For many of us, this time of year calls for a seasonal scent update. As we bid farewell to summer, the turn of the leaves and the sudden drop in temperature have us reaching for our autumn perfumes once again as we welcome in these cooler, crisp days. Thankfully, the world's most esteemed fashion houses have spoilt us with their fragrance launches of late, each providing plenty of scented inspiration to take us through the season and beyond—whilst racking up plenty of compliments along the way.

These days, new perfumes and niche fragrances from independent brands launch pretty much every week, but previously, luxury fragrances were strictly the business of pioneering and exclusive fashion houses, such as Dior. Much like today, these fragrances allowed consumers to buy into a small piece of the brand, which was particularly appealing if they didn't have the means to invest in a full high-end wardrobe. Fragrance, with all of its emotive connotations, offers us a chance to experience the very essence of these luxury designers with every spritz, on a more objectively accessible budget—an idea that remains very compelling to those who would like a slice of the lifestyle these brands signify.

Many fragrance icons, like Chanel's legendary No.5, were born in the 1920s. The decade was a pivotal moment for women's style, shrugging off the dated silhouettes of the previous century and welcoming in more directional pieces like flapper dresses and trousers, the latter of which were formerly reserved for menswear. Chanel No.5 echoed this shift in the zeitgeist by tapping into aldehydes; an airy, soapy note rarely used in perfumery at the time, and combined it with jasmine, ylang-ylang and rose. It quickly became an icon in the fragrance world, and today, No.5 remains one of the most recognisable and best-selling fragrances globally; a testament to the everlasting draw that fashion houses can bring to our most-loved fragrances.

Fast-forward 100 years, and legacy fashion houses continue to tempt us with new additions to their exclusive fragrance selections. However, to compete with the independent brands entering this space, they've had to become even more luxurious in the process. Now crafting elevated elixirs that are often lesser-known than the commercially-led No.5s and Miss Diors that commonly front the brands in magazines and on billboards, these scents are an "if you know, you know" affair—if you wear them, we just know you have excellent taste.

Meanwhile, this year marked the launch of both Balmain and Fendi's freshly reimagined fragrance lines, honouring the fashion houses' rich historical heritage and simultaneously offering a kaleidoscope of beautiful scents that feel truly modern. If that's not enough to entice you, then the latest launches from Celine, Louis Vuitton and Givenchy are sure set any fragrance lover's pulse racing upon the very first spritz—these are icons in the making.

1. CELINE ZOUZOU

Inspired by 1960s fashion icons from the silver screen, fashion and literature, Celine's ZouZou is a powdery and playful scent that immediately transports you to a glamorous powder room of yesteryear. Think pixie haircuts, painted lashes and big powder puffs that send plumes of powdery musk into the air. Artistic Director Hedi Slimane desired to create a perfume that captured eternal youth, and gave ZouZou its name as an affectionate nickname (which was often used to describe women with short hairstyles) and a nod to French actress Danièle Ciarlet.

Despite being inspired by the '60s, the scent sits firmly in the present. The sweet, woody benzoin and smooth tonka bean unfurl into an ambery, caramel trail that is guaranteed to turn heads and linger on autumn knitwear. As it dries down, it welcomes in earthy patchouli and woody, resinous labdanum, leaving behind a trail of powdery musk and vanilla that lingers for hours. Housed in a fluted glass bottle, it's as much a thing of beauty to admire on your dressing table as it is to experience on your skin throughout the day, and is bound to make you feel just as iconic as the chic women who inspired it.

2. CHANEL COMÈTE

Chanel's latest fragrance from the Les Exclusifs De Chanel collection, Comète is captivating and deeply rooted in the fashion house's lore. Gabrielle Chanel, known for being superstitious and having a fascination with astrology (she was a Leo, FYI), drew inspiration from the stars when designing her first jewellery collection. One standout piece was a diamond-encrusted necklace shaped like a shooting star, specifically moulded to sit closely to the skin. This iconic piece inspired Comète, a perfume said to capture the essence of stardust, echoing the form-fitting necklace with its skin-like musk.

The scent is powdery, sparkling and intricate, evolving beautifully with your skin's chemistry. Its notes include heliotrope, powdery iris, cherry blossom accord and a smooth, musky base. Whilst it wears close to the skin, the projection and longevity are impressive; the dry-down lingers for hours, often leaving a lasting impression noticeable to those around you. The first day I tested it, I could still smell the shimmering scent hours after spraying, like olfactory stardust suspended in the air.

3. CHRISTIAN DIOR LUCKY ESPIRIT DE PARFUM

When it comes to luxury French fashion houses, it doesn’t get much more iconic than Dior. The brand began creating fragrances in 1947, launching Miss Dior in the same year; a scent which remains a classic to this day. However, in 2021, the brand announced that Francis Kurkdjian (the very perfumer behind Baccarat Rouge 540) was to be the House's new perfume creation director—since then we’ve seen Kurkdjian reimagine some of the most iconic Dior fragrances.

The brand's latest launch with Kurkdjian? A concentrated reiteration of five famous scents from the La Collection Priveé Christian Dior Collection. These reimagined fragrances are bold, head-turning, compliment-inducing scents that radiate modern luxury. Although any of the five would be a great addition to your perfume collection, if we had to choose one, it would have to be Lucky Esprit de Parfum.

This pretty scent is inspired by the stems of lily of the valley that Christian Dior would sew into the hems of Haute Couture dresses or tuck into his pockets for good luck. It features fresh, delicate notes of the flower wrapped in a woody-leather accord that gives the floral opening impressive depth. "To me, it’s a crisp autumn walk in a bottle. Whenever I spritz this, I can practically feel the leaves crunching underneath my feet," says our junior beauty editor, Grace Lindsay.

4. BALMAIN CARBONE

One of the most exciting fragrance launches of the season has to be awarded to Balmain Beauty. The brand has just released a collection of eight all-gender fragrances called Les Éternels de Balmain, inspired by the brand’s Parisian legacy and Creative Director Olivier Rousteing’s modern influence. In 1947, Balmain revolutionised the fragrance world with the launch of the first iconic green scent, Vent Vert, and we have no doubt that Les Éternels de Balmain will carry the same legacy.

The bottles themselves are a work of art, and they feel like a true expression of how fashion and beauty cannot exist without one another, as explained by Rousteing when he discusses the fragrances. However, not even the bottles could prepare us for just how exquisite these scents are. Although we could write an essay on each and every one, from the minute we smelt it, we knew that Carbone would be our autumn fragrance of choice. This is the sort of scent that you want to wrap yourself in and never take off. It’s a complex fragrance with notes of sensual white musk at the heart, but it opens with hints of sweet rose, which almost lures you into a false sense of security before the true depth of this perfume comes through and you start to discover its darker side. Once notes of musk settle on the skin, you're treated to a warming haze of tobacco, suede and cumin. It’s bold, it’s unique and it’s truly delicious.

5. LOUIS VUITTON LV LOVERS

Louis Vuitton’s latest fragrance is, without a doubt, love at first smell. Inspired by the sensation of sunlight on your skin and the natural process of photosynthesis, it exudes a radiant blend of green and woody notes, evoking the feeling of wandering through a sunlit forest surrounded by fresh, dewy leaves in dappled light.

Crafted by Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud in collaboration with men's Creative Director, Pharrell Williams, the scent is intended as an invigorating well-being elixir that instantly boosts your mood. And who doesn't want that once the nights begin to draw in? The fragrance boasts impressive projection and longevity, lingering on clothes all day like an optimistic halo.

The zing of ginger opens the scent, followed a the woody green snap of galbanum before drying down into creamy sandalwood and soft cedarwood. It’s one of those uplifting scents that not only smells incredible but instantly elevates your spirits with every spritz. We applaud Louis Vuitton for bottling liquid sunshine, just in time to carry us through the darker months ahead.

6. GIVENCHY L'INTERDIT ABSOLU

According to Givenchy’s latest perfume launch, this season is not the time to be subtle with your scent of choice. The French fashion house is known for its daring fragrances, and one of our all-time favourites has to be L’Interdit, a musky-floral scent that lingers beautifully on the skin.

This autumn, the brand has introduced a new iteration called L’Interdit Absolu Eau de Parfum Intense. With an intoxicating blend of orange blossom, sambac jasmine, lavender and cardamom, it’s an uplifting scent with a strong, sensual base. Although the opening is inherently floral, your senses are taken on a journey thanks to rich notes of tobacco and rum absolute. Once it settles on the skin, warming cashmeran comes through, making this fragrance feel just as luxurious as your favourite cashmere jumper.

7. FENDI DOLCE BACIO

Fendi sent editors' hearts aflutter with the launch of seven fragrances this year, each inspired by the Fendi family personalities that have each shaped the brand throughout the generations. Our favourite? Dolce Bacio.

Inspired by Anna Fendi, who also happens to have an ochre-coloured rose named after her, Dolce Bacio takes the classical rose note and pairs it with the alluringly sweet and sunny apricot. Described as "a tender kiss on the cheek that leaves behind a faint rose lipstick scent" and "vibrant orange sunrises overlooking rose gardens in Rome", you would be forgiven for thinking this is only a fruity-floral. However, the addition of Indonesian patchouli unfurls, making this scent both gentle and powerful; a trait that Anna Fendi's daughter Silvia Venturini Fendi notices in the generations of Fendi women.

Upon first spritz, this scent sparkles with the brightness of sun-kissed apricot and the earthy, smokey dryness of patchouli. At its heart lies the opulent damask rose from Turkey—powerful, velvety and akin to a warm embrace, making this a cosy scent that will linger long into autumnal evenings.

I'm not one to shy away from bold accessories. In fact, in the last month alone, I've purchased a zebra-print belt, embellished slides, and enough rainbow jewellery to rival any eight-year-old's collection. However, when it comes to investment bags, my practical gene kicks in, and I always end up opting for classic styles and timeless colours to ensure I'll get endless use out of each purchase. The accessory I currently have my sights set on? This new quilted black leather bag from Balmain.

I've seen it used in so many different outfits all over Instagram, which means it has incredible cost per wear potential. It would be truly difficult to find a look that isn't made cooler by way of this handbag, and these nine are currently topping my list of ones I'm ready to copy with my aforementioned chosen style. 

The quilted leather and gold chain detail on the bag really stand out against a neutral slip dress. Finishing this look off with everyone's favourite summer 2019 sandals is really just the cherry on top.

It's true—2017 has arguably saved its most out-there fashion collab for last. Victoria's Secret just announced on its Instagram that the brand is teaming up with Balmain on a collection to be launched on November 29. The lingerie retailer teased the news with a black-and-white illustration featuring the words "Balmain loves VS."

As Vogue reports, Balmain will be designing looks for the VS Fashion Show in Shanghai as well as a capsule collection. "As for what to expect from Balmain’s VS line, you can bet on some sexily gilded items, lots of body-conscious silhouettes and the label’s luxury expertise being translated into both the runway and real-world items," Vogue explains. "While other designers have made several looks for the Victoria’s Secret show in the past, this collaboration marks the first time VS has ever partnered with a high fashion brand on items to be sold in its stores." Style Notes: Seeing as Oliver Rousteing's designs are usually figure-hugging and feminine, we can only predict that there will be an explosion of total sassiness on the catwalk between the two brands.

Gigi Hadid stalking the runway in a molten chainmail dress? It could only mean one thing: Balmain's show during Paris Fashion Week. Creative director Olivier Rousteing's now instantly recognisable, high-octane, highly glamorous aesthetic can be called out from 100 paces—as can his so-famous-it's-insane front-row club with Kanye and Kim Kardashian West acting as the shiny, paparazzi-attracting linchpin.

There's a lot you already know about the booming French fashion brand, thanks to this high-profile clique, but there's also much that you don't. For a notable amount of time in between the founder (Pierre Balmain) stepping down and Olivier's star rising, the house wasn't on the radar in quite the same loud, omnipresent way it is today.

Even with social media acting as the cheerleading coach to an already seriously upbeat fashion team, there's still much you may not be aware of when it comes to the boundary-pushing Instagram king and creative director. So, if you've ever wanted to gen up on the brand that every It girl wants to wear/be in the campaign of/walk the runway for/party with, here's your chance. Keep reading to find out the things you never knew about Balmain.

According to Vogue.com, a deal was recently finalised with a major investment company to make this move—a higher-than-expected price that is greatly accredited to Olivier Rousteing's successful brand-building as creative director. 

It's a toss-up between Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, pictured. Many of the most daring Hollywood stars were into the decadence of Balmain's past, just as they are now.

Surprised? Well, you probably know his Instagram stats instead—3.9 million and counting. Olivier has worked in the fashion industry since he was 18 and took up the head role at Balmain when he was only 24 back in 2011—a seriously impressive task he's continued to nail season upon season.

Mr. De la Renta was followed by Christophe Decarnin (whom Olivier worked alongside before stepping up to the bar). Even Karl Lagerfeld had a very brief stint at the French fashion brand.

A/W 15 reportedly celebrated the rebellion that forced his friend, Rihanna, to be banned from Instagram in 2014 over a supposedly risqué post.

Perhaps nowadays this doesn't seem like an unusual route (Tom Ford studied architecture, and Raf Simons furniture design before venturing into fashion), but Pierre Balmain initially eschewed fashion at the time to "appease his mother."

Thanks to a rogue hacker, many an exclusive magazine or online fashion piece was destroyed (mine included). But the hype grew even stronger, and a website-crashing effect of the November 2015 launch saw the collaboration sell out in no time—with this particular pearl jacket quickly finding its way onto eBay priced up by about £600 to £1000.

Kicked off by Decarnin's power-shouldered, street-savvy glitz and glamour, the late pop star did actually wear Balmain's instantly recognisable (women's) outerwear. As fate would have it, Olivier is a superfan, recently posting a picture of Jackson in his iconic military-style jacket to Instagram.

Don't let the social media connections fool you; Olivier is in honest and meaningful friendships with the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. They all share one thing Rousteing admires in women: power.

"He can be chic and he can be sexy. He's so iconic—he has a sex appeal beyond his clothes. This is what I love about him," he told MatchesFashion.com.

According to Vogue [in The Fashion Book], Monsieur Balmain's focus was often on heavily embellished and decorative skirts. It was all part of the signature look called "Jolie Madame," an opulent reaction to wartime utilitarianism and the sombre style that came with it.

But—good news—it has since been doubling profits year on year. 

You can't actually get your face chiseled to be as razor-sharp and naturally handsome as Olivier's, but he once told me, when opening the brand's flagship store in London, that it's all down to "fish face: suck in cheek and three-quarter [angle]. Good filter and it's fine. And 25 pictures before getting the right one. Maybe not 25, maybe three or four!"

What to wear? This predicament is greatly heightened when the occasion in mind is your wedding day. Fashion editors are not immune to the bridal pressure cooker either; if anything, it adds more gravity to people’s expectations. The lead-up to my wedding involved the usual whirlwind of questions facing a newly engaged woman: What dress would I go for? How would I wear my hair? Which designer would I choose? The hunt was on for the dream dress but it just didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.

Being curvy, tall and a lover of carbs, I couldn’t imagine myself in something slinky, nor did I want to go down the meringue route. I made multiple appointments to try on wedding gowns but my heart didn’t flutter. Quite the contrary, I felt doomed to look like an avalanche of crêpe de chine. I just couldn’t find a 360-degree fit for my shape that oozed my style. As options narrowed and lunch breaks were filled up with snow flurries of manic dress searches, I called it quits on bridal pret-à-porter. The dress just didn’t exist. Yet.

The haute pursuit begins! If something is classed as couture, then it means that a piece is made-to-measure for your body. You can choose a designer dress from a collection and have it fitted exclusively to your shape. Wonderful, but what if you want to go one step further and design your own garment? One could save up £200,000 and hit the marble halls of Paris where an exclusive design is made for you from one of the prestigious haute couture fashion houses, but considering there's a minority of regular global customers, this is unlikely for most.

If you don't own a yacht or have six digits to spare, then fear not, another option is available. You could find a British-based dress designer costume designer who can make a gown especially for you. Some call it design couture—a process that includes a toile of your body, an exclusive design, a garment made in-house, and personal fittings to underscore the design process. Bridal-designers-cum-courtiers are like gold dust because only a select few fashion houses make one-of-kind gowns; the industries main focus is on ready-to-wear. I found the right one via recommendations from friends at Brides magazine, but some determined Google searches would unearth your local options.

Who What Wear UK: There’s so much to organize for a wedding day. How important is it to share information about the event planning with the dress designer?

Anita Massarella: It’s very helpful to know as much as possible. I like to get a background of the bride’s wedding vision, and if there’s a storyboard or Pinterest link to ideas then that helps me to get a sense of the couple’s personality.

WWW UK: What questions do you often ask the bride about the wedding plans?

AM: Is the day going to be formal or more relaxed? In a grand venue or outdoors? Home or abroad? Even if the bride is still forming a plan for her big day, it’s helpful to know the wider context so that together we can create a suitable design for the season. As soon as the colour theme for the venue is decided, it’s important to inform your dress designer so that it can be reflected in little flourishes on the garment, if at all.

WWW UK: It’s hard to know what credentials to look out for in a fashion house or dressmaker. How do you identify where to go?

AM: If you cannot find what you want in ready-to-wear (i.e. off-the-peg collections) then having something designed uniquely for you is a great option. Enquire if the designer can offer exclusive designs or to what extent they customise dresses. We create one-of-a-kind couture dresses but not all places do. It's also okay to ask how many years of experience the designer has. Do read the client testimonials on their social media and website; it’s clear when a brand has a good reputation. You ideally want a team that can deliver the entire package: create an exclusive design to suit you, produce the dress pattern, make the dress in-house and provide the professional fittings.

On Kate Moss: John Galliano Haute Couture veil.

WWW UK: Where do most of your brides get their dress ideas from?

AM: Mainly Instagram, Pinterest or cut-outs from society events in the back of Vogue, Tatler etc. I’ve noticed that when people look at photos from formal events, like polo or Ascot, then it’s easier to see a range of different clothing designs worn by real people with varying figures. It can be less daunting than looking at models.

WWW UK: Once you’ve found the right person to collaborate with and to make your dress, what’s the best way to kick-start the design process?

AM: You don’t need to know the fabric or design terminology, a good designer can interpret what you want by the way you describe what you like. For example, an experienced designer will be able to tell from a photo if the bride wants something soft, bias-cut and clings to the body, and billowing chiffon coming from the back of it, or if the structure of the dress needs to boned, corseted, stiff dress etc.

On Audrey Hepburn: Balmain Haute Couture dress.

WWW UK: There are so many different fabrics to choose from. How do you pick the right one?

AM: Identify how you would like your dress to move and sit on your body. If you want it to sway and flow, then chiffon is perfect for that. If you want a stiff dress then gabardine holds its shape; but this where the designer's expertise comes in. Just remember that the style of the dress needs to work with the choice of fabric.

WWW UK: How do you get ideas into one cohesive design?

AM: Begin with an outline of a body sketched on a piece of paper. Drawing out ideas is a great starting point. I tend to go step-by-step from talking about what neckline would suit the client to the favoured sleeve length, how it fits the waist etc. At each stage, you need to consider how the design works as a whole and how to keep it all in proportion with your shape.

WWW UK: When the design is agreed, what’s the next step?

AM: The next stage is finalising which fabrics will be used in the lining, for the main body of the dress. This process involves looking at lots of fabric samples with your designer and exploring which shades suit your complexion. I go as far as including the bride in choosing the very buttons and hand-picking the beads that will be sewn on! You can decide which beads, what colours, what shade, what size! If you’re making a dress from scratch, you can even cherry-pick embellishments or fabrics that suit the shade of your eyes.

WWW UK: How can a bride get the most out of dress fittings?

AM: Wear a really good fitting bra, and the heels that you are going to wear on the day (or of a similar height) because that will affect your posture. A good designer will offer you the opportunity to make adjustments at your fitting. Do take the opportunity to amend the design slightly or be more bold with decisions, like lowering a neckline slightly or exaggerating the silhouette of the dress by asking for the fabric to be nipped in a little.

WWW UK: On a second fitting, is it a good idea to bring the extra outfit details?

AM: Absolutely! The second fitting is where you can road test all of the elements of your look to see what works. If you’re having a hair trial then come in for a fitting with the hair and makeup trial. It’s also a good chance to try out the veil to make sure all the final pieces come together. If you are having a tryout for your bouquet, bring it in at this point. Then you can check that everything is perfect. Don’t be afraid to point out details that you want to be tweaked. And when you have your final fitting, do bring a bottle of chilled champagne and your best friend and/or your mother to soak in the fun of it all!
