An Australian Jewellery Designer Shares Her NYFW Photo Diary

As an Australian designer, travelling to NYFW to show the world your designs is kind of a big deal. Which is why we asked Sarah Gittoes, creative director at Sarah & Sebastian to chronicle every moment of her time in New York, so we could live vicariously through her incredible talents.

Sarah & Sebastian collaborated with Dion Lee for his A/W 16 collection to create neck and lip pieces (the latter being our new obsession). For a jewellery label that only launched in 2011, Sarah & Sebastian has changed the game in Australia. The label’s fine and minimalist designs filled a gap we didn’t even realise existed (for this editor included, I don’t know where I’d be now without my Warp Ring).

"My first day in NYC was spent with Dion Lee for his fittings in W20th Street Chelsea. The show was three days away!"

"This is Dion and I adjusting a piece on the model. The neckpieces are made from sterling silver, brass and silicone. The design explores the concept of negative space."

"Second day of fittings—the model had a great energy."

"In between castings, I visited the Whitney Museum of American Art. For me, art is a constant source of inspiration. I loved this gelatin silver print by Eileen Quinlan, it reminds me of the references I looked to when designing our OIL collection."

"It’s Saturday the 13th and the models are backstage at Milk Studios. This is a detail photograph of the lip pieces we designed to complement Dion’s concept of ‘piercing’. It’s constructed from sterling silver and gives the illusion of a disc piercing the lower lip."

"A detail shot of my hotel room. I stayed in the Meatpacking District, conveniently close to the galleries in Chelsea and the Chelsea Market."

"On one of the days it snowed, I decided to keep warm and visit the Guggenheim Museum. There was a wonderfully witty exhibition featuring Peter Fischli and David Weiss."

"I’m currently fascinated by adorning lips with jewellery. This image is a still from a video installation by Aida Ruilova, at the Marlborough Gallery, Chelsea."

"My last stop before Sydney is to the PACE Gallery in Chelsea. I loved this space and the way in which the Hiroshi Sugimoto exhibition was displayed."
