I practically jumped at the opportunity to road-test autumn's trending trainers, i.e. the trainers I love but don't need (or have the wardrobe space for). My go-to shoe for a fair few years, I like to think of myself as somewhat of a trainer aficionado who can keenly spot a trending style on the horizon, which I'd always choose over the equivalent loafers or ballet flats.

Of course, not all trainers are built the same and can claim the coveted title of one of the pairs of the season. From timeless white trainers to buzzy drops like the New Balance X Miu Miu collab, which is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after designer trainer collections to date, there are a few telltale signs which signal when a style is destined to be a sellout. Firstly, they seamlessly slot into a capsule wardrobe, providing outfit versatility and styling ease (essentially, you can wear them again and again and they'll still feel elevated).

Secondly, you'll spot them on those in the know. 1. Dries Van Noten Leather-Trimmed Sneakers

My Review: With a retro '70s mood sweeping the trending trainer scene, slimeline styles featuring skinny soles and rounded toes can feel like a dime a dozen, but Dries Van Noten's Leather-Trimmed Sneakers stand miles above the rest. Quietly drawing Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber as fans, these trainers feature clean lines, a supple suede finish (unless you go for the leather and fabric iteration) and a complementary two-tone colour palette, offering all the ease of a classic trainer with a fresh 2025 twist. I've noticed them taking the place of Adidas Sambas in the outfits of chic Instagram users, so trying them was a must.

Fitting like a glove, their no-fuss design instantly elevates anything they're worn with. Much to my dismay (as I was desperately hoping these wouldn't be as good IRL as they looked online, owing to the more premium price tag), they lived up to their hype. The flat sole offers little cushioning, but that's part of their beauty—they almost mould to your feet. This gives them another draw I constantly look for when on the hunt for trainers: they make your feet look dainty. Now, anyone with large feet will understand this struggle. Most trainers, from chunky to flat-soled pairs, tend to exaggerate my shoe size, but these? They do the opposite; their slimline, sculptural build gives the illusion of petite feet without sacrificing their trending edge.

Whether you go for the classic tan suede colourway to the best-selling Bordeaux leather-and-fabric style—both key autumn 2025 colour trends—you'll have the perfect subtle pop of colour to balance your casual autumn outfits with a laid-back edge, rather than have your trainers make the whole look feel dishevelled and unpolished.

To put them to the test, I tried the suede pair with a fail-safe autumn capsule-wardrobe combination: light denim jeans, a thick, chunky knit and a khaki trench coat, and they looked every bit as polished as I was hoping they would. I styled the Bordeaux variation with the best-selling Dries funnel-neck jacket over the same jeans and knit. With its balloon sleeves, high collar and cotton-wool blend, it's both relaxed and structured, with a great weight that makes it perfect for layering. Chic, wearable and fashion-forward, these are definitely a pair I’d say are worth your time and money.

2. COS Minimal Leather Trainers

My Review: Now that we’re on the same page that slimline trainers are back, it would be remiss of me not to mention COS's minimal leather trainers. Spotted on influencer Lucy Williams at the brand's spring/summer 2025 show in Athens, there was a distinct buzz in the Who What Wear UK office when these designer-looking trainers hit shelves. Now, I know what you’re thinking: high-street trainers? But hear me out. Known for their high-quality craftspersonship and ahead-of-the-trend designs, COS does trainers better than its competitors, in my humble opinion. Made from a 100% suede shell and soft leather lining, these honestly aren't too dissimilar in style from the aforementioned Dries Van Noten style. Instead of a round toe, though, they have a slightly square shape, along with a thicker, ridged rubber sole and leather-accent trims. To me, they're like a hybrid between the Nike Cortez vintage running design and the motorsport silhouette of the new Adidas Taekwondo, resulting in a minimalistic trainer that's truly wearable.

Again, I tried true to size and was pleasantly surprised. They felt snug with thick socks but not too tight (and remember, leather trainers naturally soften and give). Each colourway is contemporary without being overtly trendy or trying too hard. The pony-hair pair in particular looks so luxe IRL, and is an easy way to dip into one of autumn's biggest shoe trends. However, the suede style left me slightly disappointed. A pair taken from the shop floor, I couldn't help but notice the discolouration in the black suede. Likely a result of repeated try-ons, there were paler spots where the shoes had seemingly rubbed against each other or another item of clothing, causing the dye to fade somewhat. This is the beauty of try-ons, though; I can truly test out an item for you before you buy, and had I purchased sight unseen, I wouldn't have been best pleased about this.

To give the trainers a proper road-test, I styled them with some of COS's key pieces for autumn: the Sculpted Merino Wool Jacket and the gloriously soft Brushed Cashmere Cardigan, both of which surpassed my expectations. The jacket is lightweight and fluid, a perfect transitional piece crafted from 100% wool, whilst the cardigan, which I've tried on before, was every bit as soft as I remembered. All in all, these trainers are perfect for those looking for a pared-back, easy-to-style shoe with a high-end feel that won't break the bank.

3. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

My Review: When I saw our senior shopping editor, Marina Avraam, rocking a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 trainers a few weeks ago, I was reminded just how great they are. Thin-soled and available in bright colours, the Mexico 66 features crossover stripes with an aesthetic reminiscent of Adidas Samba and Gazelle, just not as mainstream. Finding fans from fashion people to supermodels (Bella Hadid, here's looking at you), the popular neon yellow colourway was originally worn by Uma Thurman with her iconic yellow-and-black two-piece from Kill Bill Volume 1, which was released in 2003.

4. Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers

My Review: Now, I need to preface this by saying that I am not a fan of the Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers, and thus won't be subscribing to the "sneakerina" trend. From Iris Law to Dua Lipa, fashion's It girls have been gravitating towards this ballet flat-trainer hybrid for a romantically cool edge for some time now. With a low-profile design complete with several straps that bind the shoe to the foot, these ballet trainers offer all the comfort of a trainer (thanks to the rubber sole) whilst retaining a delicate aesthetic only ballet flats can achieve.

Because of my initial scepticism, I put these trainers to the test—hard. And as I sit here typing this, I have to eat my words. Surprisingly, they delivered, and my mind might be changed. The rubber sole makes them super-comfortable, especially if you’re someone who racks up 10,000 steps a day like me. The straps hold your feet in place, and the cut is just high enough that there's no toe cleavage on show (which is my preference). I stayed true to size, and the fit was spot on.

Adding a playful finish to the everyday blue jeans I was wearing when I tried them on, they added an IYKYK feel to my casual 'fit. Upon leaving the store, I suddenly found myself surrounded by a multitude of fashion people who had added delicate ballet satins and a plethora of charms to make them more individual. Dakota Johnson is one of those celebrities whose taste I really trust. I would wear almost everything that she wears, and that includes her shoes. Much to my delight, Johnson has been out and about in NYC quite a bit this week, as she promotes her upcoming film, Materialists, and each of her outfits have been filled with trends and classic pieces.

Having reflected on my favourite trainer styles, I've noticed they all share something in common: they go with all my favourite outfits. As a trend-forecasting fashion editor, I have dedicated a lot of time to considering the key trends that will dominate the fashion scene in 2025. In the realm of footwear, I have determined that two trainer styles will make a significant impact in the coming year. These are the Adidas Taekwondo shoes and Puma Speedcat sneakers, both of which started generating substantial interest last year among chic fashion people in London and Paris.

These two styles have strong roots in sports and are making a comeback in the fashion world thanks to their minimal yet stylish designs that almost resemble ballet flats, which are a European favourite. In the last few years, the Samba has been cemented as the trainer to own, and finding an in-stock pair was a part-time job in itself. Then, the Spezial began gaining traction for its similar streamlined silhouette as well as the versatility of colourways that tapped into fashion’s movement to colourful accessories. At the same time, we noticed the adoration of the humble Gazelles beginning to grow, as well as the reissued SL 72’s making their way into every fashion person’s collection. So, I think it's safe to say that Adidas has dominated the trainer world even more than ever recently.

In fact, one of my most asked questions as a fashion editor is "which Adidas trainers are most popular right now?" so I thought with spring on the horizon, now was the perfect time to decode this question.

Adidas has managed to set itself apart from all other trainers around by leaning into the pared-back aesthetic that has taken hold of fashion in recent seasons—the streamlined silhouettes of these reissued legacy shoes are perfectly primed to do well. The shapes are versatile, pairing with everything from tailoring to denim, to spring-ready dresses thanks to their understated feel. But we're also seeing bold, standout colours continue to thrive in footwear, with everything from metallics to vibrant shades catching the eye of fashion people.

Instead of creating a brand new shoe to take on the seasonal trends, Adidas has turned back to the classics, with the Adidas team suggesting that some of its OG styles such as the Superstar II and Japan will be making their way back into our wardrobes this year. You can also rest assured that Samba and SL 72 styles that have been key for a few seasons now are sticking around, but if it is newness you're after, the slip-on Taekwondo Mei that has just launched for spring is set to be huge news. 1. Adidas Japan

Style Notes: First launched in the 1960's during the Tokyo Olympics, the 'Japan' trainers are now stealing the limelight once again. I tried the timeless white pair with black stripes and I was instantly convinced. They feel ever more streamlined than the Samba, with the slim sole and more narrow toe. For this reason, I sized up by half a size to make sure they weren't too tight, and this made them the perfect fit. They're one of those everyday throw-on-and-go styles I know I'll wear on heavy rotation no matter my plans.

2. Adidas Taekwondo

Style Notes: This is a sneaker style that felt completely new to me. I've never worn a pair without laces, but as soon as I put them on, I liked them a lot more than I thought I would. Firstly, the colour. I'm yet to hop onto the red trainer trend, and now I'm unsure why when they can make even the simplest of outfits feel fun. I sized up a full size in these and I would definitely recommend doing this, or at least a half size as you have to pull them on and the tongue is quite rigid to begin with. I predict the cow print pair will be as popular as the cow print Samba's this season.

3. Adidas SL 72

Style Notes: Originally launched as a running shoe in 1972 (hence the name), this shoe has been adapted by fashion people as a relaxed finish to everyday outfits. Even celebrities like Bella Hadid are fans of the slightly sporty design and I'm now joining the long list of SL 72 supporters. With bold, retro trainers being a S/S 25 catwalk favourite at the likes of Prada and Miu Miu, I just know the loudest of colour combos will be key this year. I originally didn't think this blue pair would be my vibe but I've loved wearing them with jeans. Super comfy, I sized up half a size just to be on the safe side but I would say they're actually true to size.

4. Adidas Samba

Style Notes: If there's one Adidas style that's dominated the fashion space in the last few years, it's the Samba. Loved by every fashion insider, they've proved to show longevity with the continuous launch of new cool colours and prints. It was only last month that the new leopard and cow iterations sold out within minutes of dropping online, proof the demand is still there. And I for one am happy about the situation considering they're one of those styles that work effortlessly with any outfit. Go half a size up—and keep a look out for this burgundy pair coming back in stock on the Adidas website very soon.

5. Adidas Superstar II

Style Notes: The Superstar II was launched in the '90s, having a slightly different toe shape than the OG Superstar from the '70s. The low-top basketball vibe is one that will always be iconic to Adidas, and I can confirm how comfy they are. The platform sole and padded inner makes it feel like you're walking on a cloud. As a chunkier style, I would suggest taking your usual size for this one. Adidas told me both the white and black styles have been increasingly more popular recently, so no doubt they're about to make a comeback for the new season.

Perhaps it's because Dakota Johnson resides in a warmer climate than us Brits, or maybe it's her A-list inner circle keeping her up to date, but the actor does seem to be that bit ahead of the rest of us when it comes to styling the latest spring trends. Her latest look involves a jeans and trainer combination with a fashion-forward twist. Stepping out in L.A., Johnson selected a pair of bright white cropped jeans for the base of her look. With a fresher feel than any blue, black or grey pair, white jeans offer an easy way to lighten up an outfit for the spring and summer months without any extra effort.

Tapping into another growing spring trend, she styled her cropped jeans with a pair of sage green Adidas trainers. If you're anything like us here at Who What Wear UK, you may have spotted so many colourful Adidas Gazelle trainers gracing our feeds and appearing on our daily journeys alike. Let's face it, the past 12 months have given us a lot to talk about in the way of shoe trends (and if last year wasn't the year that you bought a pair of ballet pumps, mid-heel boots, Margiela Tabis, moto boots, or kitten-heel slingbacks, what exactly were you wearing?). Forgive me, reader, as I must confess to being easily trend-led and distracted by the new and shiny styles that pop up on the runway, but this year was the year that I decided to make the sensible decision to invest in comfort as much as aesthetic, and trainers were the starting point. The pairs that I do own, I've been wearing for years; a testament to their enduring versatility, so for those on the hunt for a new shoe style to get behind, this one won't require regular trips to the cobbler.

Style Notes: Anything Miu Miu touches, turns to gold—just look at the rise of the ultra micro mini or the polo shirt, for example. So when the latest New Balance collaboration set foot down the runway for spring/summer 2024, there was no doubt in our minds that muted tones of beige, brown and cream were set to be the next trainer trend. And of course we weren't wrong, with the likes of Loewe, Salomon and The Row solidifying these earthy shades as the autumn go-with-everything heroes. Similar-toned socks in earthy shades is a fail proof choice, but bright colours are also a good option if you're looking to add interest to your outfits.

Style Notes: After the first drop of the Grace Wales Bonner X Adidas trainer collaboration landed and sold out almost immediately, we knew we'd have to be shrewd to get our hands on the next buzzy release, but we couldn't have predicted just how popular these uber-cool trainers would be. From the exaggerated tongue to the knee-high sock styling, the latest drop of Sambas is a loving homage to vintage football fashion. Take a look at the Ancuta Sarca and Cormio runways (pictured above) for a quite literal reinvention of the football boot that can be worn on and off the pitch. Style Notes: Looking to pair one of 2024's biggest flat-shoe trends with the comfort of trainers? The ballet sneaker is your answer. Originally appearing in Simone Rocha's S/S show in 2021, the style has consistently made it's way back onto the runway year after year. For 2024, Simone Rocha brought the iconic shoe back with velcro straps to add to the sporty element, but there are also a lot of lace-up iterations on the market as well. Go without socks on milder days but a cosy cashmere style will look just as chic when its chilly.
