What I Learnt as an Australian at New York Fashion Week

September's an amazing time of year to be in New York. Aside from the perfect weather, it’s New York Fashion Week—the kick off for the spring runway circuit, and not only is it a great opportunity to immerse myself in all things fashion, it’s an opportunity to spend some quality time with industry friends. It's part of my job to make things ‘look glamorous’, but the reality of fashion week is a lot of hard work, and often (literally) running around town all day. But at the end of the day, I'm always to grateful to get to experience some amazing shows, and meet some very talented people.

New York isn't afraid to experiment, and it's something that makes every season feel fresh, exciting and new. From a silent runway at Marc Jacobs, to Ralph Lauren showing in his garage (complete with a stunning luxury car collection), to The Row's intimate restaurant setting—the designers kept us guessing in the best possible way. It was also so refreshing to see such diversity on the runways across the board.

I’m back home now, and I’ve taken a moment to reflect on the epic week that was—here’s what I learnt—keep scrolling.

1. Colour Is Our Friend

If the runways taught me anything, it's that colour is back in a big for S/S 18. While warm weather is imminent for us in the Southern Hemisphere, I'll be taking note from the Tibi and Michael Kors shows, and incorporating some pastel hues into my wardrobe ASAP. In the meantime, I was loving a pop of red to break up my usual monochrome wardrobe.

2. New York City Loves Australia

From Vegemite toast at Ruby's, to seeing two of my favourite Australian labels, Zimmermann and Dion Lee deliver incredible shows, it's clear that Australia has a special place in New York's heart. There are so many great Australian stores and cafes in the city—and a little piece of home can make the long days easier to get through.

3. Caffeine Is a Necessity

And finding the best place to grab an iced latte was my mission of the week! My favourites for a fashion week caffeine fix are Intelligentsia at The High Line Hotel, Happy Bones, Two Hands, La Colombe and Ruby's. Thank me later...
