So This Is How Poppy Delevingne and More Got Engaged

In the constantly fluctuating world of celebrity romance, proposals seem about a dime a dozen—even when, sadly, the actual marriages don't end up lasting. But there are some proposal stories that rise above the others as being particularly sweet and dreamy, and we think they deserve to be acknowledged.

From George Clooney's unforgettably long proposal to Amal Alamuddin (he was on his knee for 28 minutes!) to Taylor Kinney's Valentine's Day proposal to Lady Gaga, these stories will likely melt even the hardest of hearts. Keep scrolling for our favorites.

One of our favorite proposals comes from one of the world's most stylish couples, Amal and George Clooney. He put on some of his aunt Rosemary Clooney's songs, went down on one knee, and just popped the question out of nowhere—and Amal left him on his knee for a solid 28 minutes while she decided how to answer.

"Se just kept saying 'oh my god' and 'wow,' and we just sat there," he said. "And finally, I just said, 'Listen, I'm 53. … I've been on my knee for about 28 minutes, so I gotta get an answer out of this because I'm gonna throw a hip out!"

James Cook is a man who really knows his now wife. To propose to style star Poppy Delevingne, he enlisted bag designer Anya Hindmarch to custom-create a red leather jewelry box that had the words "Will you marry me?" inscribed inside.

In the realm of grand proposals, no one can quite beat Kanye West. When he wanted to propose to Kim Kardashian, he rented out the entirety of San Francisco's AT&T baseball park, hired the Chicago symphony to play, and put his request for her hand in marriage in lights on the stadium's Jumbotron. Subtle, right?

For the three weeks leading up his proposal to Kate Middleton on an African vacation, Prince William was very nervous he would lose his mother Diana's priceless sapphire engagement ring. While they were on the vacation, he stored the ring in a backpack that he kept in his sight at all times, until he was finally ready to pop the question one day when the two were relaxing at a lodge.

Kyle Newman, a film director, relied on a perfectly picturesque setting to deliver a memorable proposal. He popped the question to King while they were on a spontaneous stroll through Beverly Hills Park.

Kinney proposed to the pop star in the most traditionally romantic way possible: on Valentine's Day. He had the diamond ring he gave her inscribed with "T hearts S," a reference to Lady Gaga's real first name, Stephanie.

The Magic Mike star recently opened up about the sweet way he proposed to his fiancée.

"You only get one chance to do it, and if you’re gonna do it, you gotta do it right, so there’s a lot of planning that goes into it," Manganiello told Live! With Kelly and MichaelI proposed in Spanish. I had a big speech in Spanish [Vergara's native language], and that’s what I was nervous about. The last thing you want to do is mess up the Spanish on a proposal to a Colombian woman."

The Oscar- and Emmy-winning actor proposed in perhaps the sweetest way possible: in front of his whole family at Christmas. He buried the engagement ring he bought for Alves deep inside eight boxes within boxes so she would really have to dig to find it.
