There aren't a lot of clothing items that if you put them on Meghan Markle, won't look incredible. Really, I'm not sure if there are any at all. But, as someone who's studied her style from the Suits days until now, I can tell you that there are some pieces that stand out amongst the rest as being especially chic and memorable. One such example just made its debut this week, and already, I'm convinced that it'll go down as the centrepiece of one of the humanitarian's best outfits yet. 

On Tuesday, Markle, along with Prince Harry, spoke on a panel in New York City called the Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in the Digital Age, which The Archewell Foundation, the couple's charitable organisation, put on with Project Healthy Minds for World Mental Health Day. For the speaking engagement, Markle chose one of the minimalist shades that she wears best, ivory, in the form of an off-the-shoulder Altuzarra blazer that she then paired with matching tailored trousers from the NYC-based brand and her go-to Aquazzura pumps. 

Across fashion, off-the-shoulder silhouettes have been gaining momentum as the chic older sister to a basic tee, tank, or in this case, blazer. It adds a touch of sexiness while also maintaining an undeniable air of elegance and sophistication. So, it's really no wonder why I and everyone else I've shown the below photo to have been equally obsessed with Markle's look for the event. Name something better than spotting Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on a hot date in New York City—I'll wait. The couple, who descended upon NYC because of Prince Harry's role as the keynote speaker during the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, followed up the event with a dinner out at Locanda Verde in TriBeCa, where Markle debuted yet another one of her many winning looks.

Just like she did for her daytime ensemble, the Duchess of Sussex opted for black, wearing a sleek, strapless jumpsuit by Gabriela Hearst. Accessories play a big role on the days you're really on the run. I make sure I have my necklaces, bracelets, and the right bag. It adds that extra touch to an otherwise basic outfit.

A great blazer helps polish off almost any look. I often toss on my tuxedo blazer over a simple T-shirt-and-jeans look. 

Every woman should have fashionable flats ready for those days when heels just aren't going to happen.

Many of us don't have the luxury of styling a great look every day. So have your go-to items—such as your favourite pants, tops, and shoes for the season—always ready. Then invest in a few key pieces that you can mix and match in to achieve multiple looks.

Also, have a loose formula for the season. I think we all want to be flexible and experimental, but when time doesn't allow, know what's working for you. For example, my go-to formula right now is skinny on the bottom and loose on the top. Yours might be something slim on the top and easy on the bottom. One of my quick tricks for days I don't have time to fuss with my outfit is going with a monochromatic look. Even though it doesn't take much thought, it gives off the opposite impression. If you don't have every item matching, try matching your blouse to your blazer or your pumps to your pants.

In a world more and more saturated with fast-fashion brands, it seems that spending as little money as possible is always the goal—but is that really smart? I also like to make sure I have a great pair of flats that I can wear on the days I know I’ll be on my feet all day, but still need to look dressed.

Another investment piece is a great-fitting blazer that easily takes you from day to night. There are just so many ways to wear it—I personally love it to dress up a pair of jeans.

For a long time, I never spent more than about $150 on a pair of shoes. I forayed in everything from sub-$30 shoes (a dabbling I strongly recommend against after one very painful romp across Midtown Manhattan) to $400 booties on sale for a remarkable $133 (one of my favourite sale finds to date!)—but never did I drop more than $150 on a pair. I simply refused, based on principle, on account of my love for thriftiness, and on a belief that, truthfully, is a $400 shoe that much more high-quality than a $100 shoe?

The answer, I’ve now learned, is that yes, it is. I recently donated 400 of my hard-earned dollars to a for-profit charity organisation otherwise known as Bloomingdale’s, purchasing this pair of Stuart Weitzman pumps that I simply could not refuse. When I saw the perfectly pointed stiletto, the subtle gleam of iridescence, and the deeply-cut silhouette of the arch, I felt that I had waited my entire life to spend so much money on one pair of shoes—and this was the pair I was destined for.

As my clicker finger paused over the purchase button, I pondered what I was doing. As a 28-year-old woman, I had finally reached the point where I felt like I should own a pair of shoes that costs a somewhat significant portion of my rent—ones that at least had the potential to elevate my personal style from respectable to undeniable. My feet needed an upgrade. Plus, this was all in the name of science: I had to test my long-held belief that expensive shoes weren’t that much better than shoes of average price points. I clicked purchase.

And I’m here to share with you, ladies, an unfortunate truth: Expensive shoes really are better than cheap ones. Here’s a breakdown of what I’ve gathered, point by point:

1. They’re more comfortable.

While stilettos are rarely if ever comfortable, this pair is without a doubt the most comfortable I’ve ever owned. Because the construction quality is so high, and the quality of the leather is too, I feel like my foot is being constantly hugged by my shoe—a sensation that gives at least the illusion of comfort, even when true comfort isn’t entirely present.

2. They feel much more stable.

What’s truly amazing about a well-crafted stiletto is that it makes you feel like you’re not walking on a stabby rod of metal, when in fact you are. While most stilettos I’ve owned have mostly resulted in me wobbling around like a maniac, this more expensive pair somehow makes me feel like I can walk like a normal human being in them. Unlike with shoes that are more cheaply constructed, I don’t feel like I’m tempting fate with each and every step.

3. They magically withdraw compliments from others.

As much as I don’t want to believe it’s true, expensive shoes just look better. If you buy a good pair of expensive heels, they tend to look expensive, which just equates to looking sleek, well-made, and stylish. While I am a big proponent of brands like Zara and ASOS, who have more affordable shoes that oftentimes look just as pricey as the real deal—I’ve come to believe that there is no replacement for true quality.
