Sad news from the fashion world today: Legendary American designer Oscar de la Renta has passed away at the age of 82. His death has been confirmed by his wife Annette de la Renta.
The designer passed away after a long, on-and-off battle with cancer that began in 2006. His final public appearance was in September, during the runway show for his S/S 2015 womenswear collection in New York, the collection that sadly turned out to be his last.
According to The New York Times, the designer had been in increasingly deteriorating health over the past few months. At a 92Y talk with New York Fashion Week Director Fern Mallis in 2013, de la Renta addressed his 2006 cancer diagnosis.
"Yes, I had cancer. Right now, I am totally clean. The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die. We always think we are going to live forever," de la Renta said. "The dying aspect we will never accept. The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life."
The legendary designer dressed everyone from Nancy Reagan to Oprah Winfrey to Sarah Jessica Parker, and his iconic, ultra-feminine designs will be greatly missed.
