When you want to nail that big presentation or kill it in your monthly staff meeting, chances are you reach for a sophisticated and chic outfit, rather than something more casual and sloppy. Right? Well, that's working for you, as Glamour pointed out from a recent study. "Putting on formal clothes makes us feel powerful, and that changes the basic way we see the world," says Abraham Rutchick, professor of psychology at California State University at Northridge and one of the authors of The Cognitive Consequences of Formal Clothing.
As Glamour further researched from The Atlantic, "Rutchick and his coauthors found that wearing clothing that's more formal than usual makes people think more broadly and holistically, rather than narrowly and about fine-grained details." Essentially, that dominate-the-world outfit (think: the "power suit") you put on when you want to show who's boss really does have an affect on your performance and emotions.
What do you think of this study? Do you agree that a formal outfit like a suit can make you feel more in charge at work? We want to know. Let us know in the comment section below. And if you're in the market to purchase a new suit, shop some of our favorite styles right here.
