It's been a fantastic month for fans of red carpet style. First, we had the Met Gala, where celebrities like Rihanna and Laura Harrier pulled out all the stops. Now, we've set our sights on the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, which is celebrating its 78th year. The legendary event has always been the epitome of French glamour and is attended by the most stylish people in the world. To prove this point, I compiled a retrospective of the best Cannes red carpet looks of all time, including late fashion icons such as Princess Diana, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and more.

This year's festival runs until Saturday, May 24, but the outfits are already amazing. Bella Hadid, for instance, wore a Saint Laurent dress with Chopard earrings featuring 118.68 carats of emeralds and 10.31 carats of diamonds. Although we're currently enduring the chilliest stretch of winter, my thoughts are already drifting towards the brighter, lighter days of spring 2025. After months of stomping around in the same trusty black boots and trainers, I now find myself dreaming of the outfit possibilities that the warmer season will bring—particularly in the footwear department.

Initially, my spring shoe plans were straightforward: a classic pair of leather ballet flats seemed like the perfect addition to my wardrobe. But then Angelina Jolie stepped out in an outfit that was so effortlessly chic that it inspired me to take a different approach. Assembling what I dare call the ultimate transitional ensemble, Jolie wore a long-line camel coat layered over a simple black dress and paired her look with the most elegant velvet ballet flats.

Not one to get caught up in the latest trainer trends—in fact, I can count on one hand the number of times I've spotted her in trainers—instead, Jolie likes to keep her styling simple and sophisticated, opting for court shoes or sleek flats for the day to day. In this instance, the actor put a subtle yet sophisticated twist on a wardrobe staple, elevating the humble ballet flat to something truly luxurious by selecting a velvet pair.

As someone who appreciates the cosy comforts of winter, I love carrying a touch of that seasonal indulgence into early spring and few materials exude opulence quite like velvet. The softness! The richness! The velvet adds a tactile element that feels perfectly suited to those in-between days when you’re balancing lingering winter chills with the promise of spring warmth. Letting her trousers drape down to the floor, Jolie added inches to her height by wearing a pair of the Celine Elena Platform Mules (£890) instead of the ballet flats that she normally reaches for. Streamlining her look while adding height and glamour, Jolie saved her cardigan from looking too casual for her outing.

There are few constants in this ever-changing world, but one that remains unwavering is that Angelina Jolie is the queen of quiet luxury. On an afternoon in Rome, the multi-hyphenate emerged in an outfit that evokes a few adjectives: expensive-looking, elegant, refined and utterly perfect.

Full disclosure: I would probably never wear the outfit Angelina Jolie wore to JFK this week when travelling myself, but there's no denying how chic she looks. I admire her commitment to being the picture of quiet luxury at all times, especially at the airport. Jolie chose a long white dress paired with platform sandals, a lightweight black jacket, and a tote bag.

So what makes this outfit somewhat controversial? Well, the likelihood of spilling something of yourself is high on airport travel days, as your lap is basically your table for much of the day. And I'm sure you've noticed that airport and airplane seats aren't the cleanest. There's a lot of white fabric in Jolie's outfit to keep clean, but I imagine if anyone can do it, it's Jolie. For some celebrities, it's easy for them to lose their sartorial identities, especially when they have stylists making requests to dress them in the most trend-led pieces—cult items of the moment, if you will. You could, however, argue that a hood is somewhat redundant in L.A., but that's neither here nor there. As an aside, I was struck by just how versatile a coat choice hers is; a neutral robe that would live quite happily in my wardrobe for a very, very long time. Pairing it with the year's trouser silhouette to note, puddle pants, this look strikes the perfect balance of being completely and utterly timeless, whilst also appeasing the current fashion mood. Well played, Jolie. While her taupe round-toe court shoes will raise some eyebrows in the industry—it might shock you to learn that beige-tone pumps are divisive in style circles—on Jolie, they make sense.

If I were to see Angelina Jolie at the supermarket, I would want her to be wearing exactly what she was photographed in while leaving a grocery shop over the weekend. Ah, the '90s. An era defined by MTV, halter-neck tops, and more boy bands than we care to count. Some of our absolute favorite pop culture moments were born out of this decade, and when we think back on it, we can't help but relish in the wonderfully wild '90s hairstyles. And with the boom of the Y2K trend that we've seen over the last few months, it seems we're not the only ones who are feeling a little nostalgic.

From messy buns to a broad selection of fringes, and, of course, butterfly clips galore, there was something special about the hair trends from this time. The It girls of the era, such as Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and Gwen Stefani, were serving up enough inspiration to carry us right into the following decade.

Queen of minimalist street style Angelina Jolie strikes again, folks. This time, her location is New York City, and her outfit involves a dress, and it's the most classic summer dress style you can wear. She opted for a lightweight white midi style with wide straps and a tie at the waist. The only other thing she needed was a pair of sandals. She opted for a pair of low-heel tan slides that are the perfect complement to a white dress. As usual, she kept the rest of her accessories minimal with just a shoulder bag and a watch.

We'd be hard-pressed to name one dress style that's more crucial for summer than a casual white dress. It's one of the breeziest, prettiest things you can wear, and it will never go out of style. Just look at Jolie—this photo could've been from 10 years in the past or the future, and she'd still look perfectly chic and relevant.

Airport style is back, baby, and this celebrity outfit–obsessed editor couldn't be happier about it. It's hard to predict how the pandemic will have changed airport style. In a sea of red carpet froth, we can always count on Angelina to bring the sartorial antidote in the form of black gowns or sharp tailoring, bestowing the celebrity circuit with some much-needed grown-up attire.

We're well aware that celebrities and their various "naked" articles of clothing have been discussed to death, but Angelina Jolie just wore the chicest naked look we've come across in quite some time, so we'd be remiss not to bring it to your attention. Instead of going the sheer route, as is typical with the "naked" trend, Jolie wore a skin-coloured dress with classic nude pumps.

Jolie's strapless knit dress was surprisingly wearable (thanks to the fit-and-flare shape), and her accessories were polished enough to make the "naked" look feel even more chic. When Taylor Swift walked onto the Manus x Machina Met Gala red carpet, it signaled the arrival of a new Taylor. Gone was the cute, mousy blonde bob and floor-length satin pink gown she had sported in years past. Meet Rock-Chick Taylor—a look that draws a line under the 1989 tour and her T-bar shoe-clad, flippy miniskirt, twee collar–wearing girlhood. It debuted an edgier, adventurous and more exciting stage of style for the songstress. But where did it come from? Not inner angst (we presume), but the front cover of U.S. Vogue—her cover of U.S. Vogue. Naturally, Anna Wintour has reportedly been instrumental in this wardrobe overhaul.

Miley's bad-girl persona has taken over headlines so much n recent years, it is easy to forget that there was a time of Miley pre-rock. It's 1999 and Angelina Jolie is the picture of Hollywood glamour, resplendent in a shimmering halter-neck gown for the Golden Globes red carpet.

The early noughties were all about rebellious dressing for Angelina. Black and leather featured heavily in her wardrobe, she was immortalised as Tomb Raider's Lara Croft and let's not forget she married Johnny Lee Miller in black rubber pants and a white T-shirt with his name written in blood on it. As you do.

Pre-Umbrella, Rihanna’s style was relatively conventional—jeans with a cropped top, body-con dresses, flouncy minis, knee-high boots and hoop earrings. Here she is in 2006 looking like butter-wouldn't-melt in a pink bandage dress from Hervé Leger.

Then she dropped the album Good Girl Gone Bad in 2007, and life began to imitate art. Out came the PVC and patent leather. The knee-high boots upgraded to thigh-highs, and outfits were accessorised with leather gloves and plenty of studs. RiRi has never really looked back, pulling out her rock-chick persona from time to time ever since.

Think Kim, and body-con automatically springs to mind. A tube skirt is never far away, and there's always been a slight risk of any outfit falling off/apart at any moment. Only last year was her look firmly set with the glam factor dialed up.

Remember that black leather jacket—emblazoned with images of her own face and the word SLAY—that she debuted back in February this year? And the Raf Simons A/W 01 men's camo bomber that she's been sporting recently? And let's not forget the black choker paired with ripped skinny jeans… This has all been a departure for our Kim in recent months, and we like it.
