretch seems to work for a majority of body types, but you should try on many different brands to see what works best for you. And don't forget to look at the rise—that's often the key to comfort.

If you are concerned about extra weight in the middle, try a higher rise.

If you're concerned with your backside, larger pockets can conceal what you don't want to show.

The right flare can help give length and elongate the legs, especially if you are petite with curves.

If you're on the petite side, there are many great cropped options out there. But denim is also easy to alter, so don't limit yourself because of your height. Something to keep in mind when getting your jeans hemmed is to find a tailor who knows how to properly hem denim. Usually the best solution is to cut off the original hem and to reapply it, so you keep the authentic denim stitch and thread.

If you want to hide some of your not-so-favourite curves, try a straight leg, which helps to balance out your curves.

Explore and try on as many different fits as you have time for. Often, it's the fit you think won’t work for you that you end up falling in love with.

You can never have enough pairs. Most people have their signature shape, but to mix up your look, I think it's worth exploring all different types every season. There's usually something new out there to add to my collection. It's also fun to explore different colour frames, and to shop in both the men's and women's sections.

You simply need to have your favourite shoe of the season.

Handbags are a great way to freshen up your look. I usually carry something neutral during the day, and love to add a pop of colour to my handbag at night.

I usually go softer in the winter and a little bit bolder in the summer, when I have a bit more colour from the sun. Lipstick shades are, of course, very personal depending on skin tone, so a lipstick that looks great on you might not work for me. It's important to try different brands to find the perfect shade for you.

Scarves are a great accessory for all year-round in different weights and fabrications. It's one of those easy pick-up items from your travels. They also make great gifts!
