5 Cool Outfits Even Busy Mums Can Manage

In her first column for Who What Wear Australia, PR director and consultant Kelly Muller shares with us her best outfit ideas for busy mums. Originally hailing from a small town in New Zealand, Muller has now lived beachside in Bondi for five years. Currently the director of her own agency, Kelly Muller Consulting, this sea and sunshine aficionado is also mum to Sunny Marlow.

Like most women, you’ve probably experienced many  ‘I don’t know what to wear’ moments. You know what I’m talking about, those dreaded days where no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to pull it together. I found that once I had my first child, I experienced those moments more often, and it wasn’t until I started working again that I began to get my mojo back.

I would describe my personal style as pretty minimal. I’m a sucker for anything black or denim and feel most comfortable in a T-shirt and jeans. However my trusty go-to (crew neck tee, high waisted jeans and heels) wasn’t as realistic for my everyday once I had a little one to consider.

Sunny was born in the summer, so my rotating wardrobe consisted of button down shirts, oversized singlets, cut off shorts and slides. When I first started working again, I was at a total loss. Pinterest became my best friend, and thankfully, some of my incredibly stylish clients helped me to find my groove again simply by reminding me just to be me.

Here, I bring to you my five go to outfits for multi-tasking mamas whether you’re at work or at play.

Elevate shorts and a tee

As my days often include the office and the playground, it’s important that I’m comfortable but essential that my outfit is appropriate for both situations. To make denim shorts office-worthy, I simply swap out a plain tee for a more detailed or interesting top or a button down shirt. Then, when teamed with ankle boots or slides, it’s less beach, more chic.

Throw on and go

At least once a week, I’m in a dress. It’s a no-fuss option when you literally don’t know what to wear. I’ve been living in Silk Laundry Slip Dresses, which are perfect for mums or anyone else who has a busy lifestyle. In between cuddling, feeding, dressing and organising my 18 month old, there’s not a lot of time left for me in the mornings, so the bias cut silk dresses are quick, easy and super comfortable throughout the day.

Low-fuss, minimal effort

Cute, comfortable and wearable, a jumpsuit is a no-brainer. Like a dress, jumpsuits can be worn with a variety of footwear—my fave is with a pair of crisp white trainers. Sleeveless and longer length works trans-seasonally and I’m all about lightweight linen that can be layered up as the weather starts to get cooler.

Stick to what you know

You can’t go wrong with a pair of mom jeans and a tee. It’s a timeless, stylish, get-up-and-go kind of look that works in almost every situation. Dress it up or down with accessories and shoes—but know you never have to question whether it’s working because the answer is ‘it always does’.

Off-duty activewear

Cliché I know, but every multi-tasking mama needs great activewear in their wardrobes! Kid-friendly, comfortable and while currently trending, it’s here for the long haul. Despite actually training twice a week, I have ‘athleisure’ pieces that work their way into my day-to-day wardrobe at least half the week.
