We're really happy to see the fashion industry embracing more than one definition of beauty these days, this time in the form of Rebekah Marine, a 28-year-old model with a bionic arm who will walk in New York Fashion Week in September.
Marine had always wanted to be a model, Mashable reports, but having been born without a right forearm, she was told this was impossible. But four years ago, after being fitted for a prosthetic arm, she decided to ignore these comments, seeking instead to become a role model and inspiration for others. As she told Mashable, “It's so important to include more diverse models, because after all, nearly one in five people in America have a disability." She added, “We should be celebrating uniqueness, not conforming to what the media thinks is beautiful.”
While it hasn't been an easy road—Marine said there are some agencies who won't even look at her—she has made great strides in her career, having also walked in New York Fashion Week this past February and modeling in Nordstrom's 2015 anniversary catalog. In addition to this modeling work, Marine also works with the Lucky Fin Project, an organization dedicated to celebrating children with limb differences. We're stoked to see this gorgeous, inspiring model on the runway this month!
