It's Only February, and 2017 Already Has Its Breakout Model

Halima Aden made her beauty pageant–to–fashion week runway hop just a couple of weeks ago when she appeared in Yeezy Season 5. But if Milan Fashion Week is any indication, she’s sticking around for the rest of fashion month—and, ideally, a successful career to follow. Today in the Italian fashion capital, her latest landmark moment was at the Max Mara F/W 17 show.

Among a cast of major vets (Natasha Poly, Lily Donaldson, Isabeli Fontana) and newer superstars (Gigi Hadid), Aden wore one of the Italian luxury label’s most iconic pieces, a cashmere camel coat. Sporting brown trousers, white pointed-toe heels, and a hijab in observance of her Islamic faith, the Somali-American and 19-year-old model’s outfit was in line with the label’s newest designs that felt powerful and feminine.

Of course to claim that 2017 has already met its breakout fashion star in Aden might be a bit of a bold statement. But with the support of designers both domestic and abroad (Aden walked in the Alberta Ferretti show in Milan, as well) and her having found a personal champion in Carine Roitfeld, we’re almost certain this month is just the start of much more to come.
