Style Notes: After relocating to London from Sydney earlier this year, Mango became a high-street solace for me when it came to investing in chic items that served my new life in the city.

As the brand isn’t available in Australia, I was instantly besotted with the way it offered expensive-looking pieces that were both trend-forward and quite different from the other stock standard styles you’d find stocked at your other favourite retailers. This tank top is the perfect example of that.

The garment itself featured a subtle V-neck, thin straps and a very fine fine-knit touch, though these qualities didn’t lead the style to look flimsy. In fact, it was the opposite, given that it was composed mainly of durable and breathable viscose—a semi-synthetic fibre derived from regenerated wood pulp. T

he plunging silhouette gave the top an opulent quality, like something you’d see stocked at Khaite’s Manhattan boutique or made by an independent luxury fashion designer. What I adored most, though, was that the style was seamless and sat flush across my chest, contributing to the tank’s sumptuous feel.

Here I’m wearing it in a size small and paired it with a whimsical white cotton poplin skirt, truly a summer outfit idea I’ll be replicating for years to come.

Style Notes: Another high-street haven, Zara offers quite a lot of different tank tops, so it was difficult to whittle it down to the piece you see here. This white tank top actually was one of the most sturdy that I tried on, with a thick touch and a built-in bra that makes it perfect for everyday wear.

I was drawn to the square neckline and thick straps, two elements that you rarely see in tank tops. And while these facts convinced me to love it when I was wearing it, it was actually the slight cowl effect that made me pick it up in the first place. Again, it lacks that bulky edge that lines some tank tops, which made it a winner in my eyes, but I did think that the way it gathered meant it wasn’t crafted with larger chests in mind. Style Notes: For Who What Wear's beauty director Shannon Lawlor, the only tank top worth considering and recommending is Loewe's anagram tank top. An item at the top of her wish list, Lawlor tells me that she purchased it in Puerto Banús while on holiday in Marbella, Spain. Don't get me wrong, though—this tank top was far from an impulse buy. "I did need approximately five glasses of sangria to just drop nearly €300 on a tank top, but I'd say that it's probably 5p in cost per wear by now," she said.

"I originally wanted the classic black stitching, and the sales associate convinced me to go for the white as it’s more timeless and less showy. It was the best advice ever," Lawlor adds. "I’ve never seen anyone else with it."

Style Notes: For the meagre price of £19, I was so pleasantly surprised by the make and quality of this & Other Stories white tank top. Truly one of the top five best tank tops that I’ve worn, this style sat quite high up my neck, making me feel more polished and streamlined compared to the other collarbone-revealing cuts. I sized up in this style, which I regret slightly, as it gaped around my arms. However, it did fit like a glove around my torso and chest, so I can’t be too admonished. It was also very longline, giving that premium and clean-cut effect that’s seen at brands like The Row and Tove.

Style Notes: When I asked around the Who What Wear office about the best white tank top they'd rate the highest, H&M's style won out with a resounding lead. After wearing it for an entire weekend, I could see why.

First of all, the fabric was heavy-duty, meaning that even the darkest bra wouldn't have a chance at peering out from beneath the fabric. Secondly, it was really lightweight, meaning that it skimmed my body nicely and even gave me a slightly cinched look. Thirdly, it's hard to turn your nose up at the price. Say what you will about deals, I think this under-a-tenner find could be the best bargain I've seen in years.

From an excursion out to Broadway Markets to a trip to the pub and even a pasta puttanesca dinner, this H&M top looked fresh and crisp through every step.

Style Notes: COS has never failed me with sleek-looking fundamentals. From the brand's style insider-beloved white t-shirt to their admirable barrel-leg jeans, I'm never let down by the styles that hit the London-based brand's shelves. All this to say, the brand's tank top lived up to this hype, but didn't necessarily stand out. It wasn't too thick or too thin, meaning that it slightly showed my bra, yet not in a way that would make me feel uncomfortable wearing it out of the house. It's made of 97% organic cotton, meaning the material felt nice under my skin, but it was slightly frail because of this. If these characteristics aren't a priority to you, consider this style like a true Golidlocks find.

Style Notes: For Who What Wear UK's video producer and editor, Natasha Wilson, the tank top that's crowned "most worn" in her wardrobe is this unfussy one from Stradivarius. As a fashion writer, I'm often bombarded with questions like what to look out for in the best white tank tops. This is because I spend more time than most previewing new collections, sitting front row and fashion shows and being privy to the inner workings of the industry. Naturally, by consequence, I spend a lot of time in changing rooms too, so I've learnt over the years the traits that separate a premium tank top from a sub-par one.

The best tank tops should be stretchy enough to move with the body and not constrict. They shouldn't discolour easily and must wash well—you do not want to be racking up hundreds of pounds on a dry cleaning bill for what is a simple tube of fabric with three holes cut out of it. Straps must be considerable in size to hide a bra strap, but not stocky. If the straps are slim, the fabric must be smooth to disguise the ridge of the strapless bra you'll be wearing underneath. Necklines should not be too low or too high, and the underarm area must be spacious enough as not to allow for bulging.

This is a strict criterion, yes. But there are tank tops that adhere to this checklist. Find one that does and you'll love it forever.

Are White Tank Tops Supposed to be See Through?

High-quality tank tops are not intended to be see-through. If a tank top is sheer, this is presumably because the fabric is thinner or more lightweight. Roksanda's eponymous line is known for its sculptural silhouettes, bold use of colour, and meticulous detail, having shown on the catwalk here in London seasonally since 2005. Twenty years later, this collection feels like a true celebration of Roksanda's legacy, paying homage to everything that her luxurious line is so famous for, as well as her dedication to empowering women through the art of dressing.

Designed with the ever-changing hues of summer sunsets in mind, the collaboration consists of ready-to-wear, shoes, and accessories. This line is simply made for the high-summer occasion season—each piece is show-stopping in its own right, and when worn as a full look, you would be hard pushed not to think it was a full-priced luxury item, fresh from the catwalk. I found the collection a real joy to wear and garnered many a compliment from passers-by when taking it for a stroll.

Without a doubt, my favourite look has to be the cream blazer and trousers. The drape feels ultra premium, form-fitting but also flowing, and the long-line ribbon detailing to the waist of the blazer feels almost bridal, reminiscent of the white suit Bianca Jagger famously wore to her nuptials in 1971. I felt like my very best self wearing this look, which I think is Roksanda's aim for every person donning her pieces. I have no doubt that this collection will open the doors to many more admiring fans, bringing further recognition and accessibility to her namesake label and world.

It was autumn last year when I finally found The One. I'm talking about the perfect pair of loafers that suit all my needs, look chic and are comfortable, and ever since, they’ve become my most worn shoe. Whilst I knew they'd work hard in my wardrobe, I’ve been surprised by just how many looks they've complemented as a finishing touch.

There's something to be said for the variety of outfits that loafers suit and the overall elevated feel they bring. Though many shoes have a chameleon-like ability to shape-shift to all occasions, few do it with the added comfort of a flat-soled loafer. Our off-duty looks of wide-leg jeans and relaxed tees instantly feel considered when a loafer is added, and the under-the-desk trainers-to-heels swap is no longer needed when heading to the office, as loafers bring a put-together finish with commute-ready comfort.

As a shoe that lends itself to all seasons, finding the right pair is important. The fit has to be right, the shape must be elegant and wearable and I demand that they shouldn't take months to break in. As a shopping editor, I'm aware of the high-end styles that fit this criteria. My own favourite pair comes courtesy of Marks and Spencer. As a more structured shape, this pair may take a week or so to break in, and if you're between sizes, I'd recommend taking the next size up. Style Notes: You've probably already seen this pair of loafers, as the brown suede style gained so much traction they sold out quickly. Intrigued, I wanted to see if the black version had as much impact as its best-selling counterpart, and I can confirm they're just so good. First, I have to comment on the sole padding, which made them so comfortable to walk in. The supple leather means that there's no squeezing required to get this pair on and you won't have to break them in. I predict these will become a pair you wear on repeat as soon as they arrive.

As a fashion editor, I may spend a lot of time searching through new-in sections and finding standout high-street pieces, but only a few items actually make their way into my wardrobe. Every item that does has to meet my high standards and be an exceptionally versatile addition worthy of taking up limited space. As a fashion editor, I'm often asked what the most versatile pieces are in any wardrobe, and it shouldn't surprise you that my answer is a classic black dress. After one of the most exhilarating London Fashion Week seasons we’ve had in a long while, team Who What Wear UK has just about settled back into our typical fashion-writing routines. Aside from our spring/summer 2024 trend report, which we’re already beginning work on, much of what we saw by way of designer presentations and runway shows won’t directly impact our style or wardrobes until next year. But of all the clothes and accessories we spotted over the five-day spectacle, there was one collection that we can start wearing right now.

Between shows, & Other Stories’ latest Savoir collection—a 16-piece-strong capsule of timeless, elevated pieces—was previewed to fashion editors, stylists and influencers, and it was impressive. Joining the brand’s ateliers to create it was & Other Stories' newly appointed concept designer Frida Billegren, whose impeccable taste and eye for quality is woven throughout this Savoir offering. Being as obsessed with Scandi style as we are (we're constantly on the hunt for items that'll help us embrace their effortless approach to getting dressed), we had high hopes for this collection and Billegren's input. Suffice to say, she did not disappoint.

As well as getting up close and personal with the collection ahead of its launch today, our editor-in-chief Hannah Almassi spent time with Billegren to find out the inspiration behind Savoir, how Scandi girls go about shopping the high street, and the pieces that help her look so damn chic 24/7.

& Other Stories concept designer Frida Billegren wears a black jacket and trousers from her new Savoir collection. 

The blank page is a daunting sight for any creative, but Billegren knew precisely where she wanted to start her design journey for this collection. "I wanted to create something that was a bit dark and slightly gothic, but then [counter it] with something opposite; something edgy with something beautiful, like ballet," she says. "Combining the worlds of modern and historical felt important, and was a big part in making the collection feel tailored. [It's a] celebration of the craft of tailoring and design."

It's clear that Billegren seeks attention to detail, not only when designing clothes, but when she invests in new pieces for her own wardrobe. We were curious to learn which high-street items she knows she can rely on to look expensive. "When I buy garments, I'm investing in a product that I'm going to wear for a very long time. So for me, quality and how [something] is made is what I'm looking closely at. And this is what I want [people] to get from this Savoir collection—pieces of high quality."

"A staple piece for me would be a suit. You can wear the suit jacket with denim or a dress. Then the pants you can wear with a T-shirt, shirt or blouse—whichever you prefer. Then, you can wear the full suit! I love to be able to dress up and dress down certain pieces. When collecting [pieces] to have in my own wardrobe, I look for things I can style in many different ways."

Another high-street item she'd struggle to live without? Leather trousers. "It's such a great piece, [especially] for the autumn season. You can wear them to work every day but they'll also work for a party or a dinner," she says. Creating the perfect pair of leather trousers proved to be a cause close to Billegren's heart, as she has included a serious contender for such an accolade in the Savoir collection. "There have been so many wide-leg [leather trousers], and that look is still super trendy, but I wanted to go back a little further, looking maybe at the '80s and early '90s to create a pair that feels [authentically] biker, but making it more tailored and clean; a straight leg that will mould to your body."

This little black dress won over every Who What Wear UK editor that saw it at the exclusive London Fashion Week presentation. 

Rounding off her high-street heroes triad? A really, really great dress. "I love finding dresses [to] treasure. Something that you'll wear for years", she confides. "I love to shop old vintage too. That's a big source of inspiration for me when I create, [like] looking at party and cocktail dresses from the '60s and '70s. It might not be so much of a staple but some clothes are art, and I love to buy things that I know I'll keep for the rest of my life."

Now might be the ideal time to draw your attention to the fact that there's a perfect specimen of a little black dress within the collection. It's a mini with a tailored bodice and a flared skirt in the chicest woollen fabric, which we saw styled both on its own and layered over a pretty white blouse at the Savoir unveiling, underlining the piece's versatility and wearability.

Scandi girls are known for their sleek approach to dressing, but how they curate their style on a budget is more elusive. We asked Billegren the burning question: How do Scandi girls set about looking for the right items on the high street? "We like the minimalistic look; the classics and things like wool, denim and jersey. But each season we might look for a new silhouette to try, like low-waisted trousers instead of high-waisted. I love Scandi [style] but I'm also very inspired by rest of the Europe. I don't see myself as dressing typically 'Scandi', but maybe I am—maybe I do!"

Finding expensive-looking items on the high street isn't easy, which is precisely why we spend so much of our time guiding you to the best affordable shopping choices. In addition to fabrics, Billegren takes a closer look at how the high-street clothes she's interested in are made. "I’m like a detective!” she quips. "Everyone should be really critical when [they’re] shopping. If you can, maybe spend a little bit more, but you can definitely find pieces to treasure on the high street. Look at the labels and keep an eye our for natural fibres—that's what I do.”

When it comes to looking elevated, the colour of your clothes can play an integral role in the payoff of your look. So which hues does Billegren rely on when she wants to look sophisticated? "Right now I'm really into dark [colours] again. I'm so obsessed with all of these warm, dark tones like burgundy and plum—we designed a beautiful one-shouldered plum dress as part of Savoir," she says. "I also like working with neutrals that are slightly tinted. Look at the fabrics in this capsule and you'll see some are tinted with green, and the greys have [undertones of] purple or lavender."

Of the many perks of my job, writing off a shopping trip as "research" is my favourite. Here at Who What Wear UK, we keep our finger on the pulse of all the new-in sections to keep you as up to date and informed as possible ahead of your next purchases. So last week I hit the high street to check out the latest additions to our favourite stores, and soon noticed that four standout shades are defining autumn/winter 2023. 

When it comes to styling, colour is a powerful tool that is all too often overlooked. There are certain hues that add an expensive feel to outfits, no matter the price point; neutral hues that are so versatile that their cost per wear is tiny and striking shades that can rejuvenate a long-relied-upon outfit. Truly, the colour of an item can be just as important as the design itself. Luckily for us, the British high street is well aware of the impact colour can have, and has a bounty of pieces to choose from across the trending spectrum this season. After trying on what felt like the entire rainbow, there were four incredible shades that I kept coming back to, and that I think will define autumn 2023.

1. SAFFRON RED

Style Notes: First, there's no denying that saffron red is having a moment. The bold hue could be spotted even from outside the shops, punctuating the new-in sections with vibrancy. I'll be honest; I've never really engaged with red. As someone who has pink-toned skin, I wrote it off as not for me, but this exact shade that keeps cropping up is a universally good tone, and I actually left this try-on with a new infatuation with the hue. Plus, wearing a standout shade definitely makes you feel powerful.

Style Notes: For many of us fans of neutrals, we too often turn to black for ease. But if you're looking to rejuvenate your selection of classic shades, brown should be a contender. Stepping into M&S, I immediately honed in on a slinky midaxi skirt and then found this exquisite faux-leather biker jacket, which deserves a special mention for the quality alone. As I strolled through other stores, I kept spotting this deep chocolate shade in all iterations from coats to trousers and a plethora of excellent accessories, too.

3. CHARCOAL GREY

Style Notes: The next shade I fell for was grey. No, not a groundbreaking hue in and of itself, but right now the high street is offering so many expensive-looking grey pieces that it can't possibly be overlooked. Unlike the array of light greys we see all year, as we move into the cooler months, thick wool styles in deeper grey weaves are taking centre stage. And this dress proves how impactful this neutral can really be.

Style Notes: Last but far from least, a classic autumnal shade has been revived for the new season. Deeper than trending saffron, burgundy tones with added notes of plum look elevated at any price point. From tailored silhouettes to relaxed styles, I spotted (and tried on) lots of great high-street burgundy pieces for autumn, and I'll admit that a few of them came home with me.

We're stepping into the most wonderful time of the year (arguably), and no, I'm not talking about Christmas. I’m talking about autumn and winter fashion—the layers, the coats, the coffee tumblers as outfit accessories—all of it. I kept my eyes eagerly peeled on the incredible street style that debuted last week at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and it for sure satisfied the part of me that missed seeing leather, blazers and chunky Chelsea boots parading the streets. I’m definitely sad to be waving goodbye to our brief (and frankly elusive) summer, but the autumn's fashion prospects are too good to not be at least a little bit excited about.

And although I feel truly in my element just after the summer months, it's admittedly hard to judge which summer items you’ll be hanging up until next year, and which you can put back to work to carry you through the next few months. This year we've seen some unpredictable summer trends emerge (Y2K disc belt, anyone?) alongside all-rounders that have stuck around. So which trends will pass the test during this next seasonal switch-up? Well, fear not. I’ve done my research and picked out four quintessential summer trends that will also blend seamlessly into autumn. Luckily, we won't be packing away our summer rotation in a hurry. 

1. SUMMER LINEN

Style Notes: Linen dominated this summer, with both elegance and practicality at its core. Whilst the climate simply won't allow us to adorn breezy linen throughout all autumn and winter, a linen jumpsuit will give you plenty of layering opportunities, with a subtle nod to summers gone. Style a linen all-in-one with a long sleeved T-shirt, high-neck shirt or jumper to keep you balanced as the weather cools off. Go one step further and bring your linen to the front of your wardrobe next season by pairing it with some pointed-toe or sock-fit boots and a leather bag.

2. CARGOS

Style Notes: Loose, cargo-style trousers are definitely here for the long haul. Offering a casual utilitarian flare to any outfit, we just need them in slightly heavier fabrics such as denim during the colder months. Until it gets really chilly, autumn calls for an understated in-between. Enter, cotton cargos. Not quite light enough for peak July sun yet not too cosy, these are a staple for summer-adjacent looks. Swap out your breezy tee or cropped tank for a jumper and fitted T-shirt, and sub the sandals for some light trainers. Just throw on a long duster or trench and you have yourself the autumn perfect errand-running uniform.

3. BALLET FLATS

Style Notes: It's going to be hard to escape ballet flats very soon. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that they've managed to sneak their way into every corner of the fashion world. Although I've definitely grabbed a couple of pairs for myself, I'm still not fully on board with the mesh flat-shoe trend. I would hate to see the humble ballet flat disappear as autumn grows close though, especially as they really don't have to.

Flats that prioritise structure—allowing for practicality in the cooler, rainier months—yet still retain their dainty elements are a must-have as we enter autumn. Paired with a perfect pair of jeans and a chic mini trench, this trend surprisingly has the potential to carry us through the transitional months and beyond. Straight, minimalistic shapes are the key to showcasing your flats in autumn. Wear them with a sleek trench and accessorise with delicate textures and a small handbag to complement the lightness of your flats.

4. ROSETTES AND CORSAGES

Style Notes: The sheer fact that this '80s embellishment has re-emerged with such flair this season is almost enough to confirm its timeless quality. Whether it be a cute addition to your outerwear, an elegant choker or a chic touch integrated into a sleek dress, the classic, three-dimensional corsage has a hold on celebrities, bloggers and Gen Z alike.

An ode to a blooming spring and bright summer, I see a lot of room for corsages in the coming months, with opportunities to adopt a black or brown leafy rosette to represent the season. Layer a long-sleeved top under an appliquéd slip dress or attach a corsage to your autumn denim. I'd also suggest wearing the trend with fluid silhouettes such as silk so as not to overshadow the appliqué. Fitted items will also help to make your outfit less bulky and draw all eyes to the rosette.

I hate to break it to you, but the current spells of sunshine that we've been waiting for aren't predicted to last, and with bouts of rain and another drop in temperatures on the horizon, it's time to start shopping sensibly. I'm not quite ready to pack away my sandals just yet (a girl can still dream), but as soon as the strong winds start to pick up and the grey skies appear, I always revert back to the same key pieces in my wardrobe to see me through intermittent spells: knitwear, a pair of jeans and a jacket. It's the classic cold-girl uniform.

As a fashion editor who is faced with the the fast-moving nature and environmental effects of the fashion industry daily, I try to be as responsible as possible when I'm shopping for myself. That means avoiding fast fashion where I can and being extremely selective about the pieces I do end up buying from the high street. In an ideal world, of course we'd all be shopping the quality and craftsmanship of luxury designers, but in reality, most of us have to be wise with our budgets at the moment, too.

So when I am shopping for more affordable buys I tend to stick to a few stores I know I can rely on for quality and classic design, like COS, Massimo Dutti and Arket. I also try to overlook the trend-led pieces being sold to me in the new-in sections—instead spending time scrolling through everything to pinpoint the most timeless buys that I know I won't get bored of after just a few weeks. 

& Other Stories is another brand I've turned to over the years for premium high street buys, but it's often the case that, whilst beautiful, its signature printed dresses and bright tailoring can feel just a little too "of the moment" for me. However, this summer I've spotted not one, not two, but three & Other Stories dresses that have really captured my attention for being incredibly chic, anti-trend and, most importantly, easy to wear. 

I'm talking about the brand's Pleated Midi Kaftan Dress, Mid-Length Polo Dress and Tank Top Midi Dress—all of which are (unsurprisingly) best sellers for the brand and have, at one point or another over the past few months, been completely sold out thanks to their popularity. The good news is that they've all been restocked (for now, at least), so I wanted to share them with you before they fly out again. 

Personally, I love that all three dresses feel really versatile and are easy to dress up or down with the simple switch of sandals to heels. I'm always on the lookout for dresses that can multitask for holidays, office days, events and more relaxed weekend wear to ensure maximum wearability, and these dresses all tick those boxes.

Their minimalist and monochromatic designs also make it really hard to pinpoint them to a specific time in fashion, meaning I'd be very happy pulling these out of my closet year after year. And lastly, I love that they're all totally ageless and would look great on anyone, from a 20 year-old to a 70 year-old (meaning there hopefully will never come a time I don't feel confident wearing them!). I do just wish & Other Stories would extend its size range above a large to be more inclusive, however.

Brittany Bathgate wears the Cecilie Bahsen plissé dress. It's high empire waistline and bubble skirt has become a cult reference in the fashion space.

SS23 catwalks clung to the sentiment of shrunken hemlines and models ushered down the runway in larger-than-life babydoll dresses, in the wake of the micro miniskirt. Cecilie Bahnsen and Simone Rocha were some of the designers to produce whimsical minis with pronounced silhouettes and taffeta aplenty.

The babydoll dress was coined in 1956, courtesy of Elia Kazan’s Baybydoll, where we were first introduced to the cotton-rich flounced nightgown, swiftly followed by Balenciaga couture and styles of the swinging ‘60s. It’s since evolved to the versions we’re familiar with today. 2023’s iterations are full and vibrant, with layers of organza, tulle and circle skirts.

Typically, babydoll dresses are defined by a pinched empire waistline, full-skirted smock element and a raised hem, however, some designers have introduced modern elements and play on longer lengths and proportions. When I think about babydoll designs with a modern lilt, I refer to Molly Goddard’s dresses which are usually favoured in costume design and formal events. Her styles are playful and evoke the essence of dressing. I can’t help but think of Abercrombie and Fitch’s viral summer dress last year, with the full-skirted component and lowered waistline. The mini shirred dress also bears a likeness, as the tautness of an elasticated waist encourages a full skirt.

Selkie, Molly Goddard and Cecilie Bahnsen are brands that have specialised in babydoll dresses long before its reclaim, with styles that convey whimsicality for the modern woman.

We’re in the midst of significant pop culture moments that have inspired ‘more is more’ dressing, from the Barbie reboot to Disney’s Live-Action The Little Mermaid, inspiring the ‘Mermaidcore’ and ‘Barbiecore’ phenomenon, and I’m certain the era of dressing up has only just begun.

Up Next: Pretty Dresses, Chic Linen and Sandals: These Are the Best Summer Sales Buys

As Who What Wear editors, we spend a lot of our working days keeping track of trending products. Especially those cult high street buys that, out of nowhere, start to be seen everywhere. It's no surprise, then, that we know all too well the power of a great & Other Stories dress. From the famous puff-sleeved numbers to their linen styles, which currently sit in what feels like a large percentage of British women's wardrobes. Stories have long been known for their ability to design a ridiculously pretty dress. 

Last year, there was one dress in particular that grabbed our attention more than any other, though: an off-white, delicate pointelle knitted midi dress with a flared sleeve, a lace-up back and an almost sheer finish. Some would say it's the perfect summer holiday dress—so good that it was hard to believe it wasn't from a chic new resortwear designer.
