We’ve already seen how Olivia Palermo, Banana Republic’s Global Style Ambassador, flawlessly styled her looks in their new campaign with NYC in mind. But this versatile spring collection is clearly ready to take us from coast to coast, and we bet there’s a must-have to be found no matter where you live or #WhatMovesYou. To prove our theory, we’re launching a new series, Style by City, where three fashion influencers from around the country share the perfect weekend essentials for their hometown. Our third visit is to Nashville, where Mary Seng of Happily Grey is leading the local style set.

Mary Seng’s Instagram account seamlessly jumps from Nashville to Madrid to New York and back again, introducing a side of Tennessee that’s far more chic than you’ve been giving the state credit for. Having now spent five years in her adopted hometown, the Happily Grey blogger laughs as she tells us cowboy boots are strictly reserved for tourists: “There are definitely Southern roots that influence the style. However, it’s a little more edgy and sophisticated than your typical Southern city.”
Listening to Seng describe Steadfast, her go-to Nashville coffee spot, you could easily imagine she’s offering up an insider’s guide to Williamsburg. “Everything is roasted in-house,” she says, emphasizing the cool, minimalistic aesthetic of the notoriously chic industrial space. Cool and minimalistic is equally descriptive of the Banana Republic pieces Seng describes as key for a stylish weekend in the city. “Locals don’t mind spending a little more on a basic white tee or clean knit, because this is what they will likely wear day to night,” Seng tells us, confirming the local sartorial philosophy is right in line with that of fashion capitals the world over.
Ahead, Seng shares her must-hit spots when visiting Nashville—and the wardrobe essentials you’ll need to re-create her effortless looks!

Seng tells us we can’t visit Nashville without spending some time at Radnor Lake State Park, where she likes to hike at sunrise at least twice a week. “It literally looks like a watercolor painting as you walk along the trail,” she shares. What should you pack for the occasion? “Sneakers and a light outer layer. I’m loving Banana’s gray trench. It’s the perfect layer for a day in Nashville; it will go with nearly anything.”
Seng’s advice when it comes to packing for a weekend in Nashville? “Don’t overthink it! Stick to strong basics that can be transitioned from day to night,” she says. At the top of her list is this light ribbed knit cashmere sweater, perfect tucked into denim for instant ’90s cool or expertly layered with a basic tee for a strategic slice of fresh white.
Seng’s excited to have moved into a new home in the 12 South area, which she describes as the perfect place to spend a lazy afternoon wandering around with a fresh juice or a cup of coffee. “Nashville has influenced my style to be more approachable and laid-back,” the blogger says. “For a daytime run to the coffee shop, you’ll find me in high-top sneakers and skinny denim—almost always black or gray.”
Come evening, Seng recommends grabbing a cocktail on the rooftop at Nashville’s new hotel, The Thompson. After drinks, head to Rolf & Daughters, a cozy, industrial-chic space that serves up “really clever variations on standard American dishes.” When she doesn’t have time to swing home first, Seng loves that her It bag for the season works as a crossbody, a tote, and a clutch, making it her quick, easy trick for upgrading practical daytime outfits to an evening-ready look.
