Designer Joseph Altuzarra is arguably the wunderkind of the contemporary fashion scene. A relative newcomer among a sea of well-established names, the young designer has already established his namesake brand as a heavy hitter, and he reaffirmed this point during the F/W 15 season, when he sent his debut line of handbags down the runway at NYFW.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Altuzarra at a recent event at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills celebrating the arrival of his bags, and we had to hear it from him: What does he think is the number one thing every woman should look for when she’s on the hunt for a new bag?
“I think that what’s really interesting about bags is that women are very pragmatic about them,” Altuzarra told us. “While there is also an emotional reaction to a bag, if it doesn’t actually serve a purpose or if it doesn’t actually work for her life, she won’t use it. It has to be function and form together.”
He added that he thinks a woman’s approach to carrying her bag can say a lot about how she feels about the accessory.
“How women carry a bag can say a lot about who the woman is,” Altuzarra said. “Not just what it looks like, but whether you’re carrying it on your shoulder, across your body, in the crook of your arm, or holding it. It’s important how the bag moves with you.”
