I like to think I've mastered the art of airport footwear. I have to be honest—of all the outfits I may plan, airport looks are at the absolute bottom of the list. But no question is more pressing in my mind right now than this one: How on Earth did you get through airport security wearing Balenciaga's controversial Pantaleggings? 

The trousers in question were worn by Beckham on a flight into New York City's JFK Airport alongside a cinched cargo-style jacket, a black clutch bag, and oversize sunglasses of her own design. Style Notes: Filing this under "outfits to wear when taking a train or a flight under two hours". This outfit is a capsule-wardrobe winner. People talk about having airport meet-cutes, and I picture myself wearing this when the time comes. I love the sweater thrown over the trench, which is one less thing to pack.

Style Notes: If you're like me, airport outfits usually consist of an athletic set. I am a fan of these when I'm taking a trip to a warm, sunny destination. Athleisure sets have been the lazy girl's saving grace for airport outfits since their conception, and I believe the best place to wear them besides the gym is the airport. Jennifer Lopez has truly defined her personal style and rarely strays from it, however I can't help but question the practicality of her outfit on her most recent trip to the airport. We all know celebrities are often exempt from sensible decision making when travelling, but the decision to wear a denim boiler suit seems, well, a tad impractical. Again, no issues with denim, obviously, but wearing a one-piece on a flight? That's a no from me, J.Lo. In fact, it breaks my cardinal rule of airport dressing: no jumpsuits.

There was once a time when I didn't think too hard about what I would wear to the airport. The only criteria was that it be cute and not too sloppy. But after years of being uncomfortable and annoyed by my outfit choices, I've finally reformed. I have some summer travel on the horizon, and there are a few things you can bet you won't see me wearing in the terminal.

One of the more challenging things about dressing for the airport in the summer is changing temperatures. While airport terminals and planes are often freezing, it's likely sweltering outside the airport. While I still struggle with what to wear to get around this temperature predicament, I'm always confident about what I'm not wearing on summer travel days.

Below is the list of items I'll never wear to the airport in the summer and what you'll catch me wearing instead. 

Skipping: Shorts

Wearing: Loose Trousers and Jeans

Call me a germaphobe, but the idea of my bare legs touching anything on a plane is the definition of icky. But since it's probably going to be hot when I step outside the airport, I always make sure the pants or jeans I wear are loose to allow for airflow.

In terms of safety, airplanes and airports aren't the best places to have your feet exposed. And if you've ever had to run to catch a connecting flight in flip-flops, you probably told yourself you'd never make that mistake again.

While leggings at the airport are perfectly acceptable during autumn and winter, they can feel a bit suffocating during long, hot summer days. Long casual dresses, on the other hand, are a great comfortable alternative.

Wearing: Breathable Cotton and Linen

This one is pretty simple. Clothing that's made of 100% polyester will not breathe. A blend of fabrics is usually fine, but 100% polyester is a sweaty travel day waiting to happen. Your best bet is to wear 100% cotton, except when it comes to jeans—whatever you do, don't wear stiff 100%-cotton jeans.

Full disclosure: I would probably never wear the outfit Angelina Jolie wore to JFK this week when travelling myself, but there's no denying how chic she looks. I admire her commitment to being the picture of quiet luxury at all times, especially at the airport. Jolie chose a long white dress paired with platform sandals, a lightweight black jacket, and a tote bag.

So what makes this outfit somewhat controversial? Well, the likelihood of spilling something of yourself is high on airport travel days, as your lap is basically your table for much of the day. Little did I know, when conversing over email with expert travel guru and content creator Lucy Wiliams, that I would bump into her at Gatwick airport just a few days later. We were on the same work trip to Menorca, and I could see that the answers she provided me when I grilled her about her airport outfit essentials (and no-nos) were all true and in action IRL. She is a seasoned traveller who goes on multiple trips a year (if not a month—honestly, following her on Instagram is dangerous affair for my bank account in so many ways), and as such as she has all the answers when it comes to dressing practically and stylishly in-between destinations. 

Thanks to Williams's latest collaboration dropping with jewellery brand Missoma (a best-selling partnership that has now been going since 2015, can you believe it?), we had a chance to catch up on all things holiday and packing-related, and I think you'll take some infinitely useful information from the below guidance. So bookmark this page ahead of your next trip and come back to her dos and don'ts of airport outfitting.

1. Elevate the Super-Casual

"I try and find the balance between really comfy and not looking like a total mess the other end," says Williams. "If I’m doing transatlantic for work I’ll wear my Suzi Kondi cashmere trackies, New Balance trainers or my Adidas Gazelles, some kind of cashmere sweater or oversized hoodie with a leather biker jacket or long overcoat. I always think a great coat or jacket, simple earrings like the new Lucy Williams x Missoma two tone mini entwine hoops and nice sunglasses can disguise how scruffy you are in an instant! I also just discovered Canadian brand Eterne and am obsessed with their super soft jersey lounge pants for travelling. American Vintage also do the best tracksuits. I always take a thick pair of wool socks too for the plan."

2. Never Wear Sandals

"I always prefer wearing trainers and socks over sandals or slip-ons, even if I’m heading somewhere hot. I hate it if you have to take them off and suddenly you are bare foot in an airport," says Williams, and I couldn't agree more. Been there, done that, got the dirty feet to prove it.

3. Avoid Silks, and High-Waisted Cuts

"I always think silk looks so chic but it’s just not cosy enough for me on planes. Also anything too tight-fitting or high-waisted is just uncomfortable to sit in." Instead, you'll often see Williams sporting silhouettes such as drawstring-waist pajama style trousers, looser-fit jeans and dungarees or her aforementioned trackies. 

4. Up Your Layering Game

"If I’m going somewhere hot or tropical for holiday, I’ll wear some kind of cotton canvas wide leg or pyjama style trousers, a white tee and a big oversized denim jacket (I love my brown one from Raey right now) with a cashmere jumper or cardigan on hand for the plane (why are planes always SO cold?). Layers are super useful when travelling so I’ll often start with a tank, then have a long sleeve tee (Skims are the best) and then have a cardigan or hoodie and a jacket to take on and off depending on what I need," says Williams.

"If I’m changing climates and going from cold to hot, I’ll take some kind of striped or plain white collared shirt in my hand luggage and will swap my sweater for that before we land over a plain white tank."

Whenever I book a getaway, be it on home soil or at a greater distance, my thoughts keep returning to one thing. Unlike most people I know, I love packing. From the mental planning of which outfits I want to sport as I stroll down sunny boulevards and sip Mojitos on the beach, to the actual process of rolling up my new cotton dresses and stuffing them in my suitcase, the experience only makes me more eager to get going. And while I usually nail the contents of my luggage (after *a lot* of consideration and last-minute changes), I've always struggled with what to wear as I board the plane (or car, train, bus... Style Notes: A long stint on an airplane calls for a pair of elasticated-waist trousers, comfort is key after all—for me, nothing else will do. But how to look chic when you're going long haul? Despite their jobs sending them around the world for films and press tours, celebrities have never been very tactical when it comes to airport dressing. Stilettos, rigid jeans, over-the-knee boots… You name it, and a celebrity has, despite the discomfort, worn it to sit on a plane for a long period of time. But in all my years of reporting on celebrity style, never have I seen someone wear an outfit as controversial as the one Margot Robbie was spotted in at the Sydney Airport this month. 

Don't get me wrong. She looked incredible. Dressed in a white tank top and mid-rise, slouchy "jeans," the Babylon actress appeared as comfortable as ever when she arrived in Sydney for the premiere of the film. But looks can be deceiving. As any fashion person will tell you, her trousers aren't made of denim, but rather leather. And I can't think of anyone willing to wear leather trousers to the airport. 

Continuing her recent streak of wearing Bottega Veneta by Matthieu Blazy looks, Robbie and her stylist Kate Young plucked the £4390 leather pants from the brand's autumn/winter 22 collection, pairing them with baby-blue square-toe mules and the crossbody version of Prada's Re-Edition 1995 handbag for her long travel day to Australia. While I'm struggling to wrap my head around the comfort value of leather trousers in a scenario like this one, I can't really blame Robbie for this style choice. After all, when you get the chance to wear anything from Blazy's recent collections—let alone one of the most iconic looks from the show—you take it, whether it's a travel day or not. We're used to seeing photos of Katie Holmes either walking the streets of NYC in stylish outfits, or on the red carpet. But this time, she was photographed at the airport, making a post-Christmas return to the city. And as is always the case with Holmes, she was dressed in a practical outfit that was as stylish as it was wearable.

As someone who prefers to wear jeans over leggings or trackies to the airport, I love seeing a celebrity travel outfit that includes jeans that are actually comfortable. The instances of celebs wearing stiff, high-waisted jeans to the airport are well-documented, but Holmes opted for a pair of loose wide-leg jeans in a light wash. Collectively, as a team of editors, we've travelled a ton. Some of us even hop on more than 30 flights in the span of a year, and others have travelled to over 30 countries. All these in-flight hours have amounted to our team perfecting the art of packing (hello, ever heard of the 54321 trick for packing light?) and the art of the airport outfit—trust us, airport style is a thing.
