People always ask me where I find inspiration, and honestly, I never travel looking for it. Over the past decade, living in France, I have attended what feels like 852 French weddings. I have been to more French weddings than any other type of social event in my life. Children’s birthday parties now come in a respectable second, though they’re nowhere near as competitive. Why so many? It’s not that I have an impossibly large social circle, though my husband does have an impressive number of first cousins. It’s that the French, with their passionate devotion to the separation of religion and state, often have two weddings per couple.

Before any religious ceremony can take place, couples are legally required to marry at their local mairie (city hall). Their forthcoming union is announced publicly on a noticeboard outside the building (to give anyone in the vicinity with just cause the chance to dispute the union), after which they may proceed with whatever religious celebration they choose (or not). For many couples, these become two entirely separate events: a civil wedding in the city, followed weeks or months later by a larger, countryside celebration.

Then there are the hen dos, which the French charmingly call "l’enterrement de vie de jeune fille"—literally, "the burial of the young woman’s life." (Men receive the same treatment.) That’s potentially three separate occasions requiring three separate outfits. More, if you’re the sort of person who likes an outfit change. As someone who loves weddings but also values efficiency, I’ve spent years taking notes. Somewhere around my 20th French wedding, I realised that French women approach wedding dressing quite differently from their English counterparts. Their goal isn’t perfection, but it’s endurance, because French weddings aren’t just photo ops; they’re marathons. Here are the lessons I’ve learned.

1. Comfort Always Wins

There is nothing—and I mean nothing—worse than spending 12 hours trapped inside an uncomfortable outfit. The biggest mistake wedding guests make is dressing for the arrival rather than the event itself. French weddings routinely begin in the afternoon and continue until the small hours. There may be a church ceremony (a Catholic mass can be two hours long), a cocktail hour, dinner, speeches, dancing, late-night food and then more dancing. Then, the next day, there’s the poolside brunch (giant afterparty).

You need to survive all of it. I’d personally rather feel fantastic than spend an entire day wondering whether a strapless bra is slipping south. Likewise, I’d rather dance properly in a sturdy mid-heel (or flat!) than spend the evening perched on stilettos before inevitably changing into emergency flats. French women have mastered this calculation. Rather than packing trainers for later, they simply start with shoes they can actually wear.

2. French Women Treat Dress Codes More Casually Than You’d Think

Like many wedding cultures, there is one universally understood rule: don’t wear white. Beyond that, things become surprisingly murky. You may be surprised to learn that despite Parisian women’s well-documented devotion to black, it isn’t typically the colour of choice at French weddings. Given its association with mourning, this makes a certain amount of sense, I suppose. The rule that truly baffled me, however, concerned red. I only learned of it recently whilst wearing a bright red dress to a wedding.

A fellow guest informed me that red supposedly signals that you are the groom’s mistress. Yes, you read that correctly. This felt like useful information that perhaps could have been shared before the ceremony. Apparently, it’s an old superstition that still circulates in certain circles. Meanwhile, red remains a traditional bridal colour throughout much of India and Pakistan, associated with prosperity, joy and marriage itself. So yeah, personally, I’m not buying it. In fact, I wore another red dress to a Paris civil wedding last week.

3. Weddings Are the One Time French Women Fully Embrace Colour

Every French wedding gives me a slight The Wizard of Oz moment. The same women who spend most of the year dressed in navy, black, camel and cream suddenly emerge wearing fuchsia, emerald green, tomato red, saffron yellow and combinations that, on paper, have absolutely no business working together. And yet they do.

French wedding style is often less about matching and more about intentional contrast: pink with red, lilac with burgundy, bright florals against tailored outerwear. The result feels joyful rather than precious. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve arrived questioning a colour combination only to spend the rest of the day wondering why I don’t wear it myself. Personally, pink and red remain my favourite pairing.

4. Don't Try Too Hard

One thing I consistently notice at French weddings is that women rarely look as though they’re trying too hard. That doesn’t mean they dress conservatively, quite the opposite. But French wedding dressing tends to favour suggestions, like a beautifully cut back, an incredible fabric, a dramatic sleeve or a perfectly tailored silhouette. Another not-trying-too-hard facet I’ve noted over the years is that with all the weddings to keep up with, my Parisian friends are spending less on these outfits than you might think.

There is no shame whatsoever in a dress from the high street or a French mid-level brand, in fact, and a perfect vintage find is one’s crowning glory. That or an excellent rotation of "tradesies" with one’s similarly fashion-minded friends. "You wear the shoes, I will wear that dress, then we swap." So yes, it’s definitely not a spending competition. To the contrary, pulling it all off for less is to be admired, even envied.

5. Low-Key Beauty Rules at Every Age

If there is one consistent French wedding beauty rule, it’s this: nobody wants to look overdone. Over-60 French women particularly excel at this. I am always amazed by the level of embracing one’s flaws and highlighting one’s natural features. The women whose beauty routines I want to snatch most throughout the marathon are rarely the ones with the most elaborate updos or the most complicated makeup.

Plus, if you haven’t gone for hair and makeup that’s too elaborate, it’s much less likely to look like it’s come apart at the seams after hours of wild dancing. Instead, hair tends to look soft and touchable. Makeup enhances rather than transforms. The irony, of course, is that achieving this level of apparent effortlessness often requires considerable effort. But that’s a different story for a different day. Oh, and if you’re like me, don’t forget to wear waterproof mascara—I'm not jaded yet!

When Grace Gummer stepped onto The Devil Wears Prada 2 red carpet last month, she did so in an outfit that would have elicited approval (possibly in the form of a frosty once-over) from her mother’s on-screen alter ego, Miranda Priestly. The ensemble in question was a three-piece by Bottega Veneta: a woven leather shirt, trousers and square-toe pumps. And despite the shrugged-off left shoulder that revealed a triangle of skin, it was a look that could have easily translated to a 9-5 setting.

Hers isn’t the only celebrity wardrobe that’s less "promo" and more CEO. Meryl herself has been bossing the "pap walk" from car to studio—namely, a button-down shirt, high-waisted trousers and not one, not two, but three belts, all black and all by Celine. The result was simple yet effective; her triple-cinched waist adding a note of personality but not making too much of a statement (this is work, after all). Michaela Coel has similarly blazed a trail of executive (but make it edgy) looks as she promotes her various projects. As well as new-gen tweed jackets from Chanel paired with turn-up jeans for business-casual savvy, Michaela is backing the skirt suit, a workwear staple from way back when that deserves a second bite of the cherry, especially if it's Ferragamo.

Think of this as reworked workwear; office-coded looks that have nothing to do with polyester trousers, power dresses or sad beige pumps. Instead, they balance polish with personality, side-stepping the boxy or boring for the kind of looks that might almost make you glad your company’s policy has changed to four days in the office.

At fashion month, street-stylers adopted a very convincing "business casual" dress code, which today is a kind of hodgepodge at best and utterly confusing at worst after years of hybrid working. In Paris, fashion influencer Pernille Teisbaek based her look around a leather pencil skirt, tucking in a blue shirt layered under a zippered jumper, with a chunky belt and square-toe mules. With elongated cuffs that trumpeted over her wrists—not to mention her tattooed anklet that snaked down her left foot—it was something of a lightbulb moment if you’ve ever wondered how to do "you" but with slightly more smarts.

Caroline Issa, meanwhile, subverted the idea of tailoring in the same city, pairing a matching wool shirt and barrel-leg trousers with a jacket that was half navy blazer, half shell jacket (courtesy of Sacai).

Both would suit the office and freelance life, whether you’re zipping between coffees or setting up for the day in a co-working space. Rosie Lai, a fashion editor and contributor to Tatler Asia, has demanded a lot from her workwear since becoming self-employed. "My wardrobe has to work harder than before to take me seamlessly from one aspect of my life to another. This means clothes that would look appropriate enough for meetings but casual enough for dinner with friends afterwards, all without trying too hard."

Lai’s MO is simple. "A mix of clean tailoring with an element of ease, and bold gold jewellery to finish it all off. I love an oversized jacket, especially anything with an '80s shoulder." It’s often the finishing touches—a silhouette, a colour or a type of metal—that will become a kind of calling card."When I worked backstage producing fashion shows (a lifetime ago) and had to wear all-black, I'd still have giant gold earrings on. It’s what makes me feel like myself," she says.

Instead of dedicated workwear brands that cater to one area of a person’s wardrobe (like a lineup of trouser suits and silk shirts), we now have labels providing more versatile foundations. Dilly Groes, founder of contemporary womenswear label Groes, describes them as, "The pieces you reach for instinctively, week after week." Her own workwear has become increasingly streamlined over time. "I’ve moved towards more of a uniform, something consistent and easy that removes decision-making on busy mornings. It’s less about variety and more about refinement," she says.

She knows that her customer, far from giving up on the category, is seeking workwear from Groes. "It’s always a huge thing we consider in the design process, creating pieces that slot seamlessly into a woman’s existing wardrobe and work across different parts of her day," she says, name-checking The Margot Trousers (a mid to high-waisted trouser that’s pleasingly classic), The Florence Shirt (a relaxed button-down shirt), The Kate Blazer (the brand’s best-selling blazer) and The London Coat (an oversized, double-breasted coat). "They’re all designed to be worn on repeat, styled multiple ways and to elevate the simplest outfit."

This is what’s different about today’s workwear. It might be smart, but it’s still wearable, not the visual equivalent of bland corporate jargon, but something hard-working which telegraphs your personality. Once upon a time, not too long ago, Kylie Jenner walked outside with her hair in a ponytail and sent the internet into a frenzy. As such, beauty marketers across the world started a race to rebrand this fairly innocuous staple hairstyle into the new and (supposedly) improved "partless slick-back" trend. Surely the standard for a sleek ponytail should really be the hair at Balmain’s spring/summer 2016 show by Sam McKnight, which was high, smooth and finished with a piece of hair wrapped around the elastic hairband (to conceal the inner workings and add a layer of mystery).

As well as Balmain’s show models exemplifying the ultimate show pony, when considering great hair, I often find myself referencing a certain model dog, Samantha. This influencer Afghan hound is the ultra-elegant long-haired, long-nosed, pearlescent canine who sports effortless up-dos and silk scarves, and who proves that there's no need to reinvent the wheel when you can simply up the ante. So with that, get your hair ties at the ready, because it’s time to look back at some ponytails worth writing about!

Starting with the biggest for maximum impact, Guido Palau’s ponytails on the runway for Versace’s pre-fall 2019 show make pageant girls look like skinheads. Two models turned heads with XXL brunette ponytails adorned with gaudy crystals that fall into the "so wrong it’s right" category. The collection came the season after the 2018 tribute, where Donatella Versace unearthed the greatest hits from her brother Gianni's archive, and she was evidently still riding the wave for pre-fall 2019.

You cannot utter the word "ponytail", much less "big ponytail", without mentioning singer Ciara. Braided, brushed-out, curly, straight—you name it, she’s worn it (and well!). At the Met Gala in 2019 (the theme was Camp), Ciara sported a ponytail consisting of six Afro wigs worn high on the head, offset by a straight centre part at the front and two silver barrettes. The hair, created by Cesar DeLeon Ramirez, rose high above her head and fell all the way down her back.

Prepare yourself for this band-aid-ripping moment. My hottest ponytail take is that the Blond Ambition pony is not Madonna’s best. IMHO, her best is the voluminous curtain of blonde that sat atop her head whilst she wore the famous blue silk Tom Ford shirt to the 1995 VMAs. In fact, she donned an even better version of this pony in her iconic 1992 book Sex, shot by Steven Meisel in her peak Erotica era. The hair is even longer, and the look is finished with a single pair of hoop earrings. Both bouffant-like ponytails crafted by hairstylist Garren, could be descendants of fellow generational beauty, Sharon Tate, who secured her golden ponytail with a black velvet bow and punctuated it with a perfect flick at the end.

The plastic ring ponytail accessories from Dior spring/summer 2015 (also by the legendary Guido Palau) might be due for a comeback. The natural flow of the hair was interrupted, as if someone had sliced their pony off and then reattached it in a bout of regret. Colour played a huge part in how this style was read: the clear and silver rings felt like a sci-fi dream, whilst the reds, yellows and greens had a more '60s feel. The link between the '60s and futuristic interpretations of space is not lost here, and if you weren’t convinced, then the little beehive that accompanied the abstract ponytail serves as proof. Note: remember the red glossy boots that season? Also very '60s space-age!

Janet Jackson is another ponytail chameleon. She has worn every iteration of the style (it would be rude to her cheekbones not to!). A personal favourite Janet ponytail was her high, braided iteration at the 35th Grammy Awards by celebrity braider Janet Zeitoun. She let her hair and beauty take centre stage, her outfit a crisp white suit with a matching white wrap around her pony to pull the look together. It's a masterclass in red-carpet styling.

The high ponytail has a soulmate: the fringe. If the tight pull lifts the face, then the blunt fringe is the frame. Worn by icons like singer Nina Hagen, who is often cited as a source of inspiration by celebrity hairstylist Louis Souvestre, Nina’s hair was chameleonic in colour but always perfectly haphazard in style, and left a deep impression on Souvestre. Variations on the fringe-and-pony combo were also adopted by Janet Zeitoun for Janet Jackson in the What’s It Gonna Be?! music video, as well as Lady Gaga at the 2011 Grammys, where hairstylist Frederic Aspiras had her hair dishevelled and sat to the side, with her bottle blonde fading into the slightest tinge of coral-ish pink.

Souvestre also cites Josephine Baker’s high pony, which was sculpted by Jean Clément and protrudes from three artfully formed rings of hair that descend in size, as another iconic ponytail. The same image inspired Megan Thee Stallion’s hair by Kellon Deryck at the 2025 Met Gala, proving that this avant-garde style has stayed on fashion's shared mood board since its debut in 1951 at the Havana Club, and is where hair styling can transcend to artistic heights, beyond runways.

For the romantics, Zoë Kravitz's braided ponytail by Nikki Nelms for this year’s Met Gala was also nothing short of artful. Even her day to day look is shrouded in mystery and sparked much debate online as to what exactly Zoë asked for when making her request. Boho braids? A perfect mix of braids and locs? My personal favourite conspiracy was the simple suggestion of actually keeping your braids in longer than three weeks (if you know, you know). For the Met Gala Nelms added extra je ne sais quoi with tendrils of perfectly placed baby hair and a long ponytail that appeared to start its life as a messy bun before cascading down Zoë's back. When I think of princess hair, this is the image that comes to mind.

If this list so far has felt intimidating, rest assured that even "basic" can make history when it’s done right. Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved with a side fringe and a headful of layers, which produced spiky little ponytails that took the teens of Laguna Beach (and the world) by storm. Think PVC jelly shoes, furry exteriors, thick wooden clogs and anything else weird and wonderful sparking hot debate online. They might be a little silly, they may repel men (if not, what’s the point?), but that’s fashion, darling!
This month Rebecca decodes the obscure footwear trends presented at men's Paris Fashion Week for spring/summer 2027. From Saint Laurent's viral transparent pointed plastic dress shoes to Nike's new hybrid sneakers, there's a lot to unpack. So let's get into it...

Paris Fashion Week men's has just wrapped up, and the biggest takeaway, the talking point everyone is covering, is the footwear presented. From Saint Laurent's clear dress shoes to Setchu's high heeled Geta clogs, as well as Jaden Smith's sophomore collection at Christian Louboutin, menswear has finally caught the memo that freaky footwear is on the fashion agenda, and I for one, love to see it.

Starting with the most major of all: Anthony Vaccarello's Saint Laurent show. Here are four words I never thought I'd write together: pointed clear polyurethane brogues. Coming in a few hues, from deep glossy burgundy to olive green and a smokey black, some with snakeskin details, all had the same ultra pointed, elongated toe that we've seen in the women's collections for a few seasons, which many critics and commentators have likened to the Medieval poulaine styles worn in the 14th and 15th century. As well as the lace-ups was a slightly more traditional iteration in Chelsea boot form (because Vaccarello likes to cater to everyone, obvs!). The most subversive detail of this footwear collection was not so much a feature of the shoes, but each model's foot—in that they were all laid bare, below the the PVC upper. And without socks! Just five free range piggies squished inside each shoe in 35+ degree heat.

This collection debut comes just a month or so after Chanel's viral soleless sandals that basically announced the naked shoe as the new naked dress. Is this Saint Laurent's more wearable answer to this trend? Is this menswear finally catching on? Either way, the dogs are barking, but so am I.

The fabulously freaky, wonderfully weird shoes didn't stop at Saint Laurent transparent lace-ups. Christian Louboutin—designed by Jaden Smith—showcased a red 'shoe' (if you can call it that), that more evoked a monster's paw than it did a traditional sneaker, boot or slip-on. Smith also took the dress shoe to new heights, or rather lengths, introducing an Oxford lace-up with a long front, harsh square toe and toe-like mouldings on the top.

Nike too presented several new models for the coming spring season, embracing more hybrids that made 'sneakerinas' and 'snoafers' look relatively old hat. The Air Force 1 has received a makeover that has a square toe, a plaid print and a version in tan suede with turquoise embellishment that might persuade John Wayne to hang up his cowboy boots.

Finally, special mention must be made to Setchu, who dressed male models in its traditional Japanese Geta clogs, but instead of their usual heightened but flat sole, had a 'high heel' shape. Men in heels—yes please!

As a beauty editor, I've tried several aesthetic treatments and facials over my decade of working in the industry. From Botox to lymphatic drainage, I'm a moth to a flame for any treatments that promise to lift and sculpt. So, when I came out of my last treatment review and immediately texted my group chat to explain how it had just transformed my whole face in just half an hour, you might assume that I'd just left an aesthetics clinic. However, it was, in fact, after a brow mapping treatment with one of London's most sought-after brow artists, Hollie Parkes. Scroll on for what you need to know about brow mapping and how it single-handedly transformed my eyebrows.

What Is Brow Mapping?

Brow mapping is an expert technique used by brow artists to find the best shape for your eyebrows. Drawing upon the principles of the golden ratio, it helps to determine where your brows should start and finish, as well as the placement of your arch, to best suit your facial features.

It's a kind of brow architecture that is an exact science and requires a good eye; however, Parkes tells me that no two appointments are the same, and she'll tailor the brows differently from client to client. "I'm taking into consideration the person's natural hair growth and their features, but I take the rules with a pinch of salt whilst designing something that's going to really suit that person's face," she says.

My Brow Mapping Experience

Upon walking into Parkes' treatment room, she carefully assessed my eyebrows and asked if I had a favourite brow. She tells me that most people often do, and so brow mapping helps to achieve symmetry on both sides. I've always preferred the shape of my right eyebrow, and I overplucked my left one as a teenager (and it also grows in a different way from my right side), so I've struggled to get a balance between the two of them, even with the best brow pencils and eyebrow gels, and even trying brow lamination in the past, too.

The treatment began with Parkes cleansing the area before carefully mapping out my eyebrows whilst I lay down. Using a ruler, she meticulously measured and made markings from the front through to the tail of the brows. I then sat upright, and she assessed them again to ensure symmetry. From there, it became clear exactly where I needed to fill in my brows (no surprise, it was the gap on my left arch where I'd over-plucked).

From there, she threaded any brow hairs outside of the markings and then carefully trimmed my brow hairs with meticulous precision. Lastly, she filled in any sparse areas with a micro-fine brow pencil and set my brows in place with a brow gel. Being shown exactly how to fill your brows in was enlightening in itself, and I felt better informed about exactly where I needed to place my brow pencil strokes at home. As Parkes tells me during our appointment, it's worthwhile having an expert pair of eyes on your eyebrows if you're struggling with any asymmetry. It's also a great starting place if you're going on a brow-shaping journey, or wanting to explore treatments such as microblading to create your ideal brow shape.

Before and After

And when Parkes handed me the mirror, my jaw dropped. I had never seen my eyebrows look more symmetrical, and I couldn't believe that my brows could look this good. Not only that, but having my brow mapping and styling by Parkes had totally opened up my eyes, and gave me a refreshed and sculpted appearance I've never been able to achieve from tweezing at home. It's said that brows should be sisters, not twins, and looking back on photos, my brows didn't even know one another prior to my treatment. But since my brow mapping experience, they've never looked better, and the compliments on my eyebrows have been rolling in ever since.
