Last week after sharing the exciting announcement of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Ugg’s new partnership, we did a quick jaunt to the English countryside to interview the supermodel about her new role as brand ambassador. We were also super curious to find out how the stylish supermodel will be wearing her Uggs, as well as why she thinks the brand has revived its popularity in recent months. Scroll down to read what she had to say!
WHO WHAT WEAR: How did the partnership come about?
ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELY: "I've been a FAN of Ugg for a long time. I got my first pair of Ugg boots with one of my first-ever paychecks. I had saved up for it when I started modeling, and I think every girl can kind of relate to that moment when you’ve saved up for something you’re really excited about and you get the box and you open it. I remember that feeling really, really well, and I’ve owned a pair of Uggs ever since then. So when I sat with Alice [the global director of PR] and we talked about everything, It felt like a true authentic partnership for me to come onboard with Ugg and I'm really excited about it. Ugg plays a big, big part of my life in terms of my personal life and my off-duty life. Like I said, I’ve been a fan of them for a long time. They've been part of my staple wardrobe for 13 years."
WWW: Do you remember what you wore with your first pair of Uggs?
RHW: "Interestingly, I think people always ask if my style has changed and I don’t really think it's changed. I mean I can probably afford different types of clothes than when I was 16, and I probably have a better idea of what suits me, but inherently I’m a jeans and T-shirt girl. I love well-tailored blazers and cool pieces like that, and I love silk blouses, but on my days off I'm very much about classic gorgeous pieces of cashmere or sweaters. I'm a big fan of Paige denim, I live in leather trousers in the evening, and I feel like Uggs can kind of work off all those things I wear, and equally the outfit can be paired with a pair of heels at the same time. I don’t think there are any rules with it really. I think of Ugg as a brand that has managed to marry luxury and fashion and comfort all in one."
WWW: In terms of being more casual, do you feel like California style complements your upbringing in the English countryside?
RHW: "It's really interesting because I actually feel more at home living in Los Angeles than I have from living in New York or London. And I love New York and London, and I'm so glad I get to spend so much time in cities like that, but growing up in the countryside I feel like living in Los Angeles I get that touch of city life but at the same time I'm able to be in touch with nature. Being able to spend weekends in nature, and I spend a lot of time in Malibu…Malibu is so casual, and I feel like such cool style is going on there with the surfers.”
WWW: Your airport style is really inspiring, how would you wear a pair of Uggs to travel in?
RHW: "I'm obsessed with these slim-cut boots because they're a little more feminine and a little more… I guess the right word would be 'smart.' You can wear them with a black leather pant or skinny jeans, they don’t look as casual as the classic pair, and I love the little wedge on it so it gives you a little bit of height. So I'd wear these with black skinny jeans from Paige or a pair of black leather pants, and I'd wear a silk shirt or a great T-shirt from James Perse and a well-cut blazer. I know Paige does fantastic blazers, and I'm also a big Saint Laurent blazer fan, so that's how I’d rock them at the airport."
WWW: Other fashionable women like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner have been spotted in Uggs recently, what do you think draws stylish celebrities (and non-celebrities) toward the brand?
RHW: "I think Ugg is the ultimate lifestyle brand. When you go onto the website or you go into the store, you can see that Ugg is so much more than the classic boot; there's a style for everybody. There's something to fit all kinds of lifestyles and all kinds of occasions in your life. That's one of the things that is bringing Ugg back, and they’re doing a great job of introducing new styles. Like I said, the slim cut is really going to be huge for the brand—it already is huge for the brand—so people are going to love this new style. It's a little more feminine and less casual. Ugg has such a long history, it’s 20 years old the brand—I think that also style right now is about being laid-back and cool and comfortable and chic at the same time, and I do really think that's what Ugg brings to the table."
WWW: What’s your go-to spring look with a pair of Uggs?
RHW: "[I'll be wearing] the Rella boots and Kari slides… For spring one of my favorite combinations is a pair of denim cutoffs and a knit. I love the idea of having leg on show and being bundled up on top. I think that looks really cute and cool. There's something really laid-back and California style like that for me. That’s how I'll be wearing mine in the spring."
