Yes, Rihanna Wore a Centuries-Old Trend on the Red Carpet

Rihanna is currently on a bit of a streak when it comes to amazing red carpet looks and, yes, you can blame it on her new movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. As one of the stars, the singer/designer/actress has been in the spotlight consistently for the last couple weeks, each appearance outdoing the last. And today, her Giambattista Valli dress left yet another major impression.

Rihanna arrived at the London premiere in a scarlet dress that featured a low-cut, off-the-shoulder silhouette on top and extended out into a massive skirt. While the style star might be adventurous in her ability to test-drive every new trend currently in the zeitgeist, in this case, her ensemble gave us 19th-century vibes with its hoop skirt–like shape that billowed away from her body in an exaggerated way.

While the dress doesn't seem to have the steel structure of a traditional Victorian-era design—and thank goodness for that—Rihanna certainly pulled off an old-meets-new fashion look in her signature steal-the-red-carpet-spotlight way.
