If I hear Amal Clooney’s name, I immediately conjure up an image of floaty layers drifting across the Italian Riviera, or her sitting back in style as she’s whisked across the ocean on a yacht. In every instance, she’s wearing colour, pattern or print, and you can guarantee she’ll be strapped into a pair of tall sandals or towering wedges. What I’ve come to understand is that I’ll rarely, if ever, catch Amal in a flat shoe. Which is exactly why, when I spotted her winding through the airport terminals this week, I did a double take.

Whilst it might not be the most “Amal” choice, her brown slip-on sandals were, in fact, a particularly practical option for her stint in the sky. With autumn finally in full swing, I've at last been reacquainted with my wardrobe's strongest asset: my jeans collection. After months of sidestepping denim in favour of lighter, more seasonally appropriate styles, the recent drop in temperatures has sent me straight back into the depths of my wardrobe. In my opinion, black loafers against pale blue denim that can sometimes feel a little stark. Cognac brown, on the other hand, feels softer and more harmonious against the paler tones of blue denim. Whilst Elsa has inspired me to embrace the shade in an autumn-ready loafer, the colour trend would work just as well in the form of a heeled boot, sleek ballet flat or pointed-toe pump.

Whilst I especially love the way cognac brown looks with a mid-wash pair of jeans, I can see it working just as well with bright white denim or a darker wash. Opting for a lighter shade of brown also retains a lightness, making it an easy choice for these early-autumn days.

As any petite fashion person will know all too well, the right shoe can make or break an outfit—and on Florence Pugh’s outing in Venice this week, I can confidently confirm that the shoe did, in fact, make it. Early autumn is perhaps my favourite time of year, not least of all because it affords me the opportunity to embrace my long-time favourite accessory: tights. Wrapped up in a cream jacket and topped with a pair of oversized sunglasses, Kate kept her styling uncomplicated and chic. At last confirming that my tights can look just as chic with a minidress and ballet flats as they do with any heeled boot, I'm ready to take this styling inspiration to the ground. As sycophantic as this sounds, I am somewhat of a self-confessed Olsen Twins-style historian. Despite The Row being the patron saint of quiet luxury, Mary-Kate has proved that even members of fashion’s upper echelon aren’t immune to the allure of a pair of humble sneakers. Of course, given the fact that it is an Olsen Twin that we’re discussing, we shouldn’t assume that her shoes would be anything but extraordinary.

Though trainers have garnered quite the cultural cachet through collaborations like Nike x Jacquemus and Adidas x Wales Bonner, Mary-Kate’s pair is actually a true holy grail for sneakerheads and collectors alike. With contrasting trimming and Western-style elements, the pair can be traced back to a partnership Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto completed with Adidas in 2002.

Of course, in an era where luxury handbags have been co-opted by stylish men, it should come as no surprise to see that they’ve turned their attention to trainers as the latest streetwear item to hold cultural cachet. As everyone claimed, 2026 is the new 2016, and this feels completely fitting for the streetwear mania that swept that year.

Still, both Harry and Jacob do a lot of unexpected publicity for sharing a wardrobe with your significant other—hello: couple dressing—so don’t think that this style is exclusively for the guys, either.

Of course, the drama and prestige of the Venice Film Festival will always command my attention. But I have to admit that when these major calendar moments roll around, and a hive of celebrities descends on one small, localised area for a week or two of high-octane glamour, I'm often far more interested in the off-duty outfits spotted in between events. With the Venice Film Festival well underway, I've been street-style spotting to my heart's content, taking note of the wearable staples off-duty celebrities are backing right now. And, after a week of sightings, I've spotted one new-season jeans trend that I'm now convinced many of us will be wearing next. Spotted not once, not twice, but thrice, it seems everyone in Venice is styling low-rise bootcut jeans right now.

Putting me onto the growing denim trend, I spotted actor Emma Corrin strolling along the cobblestoned pathways of Venice in the trending silhouette, choosing a perfect mid-wash shade of blue. Styled with a simple white tank top and white gum-sole trainers, Emma's jeans puddled around their shoes, giving the look a relaxed, unfussy finish.

Had I not already been convinced that the silhouette was on the rise, I then spotted Nicola Peltz Beckham wearing the very same trend as she touched down in Venice. Also on board with the white-top styling formula, Nicola paired her ever-so-slightly darker blue jeans with a white boat-neck, three-quarter-sleeve T-shirt and black sunglasses. Finished with black heels and a Chanel shoulder bag, her take was a little more polished, without losing the understated energy that makes this denim trend so appealing.

And, within the very same scroll, Suki Waterhouse confirmed my suspicions: low-rise bootcut jeans are about to become one of the silhouettes of the season. Edging high-rise jeans out of their safe spot as the default denim choice, the low-rise resurgence brings a playful, nostalgic energy to the look, while the subtly flared leg adds even more personality.

As Emma, Nicola and Suki have demonstrated, low-rise bootcut jeans make a particularly natural pairing with any type of white top, but I can also see them looking just as chic with a silky black blouse or styled with one of the season's favourite raglan tees.

I know that leggings don't immediately conjure images of chicness, but after years of documenting women with great taste, I've come to realise there are, in fact, plenty of ways to make leggings look polished. As a beauty editor, part of my job is to report on nail trends, but also pedicure trends that I see emerging on the most well-heeled of feet season to season. Over the summer, I observed the rise of the bare pedicure on tastemakers, quickly following in the footsteps of the bare nail trend we saw earlier in the summer. And for autumn, it seems the fashion set is still forgoing full pedicure colours on their toes, but with an upgrade on the totally bare look.

Rather than a standard French pedicure with a crisp, defined line, these toes have a healthy flush of sheer pink polish, but paired with a sheer, soft French tip that looks entirely natural. It's like "no-makeup" makeup for your toes.

This natural-looking French pedicure doesn't just make your feet look immaculately manicured, but it's also a great transitional summer-to-autumn pedi trend to tide you over between the seasons, and it will go with any outfit or open-toed shoes in your wardrobe. In the summer months, the actor favours micro-mini shorts, boxy tees, tanks and little dresses, while come autumn, I’d expect to see her swap these out for fur-trimmed jackets, trench coats and plenty of suede. Rather than her go-to pretty ballet flats, Zoë opted for a pair of rubberised, open-toe slide sandals instead.

Rendered in an inky black, these slip-on shoes aren’t far removed from the well-worn pairs that line many a garden door, ready to be stepped into for taking the bins out or pottering around outside. Ultra-casual and hard-wearing, they’re hardly the silhouette I’d expect to see on one of fashion’s most stylish dressers.

And yet, by styling this controversial flat, Zoë joins a growing line-up of chic celebrities reclaiming the ubiquitous plastic slip-on. With the likes of long-time style icon Jennifer Lawrence already giving the practical shoe her seal of approval, perhaps these purpose-made sandals are finally ready for their fashion moment.

I'm sure Kendall Jenner isn't quite as prone to scuffing, spilling or generally mishandling her clothes as I am, so perhaps that's why she had the confidence to jet-set in the sleek neutral shade I would never dare travel in. Because, as elegant as cream may be, it is also spectacularly prone to showing up every single mark, spill and scuff—and when you're travelling, there are plenty of opportunities for all three.

Choosing the elegant, albeit impractical, hue for an almost head-to-toe look, Kendall skipped the far more sensible shades of black or navy and instead styled a sleeveless cream top with a tonal pair of trousers. Between lugging luggage overhead, perching on airport seats that have cushioned thousands of travellers before you and attempting to eat in transit without a proper table in sight, I simply can't imagine taking the risk of wearing such a fresh, unforgiving shade. However, I have to admit that, if you can somehow manage to keep it spotless, cream might just be one of the chicest colours you can opt for. It makes an outfit feel brighter and fresher, without requiring you to introduce any particularly bold or garish hues.

Leading the charge, I spotted Tracee Ellis Ross styling not one, but two pairs of elegant high-vamp flats. A more covered-up take on the classic ballet flat silhouette, high-vamp shoes feature a leather upper that extends further up the foot, offering a little more coverage than their lower-cut counterparts. As the weather cools and open-toe shoes become less practical, this higher-coverage silhouette offers protection for early autumn, without sacrificing the sleek, comfortable feel that makes flats such a good everyday choice.

Tracee opted for both black and white pairs, styling them with relaxed straight-leg jeans, cuffed just-so at the ankle. Paired with a simple white T-shirt and tote bag, the flats lent her casual look a more polished energy—one that, dare I say, a pair of trainers simply couldn't have matched.

In another chic styling move, Tracee paired her black flats with a pair of cropped trousers. Picking up on another silhouette that's set to be everywhere this season, the cropped trousers brought lightness to the outfit whilst complementing the polished feel of the flats.
