Given the acute popularity of leggings this year, you'd probably guess that every activewear retailer has been selling more leggings than any other product category. Alas, that's not the case for activewear veteran Lululemon. The brand just released its sales report for the third quarter of the year and the results were indeed a little unexpected. Instead of leggings, the item that it sold the most of was actually sports bras, as reported by Fashionista.
Sports bra sales grew by a hefty margin of more than 20%, with tops and tanks increasing in sales as well. As a result, the company's CEO, Laurent Potdevin, teased "fantastic innovation" to come in the sports bra arena in 2017.
So why the shift in interest from leggings to sports bras at Lululemon? Perhaps it can be attributed to the oversaturated legging market, or the fact that women realized after building up their legging collection that they actually needed something to wear with them. Either way, we've always been big fans of the brand's collection of functional yet stylish sports bras (they always have the coolest backs), and we look forward to seeing what's to come for the reigning most popular category.
