I live in London and spend most of my summers in the city. In years gone by, that meant I could get away with wearing lightweight knits and my favourite boots for the majority of the year, but this hotter summer has called for far fewer layers, meaning many of my go-to closed-toe shoes have been relegated to the back of my wardrobe. Stepping out during a string of press appearances ahead of The Odyssey's release this week, Anne Hathaway wore a low-key look that hit every note for summer in the city styling. Whilst her chartreuse floral trousers and tonal maxi cardigan initially caught my eye, it was her bright white mesh heeled ballet pumps that really had me reaching for my keyboard.

Offering the breezy comfort of an open sandal with the practicality of a closed-toe shoe, mesh ballet flats are, in my opinion, one of the chicest alternatives to flip-flops this season.

Stepping out in New York, Anne Hathaway wore the trend with a pair of navy wide-leg trousers. Whilst flip-flops might have felt a little too casual against the weight of the tailored trousers, Hathaway's mesh ballet flats brought balance to the look, creating a polished finish without sacrificing comfort.

If there’s one thing I can tell you for certain, without having even seen The Devil Wears Prada 2, it’s that a million girls would kill for the wardrobe. Nearly 20 years after the original, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are stepping back into their iconic roles, and if the first looks are anything to go by, the fashion—if not groundbreaking—is certainly breathtaking.

The credentials that make you a chic Londoner certainly must feature a caveat around dressing appropriately for the weather. So, when Anne Hathaway and Simone Ashley stepped out for a public appearance in the city’s West End wearing a near-identical silhouette that served as proof that a well-edited wardrobe can serve through any climate, I immediately paid close attention.

Indeed, arriving at Broadcasting House in Portland Place to promote their upcoming high-stakes, high-fashion drama The Devil Wears Prada 2, both stars seemed to be acutely aware that they were dressing for this precise transitional moment by relying on some incredibly functional anything-but-boring basics to see them through.

However, given the fact they’ve just been joined at the hip on the film’s whirlwind worldwide press tour, it appears they were so sartorially synergistic that they showed up in similar silhouettes. For the occasion, both Hathaway and Ashley relied on sumptuous grey knitwear and a statement skirt, though each put their own respective twist on it.

Leaning into her more editorial side, Hathaway looked to a slate-coloured cardigan and matching pencil skirt from Stella McCartney’s recent autumn/winter 2026 runway. The ensemble was punctuated with a faux-fur belt and completed with burgundy Bvlgari jewellery and Christian Louboutin pumps.

Yet, for British native Ashley, she embraced the more edgy and rebellious side of the city with a youthful set from Italian contemporary ready-to-wear brand N°21. The look itself featured a slouchy, crew-neck jumper and a pink taffeta bubble skirt. To tie it all together, she opted for a pair of mocha brown suede pumps.

Of course, the thing that struck me the most was how some simple balmy switches immediately transformed humdrum style staples into a chic and cool ensemble worthy of replication.

We all have a grey knit hiding in the back of our closets somewhere—and given summer’s only just starting to creep in, it’s probably not too far out of reach still—so ditching denim jeans and opting for an elegant or eclectic skirt trend is a surefire way to elevate your spring outfits. After making its comeback in Chemena Kamali’s debut collection as creative director for Chloé, the bohemian style has certainly worked overtime in rebuilding its public image. Once relegated to ‘70s costume parties, only worn to tend your garden, or exclusively seen in the shoe arsenals of those who take orthopaedic health very seriously, clogs have toiled hard to shed these connotations and be taken seriously as an incredibly chic, albeit still controversial, spring shoe choice.

Who better to plead this case than Hathaway herself? After all, the Academy Award winner knows all too well about garnering the appeal of the mainstream after being collectively ‘cancelled’ and, more fittingly for her character in the upcoming sequel, how the right style can completely overhaul your image. Still, she’s not alone in her adoration for this chunky silhouette. From Lily Rose-Depp wearing a pair of Dr. Scholl's for a stroll through New York, Jennifer Lawrence ditching The Row and Dior for a felted pair you can buy on Amazon and Amal Clooney making this her beach shoe du jour during a recent trip to Saint-Tropez, there’s really no better proof that clogs are worth your attention.

Sure, they might not lean into the Carmela Soprano elegance of Hathaway’s prowl-worthy jacket or the polish of her Slim Aaron-esque denim, but when you can’t have the Chanel boots, why not settle for clogs? Ask anyone who works in fashion publishing, and they’ll most likely tell you that their career aspirations began after seeing the glamorous women working in magazines in early 2000s chick flicks. Now, with the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 on May 1, it feels like a full circle to be reporting on the wardrobe of the characters that played a pivotal role in where I am today.

Though I’d never be so brazen as to throw my work phone in the Fontaines de la Concorde whilst on a business trip during Haute Couture week, the trials and tribulations of the film’s protagonist, Andy Sachs, taught me a lot about the underbelly of luxury journalism. The biggest lessons? Never navel-gaze during a run-through, dare you trigger a scathing monologue about the importance of cerulean blue, and if the title’s creative director offers to transform your look by loaning you designer call-ins, under no circumstances should you turn that down.

Indeed, the original’s makeover scene is one of the most memorable moments throughout the entire run time, and despite Andy ultimately walking away from her role as Miranda Priestly's assistant in search of something more aligned with her values, it's clear the wisdom she gleaned during her time there certainly isn’t lost in the sequel. And, with Anne Hathaway returning for the sequel, it’s apparent that the Academy Award winner leveraged her own status as a fashion darling to help dress the formerly hapless second PA.

In lieu of Chanel thigh-high boots and John Galliano gowns, Andy Sachs has a more corporate bohème slant to the way she dresses, presumably gained after trading Calvin Klein skirts for a tenure at a local New York newspaper. There’s plenty of modern tailoring in store—the woman loves a pinstripe!—though the proportions are looser and teamed with eclectic finishes like a vintage Coach briefcase. There’s also a sequin Rabanne dress and new season Phoebe Philo woven throughout, proving that you can take the girl out from Runway, but you can’t take Runway out of the girl.

Costume designer and protégé of Patricia Field, Molly Rogers, has clearly taken cues from her mentor by imbuing Andy's outfits with a sense of historical value by dressing her in this vintage Jean Paul Gaultier waistcoat and trousers from the 1990s. The fabric itself is also an homage to the early 20th Century Wall Street types who made pinstripes synonymous with power dressing, indicating that she's by no means a simple lackey anymore and someone who will play a pivotal part in enshrining Runway's longevity.

Style Notes: In an homage to her concluding look from the first film, Anne Hathaway was spotted wearing a brown suede blazer from Ralph Lauren, light wash Levi's jeans and Valentino Garavani's studded Nellcôte bag. Style Notes: Given the fact that Andy started her career in fashion not even knowing who legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier was, let alone how to spell his name, it's came as such a surprise to dressed in a covetable piece from Phoebe Philo's first collection for her eponymous lapel. Pairing the high-low t-shirt with a pair of The Hamptons white trousers and sculptural Prada heels feels completely ananthama to her essence, but boy does it look good. She might have the job a million girls would kill for, and now the wardrobe to match.

4. Khaite Dress + Coach Bag

Style Notes: Given The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set and shot in Manhattan, it's only fitting that Andy's outfits honour the emerging and established designers who call the city home. Whilst filming what's speculated to be a funeral scene around Central Park, she was seen wearing a sheer maxi dress from Downtown-based luxury label Khaite. The Wes dress features pintucking through the bodice and is made of sheer organza, which certainly wouldn't warrant any pursed lips.

Style Notes: Could this outfit be Andy's most controversial yet? (Aside from the sweater fished out of a clearance bin from some tragic casual corner, as Meryl Streep so aptly observes in her iconic monologue, of course.) Appearing to have stepped off a Greyhound bus from a seeming weekend in Long Island, Andy returns to the city in a kaleidoscopic Gabriela Hearst maxi and Fendi crochet bag. As the person who traded labels for bylines, it's quite a bold move to have her dressed in such ostentatious pieces, like the £19,000 Marlo Laz necklace hung around her neck, but what's the harm in a little sartorial fantasy?

If you're reading this, you probably own a pair of flat Mary Janes. Given how long the trend has retained its popularity, most of us do at this point. While they certainly make for cute outfits, flat Mary Janes don't necessarily make for sophisticated outfits. I fully believe that shoes can have transformative powers, and the pair that Anne Hathaway just opted to wear while spotted out and about in Manhattan made her outfit look far more sophisticated than a pair of flat Mary Janes would have.

If you've already guessed that the style I'm referring to is high-heel Mary Jane pumps, you're absolutely correct. Hathaway opted for black patent-leather platforms, which she wore with a white T-shirt, pleated grey miniskirt, and plaid shirt. If she'd chosen the flat version of the enduring trend instead, her outfit would've still been good but not quite as chic and appropriate for a night out in NYC.

As we near the end of the year, celebrity outings are becoming more and more frequent. With awards ceremonies, press events and annual engagements cropping up throughout the weeks, we've had the exciting opportunity to catch an extra glimpse of some of our favourite style icons over the past month. As someone who spots trends for a living, I will admit that I was surprised to see this particular trend worn by three of my favourite famous women over the past few days. All known for their elegant, refined and manicured taste (amongst many other things), I was shocked to spot Victoria Beckham, Catherine, Princess of Wales and Anne Hathaway opt for white wide-leg trousers on drizzly December days.

Known to favour a white suit for event-wear, Victoria Beckham was spotted styling the fresh shade from head-to-toe late last week. Opting for mid-rise white wide leg trousers, Beckham style her look with a long-line white blazer, a white blouse and a slim gold belt. 

Attending a carol service at Westminster Abbey, Kate Middleton ignored the wet weather forecast and styled white, floor-skimming wide-leg trousers with a white blouse and longline white coat. Protecting the bottom of her trousers from sneaky puddles and muddy grass, The Princess opted for tall stiletto heels, adding extra height whilst keeping her ankles dry.

Simultaneously, in New York City, Anne Hathaway was spotted mirroring The Princess's outfit, styling a white base layer with matching wide-leg trousers and a lavender cardigan as she left a recording of The Tonight Show. Making her way through the city's streets, Hathaway kept her white trousers looking fresh with chunky beige boots.

Whilst winter whites are a cold-weather no-brainer, when we're met with frequent showers that lead to slippery, muddy pathways, white wide-leg trousers aren't for the faint-hearted, nor can they be described as practical. For this year's Fashion Awards, the industry's darlings flocked to the Royal Albert Hall in an array of awe-inspiring eventwear. Whilst we saw layers of tulle, a meadow's-worth of rosettes and sparkles bright enough to light up the city, I was struck by the sheer number of bright white looks instead of traditional black-tie dresses. Tapping into bridal vibes, celebrities including Pamela Anderson, Anne Hathaway and Maya Jama experimented with tones of white, cream and beige for the occasion, instead of traditional winter colours such as black, white and brown.

Style Notes: Anne Hathaway leant into the new-season bridal trend in a floor-length archive Valentino dress with a deep scoop neck and body-skimming cut. At first glance, the floor-sweeping dress appeared minimal and relaxed, but on closer inspection, its clever embroidery, intricate cut and elegant drapes elevated the vintage dress, truly embodying a less-is-more approach to event styling.

Style Notes: Channelling the same quietly confident energy, former actress and author Pamela Anderson rejected a traditional dress for the occasion, instead opting for a relaxed, tonal look that featured well-tailored white trousers, a knitted top and a boxy ivory blazer. Keeping her look bright and fresh, Anderson sported a bare face to the event, allowing her natural glow to shine through. 

Style Notes: For a grungier take on party styling, Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams tapped into several major trends at once for the event. Choosing a white tulle Simone Rocha dress, she adorned her look in flowing ribbons and injected a festive edge into her look with the addition of a crystal-embellished headpiece. Black, chunky platform heels grounded Williams' sheer, voluminous dress, giving less traditional 2024 brides a fresh dose of styling inspiration in the process.

Style Notes: Singer Olivia Dean opted for the draped dress trend, choosing a simple yet elegant white dress with cutout detailing to the evening event, which she styled with a bright gold handbag and white, pointed-toe T-bar heels.

Style Notes: Going for a distinctly bridal take, presenter Maya Jama, who hosted the event, styled sheer, white, thigh-high stockings with a bold diamond ring and lashings of frothy frills. Cinched with a corset and completing her look with white pointed-toe heels, she balanced a bridal influence with red carpet glamour, opting for a deep burgundy lip and sleek low bun.

Though we've seen brown, red and grey emerge as major colour trends this season, I'm excited to see stylish celebs opt for fresh white right on cue for winter. If you'd have asked me at age 8 what my favourite pair of shoes was, I'm pretty sure I would have said a gleaming pair of patent-leather Mary Janes. Metallic shoes have been popping up more and more on the market and in my Instagram feed, and other chic celebrities (like Katie Holmes) have also worn the trend as of late. Not only that, but they were also worn by half of all of the models that walked in Chanel's couture show this week (a gold cap-toe sock boot, to be exact). I happen to think that metallic shoes are the perfect match for jeans and I highly recommend investing in a pair if you're a regular denim wearer (or not—they kind of go with everything).

There are only a few things I know to be undeniably true. First, the best hair days tend to happen when you have no plans and you're not going to be leaving the house (naturally). Second, a breakout is sure to appear on the eve of a big event, like a birthday, job interview, graduation, or wedding (it's just the way it is). Third, French-girl beauty will never go out of style (this is an absolute). 

The latter has been proven time and time again. Whether it's the popularity of French beauty brands or trending French skincare secrets, everyone knows there's a classic and timeless aspect to it. And that's certainly true when it comes to French hairstyles, like Birkin bangs. 

Popularised by French icon Jane Birkin in the '60s, these bangs are short, slightly feathered, and universally flattering. Celebrities are proof of that. According to Tatum Neill, Creative Director of Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute, "Birkin Bangs are a soft version of a full framed fringe that dates back to '60s fashion icon Jane Birkin. They have a square shape to them much like the Hermès Birkin Bag but they do not read as geometric and blunt." 

He recommends bringing photos to the salon so you get the exact result you desire. "The best way to ensure you get the right look is to come with photos and an idea of where you want them to sit. They can be placed below, at, or above the eyebrow and should extend beyond the eyes and open up your face. Be sure to discuss your hair texture and growth patterns to ensure that they sit right and don't pop up too much when you style at home. The bangs should be cut with a little disheveled precession so they maintain a square shape but feel soft and piecey."

Getting the right cut is half the battle. Styling them is the other half. Luckily, Neill has some advice for that, too. Start with clean, damp hair and blow dry your bangs with a small paddle brush or a fine-tooth comb. "You want to follow your brush or comb with your blow-dryer with a back-and-forth movement so the hair doesn't part in any particular direction," he explains. "Once dry you can use a lightweight hair spray like Aveda's Air Control (£24) to piece some of the ends together to give it that effortless French look." Easy, right?

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt this year, it’s that 'airport style' is most definitely a thing. Traditionally, long-haul dressing was all about comfort but nowadays our favourite celebs know that a stylish travel outfit can be just as impactful as a red carpet look.

By now, everybody knows that jeans—especially rigid, non-stretch ones—are best kept in your carry-on when travelling as opposed to on your person. After all, sitting in tight jeans can be difficult enough without adding in a long plane ride. And yet, that didn't stop Anne Hathaway from hopping on a flight to LAX last week in perhaps the stiffest possible style: long cargo jeans that puddle around the ankle.

For her trip back to Los Angeles, the Devil Wears Prada star (with the help of her stylist, Erin Walsh) paired a super-light-wash pair of cargo jeans from Isabel Marant with a lightweight pink knit, a red Veronica Beard blazer, and a patterned, silk scarf tied around her neck. With it, she added even more accessories that airport security no doubt made her take off, including black Bulgari sunglasses, a Gucci's Attaché crossbody bag, and most impractical of all for a security line, a pair of white, knee-high boots. How '90s of her.

Anne Hathaway is on a promotional tour right now for her new film Armageddon Time, and her wardrobe for it is a solid 10 out of 10. She and her stylist, Erin Walsh, are really giving the people what they want, as Hathaway has become one of 2022's biggest style stars. Each of her looks on the campaign trail has been epic, but I'm here to talk about one that she wore for a morning talk show appearance this week.

Hathaway showed up wearing autumn's biggest boot trend (not groundbreaking, but it's knee-high boots), and the outfit she paired them with was a fashion dream. It consisted of an oversize blazer (in this case, a graphic black-and-white one), a white minidress, and sheer stockings. The knee boots dressed the look down a bit and brought it straight into fall. Is the term "fashion week" even relevant anymore when the industry has basically taken up the entire 365-day calendar? Outside of the traditional spring/summer and autumn/winter shows, there are also cruise collections, menswear shows, and the crème de la crème: couture week. Naturally, the Valentino Haute Couture show was packed with A-list celebrities, but Anne Hathaway's outfit stood out to me because it was a much more daring look than we're used to seeing from her. 

For the Rome event, Hathaway wore a head-to-toe Valentino outfit with the most exaggerated of proportions: a teeny-tiny miniskirt and absolutely sky-high platform heels. Guess it pays to think outside the box (or just to be Celine Dion).

Something must have been in the water at the 1999 Academy Awards because it served us some serious looks, particularly this two-piece Chanel outfit from Uma Thurman. What’s fantastic about this look is that the pale-pink strapless gown has this stunning ruched bodice and full feather skirt, making it a dreamy, princess-like look that could only be embodied by Cruz herself.

WEAR: Elie Saab gown; emerald earrings 

My love for Angelina Jolie was cemented by her 2009 Oscars red carpet look. While some critics may consider the 2012 black high-slit Atelier Versace gown her best look of all time, I’ll go to bat for this look. Yes, the Elie Saab gown stole my heart, but Jolie’s stunning emerald earrings are what sealed the deal—the dramatic colour contrast, the size, and her damn cheekbones just make this look too divine for humanity.

WHO: Zoe Saldana 

WHAT: 2010 Academy Awards

WEAR: Givenchy Couture gown

Zoe Saldana’s 2010 Oscars red carpet look is lauded as one of the best looks of all time (for a good reason). While the star was nominated for the film Avatar that year, it’s her dress that was the genuinely out-of-this-world thing—the sequins and ombré tulle make this Givenchy Couture gown designed by Riccardo Tisci a celestial piece of Oscars history.

Meryl Streep stirred up the whole pot at the 2012 Academy Awards—and not just because she won Best Actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Her choice of Lanvin garnered considerable discussion among the industry not just because people were unsure about the full-gold look but also because Streep selected Lanvin over Chanel for the ceremony. No matter what the tea is, this look is one we’ll be talking about for years to come.

WEAR: On Jennifer Lawerence: Dior Haute Couture gown; On Anne Hathaway: Prada gown

If you were to take a time machine back to the 2013 Oscars, you’d know that the buzz was all about Jennifer Lawerence and Anne Hathaway. Lawrence’s fall up the stairs to her acceptance speech and Hathaway’s "controversial” dress were the talk of the town. But the attention should have been focused on how they both handled the night with such grace (which is easy to do when you’re wearing Dior or Prada) and took away Oscars, too.

WHO: Lupita Nyong'o

Genuinely speaking, there is not a more iconic Oscars red carpet moment in recent history than Lupita Nyong’o’s 2014 ensemble. What made this look historic (other than her win of Best Supporting Actress that year) was this crystal-pleated, powder-blue, deep V-neck Prada gown. We could stare at this look forever.

WEAR: Zuhair Murad Couture dress; white fur. 

It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez has her fair share of iconic looks; however, none quite hold the same place in my heart as her 2015 Oscars After-Party outfit. Yes, her Ellie Saab gown for the ceremony was stunning, but nothing quite distills the "J.Lo aesthetic” like this full-length sequin Zuhair Murad Couture dress and white fur stole. My only question is, does love not cost a thing? Because this gown sure looks like a million bucks.

WHO: Emma Stone

WHAT: 2015 Academy Awards

WEAR: Elie Saab gown

Let it be stated for the internet records that Emma Stone is secretly that girl who always brings her A game to the red carpet. Case in point: the green floor-length, high-slit, and sequinned Elie Saab gown she wore to the 2015 Academy Awards. This isn’t a bad look; it’s a super-bad look if you catch my drift.

WEAR: On Beyoncé: Stella McCartney white gown; J. Mendel fur; Lorraine Schwartz diamond and emerald earrings On Solange: Naeem Khan gown

If I could frame this photo of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles dancing at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscars Party, I would. Does that make me an obsessive member of the Bey-hive? Sure. But the Knowles sisters never fail to serve a look—these matching white gowns are proof.

WHO: Jane Fonda

WEAR: Zuhair Murad Haute Couture jumpsuit 

Whenever I see another red carpet look from the one-and-only Jane Fonda, I always pray that I can look as fabulous as her when I grow up. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be able to wear a full-sequin Zuhair Murad Haute Couture jumpsuit, but then again, it’s Jane Fonda, and no one else can serve a red carpet look like her.

WHO: Kerry Washington

WHAT: 2016 Academy Awards

WEAR: Atelier Versace gown; Schutz shoes

Whether you’re a Scandal fan or just a Kerry Washington stan, the power of the ensemble she wore to the 2016 Oscars can not be understated. She slayed that carpet like a gladiator in head-to-toe (the ponytail, the Atelier Versace gown with a leather bodice and a high-slit, and the see-through Schutz heels) perfection.

WHO: Zendaya 

WHAT: 2018 Academy Awards

WEAR: Giambattista Valli Couture dress; Brian Atwood shoes; Bvlgari jewelry

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about the incredible celebrity and stylist pairing that is Zendaya and Law Roach. The style companions have served us some of the most iconic red carpet looks to date, including this stunning floor-length, off-the-shoulder, chocolate-brown Giambattista Valli number. Zendaya, why do you do this to me?

WHO: Saoirse Ronan

WHAT: 2018 Academy Awards 

WEAR: Calvin Klein dress; Christian Louboutin shoes; Cartier jewelry

Compared to the over-the-top numbers the Oscars red carpet has seen in the past, Saoirse Ronan’s strapless pink Calvin Klein dress isn’t overly exuberant. But the oversize bow in the back makes this a lesson in understated elegance. This look could have been worn to the Oscars in the ‘50s or could easily make a statement well into the future. That’s what makes it iconic.

The great thing about the Oscars is that sometimes our favourite musicians will be nominated for film scores and show up wearing some of the best looks of the night—that was the case with SZA’s 2019 Oscars look. The stunning custom Vivienne Westwood dress with a corset bodice and a frayed hem had her looking like a supermodel.

The Oscars red carpet hasn’t always been known to host the most stand-out looks from nominated actors and attendees, but every once in a while, we’re blessed with a few men who aren’t afraid to go bold. It doesn’t get bolder than actor and style icon Billy Porter—who else could pull off a Christian Siriano tuxedo dress? This is an Oscars red carpet look we’ll be talking about for years to come.

WHO: Gemma Chan

WHAT: 2019 Academy Awards

WEAR: Valentino Haute Couture dress; Bvlgari jewellery; Jimmy Choo shoes 

No one has ever entirely made a case for hot pink on the Oscars red carpet like Gemma Chan. Her voluminous Valentino Haute Couture gown is something I stare at when I feel I need a reminder that there are, indeed, beautiful things in the world.

WEAR: Oscar de la Renta dress; Chopard jewellery; Christian Louboutin shoes 

The 2019 Academy Awards was a huge night for Regina King, as she not only won Best Supporting Actress for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, but she also donned one of her best red carpet looks to date. Of course, King fans are well aware that she’s often one of the most stylish characters on-screen, but the stunning white Oscar de la Renta gown paired with matching Christian Louboutin shoes proved she’s a style icon IRL, too.

WHO: Lady Gaga

WHAT: 2019 Academy Awards

WEAR: Alexander McQueen dress; Tiffany & Co. jewellery

If you weren’t already a self-proclaimed Little Monster (like myself), the 2019 Oscars could have felt as if a star was born that evening. Of course, real Lady Gaga fans know she’s served iconic looks for years; her Oscar win (for best original song), the Alexander McQueen dress, and the yellow Tiffany & Co. necklace had her shinin’ like never before.

WHO: Janelle Monáe

WHAT: 2020 Academy Awards

WEAR: Ralph Lauren custom evening dress; Forevermark jewellery

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: Janelle Monáe does not play when it comes to her style. No gown better encompasses that ethos than the crystal-lacquered silk lamé, tulle mesh Ralph Lauren gown—featuring a draped hood and an open back—she wore to the 2020 Oscars. It took over 600 hours of handwork to embroider 168,000 Swarovski crystals on the dress, making it a masterpiece we won’t forget.

WHO: Timothée Chalamet and Margot Robbie

WHAT: 2020 Academy Awards

WEAR: On Timothée Chalamet: Prada jacket and trousers; Cartier Tradition brooch

If you know, you know that Timothée Chalamet is never one to shy away from serving a look. (He’ll wear men’s jewellery with ease.) Of course, that fearlessness is sometimes met with mass critique, most recently including strong feelings around his 2020 Oscars outfit. Instead of sticking to a tuxedo, he opted for an anti-suit: a Prada Re-Nylon gabardine jacket with satin racing stripes and matching Prada Re-Nylon trousers over a white poplin shirt. He finished the look with a Cartier Tradition brooch with 18k white gold, platinum, rubies, and diamonds. While the critics may not have been here for it, I have a feeling this look will go down in history as ushering in a new way for men to approach their Oscars red carpet looks.

WHO: Sandra Oh

WHAT: 2020 Vanity Fair Oscars Party

WEAR: Cong Tri dress; Messika jewellery; Stuart Weitzman shoes

One person can bring life or death by serving a look, and that’s no other than Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh. Her 2020 Vanity Fair Oscars Party look (a grey, floor-length, sequinned, feather-embellished, deep V-neck Cong Tri dress) had me in shambles.

By now, you know that a list of the best Oscars looks of all time is subjective and ever-changing in the face of trends. Occasionally, there are hidden gems—like this Oscar de la Renta look Janet Mock wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars Party—that go unnoticed. But with time, reflection, and a whole lot of sequins, we’re able to see that the best Oscars looks of all time strike the perfect balance between being timeless and being of that time period.
