So Nike is having a moment. Last month, the brand launched its collaboration with A.L.C. on a collection of the It-girl favorite Cortez sneakers, which only solidified our love for Nike. It's safe to say that whenever the brand releases a new take on any of its classic sneaker styles, we're here for it, but Nike isn't just looking to impress the fashion set. The brand has laid down some serious goals to increase its impact on customers while minimizing its environmental impact, a goal that has proven to be difficult for many brands.
Nike announced its latest endeavor: Flyleather, a high-tech "super material" made from recycled scraps of leather that will help Nike make major strides toward its sustainability goals. "We've just had our minds blown about what we can do with this and the impact it can have," Hannah Jones, Nike chief sustainability officer and VP of innovation, said to Business of Fashion. "How often do you manage to get sustainable, performance and aesthetic in one go?" Jones continues. "If you were running a portfolio of startups, this would be your unicorn."
Prep your wallets: Flyleather will be used to remake a limited-edition series of the brand's best-selling sneaker styles like Air Force 1, Air Max 90, Cortez, and Jordan 1.
