Tunics Over Pants

While last season's structured pieces defined our wardrobes, this spring favors trends that are a touch more relaxed. Noteworthy labels like Alberta Ferretti and Christian Dior catered to this look in their S/S 13 collections with airy, fluid tunics layered over trousers (or, in the latter's case, a sleek pair of shorts). But this style presents a couple challenges: not only do the oversized silhouettes threaten to swallow your shape, tunics bring to mind holiday jaunts to Marrakesh, rather than a viable option for the office or night out. Thankfully, inspired by several ethereal runway ensembles, we've styled a tunic top in a way that's both wearable and universally flattering, so continue reading for more details. On The Runway
There's a multitude of ways to wear the tunic, but the fundamentals of this look are simple and unfussy. The Row and Alberta Ferretti showcased the style using a streamlined, monochrome palette; while the former teams a delicate halter-style top with sheer, wide-leg pants, the latter's diaphanous Top ($995, 310.652.9000) is contrasted with tailored, cropped Pants ($885, 310.652.9000) and pointy-toe Shoes ($620, 310.652.9000).

Monochrome is not the only way to go, however. Mara Hoffman's Applique Shirt Dress ($275) in Navy features a busy, intriguing pattern that's balanced by crisp Slouch Pants ($242) in Vanilla. On the other hand, at Christian Dior, Creative Director Raf Simons paired black Shorts ($680, 800.929.DIOR) and Pumps ($760, 800.929.DIOR) as the perfect foil to the voluminous fabric of a color-blocked Dress ($5000, 800.929.DIOR).

Our Look
The look is unquestionably breezy and summery, but we've adapted it so that it's suitable for a creative work environment, or when paired with the right accents, a night out. Start with a tunic in a versatile hue, like BCBGMaxazria's Cyprien Asymmetrical Top ($168). In order to contrast the top's billowing proportions and accentuate your waistline, making it flattering for all figures, pair the tunic with Theory's fitted Viviette Cotton Blend Blazer ($395) for shape and structure.

Smarten up the ensemble with pieces that don't distract from the flowing silhouette, like Gryphon's slim, cropped Xander Pants ($450, similar styles available here) and Mia's Bennett Heels ($69) in Black Snake. Finally, if you're dressing for a night on the town, add a hint of glamour with Stella & Dot's Petra Fringe Earrings ($59), and you're set to go!--Tiffany
