Mark my words, 2025 is going to be the year of the peep-toe shoe. While pointed-toe pumps are dominating "new-in" sections right now, the advent of the new year is set to mark the renaissance of a classic.

Quietly working their way into runway collections, peep-toe shoes have been subtly regaining some ground after a fairly long hiatus—Miu Miu, Dries Van Noten and Acne Studios employed peep-toe heels for their SS25 catwalks, and where these brands go, others tend to follow. Featured in collections including Alaïa, Prada and many others, the "dated" shoe trend is marked for a roaring return to the mainstream next year.

Covering the sides of the foots whilst exposing the tips of the toes, this shoe style has been falling in and out of fashion for decades. While I might not be ready to dig out the versions that have been gathering dust in my collection since the late oughts, 2024's offerings include sleek and minimal designs that feel far more wearable for the new season.

There's no disputing it: Amal Clooney is a woman of many talents. But choosing an airport-appropriate shoe might not be one of them. As a bona fide member of the jet set crowd, Clooney is often sighted at the world's most glamorous travel destinations from Lake Como to Cannes, making her tarmac-ready outfits a perennial presence on our travel outfit mood boards.

As we enter peak travelling season—the Who What Wear UK office is alight with discussions about our mini breaks to beachy locales abroad, trips to the coast and every fashion editor holiday recommendation imaginable—we felt it was a fitting time to revisit some of her most iconic long flight looks.

There is, of course, the Sienna Miller in Anatomy of a Scandal-coded Max Mara coat she wore while at LAX or the boho Chloé and controversial netted shoe look she wore in Saint Tropez. Yet, the one that piqued our interest the most was a far from practical look she donned at the Venice Marco Polo Airport while arriving at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

Stepping out in an elegant draped jumpsuit, the lawyer and social activist paired her look with oversized sunglasses and metallic-gold wedges. Beautiful as they might be, when I saw Clooney's shoe choice, my mind immediately went to the faff at the security queue that wearing a wedge is certain to cause.

Not only would she need to go barefoot to put the shoes through the scanners, but her pair also included a buckle detail that she'd have to kneel to un-do which would hold her up on both sides of the checkpoint. Oh, and did we mention she'd have to stride barefoot across the airport floor? (Naomi Campbell in her hazmat suit could never!) To me, these pretty gold shoes just scream inconvenient.

Appropriate for the airport? No. Incredibly chic? Yes, and I can think of many an occasion where Clooney's wedges would be just the ticket—a garden party, an evening out, the finishing touch on your wedding guest dress —but not one of them involves having to pass through a security screening.

I know what you’re thinking—she probably doesn’t even go through standard security. Having never flown on a private jet myself, I’m not 100% on the process, but I assume Clooney slipped into something a little more comfortable once she boarded the plane. Still, I applaud her commitment to a look, even if it might be a very impractical one for the rest of us.

In honour of her chic ensemble, I’ve chosen some wedge heels to wear anywhere but the airport. No one does date night like George and Amal Clooney—period. Last week, the couple, who've been married since 2014 and spotted together more than usual thanks to George's press tour for his movie About The Boys in the Boat, were seen leaving Polo Bar in New York City after a dinner date at the Manhattan hot spot. And as they always do, the duo appeared the epitome of style and elegance. 

For the occasion, George pulled a George by wearing the same casual jeans-and-chore jacket look that he wore earlier in the day to the NYC premiere of the film, whereas Amal turned things up a few hundred notches, opting for a festive feather minidress, a tuxedo-style blazer embellished with fringe, and the very right-now shoe trend that *everyone* should own: metallic heels. Specifically, she chose a pair of shiny, gold stilettos. 

They might not seem like it, but metallic shoes are surprisingly versatile. Not only can they be styled à la Amal for a night out, but when paired with a minidress and blazer, they can just as easily be dressed down with jeans and a white tee (maybe that same blazer too). We might be in the middle of Paris Fashion Week, but that didn't stop an A-list crowd from attending tonight's Albie Awards in New York City. "The awards—named after Justice Albie Sachs for his seminal role in ending apartheid in South Africa—aim to shine a spotlight on brave individuals who, at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to justice," the Clooney Foundation's website explains.

When deciding what to wear to the airport, I always have two questions in mind. First: Is it easy to wear through the security check? Second: Is it easy to use the restroom in? Who is your celebrity crush? Mine is unquestionably Amal Clooney. I’ve loved her ever since she stepped out in that head-to-toe white Stella McCartney jumpsuit for her civil wedding ceremony in Venice back in 2014 (I’m still dreaming of the day I can wear that outfit) and I’ve followed her style, beauty looks and the incredible work she does ever since. From her chic and polished sense of style (which we love to wax lyrical about here on Who What Wear) to her gorgeous makeup looks on and off the red carpet, Amal never fails to give us stunning looks to ogle.

Eager to lift myself out of my own "boring” makeup rut this month, I decided to do some digging on the beauty and makeup products that Amal uses to achieve her glowing and glamorous looks—and put them to the test. It turns out Charlotte Tilbury is her makeup artist and has worked with Amal for a plethora of events from the Met Gala to Meghan Markle's wedding. We tapped into the British celebrity makeup artist and asked her to share the products she uses to give Amal such striking skin and makeup. Lucky for us, the products are all from her namesake line and readily available to shop now.

For the Met Gala

Amal looked stunning at the Met Gala in 2018, and I was hankering to re-create her glowing look for some special events coming up this summer.

I prepped my skin with the highly touted Charlotte's Magic Cream (which has a gorgeous texture), and Wonderglow Primer. I always tend to forget to put on primer, but it makes such a difference to start your look with a soft, smooth canvas. This one gives a beautiful lit-from-within base.

I may have overdone it on the Hollywood Beauty Light Wand Highlighter, (a little goes a long way), but it was so darn beautiful I couldn't help myself. I applied it to the inner corners of my eyes and my cheekbones. I'm not great at doing a cat eye but the Audrey eyeliner pencil glides on easily and is essential to make eyes pop.

I don't tend to wear red lipstick very often, especially one that looks so, well, red! But I'm definitely going to start wearing it more often, as I felt it brightened up my whole face and added a touch of Hollywood glamor to my look. Screen Siren has a bold, matte finish and even if I'm not wearing any makeup—this will unquestionably add a French-girl touch to my beauty look.

For the Royal Wedding: 

I love Amal's soft and pretty makeup look, which was perfect for a (royal!) spring wedding. I'll definitely be copying this look again for every upcoming spring and summer soirée. 

I was surprised at the instant glowing impact of the Eyes to Mesmerize eye shadow (Jean is my favorite). A little goes a long way, and the creamy texture makes it really easy to apply (I would do it with your fingers for a better blend.)

But what really stood out was the gorgeous lipstick. I'll be honest, at first glance both Bond Girl and Walk of Shame look rather dark and intimidating, but surprisingly when blended together they create a lovely dark pink shade that is super flattering on all skin tones.
